A light that blinks or moves near a city is often an aircraft. A satellite usually appears as a steady point that glides smoothly along a continuous path without changing direction. Those are useful rules of thumb, not guarantees: a distant aircraft can appear nearly stationary, and brightness alone cannot identify what you are seeing.
Watch the object for several minutes, record the time, place and direction, and compare the sighting with a location-specific prediction. If the behavior and prediction do not line up, describe the object as “consistent with” an aircraft or satellite rather than claiming a definite identification.

Do not identify an object from one flash or one second of movement. The useful signal is how its appearance develops over several minutes.

Why a short glance can fool you
Angular motion is easy to underestimate when an object is far away. NASA specifically notes that an aircraft near the horizon may seem to move very slowly and can be difficult to distinguish from a bright planet. If you look away after a few seconds, a real aircraft may appear to be a fixed point.
Perspective also changes apparent speed. An aircraft traveling toward or away from you can cover a lot of ground while shifting only slightly against the stars. A satellite high overhead can appear to cross the sky rapidly, while a pass near the horizon may be harder to notice. These are reasons to observe for a sustained interval rather than treating “stationary” as proof of a satellite or a star.
A fixed light is outside the aircraft-versus-satellite choice unless it later shows motion. Planets and stars are common alternatives. The goal is not to force every observation into two categories; it is to decide whether the evidence supports either one.

A repeatable observation procedure
1. Watch for several minutes
Keep the object in view as long as practical. Use nearby stars, a roofline or another distant landmark as reference points. Do not rely on memory of where the object was when you first noticed it. Ask whether it has shifted relative to the background and whether its apparent speed is changing.
Note any flashes, pauses in visibility or changes in direction, but do not treat one brief interruption as a decisive satellite signature. The official guidance does not establish a universal disappear-and-reappear rule, and visibility can change for multiple reasons.
2. Describe the light without interpreting it
Write down what you actually see: steady or flashing, slow or fast, straight or changing direction, and whether it remains visible. Avoid labels such as “definitely a plane” in your notes. A neutral description makes it easier to compare the sighting with a prediction later.
3. Record the sighting details
- Date and local clock time, including the time zone if you are traveling.
- Your observing location, at least the town or city.
- The direction in which you first saw it and the direction in which it traveled.
- Approximate altitude, such as near the horizon, halfway up the sky or overhead.
- Whether the light blinked, changed direction or stayed on a smooth track.
Pass forecasts are tied to the observer’s location and time. Without those details, a later comparison is largely guesswork. If possible, write the observation immediately rather than trying to reconstruct it later.

4. Compare with a current prediction
For an ISS sighting, use NASA’s Spot the Station service. For general satellite-spotting information by location, NOAA recommends Heavens-Above. Enter the observing location and check a pass that matches the date and local time of your observation.
Do not reuse an old schedule. Satellite passes change with date and location, and a forecast for one city can be wrong for another only a short distance away. A useful match should agree on more than the day: the predicted time window, direction of travel and approximate part of the sky should all be compatible with your notes.

5. State the result at the right level of confidence
If the visual behavior and a current prediction agree, you can say the sighting is consistent with that satellite or pass. If the light blinked and the path did not match a satellite prediction, it is consistent with an aircraft. If the evidence conflicts or is incomplete, “undetermined” is the accurate result.
How aircraft and satellites usually look
Aircraft: blinking or changing presentation
NASA’s practical rule is that moving or blinking lights near a city are typically airplanes. Aircraft often remain visible long enough for you to notice a changing position, and their lights may appear to flash as the aircraft travels. However, the available guidance does not provide a universal color or flash-pattern chart, so do not require every aircraft to show the same red, green or white arrangement from every viewing angle.
Direction changes are also useful evidence. An aircraft can turn, alter its apparent path or slow relative to the background. A turning path is less consistent with the simple, straight, continuous motion expected from a satellite pass. It is still not an absolute test: poor visibility and perspective can make a straight aircraft path look irregular.
Satellites: a smooth, steady track
A satellite normally appears as a point of light moving smoothly along a continuous path. The Canadian Space Agency’s description of the ISS is especially useful: to the naked eye it looks like a big white dot that moves quickly across the sky without changing direction, unlike aircraft.
That description concerns the appearance of the ISS, not every satellite under every condition. A satellite may be faint, and its visibility depends on its apparent magnitude, the sky background and the observer’s conditions. Use the smooth path as a clue, then seek confirmation from a current prediction.
Brightness is context, not identification
Brightness is expressed as apparent magnitude, the way an object’s brightness is measured as seen from Earth. The scale is counterintuitive: lower or negative values indicate a brighter object. NOAA’s 2015 explanation gives useful context but is not a current pass timetable or a guarantee of what any individual observer will see.

