To check whether a commercial diving course is recognized for work in France, verify that the provider and course are covered by a current authorization for the relevant hyperbaric training, then check the exact credential awarded against the job’s activity mention, intervention class and professional qualification requirements. A foreign or internationally marketed certificate is not automatically equivalent to a French qualification.
Start with the work you intend to do
“Commercial diving” is too broad to establish which qualification applies. Identify the actual duties, work conditions and required intervention class, then compare them with the credential the course awards. The French Labour Code distinguishes activity mentions; mention A covers specified underwater work associated with businesses subject to the applicable certification rules. Article R. 4461-28 of the Labour Code says the certificat d’aptitude à l’hyperbarie indicates the activity mention and the intervention class, defined in relation to maximum relative pressure.

Verify the provider’s authorization
The Ministry of Labour says workers must hold a certificat d’aptitude à l’hyperbarie obtained after training provided by an authorized training body. Ask the provider for current documentary evidence that its authorization covers the provider, the specific course and the relevant activity. A course title or general claim of authorization does not by itself show that the particular training falls within the applicable scope. Inspect the credential the course awards
Ask for a sample or precise description of the final document and verify the fields it will show. The certificat d’aptitude à l’hyperbarie identifies the activity mention and intervention class; those details help establish the work and pressure scope it covers. For mention A work, the Labour Code also identifies professional-qualification routes, including the professional title scaphandrier de travaux publics, a competency block corresponding to the activity, or, in certain circumstances, an activity-matched professional certification registered in the RNCP. Compare the course with the intended job
Use the following checks when assessing one course or comparing providers:
- Authorization: Is the provider currently authorized, and does the authorization cover this course and its relevant scope?
- Activity mention and class: Which mention and intervention class will the awarded certificate specify, and do they fit the intended duties and pressure conditions?
- Professional qualification: For mention A work, what professional title, competency block or applicable RNCP certification does the course lead to?
- Employer requirements: Does the prospective employer accept the exact credential for the specific role?
- Evidence: Can the provider supply current documents showing the authorization and the exact award, rather than relying on promotional language?
Keep the distinctions clear: a hyperbaric safety certificate, a safety-training certificate and a professional qualification are related, but they should not be treated as interchangeable without evidence that they satisfy the requirements for the particular work.

For a foreign qualification, seek a decision on the exact case
Do not assume a certificate counts in France because it was issued in another country, is described as “international,” or carries an equivalence label used elsewhere. The Labour Code sets conditions for certain training acquired or titles issued outside France, including competent-authority evidence in relevant cases. The cited official sources provide a framework, but they do not determine whether an unnamed course is recognized or provide a complete public directory of every authorized provider and course. Before enrolling, request the authorization evidence and exact award details from the provider.
