Verify the employer and the specific vacancy through a company website you locate independently, then verify the recruiter through contact details you obtain from that employer. Do not pay to get hired, forward money from a check, or share identity and bank information until those checks and a plausible hiring process are complete. No single clue—including a company-looking email domain, logo, or polished offer letter—proves a job is genuine.
The reliable order of checks
A suspicious job offer should be treated as an unverified claim, not as an opportunity that you must disprove. Work from evidence you find independently. The safest sequence is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Locate the employer’s website without using the recruiter’s link.
- Find the careers or jobs section and match the exact vacancy.
- Verify the recruiter through contact information published by the employer.
- Assess whether the interview and offer process is plausible, without treating any one sign as decisive.
- Refuse payments, check-forwarding arrangements, and premature requests for sensitive information.
- Search for complaints as leads and report suspected fraud to the appropriate authority.
This sequence matters because a scammer can copy a real company’s name, job description, logo, offer letter, or even an advertisement from a legitimate employment platform. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes hijacked and altered job advertisements on employment and career sites. Finding a familiar-looking listing is therefore not the same as confirming that the employer authorized it.

Start with a known route
Type a company domain you already know, use a trusted directory or business record, or navigate from an established source. Do not begin by clicking the link in an unexpected recruiting email, text, or direct message. A look-alike domain can differ by a small spelling change, extra word, unfamiliar top-level domain, or substituted character.

Once you reach the site, use its own navigation to find “Careers,” “Jobs,” “Work with us,” or a similar section. If the link supplied by the recruiter opens a page that you cannot reach from the independently located site, stop and treat the vacancy as unverified. A page that looks professional is not enough; the question is whether the employer’s own site publishes and supports it.
Check the site’s identity, not just its appearance
- Read the domain character by character, especially the part immediately before the top-level domain.
- Open the company’s contact or “About” page from the same independently located site.
- Use a phone number or general contact route published there, rather than a number supplied in the suspicious message.
- Be cautious if the site exists only as a single landing page, has inconsistent company names, or sends you back to the recruiter’s private form.
These checks do not certify a company’s honesty or financial health. They establish a starting point controlled by the purported employer rather than by the person soliciting you.
2. Match the exact vacancy
Compare the details line by line
Open the vacancy on the employer’s independently found careers page and compare:
| Item | What to compare | What a mismatch means |
|---|---|---|
| Job title | Exact title, level, department, and any requisition or reference number | A different title may indicate a copied advert, an old opening, or a fabricated role. |
| Location | City, country, office, remote status, and any travel requirement | A location that changes between messages and the official listing needs explanation before you proceed. |
| Duties | Main responsibilities, required skills, schedule, and reporting relationship | Vague duties or a completely different role are warning signs. |
| Application method | The employer’s own application portal, account process, and requested documents | A demand to use a private form, messaging app, or unrelated site is not confirmed by the official listing. |
| Status | Whether the opening is current, closed, paused, or absent | An absent or closed role should be independently confirmed before any interview or data exchange. |
Do not assume that an advertisement on a well-known job board proves authorization. The FTC warns that criminals can hijack genuine advertisements and repost them. The official careers page is stronger evidence, but it is still only one part of the check: a scammer might imitate a company site, or an authentic opening might be used by an impostor recruiter.
When the vacancy is absent
Use an independently obtained company contact channel to ask whether the position exists and whether the named recruiter represents the company. Do not reply to the suspicious message for this confirmation if you can avoid it; doing so gives the sender another chance to direct the conversation. If the company cannot confirm the opening, do not submit an application, download files, or provide personal information.
3. Verify the recruiter independently
Inspect the complete sender address
Expand the sender details in your email client and read the full address, including the domain after the “@” symbol. A Gmail, Yahoo, or other personal mailbox is a warning sign for a person claiming to recruit on behalf of an established employer. It is not conclusive proof of fraud: some small organizations or independent recruiters use personal accounts. Conversely, a message from a professional-looking company domain is not proof of legitimacy because domains can be compromised, spoofed, or registered by an impostor.

