How to Check Water-Quality Reports for Dissolved Oxygen Levels Near You

In the United States, the most reliable way to find dissolved oxygen (DO) near you is to combine three sources: EPA’s How’s My Waterway for a location overview, USGS Water Data for the Nation for monitoring-station records, and the EPA–USGS Water Quality Portal for discrete sample results. Then check the station, date and time, depth, units, method, and data provider before deciding whether a number is unusually low. A single reading is not a complete assessment of a river, lake, estuary, or stream.

Use the right source for the question you have

Each national database answers a different part of the local water-quality question. Start with the source that matches your goal, then use the others to verify details.

Source Best use What to verify
EPA How’s My Waterway Get a public-facing overview of nearby waters and reported conditions. The underlying agency, monitoring site, date range, and source record behind any summary.
USGS Water Data for the Nation Locate monitoring stations and inspect continuous, daily, field-measurement, or discrete-sample records. Station identity, location, responsible agency, data category, period of record, and whether current observations exist.
Water Quality Portal (WQP) Search discrete water-quality results from federal, state, Tribal, local, research, and public contributors. Parameter name, units, sample date and time, station, collecting organization, and quality or validation status.
State, Tribal, or watershed agency Fill gaps when national portals have no records, old records, or unclear site coverage. The agency’s sampling design and the local criterion that applies to your waterbody.

The EPA describes the Water Quality Portal as a cooperative service built from EPA’s Water Quality eXchange, USGS, and other contributors. Its page reported more than 430 million water-result records from over 1,500 organizations when accessed in 2026. Those figures are dynamic portal counts, not permanent or independently audited totals. The USGS landing page states that it contains more than 135 years of water data and more than one million monitoring locations; those are also counts stated on the page at access and can change.

Step 1: Get a local overview in EPA’s How’s My Waterway

  1. Open How’s My Waterway and enter a city, ZIP code, address, or waterbody name. If the map offers several matches, select the actual river, stream, lake, or estuary rather than a nearby administrative location.
  2. Open the waterbody summary and note which agency supplied each item. The tool combines information from state, federal, Tribal, local, and other organizations, so a summary may combine observations made at different stations and dates.
  3. Look for links or references to the underlying monitoring locations and source records. Record the station identifier, sampling date, parameter, unit, and provider before treating a summary value as a current DO result.
  4. If the overview has no dissolved-oxygen entry, do not infer that oxygen was normal. Move to the station and sample searches below; the waterbody may simply lack a record in that view.

How’s My Waterway is useful for orientation, but its overview is not a substitute for the underlying time series or sample record. A waterbody summary can describe conditions over a broader area than the site where an individual DO measurement was taken.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Step 2: Find a nearby station in USGS Water Data for the Nation

  1. Use the site search to look by political boundary or by a monitoring-location number if you already have one. Searching by county, state, or watershed can reveal stations that a town-name search misses.
  2. Open each plausible site and confirm its official site name, latitude and longitude, waterbody, nearby landmarks, responsible agency, and monitoring purpose. A station on a tributary or an upstream reach is not automatically representative of the main stem near your home.
  3. Review the data categories available at that site. USGS lists continuous, daily, field-measurement, and discrete-sample data, but a location may have only one category or may have no current observations.
  4. Check the period of record and the latest observation date. A station with a long historical record can still be inactive today.
  5. Open the dissolved-oxygen parameter, if present, and identify whether the record is a continuous sensor series, a scheduled daily value, an individual field measurement, or a discrete sample.
  6. Save the station number and the exact date/time of any value you plan to compare. Station identity is essential when you later search the Water Quality Portal or a state database.

USGS station pages can contain measurements collected by a partner agency. The responsible organization and method shown with the observation matter as much as the number itself.

Step 3: Search individual results in the Water Quality Portal

  1. Search by the waterbody, county, watershed, or station identifier. Narrow the map or geographic boundary until the results represent the reach you care about.
  2. Filter for dissolved oxygen and set a date range. Start with recent years, then widen the range if no result appears; the portal is a warehouse that can include historic samples as well as recent records.
  3. Inspect every returned row for the parameter name, result value, unit, sample date and time, depth or sampling position, station, and collecting organization.
  4. Distinguish a laboratory or discrete result from an in-situ field measurement and from a sensor time series. Do not average these categories together without understanding how they were collected.
  5. Check any available quality-control, approval, detection-limit, or validation fields. A provisional or unvalidated record should be labeled that way in your notes.
  6. Export or save the station and result identifiers so another person can reproduce the search. Portal contents and counts change as contributors upload or revise data.

