Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: symptoms such as sudden slowness, crashes, redirects, unexplained pop-ups, changed browser settings, or disabled security tools are reasons to investigate, not proof of an infection. Hardware and ordinary software faults can produce the same behavior. On Windows, update Microsoft Defender’s protection data and run a Full scan; use Microsoft Defender Offline if malware keeps returning or may be hiding while Windows is running. On a Mac, update and restart macOS, then inspect unfamiliar applications and Safari extensions when persistent pop-ups suggest adware or other unwanted software.
What counts as a warning sign—and what does not
Malware rarely announces itself with one definitive symptom. Microsoft lists unusual slowness, frequent crashes or freezes, an inability to start a virus scanner or other system tools, blocked access to security-related webpages, an unexpectedly changed browser homepage, and constant unexpected pop-ups as possible signs. Its scan guidance also mentions sudden performance loss, shorter battery life, increased data use, unexpected advertisements, and redirects to unrelated websites.

Those clues justify a structured check, but they do not establish a diagnosis. A failing drive, a buggy update, an overloaded startup list, a damaged browser profile, or another software conflict can look similar. Treat the behavior as a prompt to verify the system rather than as evidence that malware is certainly present.
| Observed behavior | Why it deserves attention | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Sudden slowness or reduced battery life | An unwanted process may be using CPU, storage, network, or power, but ordinary software and hardware problems can do the same. | Run the operating system’s built-in security scan and note whether the change began after an update, installation, or hardware warning. |
| Frequent crashes or freezes | Malware can destabilize a system; drivers, memory, storage, and incompatible software can also cause crashes. | Check whether security tools run normally, then perform the recommended deeper scan. |
| Unexpected pop-ups or advertisements | Persistent pop-ups can indicate adware or unwanted software. A deceptive pop-up can also be a phishing attempt rather than an installed infection. | Do not click its links or fake close buttons. Follow the Windows or Mac checks below. |
| Redirects or a changed homepage | Browser settings may have been altered, although an extension, account setting, or ordinary browser fault is also possible. | Inspect installed extensions and run a malware scan instead of trusting the page that appeared. |
| Security tools or security webpages will not open | Interference with security software or websites is a serious clue, but a damaged installation or network problem can produce the same result. | Use the operating system’s built-in scan and escalate to an offline scan if the problem persists. |
| Unexpected data use | Unwanted software may communicate over the network, but cloud sync, updates, streaming, or another legitimate program can also increase usage. | Compare the timing with normal activity and scan before assuming an infection. |
No single item in the table proves that a computer is infected. The useful question is whether the built-in security checks find a threat and whether the behavior continues after those checks.

Before you investigate
- Do not interact with suspicious alerts. A web page may imitate a security company and ask for payment, a password, or remote access. Do not use its links, telephone numbers, download buttons, or supposed “close” controls if the window looks deceptive.
- Save open work before a deep scan. A Microsoft Defender Offline scan restarts the computer and runs outside Windows.
- Record what changed. Note when the behavior began, which account was in use, which browser showed it, and whether the problem affects one user or the whole computer. This helps separate a system-wide problem from a browser-specific one.
- Use the operating system’s own security controls first. The Windows and macOS procedures below are the supported checks described by Microsoft and Apple; a third-party “cleaner” is not required to follow them.
How to check a Windows PC
Windows includes Microsoft Defender through the Windows Security app. When infection is suspected, Microsoft recommends a Full scan rather than treating a Quick scan as conclusive. Update the protection data first so the scanner has current information with which to identify threats.
1. Open the built-in protection page
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu or Windows search.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Use the protection or security-intelligence update control shown on that page to check for current definitions before scanning. Current protection data improves detection.
2. Understand the three scan choices
| Scan | Where it looks | When to choose it | Restart required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick scan | Places where malware is most likely to hide. | A fast initial check or a routine check when there is no particular reason to suspect a broad infection. | No. |
| Full scan | Across the PC rather than only the most likely locations. | The recommended choice when you think the computer is infected. | No, although the scan can slow the PC while it runs. |
| Microsoft Defender Offline | Runs outside the normal Windows environment, before ordinary Windows activity can conceal or interfere with some malware. | When the same threat returns, Windows-based scans do not resolve the concern, or malware may be hiding while Windows is running. | Yes. Windows restarts the computer. |
The Quick scan is not a clearance certificate. It checks likely hiding places, not every location on the PC. A Full scan covers the computer more broadly and is the appropriate next step when the symptoms make you suspect infection.
3. Run a Full scan
- On Virus & threat protection, select Scan options (the wording can vary slightly by Windows release).
- Choose Full scan.
- Start the scan and let it complete. Keep in mind that a broad scan may make the computer feel slower while it is working.
- Review the result in Windows Security. A detected item should show the action Windows recommends, such as cleaning, removing, or quarantining it.
4. Handle a detected file carefully
Use the cleanup, removal, or quarantine action offered by Windows Security. Do not choose an “allow” option merely to make an alert disappear. Microsoft’s guidance is to allow a file only when you trust both the file and its publisher; allowing it prevents further alerts for that file. If you do not recognize it or cannot verify its source, leave it blocked or quarantined and follow the action Windows recommends.

