How to Check Whether a 10,000mAh Power Bank Will Fully Charge Your Phone

Do not compare the power bank’s 10,000mAh label directly with your phone’s battery mAh. Convert both batteries to watt-hours (Wh), then discount the power bank for voltage-conversion and charging losses. If the bank’s estimated delivered Wh is comfortably higher than the phone’s battery Wh, a full charge from near empty is plausible. If the figures are close, phone use, temperature, battery age, cable and charging-protocol differences can decide whether the phone reaches 100%.

Why a 10,000mAh label is not an answer by itself

Milliamp-hours (mAh) measure electrical charge, not total stored energy. Energy depends on both charge and voltage. A phone battery and a power bank usually use different voltage levels internally, so equal mAh ratings do not automatically represent equal amounts of energy.

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) documents battery-capacity reporting in both mAh and mWh. For comparing batteries with different voltage ratings, watt-hours are the useful common unit. The conversion is:

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × voltage (V)

Use the battery’s own rated voltage in that equation. For the phone, that means the voltage of the internal battery, not the 5V (or higher) voltage coming from a USB charger. For the power bank, use its stated watt-hour rating or the voltage at which its mAh figure was measured.

A “10,000mAh” bank often describes its internal cells at a nominal voltage. The USB output is created by an electronic converter, and neither that conversion nor the phone’s charging process is lossless. Therefore, the label describes the bank’s stored energy under a rating convention, not the exact amount that will arrive in the phone.

Collect the specifications before calculating

Write down the following values from the phone, power bank and cable packaging or manuals. If a value is missing, do not silently substitute a number from a different device or voltage basis.

  • Phone battery capacity: the rated mAh, or a stated Wh value.
  • Phone battery voltage: usually printed in a detailed specification rather than on the retail box. Use the manufacturer’s rated or nominal battery voltage.
  • Power-bank energy: a Wh figure is preferable. If only mAh is listed, find the voltage at which that capacity is rated.
  • Power-bank output: the supported voltage and current combinations, or output wattage.
  • Charging protocol and port: for example, whether the port and phone support a compatible USB Power Delivery mode, and which cable is required.

Do not use the bank’s USB output voltage as the phone-battery voltage in the phone calculation. USB output specifications describe the delivery stage; the phone battery’s rated voltage describes the energy stored inside the phone.

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Find the phone’s battery data. Record its mAh and rated voltage. If the manufacturer gives only Wh, skip the conversion and use that Wh figure directly.
  2. Convert the phone capacity to Wh when necessary. Divide mAh by 1,000 and multiply by the battery voltage. For example, a hypothetical 4,000mAh battery rated at 3.85V has (4,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.85 = 15.4Wh.
  3. Find the bank’s Wh rating. Use the printed Wh value if available. If the bank lists only mAh, identify the voltage basis first, then apply the same formula. A 10,000mAh claim at 3.7V would represent 37Wh; that result would not be valid if the 10,000mAh was measured at another voltage.
  4. Estimate energy available at the USB output. Apply a realistic loss allowance rather than treating the bank’s rated Wh as delivered Wh. Anker’s 2026 capacity guidance uses 60%–70% as a manufacturer rule of thumb for usable capacity after conversion to 5V. This is guidance, not a universal efficiency guarantee.
  5. Compare the two energy values. If the estimated output Wh is comfortably above the phone’s battery Wh, one full charge from near empty is plausible. If the values are similar, the result is conditional. If the estimated output is lower, a complete charge is unlikely without unusually favorable conditions or a phone that is not actually empty.
  6. Check the delivery path. Confirm that the bank’s output mode, phone charging protocol and cable can operate together. A capacity calculation cannot compensate for a port or cable that does not support the required charging mode.

Worked examples using the same 10,000mAh class

The following examples show the arithmetic only. They are not test results for a particular phone and bank combination.

