An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with every network. The most reliable first step is to get the phone’s exact model and IMEI, then use the intended carrier’s official compatibility checker. For an iPhone, also check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock: “No SIM restrictions” means it is unlocked.
Unlocked and compatible mean different things
A carrier lock restricts a phone from being activated on another carrier. Compatibility is about whether the phone’s hardware and software can work on the destination network. An unlocked phone can still be rejected or have limited service if its model variant lacks the required bands or features, or if the carrier has blocked it.

The FCC explains that even phones using the same air-interface technology may not be compatible when networks use different spectrum bands. Check the exact model rather than relying on a family name such as a phone’s marketing name. Carrier-branded and international variants can differ.

- Find the exact model and IMEI. Ask the seller for the model number or variant and the device’s IMEI. On many phones, dialing *#06# displays the IMEI; it may also appear in the device settings. A dual-SIM phone can have more than one IMEI, so follow the checker’s instructions. For example, Spectrum tells customers with dual-SIM devices to enter IMEI1.
- Open the destination carrier’s official BYOD checker. Enter the IMEI for the phone you are considering, not an IMEI from a similar model. T-Mobile describes its IMEI check as its fastest and most accurate way to assess compatibility and check whether a device is locked or unlocked. Its results can include compatible, blocked, or unknown.
- Read the result as an eligibility check, not a service guarantee. A carrier’s acceptance does not establish that you will get the same coverage, speed, call quality, or features as with a phone sold by that carrier. Check local coverage and confirm that the phone supports the services you need.
Official checkers: T-Mobile IMEI checker, Spectrum Bring Your Own Device, and Rogers Bring Your Own Device. Rogers is a Canadian carrier; procedures and eligibility vary by country and carrier.

iPhone
On the phone, go to Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions,” Apple identifies the iPhone as unlocked. If it is locked, Apple says only the current carrier can unlock it; contact that carrier rather than Apple.

Menu names and unlock indicators vary by manufacturer and software version. Ask the seller to demonstrate the status or confirm it with the original carrier. Do not treat “it can be unlocked later” as proof that it is unlocked now. Even a successful compatibility check does not, by itself, prove the phone is free of a carrier lock.
Check account eligibility, blocks, and your return options
If the phone is still tied to an original carrier account or has an unpaid balance, it may not qualify for unlocking. Requirements are carrier-specific. AT&T’s policy, for example, includes conditions involving payment, time since purchase, lost-or-stolen or fraud status, and account standing; its prepaid requirements differ. That policy is an example, not a rule for other carriers.

Ask the seller whether the device is paid off and whether the original carrier confirms it is eligible for unlocking. Also ask whether it has been reported lost or stolen. Rogers provides lost/stolen status guidance in Canada, but there is no universal blacklist-check process established for every carrier and market.
When buying remotely, ask for the IMEI and proof of unlock status before paying. If the seller will not provide them or demonstrate the status, treat eligibility as unconfirmed and make sure you can return the phone if the carrier rejects it. The sources cited here do not establish a universal pre-purchase checker or a general right to return a phone for this reason.

Before committing, check the carrier’s requirements for the specific model and your intended use. Confirm supported bands, voice and data service, and whether you need eSIM, a physical SIM, or both. Check coverage where you will use the phone. A compatibility result does not promise identical performance or every feature, especially for a third-party handset.