Check for display-name tricks, reply-to addresses that differ from the sender, and subtle spelling changes. Do not open attachments or follow links merely to inspect them. You can copy the visible address as text and compare it with the domain shown on the company site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm the person through an employer-controlled channel
Use a phone number, general recruiting address, or contact form found independently on the company website. Ask whether the recruiter’s name, email address, and vacancy are genuine. Do not use the phone number, email address, calendar link, or messaging handle supplied only in the suspicious communication as your verification route.
A genuine recruiter may be unable to discuss confidential candidate information with a general receptionist, and a large company may use an outside recruiting agency. That does not remove the need for confirmation. Ask the employer which agency or recruiter is authorized and how you should contact them. If the company says it has no record of the person or role, end the exchange.
Do not treat branding as authentication
Logos, branded signatures, interview invitations, offer letters, employee names, and links to a real company homepage can all be copied. They are useful context, not independent verification. The decisive question is whether the employer, contacted through information you found yourself, recognizes both the vacancy and the recruiter.
4. Evaluate the recruiting process and pressure
Warning signs that deserve a pause
- An unexpected message that you did not initiate, especially one with little information about your experience.
- A job description so vague that you cannot identify the product, team, duties, location, or supervisor.
- An offer before a meaningful interview or before the employer has assessed your qualifications.
- An interview conducted only by text or chat when the explanation for avoiding a normal call or video meeting is weak.
- Unusually high pay for little work, an implausibly fast start date, or promises of guaranteed income.
- Pressure to decide immediately, keep the opportunity secret, move to a private messaging service, or bypass the company’s normal application process.
These are warning signs, not a mathematical test. Legitimate employers sometimes hire quickly, recruit remotely, use asynchronous interviews, or engage external agencies. Ask for a clear explanation and verify it with the employer independently. The FTC’s January 2023 Consumer Advice article, Looking for a job? Scammers might be looking for you, puts the limitation plainly: “There’s no sure-fire way to detect a job scam, but there are red flags that should raise your suspicions”.
Assess consistency across messages
Write down the title, pay, location, duties, interviewer names, start date, and next step. Compare each new message with the original listing and with the employer’s site. Frequent changes, unexplained contradictions, or a recruiter who cannot answer basic questions about the business should stop the process until independently resolved.

5. Protect money, identity, and devices
Never pay to obtain employment
Do not pay an application fee, training fee, background-check fee, equipment deposit, “registration” charge, or payment to release wages. A request for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or a payment app is especially dangerous. A recruiter who says a fee will be refunded later is still asking you to risk your money before employment is verified.
Reject the check-and-forward-money scheme
Do not deposit a check and send part of the proceeds to the recruiter, an equipment vendor, a shipping company, or another account. Do not buy gift cards and send the codes. A bank can initially show a deposit as available and later determine that the check is fraudulent; you may then be responsible for the withdrawn amount. The FTC specifically warns about job offers that involve depositing a check and forwarding money.
Delay sensitive information until a genuine hiring stage
Keep your Social Security number or equivalent national identifier, bank details, identity-document images, and account credentials private until you have independently confirmed the employer and reached a genuine hiring or onboarding stage. A legitimate employer may need some information for payroll or legal checks, but the timing and collection method should be explained and handled through a verified company process.

- Do not send identity documents to an unverified personal email address.
- Do not enter passwords or payment details into a form reached only through the recruiter’s link.
- Do not install remote-access software or unknown “work” applications at a recruiter’s request.
- Use a separate job-search email address and enable multifactor authentication on it.
These protective habits reduce harm while you investigate; they do not establish that an opportunity is legitimate.
6. Search for complaints without treating search results as proof
Use targeted searches
Search the company name, recruiter name, email domain, phone number, and distinctive wording from the job advertisement alongside terms such as “scam,” “complaint,” or “fraud.” Search for the real company and the alleged recruiter separately. A cluster of reports using the same script, payment request, or fake offer can reveal a pattern.
Search results, review sites, and forum posts are leads rather than conclusive evidence. A disgruntled applicant may mislabel a legitimate rejection as fraud, while a scam may have no public reports yet. Confirm any serious allegation with the employer through an independently located channel.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision framework
The following framework combines the checks above. It is a decision aid, not an FTC scoring system.
| Axis | Evidence to seek | If confirmed | If unresolved or negative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official vacancy | The role appears on a careers page reached independently, with matching title, location, duties, and application method. | Continue to recruiter verification. | Pause; ask the employer through an independent channel or stop. |
| Recruiter identity | The employer confirms the person, address, agency relationship, and opening using contact details you found yourself. | Continue while assessing the process. | Do not send documents, click links, or schedule through the unverified contact. |
| Process consistency | Interview steps, questions, timing, pay, and duties are coherent and explained by the employer. | Proceed cautiously to normal hiring checks. | Request clarification independently; pressure or contradictions justify ending contact. |
| Money and data | No payment, check-forwarding, gift-card request, or premature demand for sensitive identity or bank information. | Share only what the verified stage requires. | Stop immediately and report; contact your bank if you paid or disclosed details. |
A positive result on one axis cannot cancel a serious failure on another. For example, an authentic vacancy does not make a personal-email recruiter safe, and a company-domain address does not make a request for gift cards legitimate.
Common situations and how to handle them
The recruiter sends a link to a real company
Close the message and type the company address yourself. Find the vacancy through the site’s navigation and apply there if it matches. Then contact the employer using an independently published number or address to verify the recruiter. A link that merely lands on a genuine homepage does not authenticate the sender.

The job is on a major employment platform but not on the company site
Ask the employer whether the listing is current and authorized. Employment-platform placement is not proof that the employer approved the advertisement. Do not rely on platform badges, ratings, or a verified-looking profile as a substitute for employer confirmation.
Best Value
The recruiter uses an agency
Find the employer’s careers or vendor-information page independently and ask whether the agency is authorized for that role. Confirm the recruiter’s name and contact details with the employer or with a public agency channel you locate yourself. Never pay an agency to obtain the job unless you have independently verified the arrangement and the applicable rules in your jurisdiction; a demand for money remains a major warning sign.
The company has no public careers page
That absence alone does not prove fraud, particularly for a small business. Obtain the company’s legal or trading name, physical presence, and an independently sourced contact method. Ask who is hiring, what the role entails, and how applications are normally handled. If the business cannot be independently identified or contacted, do not proceed.
The process is remote or text-based
Remote work is not inherently suspicious, and some employers use chat or asynchronous screening. Ask why that format is used, request a verifiable company email or calendar invitation, and confirm the process with the employer through an independent channel. Text-only contact combined with urgency, vague duties, high pay, or requests for money is substantially more concerning than any one feature by itself.
If you already replied, paid, or sent information
- Stop communicating and do not send additional money, codes, documents, or passwords.
- Save the original messages, full headers, attachments, payment instructions, and screenshots.
- Contact your bank, card issuer, money-transfer service, or payment app immediately and ask what reversal or account-protection steps are available.
- Change any reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and monitor email, bank, and credit accounts.
- If you sent an identity document, ask the relevant government identity or credit-reporting authority what protective measures are available in your jurisdiction.
- Report the incident to the appropriate official agency; in the United States, FTC guidance points to
ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Do not pay a second company that promises to recover money or documents for an upfront fee. Recovery offers can target people who have already disclosed that they were scammed.
Final pre-reply checklist
- I found the company website without using the recruiter’s link.
- I located the careers section and matched the title, location, duties, application method, and current status.
- I inspected the full sender and reply-to addresses.
- I confirmed the recruiter and vacancy through contact information published by the employer.
- I understand the interview steps, compensation, duties, and next action.
- No one has asked me to pay, buy gift cards, deposit and forward a check, or move money.
- I have not shared sensitive identity or bank information before verified onboarding.
- I have searched for complaints and treated the results as leads, not proof.
If any item remains unresolved, pause rather than letting the message’s deadline make the decision for you. Independent confirmation is the safeguard; a polished email is only a claim.
