Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, select the live stream or scheduled stream, then choose Edit > Monetization. Confirm that Monetization is set to On. That checks the stream-level setting—but ad eligibility also depends on your channel, accepted monetization terms, content, stream format and viewing context. Even when everything is enabled, YouTube does not guarantee that an ad will appear for every viewer.
Check the live stream’s monetization setting
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Go live.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab to work with a stream you are setting up, or choose the scheduled stream under Manage.
- Choose Edit, then Monetization.
- Check that Monetization is set to On. Review the selected mid-roll option too if you want to check how mid-rolls are handled.
This confirms the setting for that stream; it does not confirm every other condition for earning revenue or guarantee ad delivery. YouTube’s live monetization guidance says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.”
Check the channel and monetization terms
The stream-level switch is only one part of the check. YouTube says a channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) to choose ad monetization. For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams, the creator must also accept the Watch Page Monetization Module in Studio’s Earn section. Check the channel’s Earn area if the stream’s Monetization panel is unavailable or the channel cannot earn.
These are separate checks: channel/program status, acceptance of the relevant module, and the individual stream’s Monetization setting. An On setting alone does not establish that all three are in place.

What “eligible for ads” means for a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s documented live-stream controls do not describe a special 24/7 eligibility switch. Apply the same checks used for live streams generally, and do not assume that continuous operation means continuous ad delivery. Check each of these conditions:
- Channel: the channel is in YPP and able to monetize.
- Agreement: the Watch Page Monetization Module is accepted for Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue.
- Stream: Monetization is On in that stream’s Live Control Room settings.
- Content: the stream meets advertiser-friendly requirements and is not subject to an age restriction that makes it ineligible.
- Format and context: the stream format and the way viewers watch it support the ad types you expect.
- Delivery: an eligible stream can still show no ad to a particular viewer.
Choose or inspect the live ad setting
When monetization is on for a live stream, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on. Mid-roll ads can be automatic, scheduled or manually inserted. The options differ in how much control and active effort they require; none guarantees an impression.

| Mid-roll option | How it works | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube places mid-rolls at natural breakpoints. You can choose a frequency level. | YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. Its automatic behavior can limit interruptions for channel members, pause mid-rolls temporarily for some viewers interacting with gifts or Super Chat and Stickers, and snooze ads during moments of high engagement. |
| Scheduled | You select an interval: every 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30 minutes. | The selected interval does not mean every viewer will receive an ad at every break. |
| Manual | You insert ad breaks while the stream is live. | It requires active placement. If you do not insert a break, no manual mid-roll ad is served. |
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and says scheduled or manual settings may have lower earnings potential. That is guidance about potential, not a promise about a particular channel’s revenue. Viewers can receive automatic mid-rolls at different times; someone who does not get an ad continues watching, while someone who skips or finishes one rejoins the live stream.
Delay automatic mid-rolls
In Live Control Room, Delay ads can defer automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. A countdown appears before ads resume. YouTube cautions that manually placed mid-rolls still display when Delay ads is on, so this control does not suppress a manual break.

Check content suitability and format
Advertiser-friendly content and age restrictions
Content monetized with ads must follow YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Content that does not meet those guidelines may receive limited or no ads. A video that is not suitable for all audiences may be age restricted and ineligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy overview applies to live streams as well as other video formats. Turning monetization on does not override a policy or rights decision.
Horizontal versus vertical live
YouTube’s live-stream format comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll live ads as supported for horizontal live streams, but not for the vertical live feed. If you are checking a vertical feed and those ad types are unavailable, that can reflect the format limitation rather than a Studio fault.

Autoplay on an external embed
YouTube says ads are turned off for a live stream when its player is embedded on an external site with autoplay. This specific autoplay case should not be generalized into a guarantee that ads will run in every other embed context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why ads may not appear even when Monetization is On
- The channel is not eligible or the required module is not accepted: check YPP status and the Watch Page Monetization Module in Studio’s Earn section.
- The stream’s setting is off: return to Create > Go live > select the stream > Edit > Monetization and confirm it is On.
- The content has limited or no ad suitability, or an age restriction: review the content’s policy status and YouTube’s advertiser-friendly rules.
- The feed is vertical: YouTube’s format comparison does not list live pre-roll or mid-roll support for vertical live feeds.
- The external player is autoplaying: YouTube says ads are turned off in this embed case.
- A viewer simply was not served an ad: ad slots are not guaranteed, and viewers may receive ads at different times.
- No manual mid-roll was inserted: in manual mode, a mid-roll requires the creator to insert a break while live.
How much can automatic mid-rolls change revenue?
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour among creators who turned on live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. The platform described this comparison in January 2024 across 207 countries. It is a YouTube-reported average, not a guaranteed or causal estimate for an individual channel, and it should not be treated as a current earnings forecast.