| Sun | −26.7 | Shows the extreme bright end of the scale; it is context, not a way to classify a night-time sighting. |
| Venus at its brightest | −4.4 | Explains why a bright, apparently fixed point may be a planet rather than a moving object. |
| NOAA satellites at their brightest | +5.5 | A reported maximum brightness for those satellites in NOAA’s 2015 article, not a universal satellite value. |
| Approximate naked-eye limit | +6.5 | NOAA’s general estimate; haze, light pollution, eyesight and sky conditions can make the practical limit brighter. |
Because different objects can overlap in apparent brightness, “it was very bright” does not tell you whether it was an aircraft, a satellite, Venus or another star-like object. Use brightness only to decide whether you can keep observing it and whether a prediction is plausible.
How to use a pass prediction without overclaiming
Check the time window
A predicted pass is not a promise that an object will be visible at one exact second. Compare your observation with the forecast’s start and end times, allowing for the accuracy of your clock and the time required to notice the object.
Check the path
Look for agreement between the predicted direction and your recorded direction. A prediction that says an object should cross one part of the sky does not confirm a light seen in the opposite direction, even if the times are close.

Check the type of movement
A matching prediction should also fit the observed behavior. A steady point that follows a straight path is compatible with the ISS description. A light that repeatedly changes direction or presents obvious blinking is less compatible with that simple satellite pattern, even if a pass was scheduled.
Allow for missed or ambiguous observations
Cloud, haze, trees, buildings and competing lights can hide part of a pass. A forecast that does not produce a visible object is not proof that the forecast was wrong, and seeing a light near the predicted time is not proof that it was the predicted satellite. Treat the forecast as a verification step that increases or decreases confidence.
Common ambiguous cases
A light that seems motionless
Continue watching before deciding. The object may be a distant aircraft near the horizon, a planet or a star. If it remains fixed relative to nearby stars throughout several minutes, the aircraft-or-satellite question may not apply.
A steady light that moves slowly
Slow movement is not enough by itself. Record the direction and duration, then compare it with a current satellite forecast. An aircraft viewed nearly head-on can show little apparent motion; a satellite pass near the horizon can also be difficult to judge.
A light that blinks once
One flash is weak evidence. Look for a repeated pattern while the object moves. NASA’s rule of thumb concerns moving or blinking lights near cities, not an isolated change in visibility.
A very bright point
Do not infer identity from brightness. NOAA’s examples show that objects from the Sun to Venus and satellites occupy very different parts of the magnitude scale, while the practical naked-eye limit varies by observer and sky condition.
A sighting that vanishes
Do not use disappearance as a decisive diagnostic. The official guidance does not establish a specific disappear-and-reappear signature for satellites. Obstructions, haze, changing contrast and simple loss of attention can all interrupt an observation.
Improving the quality of an observation
Begin with the widest unobstructed view available. Trees, buildings and rooflines can remove part of a path, while haze and city lighting reduce contrast. These conditions do not identify the object, but recording them explains why a sighting may be incomplete. A short note such as “low over the western horizon, partly blocked by buildings” is more useful than a confident label.
Use a consistent reference frame. Nearby stars provide a fixed background, and a distant roofline can help you judge whether the light has shifted. Describe direction in ordinary terms—north, south, east or west if known—and add “near horizon,” “halfway up” or “overhead.” Exact instruments are not required for a useful first comparison, but a vague memory is difficult to check.

Separate observation from interpretation. “Steady white point, crossed from southwest to northeast in about four minutes” is an observation. “Satellite” is an interpretation to test. Keeping those separate prevents a later prediction from changing what you remember seeing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Interpreting conflicting clues
Clues can point in different directions. A light may move smoothly but appear to flash once; it may be bright enough to notice but not match a listed pass; or a predicted pass may occur while clouds obscure the sky. In these cases, rank the evidence rather than forcing a verdict. Repeated behavior over several minutes is stronger than a single flash, and agreement in time, location and direction is stronger than brightness alone.
A scheduled pass is also not a substitute for looking at the path. If a forecast places the object in the northern sky and your light traveled across the southern sky, the timing alone is insufficient. Conversely, a smooth track that resembles the ISS but occurs well outside the predicted window should remain only “consistent with a satellite,” not a confirmed identification.
The same caution applies to aircraft. A blinking light near a city fits NASA’s rule of thumb, but it does not name a particular aircraft or prove that no satellite was present. The most defensible conclusion describes the evidence and its limits.

