Find the complete tool model, identify whether it is a 12V MAX, 20V MAX, FLEXVOLT/60V MAX, or legacy 18V product, then confirm the approved battery list in the current DEWALT manual or product/support page. FLEXVOLT is the important cross-platform exception: DEWALT lists supported FLEXVOLT packs for 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. Older 18V tools require a separate check because the DCA1820 adapter works only with eligible combinations and explicitly excludes FLEXVOLT batteries.
The six-step compatibility check
Use this process before inserting a battery or ordering a replacement:

- Record the complete tool model. Read every letter and number on the tool label, battery bay, carton, or operator manual. A family name such as “20V MAX” is not enough to identify the approved packs.
- Record the battery model and platform. The model is usually printed on the battery housing. Note both the model, such as DCB609 or DCB124, and the platform marking.
- Look up the exact tool. Use DEWALT’s current product page or operator manual. The manual’s battery/charger table takes priority over a general platform statement.
- Match the platform and approved model list. Confirm that the tool is specified for the battery family and that the particular pack is included or otherwise approved.
- Verify charging separately. A battery that powers a tool is not automatically suitable for every DEWALT charger. Check the charger model against the battery documentation.
- Stop if the records conflict. Ask DEWALT support with both model numbers rather than forcing the pack, modifying the contacts, or relying on an unverified third-party adapter.
Start with the exact model numbers
Where to find the tool number
Look for the model label on the tool body, near the battery slot, under a removable foot, or in the operator manual. Record the entire designation, including suffixes. Two tools in the same voltage family can have different battery approvals, and a kit number may identify a bundle rather than the bare tool.

Where to find the battery number
Read the label on the battery itself, not only the packaging. Capacity markings such as 1.5Ah, 5Ah, or 9Ah describe stored energy; they do not prove that the pack is accepted by a particular tool. Write down the model and the platform marking together.

Keep the charger number in the same record
Include the charger model when checking a setup. A tool-and-battery match answers only whether the pack can be used in the tool. Charging approval is a separate question.
Identify the DEWALT platform before comparing batteries

What each battery family can and cannot tell you
12V MAX tools and batteries
DEWALT’s 12V MAX system page states: “XTREME™ 12V MAX* tools are compatible with all 12V MAX* batteries and chargers.” That is a platform-specific statement. It does not establish that a 12V MAX pack can operate a 20V MAX tool, nor that a 20V MAX charger is approved for every 12V pack.
A DCB124 is an example of a 12V MAX battery. Treat it as a 12V-platform option only after the exact tool and charger documentation confirms the combination. If the tool label says 12V MAX, stay within that platform unless DEWALT’s manual explicitly says otherwise.

20V MAX tools and batteries
A 20V MAX label identifies the tool family, but the model-level listing still controls. Confirm the pack model in the tool manual or product page. Capacity choices can then be compared for runtime, size, and weight.

DEWALT’s FLEXVOLT system page says, “FLEXVOLT® batteries are compatible with DEWALT 20V MAX* power tools.” The statement makes FLEXVOLT the major cross-platform exception, but it does not remove the need to check the particular tool and battery model. A pack that is listed for one 20V MAX tool is not evidence that every 20V MAX tool has identical operating limits.
FLEXVOLT packs in 60V MAX tools
FLEXVOLT packs are designed to switch operating voltage for supported DEWALT tools. DEWALT lists FLEXVOLT batteries for 60V MAX tools, so a compatible 60V MAX tool must be checked against the specific pack and its manual. Some 120V MAX configurations use two 60V MAX batteries; that is a system requirement, not a way to make one pack operate a tool rated for a different platform.
Legacy 18V tools and the DCA1820 adapter
The DCA1820 is a limited bridge between generations. DEWALT says it allows 20V MAX batteries in most 18V tools, but its support information names tool and battery exclusions. The adapter product page states: “This adapter will not work with 20/60V FLEXVOLT® batteries.” Therefore, a FLEXVOLT pack is not a substitute for an eligible 20V MAX pack on an 18V tool using DCA1820.

Why the voltage number can mislead you
DEWALT explains that “MAX” voltage is the maximum initial voltage measured without a workload. Its listed nominal values are lower: 12V MAX is 10.8V nominal, 20V MAX is 18V nominal, and FLEXVOLT operation at 60V MAX is listed as 54V nominal.
Those two labels describe different measurement conventions; they do not by themselves establish interchangeability. A 12V MAX and 20V MAX battery are not made compatible merely because their printed numbers appear on the same brand’s products. Conversely, FLEXVOLT’s 20V/60V switching is a designed platform feature, not a general rule for every battery with a similar voltage marking.
Verify the tool’s approved battery list
Use the operator manual first
Search the manual for “battery,” “charger,” “compatible,” or a battery/charger table. Some manuals list approved pack families, capacities, or exceptions. Use the complete tool model from the cover and rating label so that a manual for a similar-looking tool is not substituted.
Check the official product page
DEWALT product pages can state the platform, compatible batteries, and charger families. Compare the model number shown on the page with your tool label. If a product page gives a general platform description but the manual gives a narrower approved list, follow the narrower list.

