Find the drive’s complete model number and capacity, then verify that exact combination in the manufacturer’s official specifications or manual. Look for a field named Recording Technology, Recording method, CMR or SMR. A family name, enclosure label, capacity or speed test is not enough because one product family can contain both recording methods.
If the manufacturer does not identify the exact model and capacity, report the drive as unverified rather than guessing. There is no universal operating-system command or SMART attribute established for identifying CMR or SMR on every hard drive.

The reliable way to identify CMR or SMR
CMR (conventional magnetic recording) and SMR (shingled magnetic recording) describe how data tracks are written on a particular hard-disk model. The same brand and even the same retail family can include different recording methods across capacities or generations. The dependable process is therefore model-specific:

- Open the manufacturer’s product page, data sheet or manual for that exact identifier.
- Find an explicit statement such as Recording Technology: CMR or Recording method: SMR.
- If no primary document identifies that exact drive, mark the result unknown or unverified.
This approach matters for a replacement disk, a used-drive purchase and workloads such as NAS storage or sustained rewriting. It also prevents a common error: assuming every disk in a product family has the same recording method.

Why the exact model and capacity matter
A model family is a marketing category, not a recording-method specification. Western Digital states that its Red range includes both CMR and SMR drives and directs users to the individual Red, Red Plus and Red Pro data sheets. A Red label by itself therefore cannot answer the question.
Capacity can matter just as much as the family name. Western Digital’s WD Blue documentation identifies the 500 GB WD5000AZLX as CMR and the 2 TB WD20EZBX as SMR. Those statements apply to those exact variants; they do not classify every WD Blue drive. Generations can also change, so an old table or a visually similar label should not replace current documentation.
When checking a listing or a drive already installed in a computer, capture the complete identifier exactly as displayed. A missing suffix, regional variant or capacity mismatch can lead you to the wrong specification.
Step-by-step: identify an internal hard drive
1. Read the physical label when access is safe
Power down a desktop or external bay according to the equipment manufacturer’s procedure, then read the label on the drive. Record the model number, nominal capacity and interface (for example, SATA). Do not open a sealed enclosure merely to inspect a disk if doing so could void its warranty; use software or support information first.
2. Check the operating system
Open the system’s storage or device details and copy the device model string. The exact menu differs by operating system and edition, but the useful output is the hardware identifier, not just a volume name such as “Data” or “Backup.” If the operating system shows only a generic USB bridge name, continue with the enclosure and manufacturer checks below.
3. Check firmware or BIOS/UEFI
The drive list in BIOS or UEFI can reveal a model number. Western Digital notes that firmware may show only capacity, so this is an identification aid rather than a guaranteed source of the full identifier. If only capacity appears, do not infer CMR or SMR from it.

4. Use the manufacturer’s utility if available
A vendor diagnostic or management utility can expose the model string when the operating system hides it. Copy the identifier exactly, including letters, numbers and suffixes, and then verify it against the manufacturer’s current support pages.
5. Match all listed attributes
On the official page, match model number, capacity, interface and variant. If the page lists several capacities, select the row for your drive rather than assuming the whole table uses one recording method.
How to read the manufacturer’s documentation
Search the exact model number on the manufacturer’s support or product site, then open the technical data sheet or manual rather than relying on a retailer’s summary. Use the page’s find function for these terms:
- Recording Technology
- Recording method
- CMR
- SMR
Some manuals describe the method in a specification table; others place it in a technology or frequently asked questions section. Toshiba’s HDD specifications material explicitly contrasts CMR and SMR, and Seagate manuals for particular SkyHawk models label the covered capacities as CMR. The scope is the important part: a statement in a manual applies only to the models and capacities named there.
If a document says only “magnetic recording” or omits the method, that is not an identification. Contact the manufacturer with the full model and serial information, or leave the classification unverified. Third-party compatibility lists can be useful leads, but confirm them against a primary document before treating them as definitive.
External USB drives require extra caution
The name and capacity printed on a USB enclosure may describe the enclosure or retail package, not the disk installed inside. Western Digital cautions that enclosure internals can vary and that the model, recording technology, interface, power use, rotation speed and cache size are not guaranteed. Two units sold under the same enclosure name can therefore contain different internal drives.

First connect the drive and inspect the model string reported by the operating system, firmware or a vendor utility. If the USB bridge exposes only a generic name, ask the enclosure manufacturer for the internal model policy and provide the unit’s identification details. Treat an answer that covers only the enclosure family as insufficient.
Opening a single-drive enclosure is a last resort. Western Digital says disassembly can void the warranty; check the applicable warranty terms before removing the casing. Even after opening it, verify the label’s full model and capacity against current documentation rather than assuming the disk matches the retail name.
CMR and SMR: what the terms mean
CMR
CMR writes conventional, non-overlapping magnetic tracks. It is commonly selected when a workload involves frequent rewrites, sustained writes or array rebuilding and the system is designed around predictable write behavior. The recording method is only one factor, however; interface, cache, firmware, rotational speed, workload and drive condition also affect results.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →SMR
SMR increases areal density by overlapping adjacent tracks. Toshiba explains that when a track is rewritten, the drive may need to read and rewrite data in an overlapping track as well. That management can produce fluctuations in write speed, while the drive’s cache and caching algorithms help absorb some of the work.
Those mechanics explain why an SMR disk can behave differently during long or rewrite-heavy operations, but they do not make a speed observation a classifier. A CMR disk can slow because of a full cache, thermal throttling, bad sectors, a nearly full volume or a busy host, and an SMR disk can appear fast during a short cached transfer.
PMR is not a complete shortcut
CMR has historically also been called PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording). Toshiba notes that terminology, but documentation still needs to be matched to the exact model. “PMR” in a reseller listing, without a model-specific manufacturer statement, should not be treated as a universal answer to a CMR-versus-SMR question.