Example 1: 4,000mAh phone battery

Assume a phone battery rated at 4,000mAh and 3.85V:

(4,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.85 = 15.4Wh

An Anker A1642 user guide lists its bank as 10,000mAh / 37Wh (the year of that guide is not stated). Applying the manufacturer’s 60%–70% usable-output estimate gives:

  • 37Wh × 0.60 = 22.2Wh
  • 37Wh × 0.70 = 25.9Wh

Those estimated 22.2–25.9Wh at the 5V output exceed the phone’s 15.4Wh stored-energy figure, so a full charge from near empty is plausible on paper. The calculation still does not promise that the phone will display 100%, because the phone may be used during charging and real conversion efficiency varies.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Example 2: 5,000mAh phone battery

For a hypothetical 5,000mAh battery rated at 3.85V:

(5,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.85 = 19.25Wh

The same 22.2–25.9Wh estimated output is only moderately above 19.25Wh. A complete charge remains plausible, but the margin is much smaller. Navigation, video, mobile-data use, high temperature or an aged battery can consume enough energy during the session to prevent the phone from reaching its final percentage points.

Example 3: 3,000mAh phone battery

For a hypothetical 3,000mAh battery rated at 3.70V:

(3,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.70 = 11.1Wh

The estimated output is substantially higher than 11.1Wh. That makes a full charge more likely than in the 5,000mAh example, but it is still an estimate rather than a guaranteed number of charges. Battery-management limits and operating conditions remain relevant.

How to read the margin

Comparison of estimated bank output with phone Wh What it means
Clearly higher A full charge from near empty is energetically plausible, with room for normal losses and some variation.
Only slightly higher or nearly equal The phone may finish below 100% if it is used, warm, aged or connected through a less efficient path.
Lower The bank does not appear to contain enough deliverable energy for a complete charge under the stated assumptions.

What output voltage, wattage and protocols change

Capacity and charging speed are different measurements. Watt-hours describe how much energy is stored; watts describe how quickly energy can be delivered.

Output voltage and current

Anker’s A1642 manual lists a 5V, 2.4A output for that model. Multiplying those figures gives a maximum of 12W in that stated mode, but the figures are model-specific. They show the possible delivery rate, not an additional 12Wh of capacity.

A bank may list several voltage/current combinations rather than one fixed output. The phone and bank negotiate an allowed mode, and the actual rate can fall below the headline maximum as the phone’s battery fills or its temperature rises.

USB Power Delivery and other charging protocols

USB Power Delivery (USB PD) provides flexible power negotiation and coexists with USB Battery Charging. A phone and bank that support a compatible higher-power mode can charge faster than a basic 5V connection. Faster charging does not increase the bank’s stored Wh, however; it changes the rate and potentially the conversion conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Port and cable compatibility

Use a cable suitable for the bank’s port and the phone’s charging mode. A cable that cannot carry the negotiated mode can reduce charging speed or prevent that mode from starting. When checking a bank, record the connector type, supported modes and any cable requirement alongside the Wh rating.

Why the estimate can differ from the phone’s percentage

The Wh comparison is an energy budget, not a direct reading of the phone’s state-of-charge display. Several variables affect delivered energy:

  • Voltage conversion: the bank’s cells operate at their internal voltage, while USB output and the phone’s battery use different stages. Each conversion introduces losses.
  • Charging losses inside the phone: the phone’s charging circuit and battery-management system consume some input energy.
  • Phone use during charging: the phone draws power while it is receiving power. A screen, processor, radio or camera can consume part of the bank’s output before it reaches the battery.
  • Temperature: the bank or phone may reduce charging power when warm or cold, and temperature affects conversion behavior.
  • Battery condition: an aged phone battery may have less usable capacity than its original rating, while its charging controls can also alter the final part of the charge.
  • Charging conditions: cable quality, connector resistance, protocol negotiation and the point at which the bank or phone stops charging all influence the result.

These factors explain why a label-based calculation can establish plausibility but cannot guarantee a particular final percentage for every session.

How to check a bank’s label without mixing specifications

Prefer Wh over an unqualified mAh number

A Wh rating lets you compare the bank’s energy basis with the phone’s battery energy directly. If a product lists both mAh and Wh, verify that they are mathematically consistent with the same nominal voltage. If they are not, look for a footnote explaining different rating conditions rather than choosing whichever number appears larger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the voltage behind the mAh claim

“10,000mAh” without a voltage is incomplete for an energy comparison. A bank rated at 10,000mAh at 3.7V represents a different Wh figure from one rated at 10,000mAh at another nominal voltage. The voltage basis should appear in the detailed specifications or manual; if it does not, mark the result as uncertain.

