Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo check a quoted GST rate in India, first identify what is actually being supplied, use the GST Portal’s Search HSN Code utility to find a likely classification, then verify that classification against the current official rate notification and its conditions. A search result is a useful starting point, not a legally binding decision. Without details such as the exact item or service and transaction date, no particular rate can be confirmed.
How do I check the GST rate before paying?
- Describe the supply precisely. For goods, note what the item is made of, what it does, and relevant details such as packaging, intended use or whether it is sold as part of a bundle. For services, describe the service actually being provided rather than relying only on a broad label.
- Search for a likely HSN or service classification. On the GST Portal, go to Home > Services > User services > Search HSN Code. GSTN says this utility is available both before and after login. Search by HSN or by description; for a description search, select whether the supply is goods or services. The utility returns suggested code and description matches. GSTN’s advisory on the Search HSN Code functionality explains the tool and its search options.
- Compare the candidate descriptions. Don’t select the first result just because its wording looks familiar. Compare the technical and trade descriptions with the actual item or service, including details that distinguish it from similar supplies. GSTN says its results match the query against descriptions declared by taxpayers generating e-invoices, and that the output depends on the words entered. It describes the tool’s results as facilitative, not legally binding or legal advice. Read GSTN’s explanation of the search results and their limits.
- Check the current rate notification. Use the GST Council’s central tax rate notification listing to find the relevant entry and amendments. Read any exceptions, definitions and conditions that affect the exact classification and supply. The listing includes amendments through 2025 in the material reviewed; do not rely on an old rate chart without checking the notification applicable on your transaction date.
- Check the invoice’s tax components in context. The Government of India’s GST rates for goods and services listing explains that an inter-state supply uses IGST, while an intra-state supply uses CGST plus SGST or UTGST. Check the total tax rate as well as the split shown, taking the supply’s place-of-supply context into account.
As a quick cross-check, the Ministry of Finance has cited hotel, restaurant and footwear bills as examples where consumers can check the GST charged. That does not establish a single rate for every hotel stay, restaurant order or footwear purchase: the applicable entry and its conditions still matter. See the Ministry of Finance release on checking GST rates.

| GST Portal Search HSN Code | Finding likely code and description matches from a goods or services description | Convenient classification discovery; GSTN says the result is not legally binding or legal advice. |
| Current GST Council rate notifications | Checking the rate entry, amendments, exceptions and conditions | Use the applicable official notification to verify the rate for the transaction date and supply. |
| Qualified Indian GST professional | Resolving classification or notification questions that depend on transaction facts | Optional escalation when plausible classifications differ or conditions are difficult to apply. |
How can I tell whether the invoice split is plausible?
First distinguish the total GST rate from the way it is divided on the bill. For an intra-state supply, the listed components are CGST and SGST or UTGST; for an inter-state supply, the component is IGST. A bill showing a different split is not automatically wrong without considering the transaction’s place-of-supply context. If you cannot determine that context or the classification from the invoice and transaction details, ask the seller for an explanation before treating the charge as an error.

Seek qualified Indian GST advice if two plausible descriptions point to different rates, if the notification contains a condition you cannot confidently apply, or if the invoice and seller’s explanation do not resolve the classification. The GSTN search facility itself disclaims legal force, so it should not be treated as a binding ruling on a disputed supply.
