How to Check Whether a Diesel Blend Is Safe for Your Vehicle or Equipment

Do not decide from the word “diesel” or from a blend number alone. Identify the exact machine, read its current owner’s and engine manuals, verify the biodiesel percentage and fuel-quality specification, then confirm the warranty allows that blend in your country and operating conditions. If the documents do not clearly approve the fuel, ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer before filling the tank.

Government guidance generally treats B5 (up to 5% biodiesel) as broadly approved for diesel engines, while blends from B6 through B20 require confirmation in the engine maker’s warranty and instructions. There is no universal maximum that applies to every truck, tractor, generator, boat or other diesel unit.

What “diesel blend” means in this guide

“Diesel blend” can describe several fuels. The compatibility checks below concern biodiesel blended with petroleum diesel, such as B5 or B20. They should not be extended automatically to renewable diesel, heating oil, synthetic diesel or an unspecified fuel sold under a local trade name.

The number after the letter B is the biodiesel volume percentage:

Blend Biodiesel content Fuel-quality reference What the equipment owner must establish
B5 Up to 5% biodiesel DOE’s handling guide says it falls within ASTM D975 diesel specifications Whether the exact engine and warranty permit B5 in the relevant market
B6–B20 6% to 20% biodiesel ASTM D7467, when the fuel meets that specification The manufacturer’s approved ceiling, warranty language and operating restrictions
B100 Neat biodiesel Requires separate handling and suitability checks Whether the equipment was designed or modified for it; DOE warns it may require equipment changes

Fuel standards describe the fuel’s properties. They do not prove that a particular engine maker approves the fuel. An engine warranty can impose a lower limit than the fuel standard allows.

Why the exact machine matters

Approval is tied to the complete machine and its market, not to “diesel engines” in general. Record the manufacturer, model, model year, engine family or engine model, and country in which the unit is operated. A tractor manual, generator manual, marine-engine manual and vehicle manual can set different limits even when the fuel is sold from the same dispenser.

Emission-control hardware, fuel-system materials, calibration, seals, filters and warranty terms can vary by year and region. A statement for one engine family or one Chevrolet/GMC vehicle is an example, not a rule for every diesel product.

Six-step compatibility check

1. Identify the proposed fuel and the unit

  1. Read the pump, delivery ticket or supplier specification. Determine whether the fuel is conventional petroleum diesel, B5, B6–B20, B100 or another product.
  2. Write down the machine’s make, model, year, engine family, and operating country or market.
  3. For equipment with a separate engine maker, record both the equipment manufacturer and engine manufacturer. Check both sets of instructions.

If the seller cannot state the blend percentage and applicable quality certification, stop at this stage. You cannot verify compatibility with an unknown fuel.

2. Find the controlling documents

Use the current owner’s manual, engine manual, fuel-filler label, service information and warranty booklet. Search the fuel sections for “biodiesel,” “B5,” “B20,” “fuel requirements,” “ASTM D975,” “ASTM D7467,” storage instructions and warranty exclusions.

For a tractor, generator, boat or construction machine, the engine documentation may be more specific than the equipment handbook. Government guidance from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) emphasizes checking the original-equipment manufacturer’s engine warranty when considering blends above B5.

3. Match both the percentage and the fuel specification

Confirm two separate facts:

  • Percentage: the document must allow the proposed biodiesel level, not merely “diesel” or “low-sulfur diesel.”
  • Quality: the fuel must meet the specification named by the manual and local rules.

DOE’s Biodiesel Handling and Use Guide: Sixth Edition describes up to 5 volume percent (B5) as covered by ASTM D975 and B6–B20 as covered by ASTM D7467. ASTM editions can be revised, so verify the current applicable edition and the exact wording in your machine’s documentation. A compliant batch can still be outside the equipment maker’s approved blend range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Apply temperature, storage and duty-cycle restrictions

Check the manual for ambient-temperature limits, filter requirements, storage duration and procedures after long periods of nonuse. Higher biodiesel blends can gel in cold conditions and can create storage-management problems. Infrequently used emergency generators and seasonal equipment deserve special attention because fuel may remain in the tank for months.

