How to Check the Type of a Puppeteer Dialog

Listen for the page’s dialog event and call dialog.type() on the dialog object passed to the handler. It returns the dialog type, such as alert, confirm, prompt, or beforeunload.

Check a dialog’s type in Puppeteer

Register the listener before the page action that may open a dialog. The handler receives a Puppeteer Dialog object; call type() to inspect it, then accept or dismiss it so the page can continue.

page.on('dialog', async dialog => {
  const type = dialog.type();
  console.log(type);

  await dialog.dismiss();
});

The example dismisses every dialog after logging its type. Change the response according to the behavior your application needs.

What types can the handler receive?

Puppeteer’s PageEvent reference gives alert, confirm, prompt, and beforeunload as examples of JavaScript dialogs. The official Dialog reference documents type() as returning Protocol.Page.DialogType. The exact API reference can vary by installed Puppeteer release; consult the documentation matching your project version.

Choose a response based on the type

Use the type to make the response conditional. For example, accept a prompt with text, accept a confirmation, and dismiss other dialogs:

page.on('dialog', async dialog => {
  switch (dialog.type()) {
    case 'prompt':
      await dialog.accept('Example response');
      break;
    case 'confirm':
      await dialog.accept();
      break;
    default:
      await dialog.dismiss();
  }
});

accept(promptText) accepts optional text, but Puppeteer documents that the text has no effect unless the dialog is a prompt. Both accept() and dismiss() are documented ways to respond.

Read the dialog message or prompt default

dialog.message() returns the text displayed in the dialog. dialog.defaultValue() returns a prompt’s default value, and returns an empty string for dialogs that are not prompts. Use type() when you need to identify the dialog; an empty default value alone does not tell you whether it is a prompt.

Common issues

  • The handler does not run: attach it to the relevant page before triggering the action that opens the dialog. The event is emitted by the Page.
  • The page appears stuck: handle the dialog by calling accept() or dismiss(). Logging its type alone does not respond to it.
  • A prompt receives no entered text: pass the text to accept(text) and ensure the dialog type is prompt; the optional text has no effect for other types.
  • Your expected type annotation differs: check the API reference and types for the Puppeteer version installed in your project. The documented return type is Protocol.Page.DialogType.

If the task is to capture a website rather than handle a JavaScript dialog in your own Puppeteer flow, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API example is:
