You cannot establish exposure from a version label or an empty advisory page alone. Record the exact Core Lightning build that is running, identify whether it came from a release binary, Docker image, or source checkout, compare its operating dates with the official release notes, and verify any replacement artifact before upgrading. Core Lightning’s release page identifies v26.06.9, published on 2026-10-07, as containing vulnerability fixes and says operators should upgrade as soon as practical.
The official notes do not publish a vulnerability-by-vulnerability affected-version matrix. Therefore, this process can classify a node as needing urgent review or upgrade; it cannot prove that a particular node was compromised or was definitely safe without issue-level details and deployment history.

Start with the four facts that determine your answer
Forensic confidence depends on facts about your own node, not just on the current release number. Write down these items before changing anything:
Recommended Free Tools
- Running version: the exact Core Lightning version returned by the live daemon, including a development or distribution-specific suffix if one appears.
- Deployment type: a precompiled release binary, a Docker image, or a build made from source.
- Artifact identity: the binary checksum, source commit, or Docker image digest that actually ran. A Docker tag is only a movable label.
- Operating timeline: when that artifact was installed, when the node was online, and when it was replaced.
Keep copies of command output, package records, image metadata, configuration changes, and relevant logs. Those records let you compare your node with a later issue-specific notice if the project publishes one.

How to check which Core Lightning version is running
Use the live RPC response first
The daemon’s own RPC response is the best starting point because it describes the process currently serving your node. On a host with the standard command-line client, run lightning-cli getinfo and save the complete output. Locate the version field rather than relying on a dashboard heading or a package name. If your installation uses a network, socket, or authentication option, supply the same connection options you normally use for administrative RPC calls.
Run the command against the production daemon, not a spare data directory or an image that is stopped. If the command fails, record the error and use the deployment-specific checks below; do not infer the version from a failed client connection.
Precompiled binary installations
Record the path and checksum of the executable that launched the daemon. A package manager, service unit, or launch script may point to a different binary than the one you inspect interactively. Check the service definition and process command line, then capture the binary’s reported version where supported, for example lightningd --version. Preserve the package version and repository metadata as well as the file hash, because a locally rebuilt binary can carry a familiar version string.

Follow the route that matches your host instead of mixing files from different installation methods.
Docker deployments
Record both the configured image reference and the immutable digest used by the running container. Commands such as docker ps --no-trunc, docker inspect your-container, and docker image inspect image:tag can expose the image ID and repository digests; save their output with the container creation time. If the image was pulled through an orchestration system, capture the resolved digest from that system as well.

Do not treat a displayed version label as proof of the bits that ran. Earlier Core Lightning releases included operator notes about image tag and digest discrepancies, so compare the digest with the official release information whenever it is available. Also record the host architecture and the exact tag, because multi-architecture images can resolve to different manifests.
Source builds
For a source checkout, save the output of the daemon’s version query, the Git commit used to build it, the repository remote, and the build date. A release number alone does not identify a development build. If the checkout is still available, record git rev-parse HEAD and any local modifications, then archive the build configuration and compiler package information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the official release and advisory pages
Read release notes, including intervening point releases
Open the official releases list at https://github.com/ElementsProject/lightning/releases?after=v0.8.2rc3. Read the latest release and every point release after the version your node ran. Security fixes may be described in ordinary release notes rather than in a separate advisory entry.
The current release identified in the official notes is v26.06.9, dated 2026-10-07. Its note says, “We strongly encourage everyone to upgrade to 26.06.9 as soon as practical.” The note describes fixes for vulnerabilities and hardening changes, so an operator running an earlier release should schedule an upgrade and investigate the period during which that release was active.
Check GitHub Security Advisories, but do not use a blank page as a clearance
Check the project’s advisory index at https://github.com/ElementsProject/lightning/security/advisories. At the time represented by the current release information, no published advisory entries were shown. That means only that no public entry was listed there; it does not establish that an older node was unaffected. A maintainer can disclose a fix through release notes without publishing a separate advisory, and a privately reported issue may not yet have a public record.

