Use UIDAI’s official Verify Aadhaar Number service to see whether the Aadhaar number returns a valid or inactive result. The result does not, by itself, explain why the number is inactive or prove that UIDAI deactivated it after a death report. For the reason, contact UIDAI at 1947, through the official email shown on UIDAI’s website, or via a UIDAI Regional Office. If the death has not been reported, an authenticated family member can use the Reporting of Death of a Family Member service in myAadhaar where that jurisdiction is supported.
What you can actually verify
Aadhaar status is checked against UIDAI’s database, not against the physical card, a photocopy, or a PDF downloaded before the person died. A card can still exist even when the underlying number is inactive. The relevant evidence is the response from UIDAI’s live verification service.

UIDAI’s public service information establishes that Aadhaar verification is available, and its FAQ directs people who see a deactivated status to contact support for the reason. It does not promise that the public result will display a “deceased” label, identify the person who reported the death, or show the date and cause of deactivation. Do not assume that an inactive response necessarily means a death report; ask UIDAI to explain the status.

A valid or active response means only that UIDAI accepted the number as valid when you performed the check. It is not a certificate that the holder is alive, and it does not prove that no death information has been submitted. An inactive or deactivated response means the number did not return an active result at that time. It does not tell you whether the trigger was a death record, another administrative action, a data-quality issue or an unresolved report.

An error, timeout or rejected request is not a status result. It may reflect a typing mistake, a temporary service problem or a different issue. Treat it as unresolved until you have checked the digits and obtained an answer through UIDAI.
Before you begin
Have the correct Aadhaar number
Use the 12-digit Aadhaar number belonging to the deceased person. Check each digit against an authoritative family record before submitting it. Do not test numbers copied from an unverified message or a document that may contain a typographical error.
Protect the number and documents
- Use only UIDAI’s official website and its official service pages.
- Do not enter the number into an unofficial “Aadhaar checker,” social-media form, or third-party app.
- Keep the death certificate, Death Registration Number, and demographic details available if you need to contact UIDAI or report the death.
- Do not publish the full Aadhaar number in an email, screenshot, family-group message, or public post. Share only what an official UIDAI channel requests.
Know whether the death was already reported
The verification step and the death-reporting step are different. A family member may have obtained a death certificate without yet submitting the death information to UIDAI. Conversely, someone may already have submitted a report that UIDAI is still validating. An online submission is not confirmation that deactivation has occurred.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAsk relatives, the person who handled the funeral paperwork and the death-registering authority whether a report was submitted, but do not rely on an informal assurance as proof. The only useful status evidence is the current UIDAI response or an explanation from UIDAI support.
Step-by-step: verify the Aadhaar number
- Open UIDAI’s official website. Navigate to the service labelled Verify Aadhaar Number. Check the browser address and page branding before entering any personal information.
- Enter the deceased person’s Aadhaar number. Use the number exactly as issued. Do not substitute an enrolment ID, virtual ID, or another family member’s number.
- Submit the verification request. Read the service response carefully. Record the date and the wording shown on screen if you need to discuss it with UIDAI.
- Stop if the response is unclear. If the page says the number is inactive, deactivated, invalid, or otherwise does not clearly answer your question, do not infer the reason. Move to the UIDAI support step below.
Keep a simple record of the check
Write down the date and time, the exact wording, and any reference or acknowledgement number displayed by the service. A private note is usually sufficient; avoid taking screenshots that expose the full number unless an official support representative specifically requests one. If you must send evidence, mask all but the digits UIDAI says it needs and use the contact method listed on UIDAI’s website.
How to interpret the result
| Verification response | What it establishes | What it does not establish | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| The number verifies as valid or active | UIDAI’s service accepted the number as valid at the time you checked. | It does not prove that the person’s death was never reported, nor does it replace estate, pension, banking, or civil-registration procedures. | If you expected a death-related deactivation, contact UIDAI and ask whether a report is pending or whether another record needs correction. |
| The number is shown as inactive or deactivated | The number did not return an active verification result when checked. | The public result does not identify the reason, date, or source of the deactivation. | Call UIDAI at 1947, use the official UIDAI email, or approach a Regional Office for an explanation. |
| The service cannot answer or produces an error | Only that the check was not completed successfully at that moment. | It does not prove that the Aadhaar is active, inactive, or linked to a death record. | Retry through the official service later, verify the digits, and contact UIDAI if the problem continues. |
UIDAI’s public material does not specify one universal result-screen wording for every situation. Preserve the exact message rather than translating it into “deceased” or another label that the service did not display.
Why an inactive result needs a follow-up
The verifier is designed to answer whether the number verifies, not to disclose a complete case history. A relative may therefore see an inactive result without being able to determine whether UIDAI matched a death record, acted on another basis, or is still correcting data. UIDAI can decide what information to disclose after checking your identity and relationship. Do not try to obtain the explanation from a bank, agent or unrelated website; those parties cannot substitute for UIDAI’s record.

