There is no single screen that shows everything an AI assistant knows about you. What it keeps sits in several separate layers: conversation history, saved memory, model-improvement settings, connected apps, and backend retention. Each layer has its own control, and switching one off does not touch the others. This guide gives you a repeatable audit for ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Claude, based on the providers’ own published guidance as of October 2026.
The short answer: audit six layers, not one setting
Work through these in order. Turning off training is not erasure, and a memory summary or an export is not a full inventory of everything the provider holds.

- Confirm the account and context. Note whether you are signed in, whether the account is personal or an employer or school workspace, and whether you are on web or mobile. Settings and export options can differ by plan, region, age and administrator controls.
- Review conversation and activity history. Look for saved chats, archived or project chats, imported conversations and public or shared links.
- Review memory separately. Check saved memories and the “information you asked the assistant to save.” Edit or delete what you do not want, or turn memory off.
- Review model-improvement settings. Decide whether eligible future content may be used to improve the provider’s models.
- Inspect connected apps. Revoke access you no longer need.
- Request an export, then read the retention terms. Understand the difference between disappearing from your history and being removed from backend systems.
What does ChatGPT remember about me?
Where the controls are
OpenAI points users to Settings > Data controls for the model-improvement choice, data export and related controls. Memory lives under Settings > Personalization. What you see depends on sign-in state, plan and workspace.

With Improve the model for everyone off, new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, but the chats can still sit in your history. OpenAI explicitly separates memory personalization from model-training controls, so turning one off says nothing about the other.

Memory needs its own check. OpenAI states: “Deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory saved from it.” (OpenAI Help Center, Privacy Center in ChatGPT.) A memory summary is only a high-level view and may leave out details. So inspect the saved memories themselves, their sources where the interface shows them, and your chat history as three separate places.
Temporary Chats
While a chat is temporary, it does not appear in history, does not create or update memories and does not help improve models. OpenAI says it may still be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat.

Deletion, export and feedback
- OpenAI says cleared consumer chats are deleted from its systems within 30 days. Exceptions include content already de-identified and disassociated from your account, and content that must be kept for security or legal reasons. Content may be stored on OpenAI and trusted service-provider systems in the US and elsewhere.
- Signed-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users can request a copy of their data and delete their account through self-service options. Managed-workspace users may have to go through their workspace owner.
- OpenAI’s Help Center notes that giving feedback on a response can make the associated conversation eligible for training even if you opted out. Check the live wording before relying on a setting for sensitive material.
How do I see what Gemini knows about me?
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice covers signed-in use. Signed-out use falls under the general Google Privacy Policy. The hub for most checks is Gemini Apps Activity, where you can:
- review and delete activity, including imported chats;
- change the auto-delete period;
- control some use of your activity for improving Google AI.
The same area links to separate controls for saved information, personalization, connected apps, Gems and Skills, and public links. Check each one, because the activity switch does not govern them. Gemini controls also do not change all your other Google settings, and deleting Gemini activity does not delete data saved in connected Google services.

Retention numbers to know
- The default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can choose 3 months, 36 months or indefinite.
- With Keep Activity off, or in temporary chats, Google still retains chats with the account for 72 hours. In its words: “Even if your Keep Activity setting is off, Google still uses your chats to respond to you and help protect Google, our users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers.”
- A subset of chats can be reviewed by humans. Reviewed chats, feedback and related data may be kept for up to three years, disconnected from your Google account.
How do I delete Claude chat history?
Anthropic says consumer Claude users can delete conversations from their dashboard. They disappear from the history view immediately and are automatically deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Exceptions are set out in Anthropic’s privacy and usage policies and include legal and policy-enforcement circumstances. This is a statement about general retention. It cannot confirm what happened to your particular account, so keep any confirmation the provider sends if you make a formal request.

Treat this as a comparison of what each provider publishes, not as a privacy ranking. These are the providers’ own statements, not an independent audit, and a “not stated” cell means only that the guidance reviewed did not address it.

What each control does not do
- A training opt-out limits use of eligible content for model improvement. It does not erase earlier conversations.
- Deleting a chat may leave behind a memory derived from it, and it does not remove copies in connected services.
- “Temporary” does not mean “never retained.” Both ChatGPT and Gemini describe short safety-related retention windows.
- An export shows what the provider includes for your account type. It is not proof that every internal record or derived personalization is in the file.
- Work, school and enterprise accounts may have different retention and administrator access. A policy page written for consumers may not describe your account.
Connected apps and shared links
Assistants can reach other services, such as mail, files and calendars, once you grant permission. Those services handle data under their own policies, so deleting assistant history does not remove what they hold. Review the connected-apps list on each platform and revoke anything unused. Also look for public or shared conversation links, which Gemini lists as a separate control, and remove any that should no longer be reachable.

Published policies describe general handling. If you need a personal response, such as confirmation that data was deleted or a full copy of what is held, use the provider’s export tool first. Then use its privacy-request or support process. Managed-workspace users should ask their administrator, who may control both settings and retention. Interfaces and policy wording change, and options vary by region, plan and age, so check the provider’s live pages before acting on any step here.