As a manufacturer-specific example, the 2018 Chevrolet/GMC Duramax Diesel Supplement recommends avoiding biodiesel blends above B5 below 0°C (32°F), citing possible fuel-filter plugging, gelling and freezing. That threshold applies to the vehicles covered by that supplement; it is not a universal cold-weather limit.

5. Check the country, labeling and warranty language

Fuel labels and legal specifications differ by market. Use the manual and warranty for the country where the machine is operated, and make sure the pump label matches the fuel you intend to buy. If an imported vehicle has documentation from another market, ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer which local fuel specification and blend limit controls the warranty.

6. Buy only after approval is clear

Once the percentage, quality specification and operating conditions match the manufacturer’s instructions, purchase from a certified commercial source identified by the manual or local regulations. Keep the receipt, product specification and blend label with the maintenance records. Do not use an additive, filter or home test kit as a substitute for an OEM approval; a test cannot change a warranty’s blend limit.

Use a written decision worksheet

For a fleet or several machines, record the decision instead of relying on a verbal assumption. Create one line for each unit with its make, model, year, engine family, market, approved maximum blend, required fuel specification, temperature restrictions, storage instructions and warranty reference. Add the date the information was checked because manuals, warranty booklets, fuel labels and ASTM editions can be updated.

Keep a copy of the pump label or delivery ticket showing the blend percentage. If the supplier uses a product name rather than a B-number, request the biodiesel percentage and certification in writing. A delivery identified only as “diesel” leaves the key compatibility fact unresolved. For multiple suppliers, compare their certificates and make sure each source identifies the same specification required by the engine maker.

How to interpret B5, B20 and B100 decisions

B5: often broadly accepted, still verify

DOE and related U.S. government guidance generally indicate that original equipment manufacturers approve B5. “Generally” is important: the exact manual remains controlling, particularly for an older engine, a specialized application or a machine operated outside the United States. Confirm that the pump’s B5 product also meets the required diesel specification.

B5 means no more than 5% biodiesel by volume; it does not mean that any fuel carrying a similar name is automatically B5. Check for the actual percentage and for the diesel specification listed by the supplier. If the manual permits ordinary diesel but says nothing about biodiesel, obtain clarification rather than treating silence as approval.

B6 through B20: an explicit OEM decision is required

AFDC notes that many engines can use B20 without modification, but it directs users to the manufacturer’s warranty statements. Treat B20 as a model-specific decision, not as a default upgrade from B5. Look for a stated maximum, required fuel quality, service interval changes, approved suppliers, and restrictions on temperature or storage.

A manual may approve “up to B20” while separately limiting cold-weather use or requiring a particular filter. Follow every condition, not just the headline percentage. “Up to B20” also does not approve B21, B30 or B100; a higher percentage requires its own documented approval.

Above B20 and B100: assume special requirements until documented otherwise

DOE guidance says blends above B20 may need special handling or equipment modifications. B100 is neat biodiesel and is not a default fuel choice for ordinary diesel equipment. It has lower energy per gallon than petroleum diesel and may affect starting, range or operating behavior; the key question remains whether the manufacturer designed and warranted the machine for it.

Do not infer approval from the fact that a fuel is available commercially. Commercial availability addresses distribution, not the engine’s warranty. If a machine has been modified for a high blend, obtain documentation showing that the modification, fuel quality and maintenance procedure are approved for that specific engine.

Fuel standard versus engine approval

Use this two-part test before refueling:

Question Evidence you need Why it matters
What is in the fuel? Blend percentage, supplier statement and applicable ASTM or local specification Establishes the fuel’s identity and quality
May this machine use it? Current owner/engine manual and warranty for the exact model, year and market Establishes the manufacturer’s permitted use
Will conditions remain within limits? Temperature, storage period, duty cycle and any filter or service instructions Prevents an approved blend from becoming unsuitable in actual operation

Passing the first row does not pass the second. ASTM D975 or D7467 compliance is not an engine-maker approval stamp. Conversely, an engine maker’s approval does not remove the need to buy fuel that meets the required specification.

