How to Check the Air Quality Where You Live

In the United States, the quickest way to check local air quality is to enter your ZIP code or city at AirNow.gov or use the free AirNow mobile app. The result shows a current Air Quality Index (AQI), the pollutant driving that reading, health guidance, and—when available—a forecast. If wildfire smoke is present, switch to AirNow’s Fire and Smoke Map for a more detailed view of PM2.5, smoke plumes, nearby sensors, and trends.

The number is a nearby reporting-area estimate, not a guaranteed reading from your exact address. Use the AQI category, primary pollutant, forecast, and your own sensitivity together when deciding whether to exercise, work outdoors, or change plans.

Which air-quality tool should you use?

Use the standard AirNow location lookup for an everyday answer such as “What is the AQI near me?” Use the Fire and Smoke Map when wildfire smoke is affecting your area or when you need to inspect readings from several nearby monitors. A home PM2.5 monitor can add information about conditions inside your residence, but it is optional; public tools are the sensible starting point.

Tool Best for What it shows Important limitation
AirNow website and standard AQI view A quick local reading and daily planning Current AQI, primary pollutant, activity guidance, and forecast information The location represents a reporting area and may not describe every street or home
AirNow Fire and Smoke Map Wildfire smoke and local PM2.5 investigation Smoke plumes, PM2.5-focused readings, trends, forecasts where available, and clickable monitor or sensor markers Markers can come from different device types and data pathways, so nearby values may differ
Indoor PM2.5 monitor Conditions inside one residence A reading at the monitor’s location No general accuracy ranking or model recommendation is established here

Check your current AQI on the AirNow website

  1. Open the official service. Go to AirNow.gov. It is a free public information resource.
  2. Enter a location. Use the location search to enter your ZIP code, city, or state. A city search leads to the nearest city with available data. If no reporting city is found within 50 miles, AirNow sends you to a state page listing cities that do have data.
  3. Confirm the reporting area. Read the city or area name attached to the result. Treat it as the nearest available reporting location, not as a measurement taken at your front door.
  4. Read the current AQI and color category. Do not stop at the color. Identify the pollutant named as primary and read the associated activity advice.
  5. Check the forecast. If you are deciding about a later run, sports practice, commute, or outdoor event, use the forecast rather than assuming the current value will persist all day.
  6. Recheck when conditions can change quickly. Smoke movement, wind, temperature, traffic, and sunlight can change pollutant levels. A single morning reading is not a guarantee for the afternoon.

What happens when your exact town is not listed?

Use the nearest reporting area shown by the service and note the distance and geography. AirNow’s search behavior is designed to provide the closest available city, with a state list as a fallback when no city with data is within 50 miles. Rural residents, people near a state border, and locations separated from a monitor by hills, valleys, or a large body of water should be especially cautious about treating that value as street-level truth.

Use the AirNow mobile app for repeated checks

The official AirNow app automatically displays the current AQI for your local area or another location you select, and it lets you store multiple areas for quick reference. That is useful if you divide time between home, work, school, or a travel destination. Search for the location inside the app, select the reporting area you intend to follow, and open the saved location whenever you need an updated reading.

The app and website answer the same basic question, but the app is more convenient for repeated checks and notifications or quick access during an outdoor activity. Neither one should be interpreted as a direct measurement at every address in the selected city.

Understand the AQI number before changing your plans

The U.S. AQI is a communication scale. AirNow’s currently displayed bands are:

AQI Category How to use the category
0–50 Good Air quality is generally satisfactory, although an unusually sensitive person may still notice effects from a particular pollutant.
51–100 Moderate Air quality is generally acceptable; people unusually sensitive to the named pollutant should consider whether to reduce prolonged or intense exertion.
101–150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups People in sensitive groups may experience health effects and should follow the pollutant-specific advice; the general population is less likely to be affected.
151–200 Unhealthy More people may experience health effects. Consider reducing exposure and changing strenuous or lengthy outdoor activities.
201–300 Very Unhealthy Health-risk warnings affect a larger share of the population; avoid or substantially limit outdoor exertion according to the official guidance.
301 and above Hazardous Health warnings are for everyone. Follow public-health instructions and avoid unnecessary exposure.

These bands are not a universal “safe” cutoff for every person. A child with asthma, an older adult with heart or lung disease, a pregnant person, an outdoor worker, and a healthy adult doing intense exercise can face different risks at the same AQI. The primary pollutant matters because ozone and particle pollution affect people differently, and someone sensitive to another pollutant should not ignore that pollutant merely because it is not the one currently setting the dial.

Why the primary pollutant matters

AirNow’s standard dial reports whichever has the highest AQI at that time among ozone and particle pollution. The page can also provide information about other pollutants. Read the named pollutant and the accompanying steps to reduce exposure instead of treating the AQI color as a complete medical assessment.

Check wildfire smoke with the Fire and Smoke Map

When wildfire smoke is affecting your air quality, AirNow specifically directs users to its Fire and Smoke Map. The map is built for a different question from the standard dial: not only “What is the AQI for this reporting area?” but also “Where is smoke located, how is it moving, and what are nearby PM2.5 readings doing?”

  1. Open the Fire and Smoke Map from AirNow. Start at AirNow.gov and select the Fire and Smoke Map.
  2. Locate your area. Zoom to your town and inspect the map markers around it rather than relying on a single broad color.
  3. Check what each marker represents. The map can include official permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and low-cost or crowdsourced sensors. Read the marker information so you know which type you are viewing.
  4. Focus on PM2.5 during smoke events. Fine particles are a central concern in wildfire smoke. Compare the current reading with the map’s trend information and any available smoke outlook.
  5. Look for movement and timing. A plume approaching from one direction, a rising trend, or a forecast deterioration can matter more to a later outdoor event than the value recorded several hours earlier.
  6. Apply the official protective guidance. Use the map to understand conditions, then follow the AQI category and activity recommendations for deciding whether to postpone, shorten, or move an activity indoors.

Why the map and the standard dial can disagree

The regular AQI view uses monitors selected by state, local, and tribal agencies. The Fire and Smoke Map adds more data sources, including permanent and temporary monitors and crowdsourced sensors. Different instruments, locations, update schedules, and processing methods can produce different values a few miles apart. A standard dial may also fail to reflect smoke well when there is no nearby PM2.5 monitor or when another pollutant currently has the higher AQI.

That difference does not automatically make one reading “wrong.” It means the readings answer slightly different geographic and measurement questions. Use the marker’s source and location, look for a pattern across nearby readings, and avoid presenting any one sensor as a guaranteed measurement for your exact address.

Use current readings and forecasts for different decisions

A current AQI describes recent measurements that have been processed into the index. It is the right starting point for deciding what to do in the next few hours. A forecast is a prediction for a future period and is more useful when you are planning a later activity.

Your decision Information to check Reason
Go for a walk now Current AQI, primary pollutant, and sensitive-group guidance Immediate exposure depends on conditions being measured now
Schedule an afternoon practice Current reading plus the day’s forecast and smoke trend Pollution can rise or fall after the current observation
Plan a weekend event during smoke season Forecast outlook, map trends, and a recheck closer to the event Longer-range conditions are less certain and can change
Decide whether smoke is reaching your neighborhood Fire and Smoke Map markers, PM2.5 trend, and plume movement A citywide dial may hide local differences

AirNow describes NowCasts as algorithms that relate hourly monitor readings to AQI. That processing helps turn recent observations into a current index, but it does not turn the result into a forecast or an exact address-level measurement.

Why air-quality readings vary from one place to another

  • Pollutants are unevenly distributed. Ozone can be higher downwind of an urban area, while particle pollution can concentrate near smoke, traffic, or a local source.
  • Weather changes the picture. Wind can move a plume quickly; stagnant air can allow pollution to build; sunlight affects ozone formation; rain can remove some particles.
  • Topography matters. Valleys, mountains, coastlines, and urban heat patterns can separate one neighborhood’s air from another’s.
  • Monitors are not everywhere. A location may be represented by a monitor many miles away, and the nearest monitor may sit in a different environment.
  • Devices and data pathways differ. Regulatory monitors, temporary instruments, and low-cost sensors have different designs, operating conditions, and update processes.
  • The index selects the highest relevant pollutant. The standard dial can be driven by ozone or particle pollution, so a reading focused on one pollutant may not match a sensor displaying another.

For these reasons, AirNow’s map areas and location summaries should be treated as approximate. They are highly useful for exposure decisions, but they do not promise a reading from every home.

An indoor PM2.5 monitor can be useful when your question is specifically about one room or residence—for example, whether indoor particle levels rise when outdoor smoke arrives or fall after filtration and closed windows. It measures at its own placement, so the result may not represent another room or the outdoor air. The available information here does not establish a consumer-model accuracy comparison or identify one model as universally superior. Treat a home monitor as additional context, not a replacement for official public-health guidance.

Common problems and how to handle them

The search returns a city that is not nearby

Check the distance and use the closest reporting area available. If no city with data is within 50 miles, AirNow’s state page lists reporting cities. For a rural or geographically complex location, supplement the city result with the Fire and Smoke Map and nearby markers.

The AQI looks good, but you can see or smell wildfire smoke

Open the Fire and Smoke Map and inspect PM2.5 readings, temporary monitors, low-cost sensors, smoke plumes, and trends. The standard dial may not capture smoke well without a nearby PM2.5 monitor, or another pollutant may currently be setting the AQI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two nearby sensors show different values

Read the source and timestamp for each marker. Different device types, locations, and update methods can legitimately produce different readings. Look for the broader trend and use the official category and health guidance rather than choosing a value solely because it is lower.

The current reading is acceptable, but the forecast is worse

Use the forecast to reconsider a later activity and check again closer to the start time. Current conditions and predictions answer different time-horizon questions.

You are outside the United States

AirNow’s tools are the main example here and are designed around the U.S. AQI. AirNow also provides some air-quality information for Canada and Mexico, but readers elsewhere should use the official environmental or public-health service for their country or region. Look for its local index, pollutant explanation, forecast, and activity guidance.

A quick routine for every outdoor decision

  1. Open the official local service and search your ZIP code, city, or reporting area.
  2. Record the current AQI category and the primary pollutant.
  3. Read the activity guidance that applies to your health status and the planned intensity of the activity.
  4. Check the forecast if the activity is later than the current observation.
  5. During wildfire smoke, open the Fire and Smoke Map and inspect PM2.5, nearby marker types, plume direction, and trends.
  6. Recheck when weather, smoke movement, or the timing of your activity changes.
