How to Check the GST Charged on a Food Delivery or Ride-Hailing App Bill in India

Open the order or trip receipt and check five things: the supplier’s legal name and GSTIN, the invoice or ticket date and serial number, the service description, the taxable value, and the GST rate and amount. Then match the service to the applicable CBIC rate entry. Food orders and rides do not automatically share one GST rate, and a platform’s combined “taxes” line does not prove that every fee is GST. If the document does not show enough detail to follow the calculation, request the tax invoice or an itemised tax breakup from the platform or supplier.

What a GST check should establish

A GST check is a document check, not a guess based on the final amount. You are trying to establish which service was supplied, who is identified as the supplier, what amount is taxable, which rate category applies, and how the tax amount was calculated.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Service: Decide whether the line relates to restaurant service, passenger transport, or another service supplied by the platform.
  • Supplier: Read the legal name and GSTIN printed on the invoice or ticket. Do not identify the supplier solely from the app’s consumer-facing brand.
  • Document: Confirm the date, invoice serial number where applicable, and the description of the supply. For passenger transport, a ticket can serve as the tax-invoice form when the applicable particulars are included.
  • Tax calculation: Look for the taxable value, rate and tax amount, rather than checking only the grand total.
  • Liability: A notified electronic-commerce service can make the operator responsible for paying GST under section 9(5). That liability rule does not by itself prove what every receipt line represents or whether a displayed amount is correct.

These checks apply to India’s GST system. A rule or rate used for another country cannot be substituted for the Indian invoice and rate provisions.

Step-by-step: check a food or ride receipt

1. Open the transaction document

From the order or trip history, open the receipt, invoice, tax invoice or ticket for the exact transaction. App menus change, so use the current order or trip-history controls shown in your account rather than relying on an old tap-by-tap guide. Save a PDF or screenshot if the app allows it, and retain the transaction date.

XKDOUS 2 Pack Invoice Books, 2-Part Carbonless Receipt Books
  • Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
  • Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
  • Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
  • 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
  • Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.

For passenger transport, CBIC’s invoice rules recognise that the tax invoice may include a ticket in any form, by whatever name called, subject to the other applicable particulars. A screen showing only a fare total is therefore not the same thing as a complete tax document.

2. Identify the supplier and invoice details

Read the document itself for the supplier’s legal name and GSTIN. Also check the invoice or ticket date, serial number where applicable, and the description of the service. If the platform separates restaurant charges from its own delivery or platform services, note which legal entity is shown against each line.

Do not infer the supplier from the vehicle, restaurant name or app icon. The invoice is the evidence of which entity made the documented supply. If the GSTIN or legal name is missing where you expected it, ask the platform or supplier for the tax invoice rather than filling in the information yourself.

3. Find the taxable value, rate and tax amount

Locate the amount on which GST was calculated, the applicable rate and the tax amount. Check whether the displayed tax equals the rate applied to the stated taxable value, allowing for the rounding shown on the document. If the receipt lists several taxable lines, inspect each line instead of applying one rate to the entire order or fare.

  • QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
  • 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
  • WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
  • ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
  • CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly

A final total can include amounts that are not identified as GST. Delivery, packaging, convenience, booking or other platform charges need transaction-specific treatment; there is no universal rule that every app fee is GST. The invoice particulars tell you what the supplier has identified and taxed, while the underlying facts determine whether that treatment is correct.

4. Classify the service

Compare the description on the document with the CBIC GST rate schedule. Restaurant service and passenger transport are different classifications. Passenger-transport entries also vary by the type of service and the conditions attached to the entry. A ride receipt cannot be checked by copying the rate from a food order, and a restaurant order cannot be checked by assuming the rate used for a taxi category.

5. Check the transaction facts

Record the order or trip date, place of supply information shown on the document, service or vehicle type, supplier identity and every line item. Rates and liability provisions can change, and a current rate page does not automatically decide a historical dispute. The transaction date and the actual service description are part of the check.

6. Compare the arithmetic

Where the document supplies a taxable base and a rate, calculate the expected tax and compare it with the printed amount. If the receipt uses separate central and state components, add the components and compare their total with the stated GST. Do not reverse-engineer a rate from the total when the taxable base is not disclosed; ask for the missing breakup.

7. Request clarification when the document is incomplete

Send the platform or supplier the order or trip number, date, amount paid and a copy of the receipt. Ask for the tax invoice or an itemised breakup identifying the supplier, GSTIN, taxable value, rate and tax amount. Keep the response with the original receipt. A request for clarification is appropriate when the display is broad or ambiguous; it is not a finding that the platform has necessarily breached an invoice rule.

Food-delivery bills: how to read the tax lines

Restaurant service is a category, not a label for every charge

CBIC’s GST Goods and Services Rates schedule includes a 5% entry for the described general restaurant-service category, subject to the conditions listed in that entry. That figure is a category-specific rate, not a blanket instruction to apply 5% to every item sold through a food-delivery app.

Start with the service description and supplier shown on the invoice. Determine whether the line is the restaurant service or a separate service supplied by the platform. A food order can display multiple charges, and the available material does not establish one universal GST treatment for every delivery fee, packaging amount, platform fee or other component used by every platform.

What to compare on a food order

  1. Check whether the restaurant or another legal entity is named as the supplier for the taxable line.
  2. Locate the GSTIN, invoice date and serial number, and confirm that the description corresponds to the service charged.
  3. Separate the restaurant-service line from delivery, packaging, convenience or platform lines.
  4. Compare the taxable value, rate and GST amount for each line with the relevant CBIC category and its conditions.
  5. If a single “taxes” amount covers several charges without a base or rate, request a tax invoice or itemised breakup.