Separate capacity data from output data

Capacity may appear in a specifications table beside output voltage/current figures. Do not add or compare those numbers as though they were the same unit. Capacity is measured in mAh or Wh; delivery rate is measured in amps or watts.

A practical worksheet

Use this worksheet for a specific phone and bank:

  1. Phone mAh: ________
  2. Phone rated voltage: ________ V
  3. Phone energy: (mAh ÷ 1,000) × V = ________ Wh
  4. Power-bank rated Wh: ________ Wh
  5. Estimated usable fraction: use the bank’s stated estimate; if none is provided, label the result as an assumption rather than a measured fact.
  6. Estimated output energy: bank Wh × usable fraction = ________ Wh
  7. Margin: estimated output Wh − phone Wh = ________ Wh
  8. Output mode and cable: ________

A positive margin indicates that the arithmetic supports a full charge. A small positive margin calls for caution because normal operating losses and phone use can consume it. A negative margin indicates that the stated combination is unlikely to complete a charge from near empty.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing 10,000mAh directly with 4,000mAh or 5,000mAh

Why it fails: the two mAh figures may refer to different battery voltages and do not account for conversion losses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: convert both batteries to Wh using each battery’s own rated voltage, then discount the bank’s output.

Using 5V for the phone-battery calculation

Why it fails: 5V is a USB delivery voltage, not necessarily the phone cell’s rated voltage.

Correction: use the phone battery voltage for the phone’s stored-energy estimate and reserve USB voltage/current figures for the output and speed check.

Treating the bank’s rated Wh as delivered Wh

Why it fails: the bank must convert its internal battery voltage to the phone’s charging input, and the phone also has charging losses.

Assuming a higher wattage means more total charge

Why it fails: watts measure the rate of delivery, not the bank’s stored energy.

Correction: use Wh for the full-charge question and watts/protocols for charging speed and compatibility.

Ignoring the cable and protocol

Why it fails: an otherwise adequate energy budget may not be delivered at the expected mode if the cable, port or negotiation is incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: verify the complete path from bank port to cable to phone and check the supported charging standards.

When a physical measurement is useful

The label calculation is normally enough to decide whether a full charge is plausible. For troubleshooting or product comparison, an external USB power meter can show energy passing through a cable during a particular session. Such a reading is condition-specific: it includes that phone’s charging behavior, the selected output mode, temperature and the way the phone was used. It should supplement, not replace, the specification-based Wh calculation.

Independent measured performance is a useful comparison axis when it is available, but a model-specific test is not a universal result. No independent test of a named phone-and-bank pair establishes a guaranteed outcome here.

How to compare two 10,000mAh power banks

Comparison point Question to ask Why it matters
Rated energy What is the bank’s Wh rating, and at what voltage is any mAh claim measured? Provides a common energy basis for comparison.
Usable output Does the manufacturer state an output-capacity or conversion estimate? Shows how much of the internal rating may reach a 5V device; treat estimates as model guidance, not guarantees.
Power and protocol Which voltage/current combinations and charging protocols are supported? Determines compatibility and charging rate.
Port and cable Does the connector and cable support the phone’s required mode? Prevents a capable bank from being limited by the connection.
Measured performance Is there an independent test under clearly stated conditions? Helps reveal real delivered energy, but only for the tested setup and conditions.

The limit of what the calculation can promise

A model-specific estimate can answer whether a full charge is energetically plausible. It cannot promise that every phone will receive a full charge from every 10,000mAh bank, because the phone battery, bank rating basis, conversion efficiency, output mode, cable, temperature and charging behavior all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a reliable decision, use the phone’s own battery voltage, the bank’s rated Wh, a clearly labeled loss assumption and a compatibility check. Treat the resulting margin as a confidence indicator rather than a guaranteed charge count.
