A higher NPCI ceiling does not automatically raise your personal limit: the bank may impose a lower cap, and category-specific ceilings apply only to eligible payments. Whether your bank will increase an internal limit is a bank-specific decision.
Know which limit is stopping the payment
“UPI limit” can mean several different restrictions. Before requesting an increase, work out whether the payment is blocked by an amount cap, a usage cap, the payment category, a temporary account restriction, or another rule. These are not interchangeable, and changing one may not affect the others.

- Per-transaction amount: the maximum amount allowed in one payment.
- Aggregate amount: the total you may send within a defined period, such as a day.
- Transaction count: the number of payments permitted in a period, even if each payment is below the amount cap.
- Category or merchant eligibility: a higher ceiling may be available for a defined type of payment, but not for an ordinary transfer. Some categories also require an eligible, verified merchant.
- Bank or account restriction: a bank may set a lower internal cap or apply a temporary restriction to an account or transaction.
NPCI’s UPI ecosystem statistics glossary identifies amount, transaction-count and daily-amount excess among reasons a business payment may be declined. That is why a payment can fail even when its individual amount looks small enough: you may have reached a separate count or aggregate limit.
It helps to compare the restriction along two axes: what is limited (one payment, a day’s total, or the number of payments) and who or what set it (NPCI’s ceiling, the bank’s policy, payment-category eligibility, or a temporary account control). A bank review is relevant only if the bank-set internal cap is the obstacle. If the payment is above the ceiling for its type or the recipient does not qualify for a special category, asking for a higher personal cap will not make that transaction eligible.

UPI limits: network ceilings are not your personal allowance
NPCI sets overall ceilings for UPI, while member banks can apply their own internal limits within those ceilings. The cap available to a particular customer can therefore be lower than the published network maximum. The amount visible in a general UPI explainer is not proof that your bank will let you send that amount from your account.
NPCI’s UPI FAQ, accessed in 2026, gives ₹1 lakh per transaction for normal UPI payments. It also lists ceilings of up to ₹2 lakh for certain categories and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments. “Up to” is important: these are category ceilings, not a promise that every user, bank, merchant or transaction can use the maximum.
Other policy decisions cover higher ceilings for particular uses. RBI announced a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for tax payments through UPI in 2024; its press release describes that decision. RBI had also set a ₹5 lakh ceiling for payments to hospitals and educational institutions in a 2023 decision, described in its publication on higher UPI limits. NPCI’s 28 August 2025 circular covers specified additional categories aligned to tax payments at up to ₹5 lakh per transaction. For those covered categories, the circular says eligibility applies to verified merchants; banks retain discretion to set their own internal limits within NPCI’s ceilings. See the NPCI circular for its scope and wording.
These category ceilings are not interchangeable. A ₹5 lakh ceiling for an eligible tax payment, for example, does not mean an ordinary person-to-person transfer can be sent for ₹5 lakh. Likewise, the fact that a recipient is an organization does not by itself establish that a payment is a qualifying hospital, education, tax, IPO or Retail Direct Scheme transaction. The payment’s actual category and the recipient’s eligibility matter.
| Published limit | Scope and source | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| ₹1 lakh per transaction | Normal UPI, according to NPCI’s FAQ accessed in 2026. | Your bank’s account-specific cap, daily aggregate allowance or transaction-count limit. |
| Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction | Certain categories listed in NPCI’s FAQ accessed in 2026. | That an ordinary person-to-person payment qualifies. |
| Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments listed in NPCI’s FAQ accessed in 2026. | That this ceiling applies to other payment types. |
| ₹5 lakh per transaction | Tax payments, under RBI’s 2024 decision; specified additional categories under NPCI’s 28 August 2025 circular, subject to its category and verified-merchant conditions. | That every bank, user or merchant supports the full amount. |
| ₹5 lakh per transaction | Payments to hospitals and educational institutions under RBI’s 2023 decision. | That every payment to any organization qualifies as a hospital or education payment. |
| ₹1 lakh per day, presently | SBI-published figure for payments through SBI UPI, on the bank’s page last updated 4 February 2025. | A current limit for customers of other banks, or an assurance that SBI’s terms have not changed since that update. |
These numbers describe different sources and scopes: NPCI’s overall ceilings, RBI policy decisions for named categories, and a bank’s own published figure. Do not add them together or substitute one for another. For an actual payment, the relevant value is the one that applies to the selected account, transaction type and recipient under the bank’s current rules.
The SBI figure is a useful illustration of why a bank-specific number must stay bank-specific. SBI’s page last updated 4 February 2025 states a current daily amount of ₹1 lakh through SBI UPI. It is not a universal UPI allowance, nor does it establish the current daily or per-payment cap at another bank. When you compare a published limit with your own situation, check its date, owner, payment scope and whether it describes a per-transaction maximum or a period total.
How to check the limit that applies to your account
- Confirm the funding account. In the UPI app, check which linked bank account is selected for the payment. A different linked account may have different restrictions because its bank sets its own internal policy.
- Look in both relevant apps. Inspect the UPI app’s settings, linked-account details, payment or account-limit information, and any warning shown when you enter an amount. If you use the bank’s app, check its UPI or payment settings too. Menu names and paths vary; there is no single documented navigation path that applies across providers.
- Separate the payment type from its amount. Decide whether the transfer is an ordinary person-to-person payment or a category-specific transaction, such as a tax payment, IPO or payment to a hospital or educational institution. Do not assume a higher category ceiling applies just because the amount is within that ceiling.
- Check for a recipient or merchant condition. Some higher limits are tied to category eligibility and verified-merchant status. If the recipient is a business, ask whether it is set up to accept that type of payment; a category ceiling alone does not establish that the recipient qualifies.
- Review recent payment history and error details. If you have already tried the transaction, note the exact amount, date and time, selected account, recipient or payment category, and the app’s full error text. Check whether earlier payments may have used up a daily amount allowance or transaction count.
- Ask the account-holding bank if the cap remains unclear. Use support details in the bank’s official app or website. Ask for the per-payment maximum, aggregate daily amount, transaction-count restriction, any temporary restriction, and whether the bank accepts requests to review its internal UPI cap.
When checking an app, distinguish a limit displayed for a particular feature or payment type from the limit for the account’s ordinary UPI payments. A warning shown while entering an amount may identify a restriction, but it does not necessarily tell you whether the cause is the network ceiling, your bank’s policy, a merchant condition or a temporary account control. If the explanation is unclear, record the exact wording rather than guessing from the number alone.

