To verify that a payment has really cleared, check the transaction at the sending bank or payment service, then confirm a posted debit or credit in the relevant account. A receipt, “submitted” message, pending line, or card authorization may only show that an instruction was accepted or approved. If you need to know whether the recipient can use the money, the strongest practical check is a posted or available credit in the recipient’s account, confirmed with the recipient or receiving institution.
The exact meaning of “cleared” depends on the payment rail, bank, cutoff time, and country. The guidance below is primarily U.S.-focused; status labels are examples rather than universal definitions.

What “cleared” can mean
People use cleared to describe several different events:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The bank or payment service accepted your instruction.
- The payer’s account was debited and the transaction posted.
- The interbank payment was processed or settled.
- The recipient’s account was credited and the funds are available to use.
Those events can occur at different times. A sender may see a completed or sent status while the recipient is still waiting for the receiving bank to post the credit. Conversely, a displayed balance change may be temporary until the transaction posts or a return window expires. For a high-value or time-sensitive payment, verify both the sender-side record and the beneficiary-side credit.

Fastest way to check a payment
- Identify the payment rail and direction. Determine whether it is a wire, ACH credit or debit, debit-card or credit-card transaction, bill payment drawn from a bank account, or an incoming electronic deposit. Outgoing and incoming transactions can display different stages.
- Open the transaction details at the sending institution. Use the bank or payment provider’s account-activity, transfer, or payment-history screen. Record the status, amount, effective or processing date, timestamp, recipient details, and reference or confirmation number.
- Look for a posted debit or posted credit. A posted debit shows that the payer’s account has recorded the charge. A posted or available credit in the beneficiary’s account is the best practical evidence that the recipient can use the money. Do not rely only on a notification, email, available-balance change, or a pending entry.
- Read the status wording literally. “Submitted,” “received,” “authorized,” and “pending” usually describe an earlier processing stage. “Completed” or “sent” may mean the sending institution released the payment, not that the beneficiary’s account has posted it.
- Compare dates with business-day cutoffs. A transaction entered after a bank’s cutoff, on a weekend, or on a holiday may receive the next business day as its effective processing date.
- Ask the recipient to check the receiving account. If the practical question is “Can the recipient use the money?”, the recipient should inspect the receiving bank’s activity or contact that institution.
What common statuses establish—and what they do not
| Status or evidence | What it can establish | What it does not necessarily establish |
|---|---|---|
| Request submitted or receipt | The service received a payment instruction. For Pay.gov bank-account payments, the receipt confirms a request to charge the account; Pay.gov directs users to check the bank statement on the scheduled payment date. | That the bank processed the charge or that the recipient received usable funds. |
| Pending | The transaction is in a processing stage. In Wells Fargo’s digital-wire terminology, pending means the wire is in process. | A universal completion time, beneficiary credit, or ability to cancel. Labels differ by institution. |
| Card authorized | The card issuer approved the transaction against account validity and available credit. | That the final amount has posted, settled, or been paid to the merchant. |
| Completed or sent | Under Wells Fargo’s wire wording, the wire was sent successfully. | That every receiving bank has posted the credit or that funds are immediately available. |
| Posted debit | The payer’s account has recorded a completed posting. | That the recipient can already use the money or that the payment cannot later be returned or reversed. |
| Posted or available credit at the recipient | Strong practical evidence that the beneficiary can use the funds, subject to account-specific restrictions. | A guarantee against every later correction, reversal, dispute, or other account restriction. |
| Returned or failed | The institution or network reported a rejection or other problem. Wells Fargo describes a returned wire as one the recipient bank did not accept. | That the sender has already received the returned money; check the account and the bank’s processing notice. |
For the exact definition used by your bank, open its transfer terms or ask support. Never assume that another institution’s status vocabulary applies to your transaction.
A status timeline: from instruction to usable funds
A typical payment can pass through several records. First, the customer or biller submits an instruction. The sending service may issue a receipt immediately. The bank then reviews and schedules the item, applies a debit or authorization, and sends it through the relevant network. The receiving institution may then accept, reject, post, or hold the incoming credit. Only the final account entry tells you what happened at that account.
This explains why a sender’s app and a recipient’s app can appear inconsistent without either being wrong. They may be displaying different events, timestamps, or business days. A sender-side debit can be posted before the receiving bank posts the credit; a recipient may see an advance notice before an ACH deposit has arrived; and a card authorization can remain visible until the merchant submits the final transaction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy a balance or notification can mislead
An available-balance change is not always the same as a posted transaction. A pending debit can reduce available funds while awaiting final posting. A pending credit or advance direct-deposit notice can appear before the bank has received the money. A receipt email proves that an instruction was accepted by the service, not that the payment completed. Save the notification, but use the account activity and statement as the primary evidence.
How to verify an ACH transfer or bill payment
ACH moves money between banks and credit unions. It includes direct deposits, recurring debits, account-to-account transfers, and many online bill payments.
Allow for processing and returns
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that ACH can be processed the same day on eligible business days, but same-day processing does not necessarily mean the payment is completed that day. Processing can take days, and an ACH transaction can be returned for nonpayment—for example, when the account lacks sufficient funds. A pending direct deposit can also represent advance notice before the institution has actually received the funds.

