Check 5G in three separate ways: look up your exact address on the provider’s coverage map, verify that your phone and service can use that network, then test the live cellular connection with Wi‑Fi disabled. A map predicts coverage; the 5G icon confirms a current connection; a speed test measures performance at one moment. None of these results alone proves that every room, device or time of day will work.
What “5G available” and “5G working” actually mean
People often use “5G coverage” to describe three different conditions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Predicted availability: A carrier or regulator estimates that a 5G signal should reach a location.
- Active connection: Your compatible phone, SIM and service actually attach to a 5G network at that place and time.
- Useful performance: The connection delivers enough speed and reliability for your task, such as video calls, streaming or large downloads.
These measures can disagree. A map may predict outdoor 5G while a concrete building blocks the signal indoors. Your phone may display 5G but deliver poor speeds during congestion. Conversely, a phone may stay on LTE even inside a mapped 5G area because the device, plan, signal layer or current network conditions do not permit 5G.
| Check | What it tells you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Provider coverage map | Where the operator predicts a particular technology or signal tier. | A guaranteed connection in every room or at every moment. |
| Regulator map | Reported or modeled coverage from an independent national data set, where available. | The exact experience of your phone at your address. |
| Phone network indicator | Whether your handset is currently using a 5G connection. | That speeds are high or that the connection will remain stable. |
| Cellular speed test | Download, upload and latency under the conditions of that test. | The geographic extent of coverage or future performance. |
Opensignal defines 5G Availability as the proportion of time that users with a 5G device and 5G subscription had an active 5G connection. That is a time-based experience measure, not a promise that a particular building is inside a mapped 5G area. See the Opensignal methodology overview for the distinction between availability and geographic experience.

1. Check the carrier’s map at the exact location
Start with the network you intend to use. A broad city name is not enough: coverage can change from one street, building or hillside to the next.
- Open the provider’s official mobile coverage map.
- Search your full street address, postcode or a nearby landmark.
- Select the mobile network view, not a fixed-home-broadband map.
- Turn on the 5G layer and read the legend. Some maps distinguish low-, mid- or high-band 5G; others use labels such as “good,” “fair” or “limited.”
- Check whether the map offers separate outdoor, in-vehicle or indoor explanations and note the map’s data date.
- Repeat the lookup for every place where you need service: home, workplace, school, regular travel route and frequently visited buildings.
Carrier maps are the best first check for a particular operator because they can account for that operator’s network and eligible devices. They are still estimates. For example, the T-Mobile coverage map and FAQs explain that its map approximates anticipated outdoor coverage and that a handset can move among LTE and different 5G signal types. Treat that explanation as carrier-specific rather than a universal rule for every provider.
Do not infer a speed from a colored area unless the legend supplies a speed category. Even then, the category is a modeled or reported range, not a guaranteed result for your phone. Save a screenshot or record the address, layer and date if you are comparing providers later.

United States: FCC National Broadband Map
In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Map instructions explain the address-level process:
- Open the map and search the address.
- Switch to Mobile Broadband, rather than the fixed-broadband view.
- Select the provider you want to inspect.
- Display the 5G layer and compare the available technology and speed categories.
- Use the map’s data-as-of controls to see how current the underlying report is.
The FCC mobile view includes two modeled 5G thresholds: 7/1 Mbps and 35/3 Mbps (download/upload). They describe expected coverage tiers in the map’s model; they are not a promise that your phone will achieve those rates continuously. The map also distinguishes stationary outdoor and in-vehicle views.