NPCI says in its UPI FAQ that customers can raise a grievance or check the status of a UPI transaction through the UPI app of a participating bank. That is useful for a transaction-status problem; it does not mean every app offers the same way to inspect or change a limit.
How to ask your bank to review a limit
Contact the bank that holds the account selected for the payment, rather than assuming the UPI app provider alone controls the cap. Explain what you are trying to pay and ask the bank to identify the source of the restriction before you request a change. A useful first question is: “Is this a bank-set internal limit, an overall UPI ceiling, a payment-category restriction, or a temporary restriction on my account?”
- Give the bank the relevant details. Provide the selected account, intended amount, payment category and any decline message. For a failed attempt, include its date and time and the recipient type.
- Ask which limit applies. Request the per-transaction cap, remaining or total daily amount, and any transaction-count rule that affects your account. Ask whether the restriction is temporary and, if so, what condition or waiting period applies.
- If it is an internal cap, ask whether a review is available. Ask how the bank handles a request, what identity checks or documents it requires, and whether the reviewed limit would apply to one transaction or a broader allowance. Follow only instructions delivered through the bank’s official channel.
- Get the outcome and effective date confirmed. If the bank approves a change, confirm when it takes effect and whether it applies to the intended payment category. Do not retry a high-value payment on the assumption that a request has already changed the limit.
- If the bank says the cap cannot be changed, clarify the reason. Ask whether the payment exceeds an overall ceiling, fails a category or merchant condition, or is blocked by an account-specific control. Those restrictions may not be fixed by an internal-limit review.
There is no universal UPI limit-change form, app setting, turnaround time or guaranteed increase established across banks. NPCI’s 28 August 2025 circular explicitly leaves member banks discretion to set internal limits within its overall ceilings. A bank may consider a review, but it is not required by that circular to raise a customer’s cap.
In practical terms, the review request is a question to the bank, not a self-service entitlement. Ask what the current restriction is, whether it is within the bank’s control and what verification—if any—the bank needs. The sources do not establish a standard document list or a standard processing time, so do not rely on a promised timeline or a request route that applies to another bank. SBI’s published support pages are useful for SBI customers but should not be treated as instructions for another provider.

The payment is above the ceiling for its type
A bank cannot make a payment eligible for a category-specific NPCI ceiling merely by changing a lower internal cap. Confirm the applicable category and maximum first. If the payment is an ordinary transfer, a higher ceiling for tax, IPO, Retail Direct Scheme or another defined use does not convert it into an eligible transaction.
The merchant or payment category does not qualify
A business payment may have a different ceiling from a person-to-person transfer, and some enhanced categories require a verified merchant. Ask the recipient and your bank to confirm the payment classification. If the transaction is being treated as an ordinary transfer, entering the same amount under a special category may not be supported or appropriate.
You have reached a daily amount or transaction-count cap
Splitting one payment into several smaller payments may not help if the restriction is an aggregate amount or number of transactions. It could also create more failed attempts. Check the precise cap and remaining allowance with the bank rather than treating the per-transaction maximum as the only rule.