What to do when the number is inactive
Ask UIDAI for the reason
UIDAI’s FAQ directs people who see a deactivated status to support. Contact 1947, use the official email address published by UIDAI, or visit the relevant UIDAI Regional or State Office. Explain that you are an authenticated family member asking about a deceased person’s Aadhaar and that the public verification result is inactive or unclear.
Have these details ready, but disclose them only through the official channel:
- The Aadhaar number concerned.
- The deceased person’s name and demographic details requested by UIDAI.
- Your relationship to the person and your own identity or authentication details, if UIDAI asks for them.
- The death certificate and Death Registration Number.
- The date you used Verify Aadhaar Number and the exact response you received.
Ask specifically whether the number was deactivated because of a death record, another administrative reason, a data-quality issue, or a report that still requires validation. UIDAI may limit the information it discloses to protect personal data; follow the support team’s instructions for proving your relationship.
What to expect from support
Support may tell you which office or process applies, request additional identity or relationship evidence, or direct you to the death-registering authority. There is no published promise that a telephone call will reveal every historical detail or provide an immediate decision. Note the date of your contact, any complaint or reference number, and the next step you are given. If you visit an office, carry originals for inspection and copies only where the office asks for them.
Do not treat an old card as contradictory evidence
A printed Aadhaar letter, PVC card, or previously downloaded e-Aadhaar is a document showing that a number was issued. None of those items is a live status check. If the document appears to conflict with UIDAI’s current response, rely on the current service response and ask UIDAI to explain it.
Reporting a death through myAadhaar
If the death has not yet been reported to UIDAI, an authenticated family member can use myAadhaar’s Reporting of Death of a Family Member service when it is available for the jurisdiction where the death was registered.
Documents and information required
- A death certificate issued by the authority that registered the death.
- The deceased person’s Aadhaar number.
- The Death Registration Number.
- Other demographic details requested by the portal.
- The reporter’s authentication as required by myAadhaar.
Submission process
- Obtain the death certificate from the death-registering authority if it has not already been issued.
- Sign in to the official myAadhaar portal and select Reporting of Death of a Family Member.
- Authenticate as the reporting family member.
- Enter the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and the demographic information requested on screen.
- Review every field before submitting. A wrong digit or registration number can delay validation or associate the report with the wrong record.
- Save the acknowledgement or reference information supplied by the portal.
UIDAI validates the submitted information against the death registrar’s database and the Aadhaar database before taking deactivation action. Sending the form is therefore a request for validation, not proof that the Aadhaar has already been deactivated. Use Verify Aadhaar Number later, or ask UIDAI for the outcome, if you need confirmation.

Portal coverage can change
UIDAI announced the family death-reporting service on 9 June 2025. That launch announcement covered deaths registered in 24 states and union territories. An official UIDAI/MeitY update dated 26 November 2025 said coverage had reached 25 states and union territories, with integration elsewhere under way. Those figures are dated snapshots, not a current list of supported jurisdictions as of October 2026. Check the live myAadhaar portal or ask UIDAI before assuming that a particular state or union territory is included.
The portal may change its sign-in, authentication or data fields as integration expands. Follow the fields currently shown rather than relying on an old tutorial or a family member’s description of the process. If the service is absent or rejects the registration details, do not keep resubmitting altered information.
If your jurisdiction is not available
Do not select a different state or enter altered registration information just to force a submission. Contact UIDAI at 1947 or the relevant death-registering authority for instructions. The civil-registration office can clarify the certificate or registration record; UIDAI can explain how and when that record can be used for Aadhaar action.
If a living person was wrongly marked deceased
UIDAI has a reactivation route for a living Aadhaar holder whose number was wrongly treated as belonging to a deceased person. The holder should approach a UIDAI Regional or State Office and request reactivation under UIDAI’s applicable circular. The office may call the person for full biometric submission at a designated Aadhaar centre.
This process is for the living holder, not for a relative trying to reactivate a deceased person’s number. Do not submit a reactivation request unless the Aadhaar holder is alive and can complete UIDAI’s identity and biometric requirements.
Common situations and the correct response
The family has a death certificate but has never checked Aadhaar
Run Verify Aadhaar Number first. If the result is inactive or unclear, contact UIDAI for the reason. If no death report has been submitted and the myAadhaar service supports the death-registration jurisdiction, an authenticated family member can submit the report with the required certificate and registration details.
The family submitted the report but the number still verifies as active
A submission triggers UIDAI’s validation; it does not instantly confirm deactivation. Keep the acknowledgement, allow the process to be handled through official channels, and ask UIDAI at 1947 for the status if the result remains unexpected.