The FCC’s key limitation is explicit: “The coverage areas reflect where consumers should be able to connect to the mobile network when outdoors or in a moving vehicle; they do not show indoor coverage.” A positive result therefore answers an outdoor or travel question, not whether a signal reaches your bedroom, basement or office corner.
United Kingdom: Ofcom checker
For the United Kingdom, use Ofcom’s mobile coverage checker FAQ and its linked checker. Ofcom says operators provide coverage predictions that are processed into a 50 m by 50 m grid across the UK land mass. It describes the checker as periodically updated, aiming for updates every three months or alongside its Connected Nations publications.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ofcom cautions that computer predictions are generally reliable but cannot guarantee coverage in a particular area because very local factors can change the result. Check the provider’s own map as well, especially when a handset or plan has specific compatibility requirements. Do not state an Ofcom “latest update” date unless the live checker displays it; the FAQ does not supply a fixed current date.
3. Confirm that your phone and service can use 5G
A mapped signal cannot make an incompatible handset connect. Before interpreting the phone’s indicator, verify all of the following:
- Handset model: Check the exact model number, not merely the product family. Regional variants can support different 5G bands.
- Network compatibility: Confirm that the phone supports the provider’s 5G frequencies and network configuration. A 5G label on the box does not mean it supports every operator’s 5G layer.
- Service eligibility: Check that your plan, line and SIM or eSIM are eligible for the provider’s 5G service. Some operators require a particular service feature or account setting.
- Software and settings: Install the manufacturer’s current carrier settings and system updates, and make sure the preferred network mode allows 5G rather than LTE-only operation.
- Cellular data: Ensure mobile data is enabled and that a data limit, roaming setting or account restriction is not blocking use.
Carrier documentation generally treats capable equipment and qualifying service as prerequisites. A compatible phone can still fall back to LTE when the 5G layer is weak, unavailable to that device, congested or temporarily out of service. That fallback is normal network behavior, not proof that the map is wrong.

4. Test a real 5G connection at the place that matters
After the map and compatibility checks, test your own handset. The objective is to make sure the result comes from cellular service rather than a nearby Wi‑Fi network.
- Go to the exact room, desk, street or route where you need service.
- Turn off Wi‑Fi. On many phones, opening quick settings and tapping the Wi‑Fi icon is sufficient; verify that the Wi‑Fi symbol disappears.
- Leave cellular data enabled and make sure airplane mode is off.
- Generate cellular traffic by opening a webpage, sending a message or starting a short download.
- Observe the network indicator. It may show 5G, 5G+, 5G UW, 5G UC, LTE or another operator-specific label. Record what appears while data is moving, not only when the phone is idle.
- Repeat the observation outdoors, near a window and in the indoor location where service is most important.
- Repeat at a second time of day. A single observation can coincide with a temporary outage, maintenance or heavy traffic.
Do not treat the icon as a speed grade. Phones can display a 5G indicator with modest performance, and some networks use an indicator when 5G is available for part of a connection while data is handled through another layer. The practical question is whether the phone maintains a usable cellular connection for your task.
5. Measure performance separately with a cellular speed test
Use a reputable speed-test app or website only after Wi‑Fi is disabled. Run at least three tests in the same place, recording the time, indoor or outdoor setting, network indicator, download speed, upload speed and latency. Keep the phone stationary during each run and avoid a simultaneous large download on another device.
Interpret the readings as snapshots. Results can change with signal strength, walls and other obstructions, the handset, cell-site capacity, traffic, weather-related conditions, an outage and the test server. A fast reading does not establish that the surrounding neighborhood is covered; a slow reading does not by itself prove that no 5G signal exists.
| Observed result | Likely interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Map predicts 5G; phone shows 5G; repeated tests are usable. | Coverage, device connection and current performance agree at that location. | Repeat at the times and rooms where reliability matters. |
| Map predicts 5G; phone stays on LTE. | Investigate compatibility, plan eligibility, settings, signal conditions or a temporary network issue. | Test outdoors, verify the exact model and contact the provider if the discrepancy persists. |
| Phone shows 5G; tests are slow or unstable. | A 5G connection exists, but performance is affected by congestion, signal quality, obstructions or equipment. | Repeat at another time and nearby spot; compare indoor and outdoor results. |
| Map does not predict 5G; phone briefly shows 5G. | The map may be conservative, the phone may be near a boundary or the indicator may reflect a transient connection. | Record repeated tests and check the provider’s map legend and update date. |
6. Troubleshoot a map-and-phone disagreement
Change location methodically
Move a short distance rather than immediately concluding that the whole area lacks service. Test outside, at a window and in the room where you normally use the phone. Compare a stationary test with one taken during a normal drive or walk if in-vehicle service matters. Physical factors such as building materials, terrain, trees and nearby structures can produce large differences inside a mapped grid.