What v26.06.9 says was fixed
The release note names several functional areas. These descriptions are screening clues, not a substitute for an affected-version table:
| Area named in the release note | What to review on your node | What the note does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Channel reestablishment | Whether the node maintained channels through reestablishment events while an earlier release was running. | It does not state every affected version or prove that an individual channel was exploited. |
| Splicing | Whether splice-capable channels or related workflows were enabled during the relevant period. | It does not provide a complete exposure window. |
| HTLC handling during shutdown | Shutdown events, pending HTLCs, and logs from the earlier daemon. | It does not identify a transaction or peer as compromised. |
| Onion handling | Routing activity and errors involving onion messages while the older build was online. | It does not publish a per-version exploitability statement. |
onchaind |
On-chain resolution processes and their logs. | It does not say that every on-chain event was vulnerable. |
| Gossip range queries | Whether the node accepted or served the relevant gossip requests. | It does not quantify remote exposure or affected peers. |
Runes and setconfig |
Administrative access, rune issuance, and configuration-change logs. | It does not show that an unauthorized caller obtained a valid rune. |
| Remote-crash and other hardening fixes | Daemon restarts, crashes, watchdog events, and unusual resource use. | A crash or absence of a crash is not proof of exploitation status. |
Use the areas to decide which logs and operational records to preserve. Do not convert a release-note heading into a claim that your node was attacked.
Classify your node by version and dates
Build a simple timeline matching each artifact to the dates it served traffic. Then apply the following decision framework:
| Observed situation | Practical interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The node already runs v26.06.9 or a later release, installed from a verified artifact. | The node includes the fixes described for v26.06.9, but this is not a historical proof that an earlier build was never exposed. | Keep the artifact record, check later release notes, and review the period before the upgrade if the node previously ran an older version. |
| The node runs an earlier 26.06 release. | Because v26.06.9 contains vulnerability fixes, the earlier build requires review; the available notes do not say exactly which point releases are affected. | Upgrade as soon as practical and preserve the old version, digest, dates, and logs before rotating evidence. |
| The node runs a development build, a locally patched build, or an unknown binary. | A release number may not map cleanly to the fixes, and provenance is uncertain. | Identify the source commit or binary hash, compare the commit with official release history, and move to a verified supported release. |
| The node runs in Docker but only the tag is known. | The exact bits are not established because tags can move and image manifests can differ by architecture. | Recover the running container’s immutable digest and image ID, then compare them with the release artifact information. |
| The node was offline before the relevant release and never ran an affected build. | That reduces the plausible exposure window, but only your complete deployment history can support the conclusion. | Document the dates and artifacts rather than deleting the old records. |
There is no comprehensive vulnerability-by-vulnerability affected-version matrix in the cited release information. If your decision requires a definitive yes-or-no answer, you need an issue-specific maintainer statement that identifies affected versions and compares it with your recorded build.