A temporary restriction is active
A newly set or reset UPI PIN can come with a temporary limit in some bank-specific circumstances. For example, SBI’s YONO article dated 27 June 2025 describes a first-24-hour ₹5,000 restriction for Android users and a different first-five-day rule for iOS users. This is an SBI-specific example, not a general UPI rule; check the bank’s current terms through its official support channel. The article is available on SBI YONO.
This example is a reason to ask whether a restriction is temporary, not to assume that the same cooling-period rule applies to every bank or phone platform. If you recently set or reset a PIN, tell the bank when it happened and ask what restriction, if any, applies to your account and when it ends. Do not confuse that temporary control with an ordinary daily cap or an overall NPCI ceiling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the correct support route for a failed payment
A limit question and a transaction-status dispute are related but different requests. If the payment was declined, first preserve the error message and transaction details. Ask the bank whether the decline corresponds to an amount, daily total, count, category, merchant or temporary account restriction. If money was debited or the transaction status is unclear, request transaction-status help or raise a grievance through the participating bank’s UPI app or official support route.
SBI illustrates one bank-specific route: it directs customers to UPI Payment History to check transaction status and raise a dispute on a particular transaction. Its UPI customer care page and UPI FAQ describe SBI-specific help. These instructions should not be treated as the menu path for other banks.
For a clear support request, keep the transaction facts together: amount, date and time, selected bank account, recipient or merchant type, category, and exact error text. For a status issue, also state whether the account was debited and whether the payment appears in the app’s history. This information helps separate a limit decline from a transaction that needs a status check or dispute. Use contact details on the bank’s official app or website rather than relying on an unverified phone number or message.

UPI Circle is a delegated-authorization feature with its own limits, described on NPCI’s UPI Circle feature page. It concerns a primary user authorizing a secondary user to make payments under the feature’s terms. It is not a method for raising the account holder’s ordinary UPI limit; check its separate rules if you are considering delegated access.
In other words, a feature designed to let another user make payments under delegated authorization is not a workaround for a cap on your own account. Treat its terms and limits as separate from the ordinary UPI payment ceiling and from any bank review request.

Practical checklist before retrying
- Verify the bank account selected to fund the payment.
- Identify whether the restriction is per transaction, daily aggregate, transaction count, category eligibility or a temporary account control.
- Confirm that the recipient and merchant classification support the payment category you intend to use.
- Record the exact decline message and payment details before contacting the bank.
- Use the account-holding bank’s official support channel to verify the live account-specific cap and ask whether an internal-limit review is possible.
- Retry only after the bank or app confirms the relevant restriction is resolved or the payment is within the applicable limit.
Keep the distinction between a published ceiling and your usable limit in mind throughout: an NPCI or RBI category maximum describes what may be allowed for a qualifying payment, while the bank’s live rules determine the cap on your selected account. If the bank cannot raise its internal limit, ask which other condition blocks the payment; if the issue is an overall ceiling or eligibility, changing a bank-set cap will not remove it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my UPI transaction limit?
Check the UPI app and the bank app linked to the account that will fund the payment. Look for UPI, payment, account-limit or restriction information; menu paths differ between providers. If the limit is not displayed, contact the account-holding bank through its official app or website and ask for the per-transaction cap, daily aggregate amount, transaction-count rule and any temporary restriction.
Can I increase my UPI limit in the app?
There is no universal app setting or limit-change form established across banks. Ask the bank holding the linked account whether the restriction is an internal bank-set cap and whether it accepts a review request. A bank can set internal limits within NPCI’s overall ceilings, and a higher network ceiling does not guarantee an increase to your personal allowance.
Is the UPI limit ₹1 lakh or ₹5 lakh?
NPCI’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, gives ₹1 lakh per transaction for normal UPI, with higher ceilings for specific categories: up to ₹2 lakh for certain categories and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments. Separate ₹5 lakh ceilings apply to named categories such as tax payments, and to hospital and educational institution payments under specified decisions. These are not general limits for every transfer; your bank may also set a lower internal cap.
Can I split a large payment into smaller UPI payments?
Splitting may not help if you have reached a daily aggregate amount or transaction-count limit, and it may create additional failed attempts. Check the specific restriction and remaining allowance with your bank. A per-transaction ceiling, a daily total and a count limit are different rules.
Does a higher category limit apply to any business payment?
No. The payment must fall within the applicable category, and some enhanced categories require a verified merchant. A recipient being a business or organization does not by itself establish eligibility for a higher ceiling. Confirm the payment classification with the recipient and your bank.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I do if a UPI payment was declined or its status is unclear?
Record the amount, date and time, selected account, recipient or payment type, and the exact error text. Ask the account-holding bank whether the decline reflects an amount, daily total, count, category, merchant or temporary account restriction. If the account was debited or status is unclear, request transaction-status help or raise a grievance through the participating bank’s UPI app or official support channel.
Does resetting my UPI PIN lower my limit?
A temporary restriction may apply in some bank-specific circumstances. SBI YONO’s article dated 27 June 2025 describes a first-24-hour ₹5,000 restriction for Android users and a different first-five-day rule for iOS users. This is an SBI example, not a general UPI rule; ask your own bank whether a temporary restriction applies and check its current terms.
The Bottom Line
Check the selected funding account, payment category, per-transaction cap, daily amount and transaction count before retrying. If the applicable limit is unclear, ask the account-holding bank to identify the restriction and whether it can review an internal cap. Higher NPCI or RBI ceilings apply only to eligible payment types and do not guarantee that your bank will allow the maximum.