The organization that collected a sample may be different from the organization that hosts the portal. Use the collecting organization’s documentation to understand its sampling schedule and quality procedures.

Step 4: Ask the local or Tribal agency when national records are incomplete

State, Tribal, county, municipal, and watershed programs may operate stations that do not appear promptly in national systems. Search the environmental or natural-resources agency for your jurisdiction and look for terms such as “water-quality monitoring,” “surface-water data,” “dissolved oxygen,” or “monitoring stations.” Contact the program when the national tools show no data, only very old data, or a site whose identity is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask four specific questions: Which station is closest to the reach in question? What depth and time of day are represented? Is the value a screening observation, a validated regulatory result, or a continuous record? Which designated-use criterion and assessment method apply in this jurisdiction? Because standards differ by state, Tribal authority, waterbody class, season, and species, a national search cannot supply the legally applicable threshold by itself.

How to read a dissolved-oxygen number

Check the parameter and unit first

Dissolved oxygen is commonly reported as a concentration in milligrams per liter (mg/L) or as percent saturation. They describe related conditions but are not interchangeable. Concentration tells you how much oxygen is dissolved in a volume of water. Percent saturation compares that concentration with the amount expected under specified temperature, pressure, and salinity conditions. Temperature, elevation or atmospheric pressure, and salinity change the relationship, so retain the unit and the environmental context with every value.

If a report shows both units, do not assume a simple fixed conversion. Compare readings using the same unit and, when possible, the same temperature, pressure, and salinity context. Use whichever metric the applicable local criterion specifies.

Identify exactly when and where the water was measured

DO changes over the course of a day and with depth. Aquatic plants and algae add oxygen through photosynthesis during daylight; respiration and decomposition consume oxygen continuously. As a result, concentrations are often lowest before dawn, before a new day of photosynthesis, and can be lower near bottom sediments where organic matter decomposes.

  • Time: A mid-afternoon grab sample can miss a pre-dawn minimum.
  • Depth: A surface value may not represent a poorly mixed bottom layer or deep pool.
  • Position: An observation in flowing, well-mixed water may differ from a backwater, wetland edge, or sediment boundary.
  • Weather and flow: Heat, storms, drought, discharge, and mixing can change oxygen conditions between sampling events.

For these reasons, record the sample time, depth, position, and whether the result came from a continuous logger, repeated schedule, or isolated observation. A single daytime surface reading describes that sampling event, not the full daily or seasonal range of the waterbody.

Understand broad EPA indicator values without treating them as universal law

EPA’s National Aquatic Resource Surveys indicator page states: “While each organism has its own DO tolerance range, generally, DO levels less than 5mg/L are considered stressful for fish and levels less than 3mg/L are too low to support fish.” These are broad indicator statements, not a single legal standard for every location.

  • Below 5 mg/L: generally stressful for fish, according to EPA’s indicator guidance.
  • Below 3 mg/L: generally too low to support fish, according to the same guidance.
  • Below 1 mg/L: hypoxic and usually devoid of life in the explanatory context supplied by EPA.
  • Below about 0.2 mg/L: often described as anoxic, meaning virtually no oxygen, in EPA’s 2021 factsheet.

EPA’s 2021 factsheet says DO can range from 0 mg/L to 12 mg/L or more. That range is descriptive, not a target for your site. Organisms differ in tolerance, and legal assessments can use a minimum, a daily average, a duration, a season, or a specified sampling frequency. Compare a result with the designated-use criteria and assessment method issued by the responsible jurisdiction.

