How to Check Travel Advisories and Entry Requirements Before Flying to the Gulf

To check travel advisories and entry requirements before flying to the Gulf, verify three things for every country on your route: your own government’s current travel advice, the destination government’s entry rules for your passport and trip, and your airline’s document and flight-status requirements. Check transit separately, especially if you may leave the airport’s international transit area.

Here, “the Gulf” means Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). There is no single Gulf-wide visa or safety rule: requirements depend on the country, your passport, your purpose and length of stay, and your itinerary.

Why check advisories, entry rules and flights separately?

These checks answer different questions. Your government’s travel advisory describes risks and may distinguish between regions within a country. The destination’s immigration authority sets the rules for entering that country. Your airline checks travel documents and provides operational information about your flight. Meeting an entry requirement does not guarantee admission, and an advisory is not a visa decision.

How to check before you fly

  1. Write down the complete itinerary

List every destination and transit country, airport, stopover and land-border crossing. Note whether you will stay airside, change terminals, collect and recheck baggage, or pass through immigration. Include your travel dates and planned length of stay. These details can change which entry rules apply.

  2. Read your own government’s travel advice for each country

Use the foreign ministry or equivalent authority for the country whose passport you hold or where you normally receive consular advice. Check the overall advice, any geographic warnings, safety and health updates, and the page’s update or review date. Do not assume advice applies uniformly across a country.

For example, UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice for Saudi Arabia distinguishes areas by distance from the Yemen border and warns that airports near the border may close temporarily. UK advice for Kuwait also describes possible flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures. These are route- and time-sensitive examples, not a risk assessment of every Gulf destination or every itinerary.

  3. Check the destination government’s entry rules for your own circumstances

Use the destination’s official immigration, foreign ministry or visitor-visa service. Check the rule for your passport nationality and type, residence if relevant, trip purpose, dates and intended stay. Confirm whether you need a visa in advance, can use an eVisa or visa on arrival, or qualify for visa-free entry; check application steps and whether approval must arrive before travel.

Official pathways are nationality-sensitive. Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs directs visitors to the Royal Oman Police eVisa service, while Visit Qatar presents visa options based on traveler details. A page written for another nationality is not a substitute for checking your own eligibility.

  4. Verify passport and supporting-document conditions

Check passport validity rules and any requirements for onward or return travel, accommodation evidence, insurance, health documents, customs declarations or medicines. Confirm the conditions on the relevant destination government page rather than treating a rule from another country as universal.

As limited examples, UK guidance for full British citizen passport holders says a passport must have six months’ validity for visits to Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. UK Qatar guidance says visitors staying more than 30 days must have health insurance from a registered provider. UK Oman guidance lists onward travel, accommodation and proof of travel health insurance. These examples apply to the travelers and destinations named; they do not establish requirements for every passport or every Gulf country.

  5. Check transit as a separate border question

Find out whether you will remain airside for the whole connection. A terminal change, baggage collection, overnight stay outside the transit area or other reason to pass immigration may mean you need permission to enter the transit country. Check the transit rules for your nationality and airport, even if your final destination has different rules.

The UAE government says travelers who are neither visa-free nor eligible for a visa on arrival need a pre-arranged transit visa if they intend to leave the airport. Its portal describes 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas, which require processing and approval before entry. Qatar publishes separate transit-visa information. These are country-specific examples, not a shared Gulf transit policy.

  6. Confirm the airline and flight status

Check your operating carrier’s document requirements for every flight, including any connecting flight on a different airline. Confirm the flight is operating and that the airport and route information remains current. If official travel advice flags possible airport closures, cancellations or airspace disruption, contact the airline before leaving for the airport. Schedules and approvals can change; do not treat a booking confirmation as proof that a route is operating.

  7. Keep records and repeat the checks

Save secure copies of your passport identity page, visa or travel authorization, booking details, accommodation evidence and insurance information. Keep the official advice and airline contact details accessible. Recheck the official pages shortly before departure and again after any change to your passport, route, dates or regional security situation.

How to use country-specific examples without applying them to everyone

Entry guidance often identifies the nationality it covers. UK entry pages cited here are for full British citizen passport holders; the U.S. travel advisory is for U.S. travelers. Use such pages for their stated scope, not as a proxy for your own passport rules.

For example, the U.S. Department of State’s UAE advisory, issued 17 September 2026, describes a 90-days-in-a-180-day-period visa-on-arrival allowance for U.S. passport holders. That allowance should not be generalized to other nationalities. Likewise, the six-month passport-validity examples in UK guidance are destination- and passport-specific, not a blanket Gulf requirement.

When should you check again?

Check while planning, after booking if any itinerary detail changes, and shortly before departure. Repeat the check if your passport changes, you add a stop, your airline reroutes you, or your dates or stay length shift. Revisit the relevant government advice if security conditions or official travel notices change; use the airline for current operational status.