Do not call the whole order “5% GST” merely because one restaurant-service entry in the schedule is 5%. The entry’s conditions and the classification of each supplied service still matter.

Ride-hailing bills: ticket, invoice and passenger-transport rates

A ticket can be the transport tax document

For passenger transportation, CBIC’s invoice rules state: “Where the supplier of taxable service is supplying passenger transportation service, a tax invoice shall include ticket in any form, by whatever name called”. Read the ticket or receipt for the other applicable particulars, including the supplier identity, GSTIN, date, service description, taxable value, rate and tax amount.

Passenger transport has multiple rate entries

The CBIC schedule contains several passenger-transport categories with different rates and conditions. One entry for passenger transport by radio taxi is listed at 5%, subject to its stated condition. That entry does not establish a 5% rate for every ride type, every vehicle, every fare component or every service sold through an app.

Documented service category Rate information in the CBIC schedule How to use it
General restaurant-service category described in the schedule 5%, subject to the listed conditions Apply only when the invoice and transaction fit that category and its conditions.
Passenger transport by radio taxi 5%, subject to the listed condition Check that the actual service is the radio-taxi category; do not extend the entry to every ride or fee.
Other passenger-transport categories Separate entries with different rates and conditions Use the entry matching the documented service and vehicle or service conditions.

Do passengers have to file GST returns?

No. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ states: “Customers availing services from taxi aggregators do not have to make any declaration or file any return. They are outside GST.” A consumer’s job is to retain and check the receipt, not to register for GST or file a return merely because a ride receipt shows tax.

The same FAQ says taxi aggregators may issue a ticket or tax invoice within one month of the service and cannot issue consolidated invoices under the guidance stated there. Because the FAQ text does not clearly expose a revision date, check for later amendments if a dispute depends on the current procedural position.

Who is liable for GST on an app-based ride?

Notification No. 17/2017-Central Tax (Rate), dated 28 June 2017, identifies specified passenger transport supplied through an electronic commerce operator for operator-level payment of GST under section 9(5), including passenger transport by radio taxi, motorcab, maxicab and motorcycle for intra-State supplies.

This is a liability mechanism. It tells you which party may be responsible for paying GST for a covered supply; it does not independently reveal the taxable base on your receipt, prove that a displayed tax amount is accurate, or turn every platform charge into GST. You still need the transaction’s service description, date, location and line-item breakdown.

How to compare two bills

If you are checking why two orders or rides show different tax amounts, compare the same fields rather than comparing only the totals.

Comparison point What to inspect Why it matters
Service type Restaurant service, passenger transport, or a separate platform service Different classifications have different rate entries and conditions.
Supplier and document Legal name, GSTIN, date, serial number, and whether transport is documented as a ticket or invoice The document identifies the supplier and supplies the particulars needed for verification.
Tax base and rate Taxable value, rate and tax amount for each line A different taxable base or rate can change the tax even when the final fare or order value looks similar.
Liability mechanism Whether a notified electronic-commerce service places payment responsibility on the operator under section 9(5) Liability is separate from the meaning of each receipt line.
Transaction facts Date, location, service or vehicle type and all line items General rules cannot decide a particular charge without the facts of that transaction.

What to do when the app shows only “taxes”

First, preserve the evidence

  • Save the receipt, ticket or invoice in its original form.
  • Record the order or trip number, date, pickup and drop-off information where relevant, and the amount charged.
  • Capture the screen showing the tax label and any separate fee lines.
  • Keep payment confirmation and any later revised invoice.

Then make a precise request

Ask customer support, the supplier or the invoicing contact for the tax invoice or itemised tax breakup for that transaction. Request the supplier’s legal name and GSTIN, invoice or ticket date and serial number, service description, taxable value, GST rate and tax amount. Explain that the current receipt combines the amount and does not let you identify the taxable base or rate.

Escalate with the transaction facts

If the reply does not explain the calculation, repeat the request with the exact line in dispute and attach the original document. A general statement that “GST is included” cannot validate a specific amount without the invoice and service facts. For a consequential dispute, check the CBIC material in force on the transaction date and seek qualified tax advice if the invoice remains unclear.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying one rate to every app charge: A restaurant-service entry or radio-taxi entry does not automatically cover delivery, packaging, convenience, booking or other platform charges.
  • Using the app brand as the supplier: Read the legal name and GSTIN on the document.
  • Checking only the final total: Verify the taxable value, rate and tax amount for each relevant line.
  • Treating section 9(5) as a receipt calculation: Operator liability does not establish the tax base or prove the displayed amount.
  • Assuming every ride has the radio-taxi rate: The schedule contains multiple passenger-transport entries and conditions.
  • Filing a GST return as a passenger: CBIC’s FAQ says taxi-aggregator customers do not have to make a declaration or file a return.
  • Relying on an old screenshot or menu guide: App navigation and invoice displays can change; use the document generated for the transaction.

When a receipt can be treated as checked

You have a usable GST check when the document identifies the supplier, date and service; gives the applicable invoice or ticket particulars; separates the taxable value, rate and tax amount; and the service classification and conditions fit the CBIC schedule in force for the transaction date. If any of those links is missing, the responsible next step is to obtain the invoice or breakup rather than infer the answer from the grand total.

For a disputed historical charge, keep the original receipt and the platform’s response, verify the rules applicable on that date, and obtain professional tax advice when the amount or consequences justify it.