Change time, but keep records
Run the same test in the morning, at the busiest part of the day and in the evening. Note whether the problem is constant or appears only during congestion. A repeatable outdoor failure at several times is stronger evidence than one indoor result taken during a single outage.
Check the phone and account again
Confirm the exact handset variant, 5G-capable settings, current software, SIM or eSIM activation and plan eligibility. If another compatible phone on the same provider connects at the same place, the issue is more likely device-specific. If several devices fail together, check the provider’s outage information or contact support.
Separate a coverage problem from a performance problem
If the phone never attaches to cellular service, investigate coverage, compatibility or an outage. If it attaches to 5G but applications struggle, investigate signal quality, congestion, latency and indoor obstructions. The remedy differs: changing position may help a weak indoor signal, while congestion may require a different time, location or provider.

The FCC provides a formal challenge route for U.S. mobile coverage disputes. This is different from an ordinary speed check.
- Install and open the FCC Mobile Speed Test app described in the FCC challenge instructions.
- Use cellular data, not Wi‑Fi.
- Choose Challenge, rather than the app’s QuickCheck option.
- Test outdoors or in a vehicle between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. local time.
- Follow the app’s location and measurement prompts and submit the result through the stated workflow.
Indoor tests do not count as FCC challenge tests. QuickCheck provides an ordinary measurement and does not contest the map. Keep your own notes about address, date, time, device and conditions so that you can explain a persistent discrepancy to the provider or regulator.

8. Improve indoor calling and data after you identify the cause
Coverage maps discussed above primarily describe outdoor or modeled conditions. If outdoor tests work but an interior room does not, the building is part of the problem rather than evidence that the map is necessarily inaccurate.
- Try the same task near an exterior window or on an upper floor and compare the readings.
- Ask your provider whether your handset and plan support Wi‑Fi calling for indoor voice and text service. Ofcom identifies Wi‑Fi calling as an option users can discuss with their provider.
- Ask the provider about an approved indoor solution before buying equipment. Ofcom also discusses repeaters as one possible option, subject to its guidance; suitability depends on local signal and legal or technical requirements.
- Keep a record of where cellular service works and fails. This helps support staff distinguish a building-specific issue from an area outage.
Do not buy a signal repeater or a new phone merely because a map shows 5G. First establish whether the handset, service, outdoor signal and indoor conditions are compatible with the proposed remedy.
9. Compare providers at the places and times you actually use
When choosing between networks, do not compare national marketing percentages. Compare address-level evidence using the same procedure for each provider.

A provider that looks strongest on a regional map may not be strongest in your apartment, workplace or commute. Your repeated observations at the locations you care about are the decision evidence.
A practical decision checklist
- Address entered into the correct provider map.
- Mobile 5G layer selected and legend read.
- Independent FCC or Ofcom map checked where applicable.
- Exact phone model confirmed as compatible with the provider’s 5G network.
- Plan, SIM or eSIM and 5G eligibility confirmed.
- Wi‑Fi disabled during live tests.
- 5G indicator observed while cellular data was active.
- Outdoor and indoor locations tested separately.
- More than one nearby spot and more than one time tested.
- Repeated speed-test readings recorded with time and conditions.
- FCC challenge rules followed if submitting a U.S. map dispute.
Once these checks agree, you can make a defensible judgment: the map indicates likely coverage, your device demonstrates whether it can connect, and repeated cellular tests show whether the service is adequate for your actual use.
