How to Check the GST Rate and Tax Charged on a Product or Service in India

To verify GST, identify the supply’s HSN (goods) or SAC (services), find the matching entry in CBIC’s official rate schedule or rate finder, then compare every tax component and the rupee amount on the invoice. A product’s everyday name is not enough: composition, use, heading, exemptions, conditions and the date of supply can change the applicable treatment.

What you are actually checking

GST verification has two separate questions:

  • Is the supply classified correctly? Goods use an HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) heading or subheading; services use a SAC (Service Accounting Code). The description, material, function, processing and other facts determine which entry applies.
  • Was the tax calculated correctly for that entry? The applicable schedule may show CGST and SGST or UTGST separately for an intra-State supply, IGST for an inter-State supply, and sometimes a cess. Check the combined treatment, not a single percentage copied from a search result.

GST is intended to tax value added through the supply chain, with the final consumer bearing the burden. CBIC explains this as: “In a nutshell, only value addition will be taxed and burden of tax is to be borne by the final consumer.” Read the overview in CBIC’s Know About GST.

Step 1: Read the invoice before searching a rate

Start with the document for the transaction you are checking. Use the exact wording printed by the supplier rather than a shortened shopping-list name.

  • Description of the goods or service: Note the model, grade, material, capacity, intended use, service type and any other qualifier.
  • HSN or SAC: Record the full code shown. A missing code is a reason to investigate, not permission to select a convenient rate.
  • Taxable value: This is the amount to which the displayed GST rate is applied. Check whether line-level values and any invoice-level adjustments are shown.
  • Tax columns: Look for CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and any cess. The invoice may show a percentage and an amount for each component.
  • Supplier identity: Check the supplier’s legal name and GSTIN. The CBIC guidance on tax invoices and the invoice, credit-note and debit-note rules explain the fields that can be required.
  • Place-of-supply particulars: These help determine whether the transaction is intra-State or inter-State and therefore which tax components should appear.
  • Reverse-charge indication: If the invoice identifies reverse charge, do not assume the supplier’s normal collection pattern applies; retain that indication when checking the treatment.

If the invoice has no code or the code does not describe what you received, keep the description, specifications, purchase order and supporting documents together. You will need those facts to test classification.

Step 2: Use the official GST rate finder and schedule

Start with the CBIC rate-finder method

CBIC’s 2017 GST Rate Finder announcement describes searching by a description or by HSN chapter or section and checking the rate charged. Enter the invoice description or code, then open the result that most closely matches the actual supply. The GST portal also provides an HSN search facility; use it as a practical way to locate a candidate code, then confirm the result against the official schedule.

Open the complete schedule entry

Use the CBIC GST Goods and Services Rates pages as the authoritative schedule reference. Do not rely on the short text shown in a search box. Open the relevant heading and read across the entire row or entry, including:

  • the heading, subheading or item description;
  • separate CGST, SGST/UTGST and IGST columns;
  • any compensation cess or other additional levy shown;
  • exemptions, exclusions, provisos and conditions attached to the entry; and
  • the notification or effective-date information that governs the supply date.

A result that says “18%” may represent 9% CGST plus 9% SGST/UTGST for an intra-State supply, or 18% IGST for an inter-State supply. It may also omit a condition that limits the entry to a particular material, use or transaction. Treat the result as a candidate until the full schedule has been read.

Step 3: Confirm the classification, not just the product name

Classification is the point at which many apparent GST errors begin. Two products that consumers call by the same name can fall under different headings because their fibre, ingredients, construction, function or other properties differ. A service label can be equally broad: the precise service performed and the applicable SAC description matter.

Use the invoice facts to test a candidate entry

  1. Compare the schedule’s exact description with the goods or service delivered.
  2. Check the HSN or SAC heading and any subheading against the code on the invoice.
  3. Match composition, material, processing, capacity, use or service outcome wherever the entry specifies one.
  4. Read exclusions and conditions. An entry can apply only when a stated requirement is met.
  5. Record the effective date and verify that it covers the date of supply, not merely the date you performed the search.

Why everyday names can mislead

CBIC’s GST Rates FAQs use sarees and dhotis to demonstrate this issue: the heading can depend on constituent fibre and other properties. “Saree” or “dhoti” alone therefore does not establish a rate. The same principle applies to a generic description such as “machine,” “consulting,” “repair” or “food item.” Ask what the supply is made of, does, or includes before choosing a code.

An official water-purifier example

The same FAQ lists filters or water purifiers under heading 8421 at 18%. That is a lookup example, not a universal rule for every product marketed as a purifier. Confirm that the item is covered by heading 8421 and that the current schedule and transaction date still support the treatment.

How to read GST components and calculate the amount

What appears in the schedule or invoice What it represents What to check
CGST The central component shown for an intra-State supply. Read it with the corresponding SGST or UTGST; do not treat it as the whole GST rate.
SGST or UTGST The State or Union Territory component shown for an intra-State supply. Confirm the applicable jurisdiction and add it to CGST to obtain the total GST component.
IGST The integrated component shown for an inter-State supply. Check the place-of-supply particulars and whether the schedule entry uses an IGST rate.
Cess, where listed An additional levy attached to particular goods or conditions. Check whether the entry imposes it and compare its amount separately.

