For an Indian GST-registered taxpayer, a late return and a late tax payment can create different liabilities. A delayed return commonly raises a late-fee question; tax paid after its due date raises an interest question. A separate statutory penalty is not automatically added every time a return is filed late. To check your position, identify the exact return and tax period, read the due date shown for that period in the GST Portal, compare it with the filed return or ARN date, and then reconcile the portal’s late-fee and interest figures with your payment and electronic cash-ledger records.
The exact result depends on the form, filing frequency, tax period, actual filing date, tax-offset date, liability allocation and notifications applicable to that period. The following process helps you find the official record without treating a generic rate or an automatically displayed number as universally correct.

What people call a GST “penalty” may be a late fee or interest
GST compliance uses several different consequences. Their trigger and calculation are not interchangeable.

| Late fee | Specified details or a return furnished after its statutory due date | Return record and the amount shown by the GST Portal | Section 47 of the CGST Act covers specified failures, but amendments, notifications, return type and waivers can change the practical amount. |
| Interest | Tax paid or offset after the applicable payment due date | GSTR-3B Table 5.1 and the system-generated GSTR-3B PDF | The base, days and treatment of cash already deposited depend on the liability and payment records for the relevant period. |
| Separate penalty | A distinct statutory contravention or proceeding, rather than simply every late filing | The applicable provision, notice or order | Do not label every late fee or interest entry as a separate penalty. |
Section 47 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 contains late-fee provisions for specified failures. The Act page is not a consolidated calculator for every current return, amendment or waiver, so verify the rule and notification that applies to your form and period before relying on a daily amount or cap.

Information to collect before you check
Have these details ready. Without them, a portal figure cannot be matched reliably to the event that created it.
- The return form, such as GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B.
- The financial year and exact tax period.
- Your filing frequency: monthly or quarterly where the form permits an option.
- The due date displayed for that period in the GST Portal.
- The date the return was actually filed and its ARN. A draft or a date on which you merely prepared the return is not the filing date.
- The tax liability attributable to that period.
- The date tax was paid or offset through the electronic cash or credit ledger.
- Electronic Cash Ledger entries around the due date and offset date.
- Any notification, waiver or special extension that applied to the period.
Step-by-step: check the official due date and filing date
- Sign in to the GST Portal. Open Services → Returns → Returns Dashboard.
- Select the financial year and filing period. Choose the same period for which you are investigating a delay.
- Read the due date on the exact return tile. The dashboard workflow displays the due date available for that period. Record it rather than substituting a date from a general calendar.
- Confirm the return type and frequency. A monthly and a quarterly filer can have different deadlines, and different forms have different schedules.
- Open the filed-return record. Compare the displayed due date with the filed date and ARN. The filing event, not preparation or saving a draft, is what matters for lateness.
- Check for an applicable notification or waiver. Government notifications can move a deadline or reduce or waive a charge for a defined period, taxpayer category or jurisdiction.
The GST Portal’s GSTR3B filing guide describes period selection and the due-date display. Use that period-specific date even when a general article or older notice gives a different deadline.
Use the correct due-date pattern for GSTR-1
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 guide gives the ordinary pattern as the 11th of the succeeding month for monthly filers and the 13th after the quarter for quarterly filers. These are general dates, not a guarantee for every period. A government notification can change the deadline, so use the dashboard date for the relevant financial year and period and check any notification that applies to you.
After identifying the due date, compare it with the filed GSTR-1 date and ARN. If the return tile shows a revised deadline, that revised date is the one to test for late filing. Do not infer a late fee merely from a missed original calendar date when an extension was notified.
Where to see GSTR-3B interest and late-fee figures
For GSTR-3B, the portal may calculate or populate amounts in a later tax-period return. GSTN’s advisory on interest collection and related enhancements describes system-computed interest and the relevant treatment from the January 2026 tax period onward.
- Open the next applicable GSTR-3B filing in the return dashboard.
- Choose Prepare Online.
- Review Table 5.1 for the system-computed interest and any displayed late-fee amount.
- Use the option to download the System Generated GSTR-3B PDF.
- Keep the PDF with the filed return and ARN for your reconciliation file.
GSTN states that the detailed breakup can be verified from the system-generated PDF. That document is more useful than treating a single summary number as self-explanatory because it lets you inspect the period and components used by the system.