Plan an upgrade without damaging channel or database state
The project recommends upgrading to v26.06.9 as soon as practical. Treat this as a controlled production change rather than an unverified file replacement.
- Freeze the evidence. Save the live version output, image digest or binary hash, source commit, service configuration, operating dates, and relevant logs. Note the current channel and wallet state using your normal operational procedures.
- Read the deployment guidance. Use the installation and operation documentation in the official repository at https://github.com/elementsproject/lightning. Follow the instructions for your binary, Docker, or source-build route.
- Check compatibility and recovery plans. Confirm that backups are current, that you know where the Core Lightning data directory is, and that you have a tested way to restore service. Coordinate with channel peers if your maintenance procedure requires a temporary disconnect.
- Obtain the intended release artifact. Download the release binary or image from the project’s official release information, and retain the original files for verification.
- Verify authenticity before stopping production. Validate the signed checksum manifest and then the artifact hash as described in the next section.
- Stop and replace using your normal service method. Do not copy a binary over a running process or point a container at a different data directory by accident.
- Start the node and verify it. Run
lightning-cli getinfo, check the version, inspect logs for startup or migration errors, and confirm that expected channels and plugins are present. - Monitor after restart. Watch peer connections, payments, on-chain resolution, resource use, and repeated crashes. Keep the old artifact and pre-upgrade logs until the review is complete.
Important downgrade restriction for development builds
The v26.06.9 release information warns that a node which has run a development master build cannot be downgraded to a 26.06.x release because the database schema is newer. Do not experiment with a development build on a production data directory and assume that a later downgrade will be safe. If this condition applies, stop and follow the project’s documented recovery path; do not delete or recreate the database to force a startup.
Verify that the replacement artifact is genuine
A successful download is not an authenticity check. The release page instructs operators to verify the signed checksum manifest with GPG and then check the downloaded file hashes with sha256sum -c. The exact manifest filename varies by release and architecture, so use the filename shown on the official release page rather than guessing one.
- Download the release artifact, its signed checksum manifest, and the corresponding signature file from the official release entry.
- Import or otherwise make available the maintainer release-signing keys listed in the project security policy: https://github.com/ElementsProject/lightning/security.
- Use GPG to verify the signature against the checksum manifest. Confirm that GPG reports a valid signature from a key you recognize from that policy.
- Run
sha256sum -cagainst the verified manifest, from the directory containing the downloaded artifact. Every required file should report an expected match. - For Docker, compare the resolved image digest with the digest or manifest identified by the release information, and record the architecture-specific result.
If signature verification fails, the signing key is unknown, or the hash does not match, do not install the artifact. Download it again through the official release route and investigate the discrepancy. A version string on an unverified file is not evidence that it is an official build.

If you suspect exposure or compromise
Preserve facts before rotating credentials, pruning containers, or deleting logs. Create a case record containing:
Best Value
- Exact Core Lightning version and the RPC output that reported it.
- Binary checksum, package provenance, source commit, or Docker image digest.
- Host architecture, operating-system details, and service or orchestration configuration.
- Dates and times when each artifact was installed and the node was reachable.
- Daemon, plugin, system, firewall, and container logs covering the suspected period.
- Channel, payment, on-chain, rune, and configuration-change events relevant to the affected area named in the release notes.
- Actions already taken, including restarts, upgrades, credential changes, or channel closures.
The security policy directs vulnerability reports to [email protected]. That address is for vulnerability reporting, not ordinary support requests. Include the preserved technical facts, avoid publishing sensitive credentials, and explain whether you are reporting a suspected new issue or asking about an issue already described in a release.
Understand what the official pages can and cannot tell you
The project’s security policy says Core Lightning follows a three-month release cycle and supports the last two versions. The supported set changes as new releases appear, so confirm the currently supported versions on the policy and release pages when you perform the check. A node outside that support window deserves additional urgency because it may not receive fixes in an old branch.
The release page and advisory index are authoritative places to look, but they answer different questions. Release notes tell you what maintainers changed in a particular version; the advisory index lists public security advisories. Neither page, by itself, records your node’s deployment history, proves that a remote party reached it, or establishes that funds or channels were affected.
For a defensible conclusion, preserve the exact artifact identity and dates, compare them with issue-specific affected-version information when it becomes available, and distinguish three statements: the node ran a version containing a fix; the node may have been exposed while running an earlier version; and the node was actually exploited. The first can often be demonstrated from your records, the second may be a reasonable risk classification, and the third requires evidence beyond a release number.
Quick Recap
A repeatable review checklist
- Run
lightning-cli getinfoon the live daemon and save the output. - Identify binary, Docker, or source deployment and capture immutable artifact identity.
- Record host architecture and the dates each artifact was online.
- Read the latest release and all intervening point-release notes at https://github.com/ElementsProject/lightning/releases?after=v0.8.2rc3.
- Check the advisory index at https://github.com/ElementsProject/lightning/security/advisories, recording the date of the check.
- Use the v26.06.9 affected-area descriptions as a log-review guide, not as a claim that a specific node was attacked.
- Upgrade to v26.06.9 or a later supported release after reviewing channel, database, and recovery procedures.
- Verify the signed checksum manifest with GPG and validate hashes with
sha256sum -c. - After the restart, verify the live version, channels, plugins, logs, and resource behavior.
- If exposure remains plausible, retain evidence and contact [email protected] with a factual timeline.