5. Escalate to Defender Offline when needed
If the same malware returns, or you suspect it is hiding while Windows is active, return to the scan options and choose Microsoft Defender Offline. Save documents first: the tool restarts the PC and performs the check outside Windows. After the restart and scan, open Windows Security again to review the result and any remediation action.
An apparently clean result lowers concern, but it does not prove that every possible problem has been ruled out. If the original behavior continues, check for a non-malware cause as well as repeating the deeper security workflow recommended for the situation.
How to investigate a Mac when pop-ups suggest adware
Apple’s guidance focuses on persistent pop-ups and other signs of adware or unwanted software. A single advertisement does not establish an infection. Persistent pop-ups, especially ones that impersonate a trusted company or demand personal or financial information, deserve caution.

1. Ignore the suspicious pop-up
Do not enter a password, payment detail, or other personal information. Avoid links and buttons inside the alert, including a fake close button that may open another page or download. Close the browser window using the normal macOS controls if possible. The appearance of a warning on a webpage is not evidence that the company named in it actually detected anything on the Mac.
2. Update macOS
Install available macOS updates through the normal system software-update controls. Keeping macOS current is Apple’s first supported check for suspected adware or other unwanted software.
3. Restart the Mac
If macOS is already current, restart it. Apple states that “macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when restarting.” This is a specific protection for known malware; it is not a promise that every unwanted program or every cause of a pop-up will be removed.

4. Inspect Applications
Open the Applications folder and look for software you do not recognize or do not remember installing. Consider when each unfamiliar app appeared and whether it matches the start of the pop-ups. Do not delete a system component simply because its name is unfamiliar; verify what it is before removing anything.
5. Review Safari extensions
Open Safari’s settings (called Preferences on some older macOS releases) and select Extensions. Disable or uninstall extensions you do not need or do not recognize. Test Safari again after the change. This check targets browser-level causes of persistent advertising and redirects; it is not a universal manual scan of every file on a Mac.

How to tell a scan result from a diagnosis
A warning sign and a scan result answer different questions. Symptoms tell you that something changed. A scan tells you whether the security tool identified a known threat in the locations and conditions it examined.
Best Value
- A detection is actionable evidence. Follow the operating system’s cleanup, removal, or quarantine guidance, and do not allow the file unless you trust it and its publisher.
- A clean Quick scan is limited evidence. It checks likely hiding places, so use a Full scan when infection is suspected.
- A clean Full scan reduces concern but is not an absolute guarantee. If the behavior remains, continue troubleshooting instead of declaring the computer definitely clean.
- An offline scan addresses persistence. Defender Offline is designed for cases in which malware may be concealed while Windows is running or keeps returning after normal remediation.
- Mac checks have a defined scope. Updating or restarting macOS, checking Applications, and reviewing Safari extensions are Apple’s recommended steps for the persistent-pop-up/adware scenario described here.
If the problem continues after the built-in checks
Windows still behaves strangely after a clean result
Run the Full scan if you initially ran only Quick scan. If the concern persists or a threat reappears, use Defender Offline and review the result after the restart. Then investigate ordinary software and hardware explanations: identify whether one application, browser, or account triggers the behavior, and check whether the change began with an update or installation. Microsoft explicitly notes that the same symptoms can come from hardware or software issues unrelated to malware.
The browser alone shows redirects or pop-ups
Do not treat the page’s warning as a trusted diagnosis. Close it without clicking its controls, then review browser extensions and homepage settings. On a Mac, Apple specifically directs users with persistent pop-ups to inspect Safari extensions and unfamiliar applications. On Windows, keep the browser investigation separate from the system scan so a browser problem is not mistaken for a clean bill of health for the entire PC.
Security tools will not start
An inability to start a virus scanner or open security-related webpages is itself a warning sign, but it can also result from software damage or connectivity problems. Try the built-in Windows Security workflow again after updating protection data. If a normal scan cannot resolve the concern, Defender Offline is the appropriate escalation because it runs outside the active Windows session.
Recommended Free Tools
A pop-up asks for money or personal information
Handle it as a potential phishing attempt, regardless of whether malware is installed. Do not call a number displayed in the alert, download a tool it recommends, or provide credentials. Use the computer’s normal security settings and support channels instead of the pop-up’s instructions.
A practical decision path
- Notice a change: record the symptom and when it began; do not diagnose from the appearance alone.
- Reject deceptive instructions: ignore suspicious pop-ups, links, downloads, and requests for personal or financial information.
- Choose the platform workflow: Windows Security for a Windows PC; macOS updates, restart, Applications, and Safari Extensions for the Mac adware scenario.
- Use the right depth: on Windows, update protection data and run Full scan when infection is suspected; choose Defender Offline when malware persists or may be hiding.
- Act on findings: clean, remove, or quarantine detections; allow a file only when its publisher and contents are trusted.
- Reassess unresolved behavior: a clean result lowers concern but does not prove that every cause has been eliminated, so investigate hardware, software, browser, and network explanations when symptoms remain.
Key takeaways
Checking for malware is a verification process, not a visual diagnosis. Slowness, crashes, pop-ups, redirects, changed browser settings, increased data use, or disabled security tools can justify a scan while still having non-malware causes. Windows users should update protection data and use a Full scan when infection is suspected, escalating to Defender Offline for persistent or concealed threats. Mac users facing persistent pop-ups should avoid the pop-up, update and restart macOS, inspect unfamiliar applications, and review Safari extensions. In every case, treat a clean result as useful evidence—not as proof that no problem exists—and never trust a webpage’s demand for money, credentials, or a download merely because it looks like a security warning.