What to ask a supplier before purchase

  • What is the exact biodiesel percentage by volume?
  • Which current fuel specification does the batch meet?
  • Can you provide a certificate, label or delivery document identifying that specification?
  • Is the product intended for the country and season in which the machine will operate?
  • Does the supplier have storage or turnover guidance for this blend?

These questions establish what is being sold. They do not replace the manufacturer’s answer about whether your engine may use it. If the supplier cannot identify the blend or quality certification, choose a source that can.

What to do when the manual is unclear

  1. Photograph or copy the exact fuel-label wording and the relevant manual pages.
  2. Ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer: “Is [exact blend percentage] approved for [make, model, year, engine family] in [country] under the current warranty?”
  3. Ask whether there are limits for ambient temperature, storage time, filters, service intervals, emissions equipment or fuel suppliers.
  4. Request the answer in writing or obtain a service bulletin or warranty reference.
  5. Do not refuel with the proposed blend until the answer covers both percentage and fuel quality.

A generic statement such as “diesel engines can use biodiesel” does not resolve a model-specific question. If the manufacturer cannot confirm the blend, use the fuel that the current manual explicitly specifies.

Operating conditions that can change the answer

Cold weather

Biodiesel’s cold-flow behavior can increase the risk of filter plugging, gelling or freezing as temperature falls, especially at higher blend levels. Check the machine’s cold-weather table and the supplier’s seasonal specification. Do not transplant the 0°C Duramax recommendation to another engine; use it only as an illustration of why model-specific limits matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long storage or intermittent use

Storage guidance can include tank preparation, fuel turnover, inspection and filter service. Emergency generators, boats, farm equipment and backup pumps may sit idle far longer than a daily-driven vehicle. If the manual limits storage time or prescribes a treatment, follow that procedure before leaving the machine unused.

Equipment type and fuel-system design

Vehicles, tractors, generators, marine engines and off-road equipment can have different seals, injectors, emission systems and warranty terms. A blend approved for a pickup is not automatically approved for a generator or boat. Check the engine documentation for each unit.

Do not confuse station and tank rules with vehicle approval

Fuel-storage infrastructure has its own regulatory requirements. DOE’s underground-storage-tank guidance describes compatibility demonstrations and 30-day advance notification for certain U.S. systems storing blends above B20. Those rules concern tanks and dispensing infrastructure; they do not establish what blend an engine may burn. A station can legally store a fuel that your vehicle warranty does not permit.

A practical comparison before choosing between two blends

When both B5 and a higher blend are available, compare the choices against the same five criteria rather than assuming the higher percentage is better:

Decision factor B5 option Higher-blend option
Biodiesel percentage Up to 5% B6–B20 or another stated level
OEM limit Confirm the exact manual permits B5 Obtain explicit approval and warranty coverage for the stated level
Fuel specification Check the required diesel specification, commonly ASTM D975 for B5 in DOE guidance Check the required specification, commonly ASTM D7467 for B6–B20 in DOE guidance
Conditions Review cold and storage instructions Pay particular attention to cold-flow, storage and filter restrictions
Market labeling Use the label and rules for the operating country Use the label and rules for the operating country; higher blends may have distinct pump labels

Choose the option that satisfies every row. A higher biodiesel percentage is not automatically safer, cleaner for your particular machine or covered by its warranty.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“The pump says diesel, so it is compatible.”

Correction: Read the blend label and obtain the specification. “Diesel” alone does not disclose biodiesel content.

“ASTM-compliant fuel is approved for every engine.”

Correction: Treat ASTM compliance as the fuel-quality check only. Confirm the OEM percentage limit separately.

“B20 is safe because many engines use it.”

Correction: Check the exact warranty and manual. AFDC’s statement about many engines does not approve B20 for an unspecified unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A limit in one truck manual applies to all diesels.”

