Check the exact device’s input rating, then match it with a compatible power source: the voltage must meet the device’s requirements, and the source must be capable of supplying at least the specified current. Use the supplied adapter and cable when possible. A TV’s USB port may not provide enough power for a streaming stick, even if the connector fits.
Find the requirement for the exact model
Start with the device’s model number. Look for its power input on the product label, in the manual, or on the manufacturer’s official specifications or support page. Do not infer the rating from the connector shape or copy the requirement from a similar device.

Read the input as a voltage and current pair, such as 5 V, 1 A. Also check the manufacturer’s instructions about the adapter, cable, and supported power standard. USB devices do not all use the same rating, and some have compatibility requirements beyond a matching plug.

Compare the device rating with the power source
- Voltage: Match the voltage specified for the device, and follow any manufacturer-approved alternatives. A higher current capacity alone does not make an adapter with a different voltage suitable.
- Current: The power source should be capable of supplying at least the current the device requires, provided the adapter is otherwise compatible.
- Compatibility: Check the device maker’s guidance for supported adapters and power standards. Do not assume that an adapter is safe or compatible just because its label shows a familiar USB voltage.
Prefer the adapter and cable supplied with the device. If either needs replacing, use the model-specific replacement guidance rather than choosing by connector alone.

Google’s safety and regulatory material lists compatible adapter outputs for the documented devices, including 5 V DC up to 3 A and 9 V DC up to 2 A. Those are device-specific compatibility details, not permission to use any adapter with those ratings. Check Google’s safety and regulatory information alongside the device’s own instructions.
Why a TV USB port may not power a streaming stick
A USB port on a TV is not guaranteed to supply enough power for a connected streaming device. If the stick shows a low-power warning, treat it as an indication that its current power setup is inadequate—not as a reason to try an arbitrary adapter. Use the manufacturer-recommended wall adapter and cable for the exact model.

What to check when a low-power warning appears
- Connect the manufacturer-recommended adapter to a reliable wall outlet.
- Check that the power cable is fully seated at both the device and adapter ends.
- For the Google devices covered by its low-power guide, remove any USB-C hub or switch from the power path while troubleshooting.
- If the warning continues or the device behaves erratically, stop trying unrelated adapters and consult the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model.
For supported Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer devices, Google’s guidance says: “If a replacement is needed, the recommended adapter spec is 5V/1.5A.” Apply that recommendation only to the devices covered by Google’s guide.
