How to Check Whether 16 GB of RAM Is Enough for Gaming—and When to Upgrade to 32 GB

Sixteen gigabytes can be enough for gaming when the games you play and your usual background apps fit comfortably in memory. It is not a guarantee for every game, mod, streaming setup, or multitasking workload. Consider 32 GB when real sessions repeatedly show memory pressure at the same time as performance problems—not simply because a game reports high RAM use. More capacity can improve headroom and, in some cases, frame-time consistency, but it does not guarantee higher average FPS or fix stuttering caused by another component.

How to check memory use while gaming

Use Windows Task Manager while running the game and the applications you normally keep open. Check during a demanding or problematic scene rather than relying on an idle reading, and repeat the check in representative sessions.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance > Memory. Note total memory use and available memory while you play.
  3. Select Processes to see which applications are using memory. This can reveal whether a browser, launcher, recording app, or other background program is a substantial part of the workload.
  4. Repeat the check in more than one typical session. Treat a single unusual reading as a clue, not a reason by itself to buy RAM.

Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends investigating consistently high resource use. Steam Support’s troubleshooting guidance says to try to keep at least 1,000 MB of available memory as shown in Task Manager. That is a Steam troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a universal pass/fail threshold for every game or PC.

How to tell whether RAM is causing the slowdown

A high memory percentage alone does not prove that RAM is the bottleneck. Look for a recurring pattern: memory is tight during the specific slowdown, and the slowdown appears under that same workload. Windows also reports committed memory, which combines physical RAM and page-file capacity; the page file can help accommodate memory commitments, but it is not equivalent to physical RAM performance.

  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8

Check other likely causes at the time of the problem. CPU or GPU load, disk activity, heat, drivers, graphics settings, and game-specific issues can also affect performance. If memory is not consistently constrained when the slowdown occurs, investigate those possibilities before expecting a RAM upgrade to help. Microsoft’s general guidance covers CPU, memory, and disk use as performance clues; it does not set a gaming-specific RAM threshold.

What 16 GB versus 32 GB benchmarks show

Results vary by game, test setup, and the rest of the PC. In its 2026 testing, PC Gamer found Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong ran similarly with 16 GB and 32 GB in the tested configurations. Stalker 2 and Escape from Tarkov showed better 1% lows with 32 GB in some scenarios. On an RTX 5070 test rig, PC Gamer reported an 11% improvement in Stalker 2 1% low frame rates with 32 GB. Its Escape from Tarkov test reported a 34% improvement in 1% lows, but used a training mode with AI bots; the article notes that live players can increase memory use. These are results from those test rigs and methods, not forecasts for every player’s PC.

Background workload and graphics memory can also change the picture. TechSpot describes cases where assets intended for graphics memory spill into system memory, as well as an author example in which listed background applications used 17.8 GB before a game was opened. That figure describes one workload, not typical usage across gamers.

Neither these examples nor the other cited guidance establishes that every gamer needs 32 GB or that the upgrade always improves performance. Microsoft’s general memory guidance is that “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.” That is not a gaming-specific promise.

Decide whether to keep 16 GB or consider 32 GB

What you observe Practical next step
Your usual games and background apps run acceptably, without recurring memory pressure tied to a symptom. Keep 16 GB for now; there is no performance problem here that establishes a need to upgrade.
Memory repeatedly approaches capacity during your actual workload, and symptoms recur at those times. Consider 32 GB. The benefit depends on the game and the rest of the PC; additional capacity provides headroom, not a guaranteed FPS increase.
The slowdown occurs while memory is not consistently constrained. Diagnose CPU, GPU, storage, heat, drivers, settings, and game-specific causes before buying RAM.
You play demanding modded games or run streaming and other memory-heavy applications alongside a game. Check memory during that combined workload. Consider 32 GB if repeated sessions show pressure associated with the problem.

Check compatibility before buying memory

Do not choose a kit from capacity alone. First identify the exact PC or motherboard model, then verify the supported memory generation, form factor, speed, maximum capacity, and current module configuration. Also check whether memory can be replaced or added: some laptops have soldered or inaccessible memory. Microsoft directs users to the device manufacturer for hardware-specific requirements.

When comparing compatible options, check the number of modules, access and replacement requirements, total cost, and warranty or return terms. Without the target PC model and verified compatibility information, a specific RAM kit cannot be recommended reliably.