Check both sides without paying twice
- Open the originator’s payment details and note whether the item is scheduled, pending, posted, returned, or failed.
- Check the payer’s statement for a posted debit rather than an authorization or temporary hold.
- Ask the recipient to check for a posted credit and any “available on” date.
- If the item remains unclear, contact the bank or credit union or the organization that initiated the ACH. Nacha says those parties are usually best positioned to investigate.
- Do not submit a second payment until the first one has been traced. A delayed ACH can post after you send a replacement, creating a duplicate debit.
The Nacha consumer ACH FAQs provide the relevant escalation guidance for direct deposits and other ACH payments.
ACH questions to ask support
Ask whether the entry has been originated, accepted, posted, returned, or placed on a future effective date. Confirm the amount, account used, expected posting date, and whether a return code or insufficient-funds problem exists. If a company initiated the debit, contact that company as well as your bank; the originator may be able to see information your consumer-facing account screen does not show.
How to verify a wire transfer
Read the sending bank’s wire record
Open the wire-detail or transfer-status page and save the reference number, amount, beneficiary information, and timestamps. Status stages can include scheduled, pending, completed, failed, or returned. For example, Wells Fargo describes scheduled as not yet started, pending as in process, completed as sent successfully, and returned as rejected by the recipient bank. These are that bank’s definitions, not a universal industry scale.
Trace a wire when the recipient cannot confirm it
Ask the sending bank to trace or investigate the payment. For Fedwire, successfully processed messages contain Input Message Accountability Data (IMAD) and Output Message Accountability Data (OMAD) identifiers, according to Federal Reserve Financial Services. The Federal Reserve also describes an investigation request that participating institutions can use to confirm receipt and credit to the creditor. Consumers generally obtain the appropriate trace or reference information through their own bank; they do not submit the interbank message themselves.
A sender-side “completed” status can establish that the sending institution released the wire, but it does not by itself prove that the beneficiary’s account has posted the credit. Have the recipient ask the receiving bank to search using the amount, sender, date, and wire reference.

- Confirm the beneficiary name, account number, routing or bank identifier, currency, and amount.
- Record when the wire was submitted and whether it was before or after the bank’s cutoff.
- Keep the bank’s confirmation or trace number.
- Ask whether the wire is still pending, has been released, was rejected, or was returned.
- If the recipient has no credit, request a formal trace and give the receiving bank the available reference information.
How to verify a debit- or credit-card payment
Authorization is not posting
A card authorization tells the merchant that the account is valid and that sufficient credit or funds appear available. It is not the same as final posting or settlement. The CFPB’s card-authorization guidance and its background paper on available funds distinguish authorization from later settlement and disbursement.

- Check the card issuer’s activity screen for the transaction.
- Distinguish an authorization or pending hold from a posted charge on the statement.
- Compare the final posted amount with the receipt; tips, deposits, currency conversion, or adjustments can change the amount.
- If a payment to your credit-card account is missing, contact the card company and preserve proof of payment.
For a missing credit-card payment, the CFPB says to send a written billing-error notice within 60 days of the statement that should have shown the payment. Follow the issuer’s stated address and procedure, not merely a general customer-service email.
Incoming electronic deposits and when funds should be available
For U.S. consumer deposit accounts, the CFPB’s deposit-availability guidance says electronic wire transfers and ACH deposits generally must be made available by the next business day, subject to applicable cutoff times and other rules. A deposit received after a bank’s cutoff can count as received on the next business day.
This is a U.S. consumer-deposit rule summary, not a universal promise for international transfers, every payment service, or every account type. “Available” also describes access under the account’s rules; it is not necessarily the same as a sender’s interbank settlement timestamp.
When the sender and recipient see different statuses
Different screens are often showing different stages rather than contradicting one another. Compare the records in this order:
- Rail and direction: Confirm that both parties are discussing the same wire, ACH item, card transaction, or bank-funded payment.
- Stage: Match submitted, authorized, processing, sent, posted, returned, or failed. “Sent” is earlier than “posted to the beneficiary.”
- Timestamp and business day: Check the institution’s cutoff, time zone, weekend or holiday handling, and any stated effective date.
- Account event: Compare the payer’s posted debit with the recipient’s posted or available credit.
- Reference: Use the confirmation, trace, IMAD/OMAD, or other reference number so the institution searches the exact transaction.
There is no single processing deadline that applies to every rail, bank, country, or payment service. If the recipient cannot find the credit after the institution’s stated window, escalate through the party that controls the next step.
Who to contact when a payment is missing
Outgoing payment or transfer
Start with the sending bank or payment provider. Provide the date, amount, destination, recipient name and account details, status shown, and reference number. Ask whether the payment was released, posted, returned, rejected, or still under review, and request a trace when the recipient has no credit.

