Do not trust the capacity shown by your computer or the appearance of the enclosure by itself. Before storing valuable data, record the drive’s make, model and serial number; compare them with the manufacturer’s records; inspect the packaging and labels; confirm that the software-reported identity matches the hardware; and, when appropriate, perform a documented write/read capacity test for the actual storage technology. Treat every result as evidence, not conclusive proof. If identity, warranty, labeling or capacity results conflict, keep the drive unused and ask the manufacturer or seller to resolve it.
Why a reported multi-terabyte capacity can be false
An operating system normally trusts the storage controller to report its addressable capacity. A dishonest controller or enclosure can therefore announce a large number while containing a much smaller device. The computer may format that announced space successfully, yet data written beyond the real media can fail, disappear or overwrite earlier files.

Dynabook documented a purported 2 TB external drive that contained a 3 GB thumb drive when the enclosure was dismantled. That example does not establish how common the practice is, but it demonstrates why a convincing shell and a large number in Disk Management are not authentication.

The same symptoms can have different causes. A drive may be counterfeit, misrepresented, defective, degraded, or genuine but sold through an OEM channel with different warranty rules. A capacity test can reveal unreliable media without proving who made it or whether a seller intentionally misrepresented it. Provenance requires identity checks and, when necessary, manufacturer review.

What to do before plugging in or opening the drive
Preserve evidence before you change the product. A return window or payment dispute is easier when the original condition is documented.
- Photograph the unopened package, every label, seals, bar codes, the seller’s listing and your invoice. Include the serial number in a legible close-up.
- Save the listing page or a PDF of it, including the advertised capacity, model, interface and seller name. Record the purchase date and the channel through which it was sold.
- Do not remove labels, install a new enclosure, repartition the disk or run a write test if you may return it under a seller’s terms. Those actions can complicate a claim.
- If the drive already contains files, make a separate backup before any diagnostic that writes to the device. Never use a destructive test on the only copy of data.
An unopened external product deserves a different workflow from a bare internal SATA disk. The shell does not tell you whether the storage inside is a conventional hard disk, solid-state flash or a tiny device hidden behind a USB bridge.
First identify what you actually bought
Internal SATA hard drive
A bare internal drive normally exposes a manufacturer’s label, a model and serial number, and SATA power and data connectors. Its identity can usually be read from the label and from the computer’s storage-information tools after installation. Do not assume that a drive sold as “new” has direct retail warranty coverage; OEM units can be genuine while being supported by the computer maker or distributor instead.

External hard-drive enclosure
An external product may contain a SATA disk behind a USB-to-SATA bridge, or it may contain flash storage. The enclosure’s printed capacity and USB identity can be generated by the bridge electronics. If the internal mechanism matters to your decision, ask the manufacturer whether opening the case is permitted and whether the warranty would be voided. A teardown is not a first-line authenticity check.
Flash media presented as a disk
USB flash drives and memory cards can use firmware that reports more space than their memory contains. Tools designed for flash-media verification may therefore be relevant to that device type, but their procedures and compatibility should not be generalized to every magnetic hard disk or USB enclosure.

Check the model and serial number with the manufacturer
Read identifiers from both the label and the computer
Write down the exact model string, capacity designation, serial number, firmware revision and interface shown on the physical label. Then connect the drive and record the model, serial and firmware reported by the operating system or the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility. Compare character by character. A swapped digit, impossible model suffix or different serial is a material discrepancy.
For Seagate products, the company’s support guidance explains where to find identifiers on the label or in system information and describes the serial as “a unique identifier that allows us to look up information about your product and its warranty.” Use the official support or warranty page for the exact product family rather than a marketplace listing or a search-result snippet.

Look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s product documentation. Check whether the stated capacity, interface, cache or form factor existed for that model and whether the label’s naming convention matches the manufacturer’s naming convention. A seller may combine a real model number with an impossible capacity or a suffix used for another region or channel.
Understand what a lookup can and cannot prove
A successful serial lookup is useful corroboration, not a guarantee that the hardware in your hands is original. Counterfeit labels can copy a real serial, and a genuine drive can be relabeled or sold with inaccurate specifications. Use the lookup together with physical and behavioral checks.
Interpret warranty and support results correctly
Warranty databases are often misunderstood as authenticity databases. They primarily describe eligibility and support responsibility, which depend on sales channel, region and time.