Recalculate from the taxable value

For each line, apply the applicable percentage to the taxable value:

Tax amount = taxable value × rate ÷ 100

For example, if an eligible line has a taxable value of ₹10,000 and the complete entry requires 18% GST, the total GST is ₹1,800 and the invoice total before other adjustments is ₹11,800. If the transaction is intra-State and the entry is split equally in the invoice, the components would be ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST/UTGST. If it is inter-State, the invoice would ordinarily show ₹1,800 IGST instead. Use the percentages actually displayed in the applicable schedule and invoice; the example does not decide the classification or place of supply for your purchase.

Check rate and amount independently

  • Recompute each line’s rupee tax from its taxable value.
  • Add component amounts and compare the sum with the invoice’s total GST.
  • Check rounding at line and invoice level. A small difference can result from the supplier’s stated rounding method, but a material difference needs an explanation.
  • Verify that discounts, credits or other adjustments have not changed the taxable base used for the calculation.

Compare competing entries when more than one looks plausible

When the finder returns several results, do not select the first percentage. Make a side-by-side comparison using the facts that distinguish the entries.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Exact description Does the wording describe the actual goods or service, including composition, use or processing?
HSN/SAC heading Does the invoice code match the heading or subheading, and is a more specific subheading available?
Tax treatment What are the CGST, SGST/UTGST and IGST percentages? Is a cess listed?
Conditions and exemptions Are there value limits, material requirements, recipient conditions, exclusions or other footnotes?
Effective date Was this entry in force on the date the goods were supplied or the service was provided?

Choose the entry whose complete description and conditions fit the transaction, not the entry with the lowest rate or the most familiar wording.

Verify the invoice fields that affect the result

A rate can be correct while the invoice is still inconsistent with the transaction. Use CBIC’s tax-invoice flier and invoice rules as the references for the fields applicable to your transaction. In practical terms, compare:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • supplier name and GSTIN;
  • invoice number and date;
  • recipient details where required;
  • description, quantity or service particulars;
  • HSN or SAC;
  • taxable value and discounts or adjustments;
  • the CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and cess amounts and rates, if any;
  • place-of-supply information where relevant; and
  • the reverse-charge indication where relevant.

The exact fields vary with the transaction and the parties involved. Do not reject an invoice merely because a field that is irrelevant to that transaction is absent, but do not ignore a required field that affects tax treatment.

What to do when the code or rate looks wrong

The invoice has no HSN or SAC

Use the detailed description and supporting specifications to search the CBIC finder and schedule. Ask the supplier which classification and rate basis it used. Do not invent a code from a retailer’s category label or from a result for a superficially similar product.

The code does not match the item

Preserve the invoice, product literature, purchase order, photographs or service scope that show what was supplied. Ask the supplier to explain or correct the classification. A mismatch may be a clerical error, but it can also signal that a different schedule entry applies.

The percentage appears right but the amount is wrong

Recalculate from the taxable value, then check line-level rounding, discounts, credit notes and whether the invoice combines supplies with different rates. Compare each component separately rather than checking only the grand total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CGST and SGST/UTGST appear where IGST is expected, or vice versa

Recheck the place-of-supply particulars and the transaction facts. The component choice is not determined by the product name; it follows the applicable supply treatment. Ask the supplier to document the basis if the invoice remains inconsistent.

The schedule and an older invoice disagree

Check the date of supply and the notification or effective-date information attached to the schedule entry. GST rates and rules can change, so a current search cannot by itself prove what applied to an earlier transaction. Keep a copy of the version or notification you relied on.

Escalate an unresolved classification or overcharge carefully

  1. Preserve evidence: Keep the original invoice, payment record, product or service description, contract, correspondence and your calculation.
  2. Write to the supplier: State the invoice number, the HSN/SAC shown, the schedule entry you believe matches, the rate components and the numerical difference. Ask for the classification and rate basis rather than simply requesting a lower percentage.
  3. Request a corrected document when appropriate: If the supplier accepts that the invoice is wrong, ask what correction, credit note or replacement document is applicable to the transaction.
  4. Obtain professional advice for material disputes: Classification can depend on technical facts and transaction-date rules. A qualified Indian tax professional can assess those facts and the consequences.
  5. Use the relevant tax authority route: The appropriate authority and process depend on the supply, jurisdiction and issue. Confirm the current official channel for your circumstances rather than relying on an unverified complaint deadline or response promise.

A repeatable GST-check worksheet

For each invoice line, record the following before reaching a conclusion:

Field Your record
Invoice description and specifications Use the supplier’s complete wording.
HSN or SAC on invoice Record the full code or mark it missing.
Candidate schedule entry Note heading, subheading and exact description.
Conditions and exclusions Copy the requirements that decide whether the entry applies.
Supply date Use the date relevant under the transaction documents.
Taxable value Record the base before GST and applicable adjustments.
Expected components CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and cess, if listed.
Expected amount Recalculate each component and total.
Invoice amount Copy the amounts actually charged.
Unresolved question State what the supplier or adviser must clarify.

This record separates a classification question from an arithmetic question. You can then show the supplier exactly where the invoice differs from the applicable entry instead of arguing from a general product name.

Key cautions before you rely on a result

  • The CBIC rate finder is a search aid; the complete official schedule entry and its conditions control the conclusion.
  • A familiar consumer name does not establish an HSN, SAC or GST rate.
  • CGST plus SGST/UTGST is not the same invoice presentation as IGST, even when the combined percentage is similar.
  • Examples such as heading 8421 water purifiers at 18% illustrate the lookup process and must not be generalized to every product.
  • Rates and rules may change. Always align the entry with the date of supply and applicable notification.
