If you are asking, “How can I see what data TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, or another app has collected about my child?” the most reliable answer is to use the child’s account with them, request the platform’s official data export, and inspect the original files before changing settings or deleting anything. An export can reveal far more than the public profile: contacts, device identifiers, location, viewing history, inferred interests, and records of activity.
Start a dated log, read the app’s privacy policy and controls, download the account archive, and then decide what to restrict, delete, or request formally. The process below explains what to look for, how the major apps handle exports, and where a parent’s legal rights and the platforms’ technical limits matter.

Begin with a documented, child-involved review
Work with the child whenever that is safe and practical. A joint review reduces surprises, helps the child understand privacy choices, and avoids treating an export as something to obtain secretly. If there is a safeguarding concern, preserve the relevant evidence first and involve an appropriate professional or authority.
Before opening settings, create a simple record. Write down:

- the app name and current version or web service used;
- the username, profile URL if one exists, and the account’s age setting;
- the email address or phone number linked to the account;
- the date and time of the review;
- which parent or guardian is making the request; and
- any other account, device, or family member that may be connected.
Save screenshots of important privacy settings before changing them. Menus and defaults can change, and a dated record shows what the account looked like when you requested the data.
Read the policy and the in-app controls together
The privacy policy describes categories, purposes, sharing, retention, and legal bases or consent. The settings screen shows which choices are available on that particular account. Read both: a toggle may control future collection without removing information already stored, while a policy may describe processing that has no visible switch.
Request the official archive before deleting
Use only the app’s own export or account-information feature. Request the broadest categories and the longest date range the service offers, then save the original ZIP or file without editing it. Make a second working copy for inspection. If you delete messages, posts, or the account first, the resulting archive may no longer contain records your family needs.

What to look for in a child’s data
A profile page is only the public-facing portion of an account. The Federal Trade Commission’s children’s privacy materials treat several less-visible items as personal information, including persistent identifiers, photos, audio, and geolocation. Check each category below in the export, policy, and settings.
Identity, contact, and profile fields
- Real name, display name, username, date of birth, age setting, email addresses, phone numbers, and profile biography.
- Profile photographs, avatars, linked accounts, school or city details, and any verification information.
- Account creation date, changes to credentials, security questions, and records of identity verification.
Content the child supplied
- Posts, comments, direct messages, group conversations, replies, reactions, saved items, drafts, and deleted-item records when retained.
- Photos, videos, live-stream material, captions, hashtags, voice notes, and audio extracted from uploaded media.
- Contacts, followers, friends, blocked accounts, address-book matches, and invitations.
Device, network, and login information
- Device model, operating-system version, browser, app version, language, advertising or device identifiers, and persistent identifiers.
- IP addresses, approximate network location, login and logout times, session history, security events, and the devices used.
- Cookies, pixels, software-development-kit events, or other identifiers described in the policy.
Location and activity signals
- Precise or approximate location, location history, geotags, and location inferred from an IP address or nearby signals.
- Search terms, videos or stories watched, scroll and interaction events, accounts viewed, purchases, and inferred interests.
- Ad preferences, audience or demographic categories, recommendations, and other profiles the service creates from observed behavior.
Connections and disclosures
- Connected games, music, shopping, single-sign-on, or other third-party services.
- Vendors, analytics providers, advertising partners, moderators, or other recipients described in the policy or export.
- Data shared when the child interacts with another person’s content, a public post, a link, or an embedded service.
Separate what the child entered from what the service observed or inferred. A stated interest, a watched video, and an advertising category about the child are different kinds of records and may have different controls or retention periods.

Requesting a data export on major apps
Export menus change by country, device, account age, and app version. Use the current official help instructions if the labels on your screen differ. Keep the request confirmation and the notification email with your review log.
TikTok
- Open Profile.
- Tap Menu ☰, then Settings and privacy.
- Choose Account, followed by Download your data.
- Select the information categories and file format, then tap Request data.
- Return to Download your data and use the download control when the archive is ready.
TikTok says preparation may take a few days and that the download is available only for a limited period. The service also warns that some recent data may be absent and that information affecting another person’s privacy may be excluded. Its help page notes that the newest 24–48 hours of some categories may not appear, so do not treat a newly requested archive as a complete record of yesterday’s activity.
Snapchat
- In the app, open Settings and choose My Data, or sign in through Snapchat’s account website.
- Select the categories and date range you want.
- Confirm the notification email address.
- Submit the request and wait for the email containing the download link.
- Download and preserve the ZIP archive before its link expires.
A Snapchat export can include login and account information, public and user profiles, Snap history, saved chats, Memories, friends, location, and search history. Snapchat says retention varies by type of information, so older or deleted material may no longer be available. Select the broadest date range offered if you are investigating a long-running account.
Instagram and other services
For Instagram and another social app, look in Settings or Accounts Center for Privacy, Your information, Access your information, or Download/Export. Follow the service’s current help page for the exact labels and file choices. The FTC provides links to parental-control information for Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, but those controls do not necessarily expose every private message or every internal record.
If an app offers both an online viewer and a downloadable archive, use both. The viewer can make a category easier to understand; the archive is the durable copy to store and analyze.