Incoming payment
The recipient should contact the receiving bank or provider and ask it to search incoming transactions using the sender, amount, date, and reference. A sender cannot always see the receiving institution’s posting or account-specific hold.

ACH transaction
Contact either the consumer’s bank or credit union or the organization initiating the ACH. Nacha’s consumer guidance identifies those parties as generally best placed to answer questions about direct deposits and other ACH payments.
Missing credit-card payment
Contact the card issuer promptly. If the payment should have appeared on a statement, use the issuer’s billing-error process and observe the CFPB’s 60-day written-notice timing.

Practical decision guide
| What you see | Next action |
|---|---|
| Receipt or submitted status only | Wait for the scheduled or processing date, then check the statement for a posted debit and the recipient account for a credit. |
| Pending ACH | Check business-day timing and ask the originator or bank whether it is still processing; do not create a duplicate payment. |
| Completed wire but no beneficiary credit | Ask the sending bank for a trace and give the recipient the reference details to search with the receiving bank. |
| Card authorization but no posted charge | Check the issuer’s activity and statement; authorization alone is not final posting. |
| Returned or failed status | Confirm why it was rejected, verify whether money has been returned, correct the underlying details, and obtain a new payment instruction if needed. |
| Posted debit with no recipient confirmation | Have the sender’s institution trace the payment and have the recipient’s institution search incoming credits. A posted debit alone does not prove beneficiary availability. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a receipt means settlement.
- Equating “pending” with a guaranteed arrival date.
- Using another bank’s definition of “completed” to interpret your own account.
- Sending a replacement ACH before checking whether the first item is processing.
- Treating a card authorization as a final merchant payment.
- Calling the wrong institution: the sender’s bank cannot confirm a receiving account’s internal posting, while the recipient’s bank may not be able to trace an outgoing wire without sender-side information.
- Sharing credentials while trying to obtain a trace. Banks should need transaction details, not your password or authentication code.
Bottom line
A payment has the strongest practical evidence of clearing when the relevant account shows a posted entry and, for a transfer, the recipient confirms an available credit. Treat receipts, pending statuses, authorizations, and sender-side “sent” messages as evidence of an earlier stage. For ACH, allow for processing and returns; for wires, request a bank trace; for cards, distinguish authorization from posting. When the answer matters, verify with the institution that can see the next step rather than relying on an email or notification.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my bank transfer went through?
Open the sending bank’s transaction details, check for a posted debit and a final status, and ask the recipient to confirm a posted or available credit. Keep the confirmation or trace number. A receipt or “submitted” label alone is not proof that the recipient has usable funds.
Best Value
Does pending mean the payment has cleared?
No. Pending generally means the transaction is still in a processing stage. The exact meaning varies by institution, and a pending ACH, wire, or card item may later post, fail, or be returned.
Why does my bank say completed but the recipient has not received it?
“Completed” may mean the sending institution released the payment, not that the receiving bank posted the credit. Ask the sending bank to trace the transaction and have the recipient ask the receiving bank to search using the amount, date, sender, and reference number.
Is a card authorization the same as a posted payment?
No. Authorization confirms that the card account is valid and appears to have sufficient credit or funds. Check the issuer’s activity and statement for the final posted charge or payment.
What does a payment confirmation email prove?
It usually proves that the service received or accepted an instruction. For Pay.gov bank-account payments, the receipt confirms a request to charge the account; Pay.gov directs users to check the bank statement on the scheduled payment date.
Who should I contact if an ACH payment is missing?
Contact your bank or credit union and the organization that initiated the ACH. Nacha identifies those parties as generally best positioned to investigate direct deposits and other ACH payments.
How long should an electronic deposit take to become available?
For U.S. consumer deposit accounts, CFPB guidance says electronic wire transfers and ACH deposits generally must be available by the next business day, subject to cutoff times and other rules. This is not a universal promise for international transfers or every payment service.
What should I do if an ACH payment might have been sent twice?
Do not send another replacement immediately. Check whether the first item is pending or posted, then ask the bank or originator to trace it. A delayed ACH can post after a replacement and create a duplicate debit.