Reconcile the portal calculation instead of accepting it blindly
Work through the facts that drive the amount:
- Return period: Is the liability in the calculation from the period that was actually late?
- Due date: Is it the date shown for that form and period after any notified extension?
- Filing date: Does the ARN record show when the return was filed?
- Tax-offset date: When was the tax liability discharged through the relevant ledger?
- Ledger history: Was cash already lying in the Electronic Cash Ledger, and what was its balance between the due date and the offset?
- Allocation: Was the available cash applied to the same tax period and liability head you are reviewing?
- Relief: Did a waiver, amnesty, special extension or other notification apply?
GSTN’s advisory describes an enhancement for returns from the January 2026 tax period onward. In the cited Rule 88B(1) framework, the calculation accounts for the minimum cash balance in the Electronic Cash Ledger between the return due date and the tax-payment offset. A cash deposit made before the due date does not automatically mean every rupee of interest disappears; the system must apply the relevant liability and ledger rules.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If the displayed interest appears inconsistent
Where the return screen offers it, select RE-COMPUTE INTEREST, then review the updated amount and download a fresh system-generated PDF. GSTN’s March 2026 advisory reported that some interest for February 2026 displayed in March 2026 might not initially have reflected the cash-ledger balance benefit and described this recomputation route. That is a period-specific advisory, not evidence that every amount on every return is wrong.
Keep both the original and recomputed records if you are investigating a discrepancy. Note the return period, the time you ran recomputation and the ledger entries used in your own worksheet so another person can reproduce the comparison.
How the legal distinction affects your conclusion
Late filing
A return furnished after its applicable due date can attract a late fee under the specified provisions. The relevant form, statutory category, notification and waiver determine the operative amount. Because the CBIC Act page is an Act text rather than a current, return-by-return rate table, avoid copying one daily figure or cap into an evergreen calculation without checking later amendments and the exact category.
Late payment
Interest addresses delayed payment of tax. It is not simply another name for a late-filing fee. A return could be filed on time while tax is paid late, or a return could be filed late while the tax had already been deposited; those facts can lead to different calculations.

Separate penalty proceedings
A penalty is a distinct statutory consequence that generally requires the relevant contravention and process. The existence of a late-fee or interest line does not, by itself, prove that a separate penalty is due. If you have received a notice or order, read the provision cited there and obtain advice on the response deadline rather than treating the portal’s routine charge as the notice’s penalty.

Nil GSTR-3B does not automatically mean no amount is due
The GST Portal’s Nil GSTR-3B instructions require, among other conditions, that there be no outstanding interest or late fee. The portal can also block nil-return treatment when specified auto-populated or entered data is present.
Before selecting the nil option, verify the period’s outstanding balances and all nil conditions shown on the screen. A period with no outward supply or tax liability can still fail nil eligibility if an earlier late fee or interest remains outstanding. If the portal rejects the nil path, read the stated reason and resolve or investigate that item instead of repeatedly submitting a nil return.
Use a timeline rather than a single date
Late-compliance questions are easier to solve when you write the events in order. For example, record the tax period, the notified due date, the date you deposited cash, the date the ledger balance was offset against liability, and the date the return was filed. A deposit date and an offset date are not interchangeable. Likewise, the date a return was opened or saved is not the ARN filing date.
As an illustration, a monthly GSTR-1 tile might show a due date in the following month, while a quarterly filer for the same quarter sees a date after the quarter. If the dashboard later shows a government extension, use that revised date in the timeline. For GSTR-3B, place the Table 5.1 amount beside the tax-offset event and identify which period’s liability the system assigned. This chronology prevents a common error: comparing the filing date with a payment date from a different period.
Payment and ledger checks that often change the result
Review the Electronic Cash Ledger transaction-by-transaction. Note deposits, refunds, debits, and the running balance from the return due date through the offset date. The relevant question is not merely whether money entered the ledger, but whether the applicable minimum balance remained available while the liability was outstanding and whether the amount was allocated to the correct tax head.
Keep credit-ledger use separate from cash-ledger analysis. Your worksheet should identify how much liability was discharged by each ledger and on what date. If a payment was split across tax, interest or fee heads, check that the portal’s allocation matches the challan and offset records. Do not assume that an unexplained balance automatically cancels a displayed interest amount; ask the portal support team or a professional to trace the allocation.

Check notifications before relying on a generic calendar
Deadlines and relief can be period-specific. A notification may apply only to a particular financial year, class of taxpayer, state or tax period. Save the notification number or official link with your records and note the condition that makes it applicable. A general blog post, software reminder or old due-date list cannot override the period-specific dashboard date.

When a waiver or extension is claimed, verify both sides of the condition: the revised filing date and the taxpayer or jurisdiction covered. Some relief may affect a late fee without changing the underlying payment-interest analysis. Treat each charge separately and preserve evidence showing why the relief applies.