A compact decision framework
- Observe: follow the light for several minutes and compare it with nearby stars.
- Classify the behavior: note blinking, smooth motion, turns and apparent speed.
- Record the context: date, local time, location, direction and approximate altitude.
- Verify: check NASA’s Spot the Station for an ISS pass or NOAA’s recommended Heavens-Above service for satellite information at your location.
- Report uncertainty honestly: use “consistent with an aircraft,” “consistent with a satellite,” or “undetermined” when the evidence does not support a stronger claim.
This process is more reliable than choosing between “plane” and “satellite” from a single visual feature. Motion over time supplies the first clue; a current, location-specific prediction supplies the independent check.
What the available guidance cannot establish
- There is no supported statistic here for the share of bright moving lights that are aircraft rather than satellites. Do not attach a percentage to a personal sighting.
- Aircraft do not have one guaranteed visible color or flashing pattern from every angle. A universal red, green and white checklist would overstate the evidence.
- Brightness thresholds are not identities. NOAA’s magnitude figures are useful background from a 2015 article, not a current catalog of satellite brightness.
- A visual match alone does not identify an individual satellite. Identification requires agreement with the observation’s time, location, direction and a current prediction.
When it is correct to remain uncertain
Some observations simply do not contain enough information. If you watched only briefly, cannot reconstruct the direction, or find no prediction that matches, the responsible conclusion is that the object could not be identified from that sighting. Try again with a clock, written notes and a longer observation. Uncertainty is not a failure of the method; it is the result when the available evidence does not distinguish an aircraft from a satellite or from a fixed celestial object.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is every blinking light an aircraft?
No. NASA says a moving or blinking light near a city is typically an airplane, but that is a rule of thumb. One isolated flash is weak evidence; watch for a repeated pattern and movement over several minutes.
Can an aircraft look stationary?
Yes. NASA notes that a distant aircraft near the horizon can have very low apparent motion and may be difficult to distinguish from a bright planet. Keep watching and compare the light with nearby stars before deciding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow long should I watch the object?
Watch for several minutes whenever practical. A few seconds can hide slow angular motion, while a longer interval reveals whether the path is smooth, whether the object turns and whether blinking repeats.
Best Value
What does the ISS look like from the ground?
The Canadian Space Agency says it looks like a big white dot moving quickly across the sky without changing direction. That description is a useful clue, not a guarantee for every satellite or every viewing condition.
Which services can verify a possible satellite?
Use NASA’s Spot the Station for International Space Station passes. NOAA recommends Heavens-Above for satellite-spotting information by observer location. Enter the correct location and compare the current forecast with your recorded time and direction.
Can brightness identify a satellite or aircraft?
No. NOAA explains apparent magnitude as brightness viewed from Earth and gives examples ranging from the Sun at −26.7 to Venus at −4.4, with NOAA satellites at their brightest reported around +5.5. Brightness overlaps and varies with conditions.
Are aircraft light colors a reliable checklist?
Not from the guidance used here. Aircraft may present different visible lights from different angles, and no universal color or flash-pattern chart is established. Use blinking and path behavior together instead of requiring a particular red, green or white arrangement.
What if a predicted pass does not match what I saw?
Check the date, local time, location, direction and approximate altitude again. Clouds, haze, trees and buildings can hide part of a pass. If the timing or path still conflicts, report the sighting as undetermined rather than forcing an identification.
Does a light that disappears prove it was a satellite?
No. The reviewed official guidance does not establish disappearance and reappearance as a decisive satellite signature. Obstructions, haze, changing contrast or losing track of the object can all produce the same appearance.
Can a visual observation identify a specific satellite?
Only with stronger confirmation. A smooth, steady track can be consistent with a satellite, but identifying an individual object requires agreement among the observation’s time, location, direction and a current pass prediction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Bottom Line
Watch first, write down what happened, and verify it against a current, location-specific prediction. Blinking or changing motion near a city is often consistent with an aircraft; a steady point on a smooth, unchanging track is often consistent with a satellite. When the clues conflict, “undetermined” is the accurate answer.