Compare two reports or stations without creating a false match

When you have multiple records, use a consistent comparison worksheet. The table below shows the fields that determine whether two values are genuinely comparable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Field Questions to ask Why it changes the conclusion
Recency What are the sample dates, and is the station still active? Historic values may describe conditions that no longer exist.
Sampling pattern Is this a continuous series, daily value, field grab, or discrete sample? A time series can reveal minima that an isolated sample misses.
Time of day Were observations made before dawn, during daylight, or at different hours? Photosynthesis produces a predictable daily cycle.
Depth and position Are both results from the same depth, reach, and side of the channel? Stratification and sediment oxygen demand can create layers.
Units Are both reported in mg/L or both in percent saturation? Mixed units can make unlike values look directly comparable.
Method and quality status Which instrument or laboratory method was used, and is the record validated? Method, calibration, and qualification flags affect confidence.
Provider Which agency collected and approved each observation? Programs can use different schedules, methods, and quality rules.
Local criterion What designated use, season, minimum, duration, or frequency does the jurisdiction assess? Broad indicator values do not replace the applicable legal criterion.

Prefer a relevant time series or a set of measurements that captures daily variation over one isolated reading. Keep observed values separate from a formal regulatory assessment: a low observation may prompt investigation without, by itself, establishing a standards violation.

What to do when a result looks low

  1. Verify that the value is really dissolved oxygen, not a different oxygen-related parameter, and confirm the unit.
  2. Check the timestamp, depth, station, weather or flow context if available, and quality or validation flags.
  3. Look for neighboring dates or a continuous record to determine whether the value is a one-time dip or part of a recurring pattern.
  4. Compare the observation with the jurisdiction’s designated-use criterion and assessment procedure, not only with the broad EPA indicator figures.
  5. Report a suspected fish kill, odor, unusual color, or repeated low readings to the responsible state, Tribal, local, or watershed agency. Include the station, date/time, coordinates, photographs, and the data source.

A low number recorded before dawn or near decomposing sediment may have a different explanation from a low number measured in a well-mixed surface sample at midday. Context determines what follow-up is useful.

Using a dissolved-oxygen meter as a supplement

You do not need a meter to locate public reports. A dissolved-oxygen meter or test kit can provide a supplemental field observation when public data are sparse, but it does not turn a consumer measurement into an agency assessment or compliance result.

  • Follow the instrument’s calibration and verification procedure before sampling.
  • Record temperature, salinity or conductivity if the instrument uses them to calculate saturation, plus location, depth, date, and time.
  • Allow the sensor to equilibrate and avoid bubbles, stagnant pockets, or disturbing bottom sediment unless those are the conditions you intentionally want to study.
  • Repeat measurements at consistent times and depths if you are looking for a pattern.
  • Keep the instrument model, calibration record, method, and raw readings with your notes.

EPA publishes field-measurement and verification considerations for dissolved oxygen; its procedure carries an effective/publication date of April 23, 2025. No particular consumer model should be assumed suitable for compliance testing without the agency’s acceptance and a documented quality program.

Common search problems and fixes

The map finds the town but not the waterbody

Search the waterbody name, county, watershed, or a USGS monitoring-location number instead of relying on an address match. Confirm the reach on the station map before opening results.

There is a station but no dissolved oxygen value

Review the station’s available data categories and period of record. The site may collect flow or temperature only, may have discontinued DO monitoring, or may not yet have current observations. Search the Water Quality Portal and the responsible agency’s own database.

The newest result is several years old

Label it as historical, check whether the station is inactive, and ask the local or Tribal program about newer records. Do not present the old value as the current condition.

Two portals show different numbers

Compare station identifiers, sample times, depths, units, methods, and collecting organizations. The values may be valid measurements from different places or moments rather than a data error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The report uses percent saturation but the local rule uses mg/L

Locate the paired concentration, temperature, pressure or elevation, and salinity information if available. If the report does not provide enough context for conversion, ask the data provider which value should be used for the jurisdiction’s criterion.

A portal summary says “good” but a sample is low

Read how the summary was calculated and what period, stations, and designated uses it covers. A broad status label can aggregate several sites or indicators, while the sample represents one place and time.

A practical record-keeping template

For every value you save, capture these fields in a spreadsheet or note:

  • Waterbody and reach
  • Station name and identifier
  • Latitude and longitude, if provided
  • Collecting and publishing organizations
  • Parameter and unit
  • Value and any qualifier or detection-limit note
  • Date, time, depth, and sampling position
  • Continuous, daily, field, laboratory, or discrete-sample category
  • Method, calibration or validation status, and period of record
  • Applicable local criterion and source document

This record prevents the most common mistake: copying a number without the context needed to interpret it.