| Situation | First check | Why the result may differ from a simple calendar calculation |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 filed after the 11th or 13th | Dashboard due date, filing frequency, ARN and notifications | The period may have had a notified extension or a quarterly schedule. |
| GSTR-3B filed late with tax still unpaid | Table 5.1, system-generated PDF, filing date and tax-offset date | Late fee and interest are separate questions and may cover different periods. |
| Tax deposited before the due date but offset later | Electronic Cash Ledger’s minimum balance and the actual offset entry | The January 2026-onward enhancement considers the applicable cash balance under the Rule 88B(1) framework. |
| Portal amount changed after an update | Run RE-COMPUTE INTEREST when available and download the new PDF | The March 2026 advisory identified a specific display/calculation issue for some February 2026 cases. |
| Nil return option is unavailable | Outstanding interest or late fee and auto-populated or entered data | Nil eligibility has conditions beyond having no current-period tax payable. |
| A notice demands a penalty | The cited legal section, tax period, notice date and response deadline | A notice-based penalty is not the same as a routine late-fee or interest entry. |
Keep a reconciliation worksheet
A simple worksheet makes an eventual query much clearer. Use one row per return period and columns for form, frequency, due date, notified extension, ARN filing date, reported liability, cash deposited, cash-ledger minimum balance, offset date, displayed late fee, displayed interest, recomputed interest and notification reference. Add a notes column for unusual allocation or portal messages.
Save the worksheet with the filed return, ARN acknowledgement, dashboard due-date evidence, ledger extract and system-generated PDF. Record when each PDF was downloaded because portal values can be updated. This file is useful for internal review and gives a GST practitioner or support representative the facts needed to reproduce the result without guessing.
What to do when the records still do not agree
- Save the return dashboard screenshot or PDF showing the period and due date.
- Save the filed return and ARN record.
- Download the system-generated GSTR-3B PDF, including any recomputed version.
- Export or record Electronic Cash Ledger transactions covering the due date through the payment offset date.
- Prepare a period-by-period reconciliation showing liability, due date, filing date, offset date, displayed late fee and displayed interest.
- Check the applicable notification and the current wording of the relevant rule or Act provision.
- If the discrepancy remains, raise it through the GST Portal’s available support route and retain the reference number.
For a complex, disputed or high-value case, consult a qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant. Compare advisers by GST credentials, experience with the return type involved, clear scope and fees, and willingness to reconcile portal figures to your source records. Professional review is not required for every routine late return, but it can prevent an incorrect payment or response when the period, waiver or liability allocation is disputed.
A practical final checklist
- Correct form and tax period identified.
- Monthly or quarterly frequency confirmed where relevant.
- Period-specific dashboard due date recorded.
- Any extension, waiver or special notification checked.
- Filed date and ARN used instead of draft-preparation date.
- Late fee considered separately from interest and any distinct penalty proceeding.
- GSTR-3B Table 5.1 and system-generated PDF reviewed.
- Tax-offset date and Electronic Cash Ledger history reconciled.
- RE-COMPUTE INTEREST used where the portal provides it and a mismatch exists.
- Nil-return conditions checked, including absence of outstanding interest or late fee.
- Unresolved or notice-based issues escalated to a qualified professional.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if a GST late fee applies?
Select the exact form and tax period in Services → Returns → Returns Dashboard, record the due date shown for that tile, and compare it with the filed return date and ARN. Then check the amount displayed in the return record and verify any extension, waiver or notification for that period.
Best Value
Do I have to pay interest if I filed GSTR-3B late?
Possibly, but filing delay and payment delay are separate questions. Review the tax-offset date, liability for the period, Table 5.1 and the system-generated GSTR-3B PDF. A return filed late with tax already discharged can produce a different result from a return filed late while tax remained unpaid.
Where can I see GST late fee or interest in the portal?
For GSTR-3B, open the applicable return, choose Prepare Online and inspect Table 5.1. Download the System Generated GSTR-3B PDF for the detailed breakup. The portal may populate system-computed amounts in a later tax-period return.
Does a nil GST return still have a late fee?
Nil status does not itself remove an outstanding charge. The GST Portal lists absence of outstanding interest or late fee as a Nil GSTR-3B condition and may block nil filing when specified auto-populated or entered data exists.
Recommended Free Tools
Does depositing cash before the due date eliminate interest?
Not automatically. Check the Electronic Cash Ledger balance, the date and allocation of the offset, and the applicable calculation rules. For returns from the January 2026 tax period onward, GSTN describes treatment of the minimum cash balance between the due date and tax-payment offset under the cited Rule 88B(1) framework.
What should I do if the portal’s interest figure looks wrong?
Compare the period, due date, liability, offset date and ledger history. If available, select RE-COMPUTE INTEREST and download the revised PDF. GSTN’s March 2026 advisory described a specific February 2026 display issue, so retain both versions and do not assume every displayed amount is incorrect.
Is a GST late fee the same as a penalty?
No. Section 47 addresses late-fee liability for specified failures, while interest concerns delayed tax payment. A separate penalty generally involves a distinct contravention and process. Read any notice or order and the legal provision it cites instead of treating a routine portal charge as that penalty.
When should I consult a GST professional?
Consider a qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant when the period is covered by a disputed notification or waiver, ledger allocation is unclear, the amount is material, or you received a notice. Compare credentials, relevant return experience, scope and fees; routine cases may be resolved directly from the portal records.

To determine whether a GST delay created a charge, identify the exact return and period, use the due date shown on the GST Portal, compare it with the ARN filing date, and separate late fee, interest and any notice-based penalty. For GSTR-3B, reconcile Table 5.1 and the system-generated PDF with the tax-offset date and Electronic Cash Ledger history, using RE-COMPUTE INTEREST when available.
