Check the named transaction-signing algorithm, confirm that the exact blockchain account type can verify it, and establish that the verifier is deployed on the network you actually use. A protected vault, encrypted backup, or secure element may improve custody security while the blockchain transaction still uses a quantum-vulnerable signature.
What “post-quantum” means for a crypto wallet
A cryptocurrency wallet performs several different security jobs. It may generate and store private keys, encrypt a local vault, protect a recovery phrase, authenticate a user, and sign transactions. Post-quantum security in this context concerns the last job: the digital signature that the blockchain accepts as authorization to spend or move assets.

The distinction matters because a wallet can use strong device isolation and still create a transaction with an algorithm that a sufficiently capable quantum computer could attack. Conversely, a wallet may advertise a post-quantum primitive for encrypted communication or key exchange without using a post-quantum signature for blockchain transactions.
The network’s transaction rules are the final authority. A wallet cannot make a chain post-quantum by itself. The protocol, smart-account contract, or validator used by the account must know how to verify the signature and must be deployed on the relevant network.

The fastest reliable check
Use this sequence for the exact wallet, chain, account mode, and software version you intend to use. Do not generalize from one network or account type to another.
- Identify the network and account type. Record the chain name, mainnet or testnet, account model, and wallet or firmware version. “Supports post-quantum security” is incomplete without this scope.
- Find the signing algorithm. In the wallet’s technical documentation, look for the algorithm that signs the transaction itself. A credible claim names a scheme and standard, such as ML-DSA (FIPS 204) or SLH-DSA (FIPS 205).
- Separate signatures from other cryptography. If the documentation mentions ML-KEM (FIPS 203), determine whether it is used for key establishment, encrypted backups, messaging, or another operation. ML-KEM alone does not prove that transactions use post-quantum signatures.
- Check the chain-side verifier. Confirm whether the base protocol or the smart-account validator accepts the named signature. A wallet implementation without a deployed verifier cannot authorize a normal transaction on that chain.
- Establish deployment status. Classify the feature as live on mainnet, available only on a testnet, experimental or beta, or merely planned. A roadmap item is not production support.
- Check account and asset coverage. Verify which account types and assets use the post-quantum path. A wallet can support one smart-account format while its ordinary accounts remain on conventional signatures.
- Look for version-specific evidence. Read release notes, protocol documentation, and validator addresses or deployment records for the version you will run. A future upgrade or a different chain does not change the capability of your current setup.
- Record the evidence. Save the documentation date, software version, algorithm, verifier location, network, and deployment state. This makes later upgrades or changed claims detectable.
Recognize the algorithms that matter
The first three United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) post-quantum cryptography standards were finalized in August 2024. They do not all perform the same function.
| Standard | Primitive | What it does | What it proves about a wallet transaction |
|---|---|---|---|
| FIPS 203 | ML-KEM | Key encapsulation for establishing shared secrets | Nothing by itself about transaction signatures |
| FIPS 204 | ML-DSA | Digital signatures | Relevant only if it signs the transaction and the chain verifies it |
| FIPS 205 | SLH-DSA | Digital signatures | Relevant only if it signs the transaction and the chain verifies it |
A phrase such as “uses NIST-approved PQC” is too vague to evaluate. Ask which FIPS standard is used, where it is used, and which exact operation it protects. NIST standardization also does not certify that a particular wallet implementation is correct, audited, or accepted by a blockchain.
Algorithm names can include parameter sets. For example, a vendor may specify ML-DSA-44 or ML-DSA-65. Capture the complete name rather than shortening it to “ML-DSA,” because parameter choices affect key and signature sizes, performance, and compatibility. The parameter name still does not establish support unless the chain’s verifier uses the same scheme and encoding.
Confirm that the blockchain can verify the signature
A wallet signs data; the network decides whether that signature authorizes a state change. There are two common ways a post-quantum signature can be accepted:
- Protocol-level support: the chain’s native transaction rules and validators recognize the signature type.
- Smart-account support: a contract or account abstraction validator checks the post-quantum signature before executing the transaction.
Ask for the exact verifier, not merely a wallet-side library. Documentation should identify the protocol feature, smart-account validator, precompile, or deployed contract that performs verification. If a project supplies only a test harness, a local demo, or source code with no network deployment, treat the capability as experimental.
The account model is equally important. A conventional externally owned account may continue to use its chain’s established elliptic-curve signature even when the same wallet can create a post-quantum smart account. Assets held by the conventional account do not inherit the smart account’s protection automatically; they must be moved under the supported account model.

Ethereum: why the account type changes the answer
Ethereum.org’s “Post-quantum cryptography on Ethereum” page, updated September 8, 2026, states that standard externally owned accounts use ECDSA on the secp256k1 curve to sign transactions. That is the signature model readers should expect from an ordinary Ethereum account unless the account has been deliberately migrated to another mechanism.
The page also explains an exposure difference: once an account sends a transaction, its public key is revealed onchain; an account that has never been used exposes only an address hash. This affects when a public key becomes visible, but it does not turn an unused account into a post-quantum account.
Ethereum’s published roadmap describes planned infrastructure including a post-quantum key registry, signature-verification precompiles, post-quantum attestations, and later work on signature aggregation and blob commitments. The roadmap places core infrastructure around an approximate 2029 target and extends broader execution-layer and ecosystem migration beyond that. Ethereum.org explicitly warns that milestone names, order, and timing are plans rather than guaranteed commitments.
Therefore, an Ethereum wallet page saying “quantum-ready” is not enough. Verify whether your account type uses a deployed verifier on the network you will transact on. Do not infer mainnet support from a roadmap, a conference demonstration, or a testnet experiment.
How to evaluate a wallet’s documentation
Look for an implementation statement
Useful documentation says which code path signs a transaction, what data is signed, which parameter set is used, and how the resulting signature is encoded. Vague language about “quantum resistance,” “future-proof keys,” or “military-grade encryption” does not answer those questions.
Find the chain integration
The wallet should name the supported chain and account format, then identify the corresponding verifier. Check whether the integration is native protocol support or an ERC-4337-style smart-account validator. A wallet can support a post-quantum account on one chain while using ordinary accounts on another.
Check status labels carefully
Classify each claim using the strongest status the documentation actually supports:

Check dates and versions
Cryptographic support can change with a wallet release, firmware update, contract upgrade, or chain fork. Record the documentation’s publication or update date and the exact software version. If the page does not state a version, ask the vendor which release contains the claimed implementation.
A documented example: Quantum Wallet
Quantum Wallet’s technical documentation describes a self-custodial wallet using ML-DSA signatures with ERC-4337 smart accounts. It specifies ML-DSA-44 for wallet-side signing and ML-DSA-65 for an onchain verifier, and identifies both as NIST-standardized schemes.
Its chain table labels Arbitrum as “MVP” with “mainnet target: Sepolia today,” and lists Quantum L1 as “MVP.” Those labels describe the vendor’s stated development status; they should not be rewritten as general Ethereum-mainnet support. In particular, “Sepolia today” identifies a testnet deployment, not production Ethereum mainnet.
The same documentation describes a BIP-39 recovery mnemonic and a browser-local encrypted vault. Those features concern recovery and custody. They do not independently prove that a transaction is signed with ML-DSA or that a chain verifier is deployed.
Use this example as a model for the questions to ask: Which algorithm signs? Which component verifies? On which chain and account type? Is the feature mainnet, testnet, or planned? The documentation is a vendor statement, not independent validation. Confirm current implementation details and deployment status before committing funds.

Why a hardware wallet label does not answer the question
A hardware wallet can isolate private-key operations, resist malware, and require physical confirmation. Those are valuable controls against theft and unauthorized local signing. They do not determine the signature algorithm accepted by a blockchain.
The same warning applies to secure elements, encrypted backups, recovery plates, passphrases, and biometric unlock. Each may reduce a different risk. None demonstrates post-quantum transaction security unless the wallet uses a named post-quantum signature and the network verifies it.

Ask hardware-wallet vendors the same transaction-specific questions as software-wallet vendors: What signs the transaction? Which standard and parameter set are used? Which chains and account types support it? Is the verifier deployed? If the answer discusses only firmware encryption or transport security, the post-quantum transaction question remains unanswered.

How urgent is the threat?
NIST says the arrival date of a quantum computer capable of threatening current cryptography is unknown. Expert estimates range from a few years to a few decades. NIST also notes that integrating newly standardized algorithms into information systems can take 10 to 20 years, which is why organizations are encouraged to begin migration planning now.
NIST’s transition timeline targets 2035 for deprecating and ultimately removing quantum-vulnerable algorithms from its standards, with high-risk systems moving earlier. That is a standards-transition target, not a prediction that a crypto attack will become practical in 2035.
Ethereum.org states that no quantum computer today can break Ethereum’s cryptography and says users do not need to take action now, while describing preparation for future migration. The practical response is measured verification: understand your account type, monitor deployed protocol support, and avoid panic purchases based on an unsupported deadline.

Common ambiguous claims and how to resolve them
“The wallet is quantum-ready.”
Request the algorithm, standard, signing operation, supported chain, account type, verifier, and deployment status. Without all six, treat the phrase as marketing rather than a technical conclusion.
“It uses NIST cryptography.”
Ask whether the reference is to ML-DSA, SLH-DSA, or ML-KEM. Then ask where that primitive is used. NIST recognition does not establish that the wallet has implemented it correctly or that a blockchain accepts it.
“The feature is on the roadmap.”
Record it as planned. A roadmap can change, and Ethereum.org explicitly says its milestone order and names are not guaranteed commitments.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“It works on a testnet.”
Note the exact testnet and account format, then look for a production deployment. Testnet success is useful evidence of development but does not establish mainnet availability or suitability for valuable assets.
“The hardware protects the key from quantum attacks.”
Ask whether the claim concerns the hardware’s storage and execution environment or the blockchain signature. Only the latter answers whether a quantum-capable attacker could target the transaction authorization scheme.
“The wallet supports every chain.”
Reject the generalization. Signature support is chain-specific. Verify each network and account mode independently, including assets held through smart contracts.
A record you can keep for each wallet
Before relying on a post-quantum claim, complete a short evidence record:
- Wallet name and exact application, firmware, or extension version.
- Chain, network environment, account type, and asset standard.
- Named transaction-signing algorithm and complete parameter set.
- Applicable standard, such as FIPS 204 or FIPS 205.
- Component that verifies the signature and its deployed address or protocol feature, if documented.
- Status: mainnet, testnet, experimental, or planned.
- Recovery method and upgrade or migration procedure.
- Date and title of the documentation you checked.
- Any independent security review, with its scope and date.
If any transaction-critical field is missing, describe the wallet as “not established” for post-quantum transaction support rather than “quantum safe.” That wording accurately reflects the evidence without claiming that the wallet is insecure in every other respect.