| Lookup result or situation | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Model and serial are recognized with matching product details | The identifier is present in the manufacturer’s system. | Continue with label, software-identity and capacity checks; do not stop here. |
| Warranty is expired | The record may describe a genuine product whose coverage period has ended. | Use the model and serial for identity support, but do not treat expiration as evidence of counterfeiting. |
| No record or an error response | The number may be mistyped, outside the region or database scope, unregistered, counterfeit, or simply unsupported by that lookup. | Recheck every character and contact the manufacturer before reaching a verdict. |
| Internal drive sold through an OEM | The drive may be legitimate while the retail brand provides no direct warranty or support. | Check the computer maker or authorized channel’s coverage and retain the sales documentation. |
Western Digital’s guidance specifically warns that OEM internal drives may not carry the same direct warranty and support as retail internal drives. Its lookup definitions also distinguish out-of-warranty and no-result cases. Consequently, “no warranty” is not equivalent to “fake,” and a recognized serial is not equivalent to “all specifications are genuine.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspect packaging, labels and naming for warning signs
Use the following inspection as a set of indicators. None of these clues, including a perfect-looking label, authenticates the electronics inside.
- Tampering: broken seals, resealed plastic, mismatched tape, scratched screws or evidence that an enclosure was opened.
- Product naming: an impossible model number, a capacity that the model never offered, or a name that differs subtly from the manufacturer’s spelling.
- Typography and printing: spelling errors, blurred text, inconsistent fonts, low-resolution logos, missing regulatory marks or a label placed crookedly.
- Serial consistency: a package serial that differs from the drive label, or a label serial that differs from the value reported by software.
- Seller claims: “new” stock with signs of prior use, a region or interface not stated in the manufacturer’s documentation, or a price and specification combination that cannot be reconciled with the official model.
Western Digital lists tampering, incorrect product names, spelling errors and poor-quality or crooked labels among warning signs. Photograph each discrepancy instead of trying to repair or replace the label.
Verify capacity by testing storage behavior
Why copying a small file is inadequate
A fake-capacity device can accept a few gigabytes without error and still fail when the write position passes the real memory boundary. A test must exercise the address range you intend to use and verify that data read back is identical to data written. Merely checking the number displayed by the operating system, formatting the volume, or copying one sample file does not do that.
Choose a method for the storage type
Use a documented write/read verification method that explicitly supports the device and interface you have. Confirm whether it is intended for a magnetic HDD, an SSD, a USB flash drive, a memory card or an enclosure. The F3 documentation found for this topic discusses flash-drive verification; it should not be presented as a universal HDD procedure without checking the current tool documentation and drive type.

Protect data and plan for the time involved
A full-device test can overwrite every sector, so it is destructive unless the drive is empty or the method offers a genuinely non-destructive mode. Large-capacity devices can take many hours or longer to write and read completely. Confirm the test’s behavior, stop conditions, filesystem requirements and interface compatibility before starting. Keep the drive connected to stable power and avoid disconnecting it during a write pass.
Read the result conservatively
- Pass: the tested range returned the expected data under the tool’s stated conditions. This supports usable capacity but does not authenticate the brand, serial or sales provenance.
- Read/write errors: the media may be defective, degraded, disconnected or counterfeit. The result alone does not establish intent or identify the cause.
- Data corruption or wraparound: treat the device as unsafe. A controller that overwrites earlier blocks after the real capacity is exhausted is consistent with a misrepresented-capacity device.
- Test cannot run: check permissions, filesystem, cable, bridge and tool compatibility. Do not infer authenticity from an aborted or unsupported test.
If files already exist, use a non-destructive diagnostic documented for that exact drive type, or have the manufacturer or a qualified recovery professional advise you. Do not improvise a raw-device command from a tutorial intended for another operating system or interface.

| Observed combination | Most useful interpretation | Immediate action |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity is reported as advertised, but the model or serial is impossible | Identity or labeling is suspect even if the controller reports the expected size. | Stop using it for unique data and request manufacturer review. |
| Serial is recognized, label is plausible, but a complete supported test fails | Could be defective or degraded media, a bad bridge or a capacity misrepresentation. | Repeat only with a method appropriate to the device, then pursue warranty or seller resolution. |
| Serial lookup returns no warranty, while the drive came from an OEM system | Coverage may belong to the OEM rather than the retail brand. | Verify the original equipment maker’s support terms and retain proof of purchase. |
| Packaging is tampered or labels are misspelled and software identity differs | Several independent indicators point to substitution or misrepresentation. | Do not open or modify the product; preserve photos and seek a return or investigation. |
| All identity checks match and a supported test passes | The evidence is consistent with a genuine, usable device, but no consumer check proves provenance absolutely. | Keep backups and monitor health like any other storage device. |
Escalate inconsistent results instead of guessing
- Stop writing personal or irreplaceable data to the drive. If a test already wrote data, do not assume files are intact until they have been read and checked from a separate copy.
- Assemble the photographs, listing, invoice, model, serial, software identity and test log. Include the exact date and the interface used.
- Ask the manufacturer’s support team to verify the model and serial and to explain any regional, OEM or warranty limitation. Request written confirmation when possible.
- Contact the seller with the same evidence and request replacement or a refund under the applicable return policy. Preserve the original packaging until the dispute is closed.
- If the manufacturer cannot authenticate the product remotely, follow its instructions for an authorized inspection. HPE’s product-validation guidance notes that complete authentications can only be performed by its Brand Protection experts and that one security feature is not full authentication; other manufacturers may require a comparable specialist review.
Do not publish the serial number publicly while asking for help. Share it through the manufacturer’s or marketplace’s official support channel, and redact payment details and addresses from evidence sent to third parties.
A practical pre-use checklist
- ☐ Photograph package, labels, seals, listing and invoice.
- ☐ Identify whether the product is an internal SATA drive, an external enclosure or flash storage.
- ☐ Record the exact model, serial and firmware from the label and from software.
- ☐ Compare capacity and model naming with the manufacturer’s documentation.
- ☐ Run the official serial or warranty lookup and interpret OEM, expired and no-result responses correctly.
- ☐ Inspect for tampering, misspellings, crooked or poor-quality labels and mismatched serials.
- ☐ Back up existing files before any diagnostic that may write to the device.
- ☐ Use only a documented capacity test suitable for the actual storage technology and interface.
- ☐ Treat failures as evidence of an unsafe or defective device, not automatic proof of fraud.
- ☐ Keep unique data elsewhere until the manufacturer or seller resolves every conflict.
Bottom line
A high-capacity drive is ready for important data only when its physical identity, software identity, manufacturer records and storage behavior tell a consistent story. A large number in the operating system, an attractive enclosure or a single warranty result is not enough. When checks disagree, the safest conclusion is not “probably fine”; it is “unverified.” Preserve the evidence, avoid irreplaceable data and obtain a manufacturer or seller decision before relying on the drive.
