An app being available, appearing in an app store, or claiming a foreign license does not establish that it is lawful in Bangladesh.
What Bangladesh’s current law says
The official Laws of Bangladesh text identifies the Gambling Prevention Act, 2026 (Act No. 98 of 2026), dated 1 July 2026, and states that it repeals the Public Gambling Act, 1867. The Act addresses digital gambling directly rather than treating it only as a matter of physical casinos or gaming venues.

Its definitions cover using an online gambling account and depositing, withdrawing, or transferring money for online gambling. “Online betting” includes bets on sports and other events, with formats listed such as sports, live, exchange, casino, virtual, fantasy, and esports betting. A different label—such as “gaming” or “fantasy”—does not by itself put a money-on-outcome activity outside the Act.

The materials reviewed do not establish a public consumer-facing register of betting apps licensed for use in the country or an authorization for any particular app.

Does it take money or something of value on an outcome?
Check whether users can stake money or value on a sporting event, other event, or game. Then check whether the service offers accounts, deposits, withdrawals, or transfers for that activity. Those features align with conduct expressly addressed by the Act’s online-gambling definitions.
Does the operator rely on an overseas license?
A foreign license may describe the operator’s status in the license’s issuing jurisdiction, but it is not proof of permission to serve users in Bangladesh. Do not treat a license badge, foreign company address, or claims about regulation elsewhere as a Bangladesh authorization.

Is the app available or still working?
Availability is not evidence of legality or government approval. The Act allows authorities to block or remove apps and related online infrastructure, including sites, domains, IP addresses, URLs, and mirror or clone sites. It assigns BTRC blocking responsibilities. A service that remains accessible may still be prohibited.
What not to do
- Do not open or use a real-money gambling account, deposit funds, or transfer money for betting.
- Do not give an operator or intermediary your NID details, biometrics, SIM credentials, bank information, MFS details, or wallet access. The Act addresses identity-related and gambling-related financial conduct; this caution is risk minimization, not legal authorization.
- Do not install unofficial app packages, use mirror domains, or use a VPN or proxy to evade a block. The Act criminalizes specified use of VPNs, proxies, mirror sites, and related infrastructure to conduct, conceal, or assist gambling or restore blocked platforms.
- Do not promote an operator or refer people to it. The Act addresses specified gambling promotion, affiliate marketing, sponsorship, and referral conduct.
Penalties and enforcement
Under the Gambling Prevention Act, 2026, online or remote gambling carries a statutory maximum of five years’ imprisonment, a fine up to Tk 1 crore, or both. These are maximum penalties in the statute, not a forecast of the outcome in an individual case. Other activities have their own provisions and penalties; the applicable section matters.

The Act provides for blocking or removing gambling websites, mobile apps, servers, domains, IP addresses, URLs, social pages, groups, channels, and digital platforms, including mirrors and clones. It assigns BTRC responsibilities for blocking illegal online services and gives Bangladesh Bank and BFIU roles relating to gambling transactions, suspicious accounts, money laundering, and financial intelligence.

If you have already shared money or personal information
- Contact your bank or mobile financial service provider through its official channel if you shared payment details or used an account for a transaction.
- Secure affected accounts and follow the provider’s guidance on disputed transactions or compromised credentials.
- For advice about your circumstances, consult a qualified Bangladesh lawyer or an appropriate authority. The statute sources do not set out a specific consumer reporting workflow.