Official examples that show why model-level checking works
| Drive reference | What the official material states | What you may conclude |
|---|---|---|
Western Digital WD Blue WD5000AZLX, 500 GB |
Listed as CMR in the WD Blue product specifications. | This exact 500 GB variant is CMR; the statement does not classify other WD Blue capacities. |
Western Digital WD Blue WD20EZBX, 2 TB |
Listed as SMR in the WD Blue product specifications. | This exact 2 TB variant is SMR; do not generalize to the family. |
| Western Digital Red family | Western Digital says the range includes both CMR and SMR and points to individual Red, Red Plus and Red Pro data sheets. | The family name alone is insufficient; check the individual model and capacity. |
| Seagate SkyHawk models covered by a specific manual | The manual labels its named covered capacities as CMR. | Only the models and capacities listed in that manual are established as CMR. |
These examples are evidence of the method, not a substitute for checking your own drive. Specifications can change between generations, regions and capacity variants, so verify again before buying a replacement or building a new array.
Methods that do not prove CMR or SMR
Brand, family or capacity guesses
Neither a brand name nor a capacity number uniquely determines recording technology. Even within one family, manufacturers can use different media designs to meet cost, density or workload targets.
USB enclosure name
The enclosure’s retail capacity and model are not a guarantee of the internal disk. Obtain the internal identifier or treat the result as unknown.
A slow write test
SMR can cause write-speed fluctuations, but speed also depends on cache size, queue depth, file pattern, free space, temperature, interface, background activity and the drive’s health. A benchmark can reveal that a workload is unsuitable; it cannot, by itself, establish the recording method.
SMART data or one operating-system command
The official material considered here does not establish a SMART attribute or command that reports CMR or SMR universally. Some tools may display vendor-specific information for particular models, but that output must be validated for the precise device and tool. Absence of a field is not evidence of CMR, and an unlabeled “unknown” value is not evidence of SMR.

What to do when documentation is silent
- Recheck the model string for transcription errors and confirm the capacity and interface.
- Look for a regional support page, archived manual or technical data sheet from the manufacturer.
- Ask manufacturer support to identify the recording method for the exact model and capacity. Include the model number and, if requested, serial information.
- If the manufacturer still does not state it, record the result as unverified. Do not convert an unverified result into “probably CMR” or “probably SMR” based on age, price or observed performance.
For a purchase, ask the seller to provide the exact model and a manufacturer specification before paying. If the workload requires a known recording method and the seller cannot document it, choose a documented alternative instead of relying on a family-level promise.

Choosing between a documented CMR and an unverified drive
Recording method should be considered alongside workload and host compatibility. The table below is a decision aid, not a universal performance ranking.
| Situation | What to verify | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent rewrites, sustained write jobs or long array rebuilds | Exact model, stated CMR/SMR method, interface and host compatibility | Prefer a model whose manufacturer explicitly documents the method suited to the workload; do not infer it from family name. |
| Mostly archival or sequential reads | Capacity, health, warranty, interface and backup plan | Either method may be workable, but still verify the model so future behavior is not a surprise. |
| NAS or other managed storage array | NAS compatibility, workload guidance, exact capacity variant and recording method | Follow the enclosure or array vendor’s compatibility guidance and use primary drive specifications. |
| Used drive with incomplete listing | Full model string, power-on history and manufacturer documentation | Classify it as unverified until the exact model is documented; do not pay a premium for an assumed method. |
| USB external disk with no exposed model | Whether the enclosure guarantees an internal model and whether opening affects warranty | Seek manufacturer confirmation or select a product with transparent internal specifications. |
No recording method compensates for a failing disk, an incompatible interface or the absence of a tested backup. Check health and compatibility separately.
Troubleshooting common identification scenarios
Only the capacity appears in BIOS
Use the operating system’s device details, a vendor utility or the physical label to obtain the model. BIOS capacity alone cannot distinguish CMR from SMR.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe operating system reports a USB bridge name
Try another diagnostic utility, inspect the enclosure documentation and ask the manufacturer whether the bridge passes through the disk model. If the identifier remains hidden, keep the classification unverified rather than dismantling the enclosure immediately.
The product page lists several capacities but only one method
Check whether the statement applies to all listed capacities or only a subset. Match your capacity to the specification row; if the wording is ambiguous, request clarification from the manufacturer.
A retailer and a manufacturer disagree
Use the manufacturer’s current data sheet or manual as the controlling reference. Save a copy or note the document date for a purchase decision, because product generations and listings can change.
A benchmark shows a sudden drop in write speed
Treat the result as a performance symptom, not proof of SMR. Repeat only after checking free space, temperature, health status, workload pattern and background activity; then verify the model through official documentation.
Quick checklist
- Have I copied the complete model number, including suffixes?
- Did I match the exact capacity and interface?
- Am I looking at a manufacturer page, data sheet or manual rather than a family-level retailer description?
- Does the document explicitly say CMR, SMR, Recording Technology or Recording method?
- If the drive is external, have I confirmed the internal disk rather than trusting the enclosure name?
- Have I avoided using a speed test, PMR label or SMART guess as the sole evidence?
- If no primary source identifies the exact drive, have I labeled it unverified?
Following those checks gives you a defensible answer for a drive you own or are considering. The key is not recognizing a brand or guessing from behavior; it is matching one documented recording method to one exact model and capacity.
