To check what ChatGPT may remember, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account, you may see a memory summary, saved-memory controls, chat-history reference settings, or options to manage memories. You can also ask ChatGPT, “What do you remember about me?” The controls and labels vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
Check your Memory settings
- Open Settings. In ChatGPT, open your account menu and select Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Memory. Look for the Memory controls available to your account. Depending on the current experience, labels may include Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
- Review what is shown. If your account offers a Memory summary, use it as a high-level view. Some experiences also let you correct the summary, highlight text and provide a correction, or inspect sources shown beneath a response.
OpenAI describes the memory summary as a high-level view that “does not necessarily include every detail or source that Memory can reference.” It is not a complete audit of every detail ChatGPT may use. For another way to check, ask ChatGPT directly: “What do you remember about me?”

Understand the different sources of personalization
Information that influences a response can come from more than one place. Checking or deleting one source does not necessarily affect the others.

| Saved memories | Information saved separately from the chat where it came from. Deleting that chat alone may leave the saved memory in place. |
| Reference chat history | When available and enabled, ChatGPT can draw relevant information from past conversations. What it finds useful to reference may change over time. |
| Custom instructions | A separate source of personalization; changing Memory does not necessarily change these instructions. |
| Files and connected apps | Depending on your account, relevant files in Library or content from a connected app may also be used. |

Remove information from the places it may be stored
If you want information removed rather than merely excluded from a future response, check each place it could exist. The exact controls depend on what your account shows and which sources you use.

- Remove the saved memory: use the available Memory or Manage controls to delete the relevant saved item.
- Delete the chat where you shared it: removing the source conversation is a separate action from deleting a saved memory.
- Check other chats: the information may also appear in regular or archived conversations. Delete relevant chats if you want those source copies removed.
- Check files: delete relevant files from Library if they are a source of the information.
- Check connected apps: disconnect an app if it is the source, and review any relevant content or access associated with it.
- Review other personalization: check Custom Instructions and any other applicable settings for the same information.
OpenAI says deleted-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging, and that memory deletions or updates may take time to propagate. Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days; the original chats remain unless you delete them. Know what each privacy control changes

When asking ChatGPT not to use something is not enough
Telling ChatGPT “don’t mention this again” or asking it not to use a detail can affect future personalization behavior, but it does not erase the underlying chat, file, email, or other source. If your account provides a Memory summary or saved-memory controls, use those to correct or delete the memory itself, then remove the source material separately where appropriate.