| Service | Where to start | Examples of archive content | Timing or availability caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Account → Download your data | Categories selected by the account holder; activity and account information included in the requested file | Preparation may take a few days; download remains available for a limited period; some recent data and information affecting another person’s privacy may be excluded, including the newest 24–48 hours for some categories |

Store and inspect the archive safely
Treat a child’s export like a sensitive case file. It may contain private conversations, the details of other children, location history, and security information.
- Preserve the original. Keep the downloaded ZIP or file unchanged. Record the download date, the account, and the filename.
- Use a secure location. Store it in an encrypted drive or a trusted, access-controlled account. Avoid shared family computers, public cloud links, and automatic photo backups.
- Make a working copy. Extract or convert only the copy. Do not upload the archive to an unverified “privacy checker,” data broker, browser extension, or unknown analysis service.
- Redact before sharing. Remove other children’s names, phone numbers, message content, faces, and locations before giving a file to a school, counselor, lawyer, or support worker.
- Keep an access log. Note who opened the archive, what was copied, and where each copy is stored. Delete temporary extracts when the review is complete.
Build a category log
A spreadsheet makes a large export manageable. Use one row per category or data field and capture:
- the file name or screen where you found it;
- whether the child supplied it, the service observed it, or the service inferred it;
- the stated purpose;
- the legal basis or consent language, where provided;
- the retention period or deletion rule;
- recipients, vendors, or third parties named;
- the sensitivity level; and
- the action available, such as an opt-out, deletion control, correction request, or formal access request.
Mark location, contacts, voice or biometric media, school details, and persistent identifiers as sensitive. Flag anything that could reveal a child’s routine, home, school, medical situation, or relationships.
What to do after the review
Reduce collection where the app allows it
Turn off unnecessary location access, contact syncing, personalized advertising, and off-platform activity sharing. Review each device’s operating-system permission as well as the app’s own switch; disabling a setting in one place may not change the other. Recheck after an app update or a new login.
Delete content or the account only after preserving needed records
If the family needs evidence of harassment, fraud, an unsafe contact, or a billing dispute, save the relevant export files and screenshots first. Then delete individual posts, messages, media, or the account using the app’s controls. Deleting a visible item may not erase backups, legal holds, fraud-prevention records, or copies held by another participant.

Use a formal request when the controls do not answer the question
Submit an access, deletion, correction, or consent-withdrawal request to the operator when the archive is incomplete or the app offers no suitable control. Keep:
- the exact request and date sent;
- the identity-verification information requested and the method used;
- the platform’s confirmation number or case reference;
- the response, files, and stated deadline; and
- any follow-up and the date it was sent.
A platform may need to verify that the requester is the parent. Do not send more identification than the service’s official process requires, and use the same authenticated account or support channel through which the request was initiated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.U.S. rights for children under 13
In the United States, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies to services directed to children under 13 and to general-audience services that have actual knowledge they are collecting information from a child under 13. COPPA is not a universal global age rule; outside the United States, the applicable age threshold, rights, and response deadlines depend on local law.
When COPPA applies, parents may have the right to review the information collected, have it deleted, withdraw consent, and stop further collection or use. The operator may require reasonable verification that the requester is the parent. A parent’s request does not automatically grant access to another person’s private information, which is one reason an export can omit material involving another user.
In a January 2025 FTC press release, FTC Chair Lina M. Khan said, “The updated COPPA rule strengthens key protections for kids’ privacy online.” The rule and the service’s own procedures determine how a particular request is handled; the statement is not a guarantee that every app supplies the same fields or deadline.

Why an export is not a complete forensic record
An archive is a snapshot produced for an account-holder request, not an investigator’s full database dump. It can omit information because of timing, retention rules, privacy protections for another person, technical limits, or a category that the service does not expose to users.
Snapchat’s varying retention periods mean that older or deleted material may be gone. TikTok identifies limited download availability, exclusions involving another person’s privacy, and missing recent data in some categories. Other services may apply different rules. Record exactly what the platform says was excluded rather than assuming the absence of a file proves the event never occurred.
For a serious safety, legal, or criminal matter, preserve the original archive and device evidence, avoid altering the account unnecessarily, and seek qualified legal or safeguarding advice. Do not attempt to bypass account security or obtain another child’s data.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use these criteria when comparing apps
If your child uses more than one service, compare the services using the same questions instead of assuming that similarly named controls work the same way:
- Which categories are disclosed, and are inferred interests or persistent identifiers included?
- Can the parent select categories and a date range, and is the result a ZIP, a set of files, or an online viewer?
- How long does preparation take, how long is the download available, and what recent data can be missing?
- What deletion, correction, consent-withdrawal, and retention controls are documented?
- Can the child or parent restrict precise location, contact syncing, personalized ads, and off-platform activity?
- Which vendors, advertisers, analytics providers, or other recipients are named?
- What identity verification is required, and does the process protect other users’ information?
- Do parental controls show activity without exposing private message content?
Record the answer for each app on the same dated spreadsheet. That makes changes visible when a service updates its policy, adds a setting, or changes the export format.