The result is inactive but the family needs to know whether death caused it
The public verifier does not establish that reason. Contact UIDAI and provide the verification date, the exact response, the death certificate, and the Death Registration Number if requested.
The verifier rejects the number
Check the digits against the original record and retry on UIDAI’s official service. If the number is still rejected or the wording is ambiguous, treat it as an unresolved status and contact UIDAI rather than guessing that the person’s Aadhaar was deactivated.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A website or person asks for payment to reveal the status
Do not pay or disclose the Aadhaar number to an unofficial service. UIDAI’s official verification and support channels are the appropriate route for this question. A card reader, biometric device, certificate supply, or third-party “status” product cannot establish the current UIDAI record.
The family needs proof for a bank or pension office
Ask the institution what documents it accepts. A UIDAI verification result may answer the Aadhaar-status question, but it is not automatically a death certificate, succession document or authority to close an account. Provide the death certificate and other documents required by that institution, and share Aadhaar information only through its secure, approved process.

Deactivation is an Aadhaar-record action; it is not a substitute for notifying banks, insurers, pension authorities, tax departments, telecom providers, or the civil-registration office. Each organisation may require its own death certificate, account procedure, nominee proof, or legal documentation. Use UIDAI’s response only for the Aadhaar question and complete those separate notifications directly with the relevant institution.
UIDAI reported that more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers had been deactivated by 26 November 2025, according to a UIDAI/MeitY government release. A later UIDAI/MeitY release dated 4 February 2026 reported more than 2.5 crore deactivations. These are nationwide cumulative figures, not a way to infer the status of one family member. They show the scale of the programme but cannot replace an individual verification.

A practical decision checklist
- Need a live status: Use UIDAI’s Verify Aadhaar Number service with the correct 12-digit number.
- Result says inactive or deactivated: Contact UIDAI at 1947, through its official email, or at a Regional Office to learn the reason.
- Result is unclear or the service fails: Record the exact message, verify the digits, retry through UIDAI, and seek support.
- Death not yet reported: Obtain the death certificate, then use myAadhaar’s Reporting of Death of a Family Member service if the death-registration jurisdiction is supported.
- Death report submitted: Remember that submission is not confirmation; use the acknowledgement and ask UIDAI for the outcome.
- Living person wrongly marked deceased: The Aadhaar holder should contact a UIDAI Regional or State Office for the reactivation route and any required full biometric submission.
- Any privacy concern: Use only official UIDAI channels and never post the full Aadhaar number publicly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see a “deceased” label online?
UIDAI’s public material does not promise a special deceased label. Verify the number, then contact UIDAI at 1947 or through an official Regional Office if the response is inactive or unclear.
Does an inactive result prove that the person’s death was reported?
No. It proves only that the number did not return an active verification result at that time. UIDAI must explain the reason.
How do I report the death if it has not been reported?
Obtain the death certificate, sign in to myAadhaar, and use Reporting of Death of a Family Member if the death-registration jurisdiction is supported. Provide the Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and requested demographic details.
Recommended Free Tools
Is submitting the myAadhaar form the same as deactivation?
No. UIDAI validates the information against the death registrar’s and Aadhaar databases before taking action. Submission is not confirmation of deactivation.
What if my state or union territory is not supported?
Do not select a different jurisdiction or alter registration details. Ask UIDAI at 1947 and the death-registering authority how to proceed.
Can a living person reverse an incorrect deceased status?
Yes. The living Aadhaar holder should approach a UIDAI Regional or State Office for the reactivation route. The office may require full biometric submission at a designated centre.
Can an old Aadhaar card prove the number is still active?
No. A card or downloaded e-Aadhaar shows that the number was issued, not its current status. Use UIDAI’s live verifier.
Will UIDAI give the reason to any relative who calls?
UIDAI may require authentication and proof of relationship and may limit information for privacy. Follow the support team’s instructions and disclose documents only through official channels.
The Bottom Line
Check the deceased person’s 12-digit number only through UIDAI’s Verify Aadhaar Number service. If it is inactive, unclear or the service fails, call 1947, use UIDAI’s published official email, or visit a Regional Office; the public result does not establish the reason. If the death has not been reported, use myAadhaar’s reporting service where the death-registration jurisdiction is supported, remembering that submission is not confirmation. Keep the death certificate and Death Registration Number ready, protect the Aadhaar number, and handle bank, pension and estate notifications separately.