Resolve regional or revision differences
DEWALT notes that product pages can change and that regional tool lines or model revisions may differ. A listing from another country, an old PDF, or a retailer’s bundle description may not cover your exact version. When the model cannot be found or the documents disagree, provide both model numbers to DEWALT support and wait for a model-specific answer.
Check charging independently
Charging is not automatically covered by a tool-and-battery match. Confirm that the charger is listed for the battery platform and model family.

Never force a pack onto a charger because the rails or contacts look similar. If the charger indicator behaves unexpectedly, the pack becomes unusually hot, or the manual does not list the combination, stop and obtain confirmation.
Compare batteries only after compatibility is confirmed
Once the tool manual confirms that several packs are valid, compare them in this order: platform and exact-model approval, capacity/runtime, physical size and weight, charger support, and any adapter restrictions.

Capacity is not compatibility
A higher Ah rating generally represents more stored capacity, but it does not override a tool’s approved model list. The pack must first be electrically and mechanically specified for the tool. After that check, consider whether its added size or weight is practical for drilling overhead, fastening, cutting, or extended work.
Runtime claims need their baseline
Keep the comparison conditions attached to the number. DEWALT’s “up to 6X” statement compares the DCB609 with the DCB201 1.5Ah pack in 20V MAX tools. It is not a promise that every tool will run six times longer, and it is not an independent test.
Common assumptions that fail
- “The connector fits, so it is compatible.” Mechanical fit does not confirm voltage control, communication, thermal protection, or manufacturer approval.
- “Both labels say MAX.” 12V MAX, 20V MAX, and 60V MAX are different platforms. The MAX convention also describes maximum initial voltage, not the nominal operating value.
- “A 20V battery always works in an 18V tool.” Only the eligible legacy combinations covered by DCA1820 are supported, and FLEXVOLT batteries are excluded from that adapter.
- “A battery that powers the tool can use any charger.” Charger compatibility must be verified separately.
- “A larger Ah pack is automatically an upgrade.” Capacity may add weight and bulk, and it cannot make an unlisted battery compatible.
- “A retailer’s kit description is the final authority.” Use the current DEWALT manual or support table for the exact model, especially for older or region-specific tools.
Troubleshoot a battery that will not work
If the pack will not slide into the tool
- Remove the battery and inspect the tool and pack for debris, damaged rails, or a deformed housing.
- Recheck both model numbers and platform markings. A 12V, 20V, FLEXVOLT, and legacy 18V setup may look similar while being unsupported.
- Compare the exact tool manual with the battery model. Do not sand, trim, or modify the housing.
- If an 18V tool is involved, verify that the DCA1820 is approved for that model and that the battery is not a FLEXVOLT pack.
If the tool accepts the pack but does not start
- Confirm that the battery has charge on an approved charger.
- Check the tool’s manual for lockout, trigger, temperature, or overload conditions.
- Try only another battery model that the manual explicitly approves; do not use an unlisted pack as a diagnostic shortcut.
- If approved combinations still fail, stop using the tool and contact DEWALT service with the tool and battery numbers.
If charging fails
- Verify the charger model and platform support independently from the tool match.
- Check that the pack is seated correctly and that the charger is receiving power.
- Stop if the pack or charger becomes unusually hot, shows damage, or produces an unexpected indicator pattern.
- Do not bypass charger controls or use a modified adapter.
A purchase checklist
- Complete tool model copied from the rating label or manual.
- Battery model and platform copied from the battery housing.
- Exact battery approval found in the tool’s current manual or DEWALT product/support page.
- Charger model confirmed for that battery family.
- For an 18V tool, DCA1820 eligibility checked in the current support table.
- FLEXVOLT exclusion checked before using DCA1820.
- Capacity, weight, size, and runtime claim compared only among already-approved packs.
- DEWALT support contacted when the model is missing, revised, regional, or listed inconsistently.
When to ask DEWALT instead of guessing
Contact DEWALT with a photo or transcription of the tool model, battery model, and charger model when any number is incomplete, the tool is an older 18V product, the manual and product page disagree, or an adapter is involved. Product specifications are manufacturer guidance rather than an independent compatibility study, and no universal cross-tool compatibility rate can be inferred from them. The exact tool and battery model numbers, together with the current manual, govern the safe decision.