Correction: Attribute each temperature or blend limit to its covered model and market. Obtain the instructions for your own equipment.

“A home test kit can prove the fuel is acceptable.”

Correction: A test kit cannot establish OEM approval, and the cited Chevrolet Duramax guidance warns that home biodiesel test kits cannot verify quality through approved scientific methods. Buy fuel that meets the documented specification from a certified commercial source.

“If the machine runs, the warranty must be safe.”

Correction: Operation without immediate symptoms does not change a written warranty exclusion. Resolve approval before use and keep documentation.

“The same answer applies to every machine in a fleet.”

Correction: Check each make, model, engine family, year and market. Even machines that look identical can have different manuals or warranty terms.

Record-keeping checklist

  • Machine make, model, year and engine family
  • Country or market of operation
  • Manual and warranty revision or publication date
  • Proposed blend percentage and pump label
  • Fuel-quality specification and supplier certification
  • Ambient-temperature range and expected storage duration
  • Written response from the manufacturer or dealer, if required
  • Purchase receipt and maintenance record

This record makes the decision repeatable when fuel suppliers, seasons or operators change. It also gives a dealer the exact information needed to answer a compatibility question instead of forcing a guess from the word “diesel.”

Bottom line: the safe maximum is model-specific

Start with the exact vehicle or engine, not with a general claim about diesel. B5 is broadly approved in DOE/EPA guidance, but B6–B20 requires the manufacturer’s confirmation, and blends above B20 or B100 may require special handling or equipment changes. Verify the fuel percentage, applicable specification, warranty, temperature limits and storage instructions for the machine’s country. If any part is ambiguous, pause and contact the manufacturer or authorized dealer before refueling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use B20 in my diesel truck?

Only if the current manual and warranty for your exact truck, engine, model year and market approve B20. AFDC says many engines can use B20 without modification, but that general statement does not replace the manufacturer’s warranty. Also check the required ASTM D7467 fuel quality, temperature limits and storage instructions.

What biodiesel blend can my tractor use?

There is no universal tractor limit. Check the tractor manual, the engine maker’s documentation and the warranty for the specific model and country. B5 is generally approved in DOE guidance; B6–B20 needs explicit OEM confirmation, and higher blends may require special handling or modifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is ASTM D975 or ASTM D7467 approval enough?

No. ASTM D975 and D7467 describe fuel quality. The engine maker separately decides which biodiesel percentages are permitted. A batch can meet the applicable standard and still be outside your equipment’s warranty limit.

What does B5 mean at the pump?

B5 means no more than 5% biodiesel by volume. DOE’s handling guide places up to B5 within ASTM D975 diesel specifications, but you should still confirm that your exact machine and local warranty permit it and that the fuel label identifies the required specification.

Can I use B100 in ordinary diesel equipment?

Do not assume so. B100 is neat biodiesel; DOE says it requires special handling and may require equipment modifications. Use it only when the manufacturer documents approval for your exact engine and operating conditions.

What if the manual does not mention biodiesel?

Treat the omission as unresolved, not as approval. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer with the exact blend percentage, make, model, year, engine family and country, and request a written warranty or service-bulletin reference before refueling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does cold weather change biodiesel compatibility?

It can. Higher blends may gel and contribute to filter plugging or freezing in cold conditions. Follow the machine’s own temperature guidance. For example, the 2018 Chevrolet/GMC Duramax supplement recommends avoiding blends above B5 below 0°C (32°F) for the vehicles it covers; that is not a universal limit.

Do underground tank rules prove that my vehicle can use a blend?

No. Certain U.S. underground-storage systems holding blends above B20 may require compatibility demonstrations and 30-day advance notification. Those rules concern tanks and dispensing infrastructure, not the blend approved for an engine.

The Bottom Line

Verify before refueling: identify the exact machine, confirm the biodiesel percentage and fuel specification, read the current manual and warranty, check temperature and storage limits, and obtain written OEM or dealer confirmation whenever the blend is not clearly approved.
