Check compatibility at three levels before you buy: the exact game, every launcher or online service it needs, and the exact handheld model’s SteamOS support status. SteamOS uses Proton to run many Windows games, but compatibility is title-specific. Open each game’s Steam page, read the Deck Compatibility details instead of relying only on the badge, verify multiplayer and external-launcher requirements separately, then confirm the hardware against Valve’s current SteamOS FAQ.
This process tells you whether the games you actually play will work on the device you are considering. It also prevents two common mistakes: treating “Verified” as a guarantee of identical performance and treating improved compatibility on an AMD handheld as proof that Valve officially supports that model.

What SteamOS compatibility actually means
SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer translates many Windows games so they can run through SteamOS, but it does not create one universal result for the entire Steam catalog. Each title can behave differently because of its input model, text and interface scaling, launcher flow, video playback, digital-rights checks, networking and anti-cheat configuration.
A game can launch and still be a poor handheld experience. A small-font strategy game may technically run but be difficult to read on a small display. A title may accept a controller in most scenes yet require a keyboard for one menu. An online game can open normally while its anti-cheat service prevents a match from starting. Valve’s rating system is designed to expose some of these practical issues, not to promise that every game performs identically to its Windows version.

Separate the question into three checks:
- Game compatibility: Does the specific title receive a current Steam Deck rating, and what do the details say about controls, readability and required interactions?
- Service compatibility: Does the game depend on another launcher, account system, digital-rights check or anti-cheat component that must work on SteamOS?
- Hardware support: Is the exact handheld officially supported by SteamOS, or is it merely an AMD-based device that may benefit from broader compatibility improvements?
Do not answer any of these questions from the operating system’s name alone. A SteamOS handheld can be excellent for one library and unsuitable for another.
Start with the games you will actually play
Make your purchase list before comparing handheld specifications. Include games you expect to play during the first few months, not only the titles already installed. Compatibility is most useful when it is tied to a real decision such as “Can I play this multiplayer game with friends?” rather than to a general estimate of how large the Steam library is.
Record the important dependencies
For each game, note whether it is:
- A single-player Steam title with no outside account or launcher.
- A multiplayer game where anti-cheat or a particular networking service is essential.
- A game that opens a separate launcher before starting.
- A title that requires a publisher account, subscription, sign-in token or other external service.
- A game whose controls or text presentation are especially important to you, such as a keyboard-heavy simulation or a menu-dense role-playing game.
Mark your “must play” games separately from titles you would enjoy only if they happen to work. One unsupported must-play game can change the right operating-system choice, while an unsupported game you never intend to launch should not decide the purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude non-game requirements
If you expect to install a launcher, mod manager or other desktop software, write that down as a separate requirement. Valve says SteamOS desktop mode allows users to install other launchers and software. That general capability does not establish that a particular launcher, login flow, game or anti-cheat setup will work reliably. Treat each dependency as an item to verify rather than assuming that desktop mode solves it.

Check the Steam store rating for every title
Steam’s store search and game pages provide the fastest first-pass check for Steam Deck compatibility. Perform the check for every important game instead of inferring compatibility from its publisher, engine or release date.
- Open the game’s Steam store page. Search for the exact edition you intend to buy or play. Deluxe editions, free-to-play versions and separate multiplayer clients can have different requirements.
- Find the Steam Deck compatibility section. Read the displayed rating and open its details. The badge is a starting point; the explanation contains the practical reason for the classification.
- Look for the issue category. Pay attention to controller support, display readability, text entry, launcher interaction and whether the game works as expected from start to finish.
- Repeat the check for multiplayer titles. A favorable rating does not replace a separate check of the game’s current online service and anti-cheat behavior.
- Use the store’s Deck Compatibility filters when browsing. Steam provides filters including Verified and Playable, which are useful for finding candidates but do not remove the need to inspect an individual title’s details.
When you already own the games, use the Steam Deck library view as a second check. Steam Deck users can view and filter their library by compatibility rating, making it practical to audit a large collection before buying another device. Store information and library information can change, so use the current listing rather than an old screenshot or forum post.
Read what each rating is telling you
Valve’s labels describe a tested experience against criteria for handheld use. They are not a performance ranking and they do not tell you the frame rate, battery life or visual quality you will receive on every handheld.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Rating or state | What it establishes | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The title meets Valve’s current Steam Deck criteria for the tested experience. | Whether its performance, battery demand, display size and control feel suit your particular device and preferences. |
| Playable | The game can work on Steam Deck but may require a manual adjustment or contain an issue that does not fit the Verified criteria. | The detail explaining the adjustment: a keyboard prompt, a launcher step, a readability issue or another interaction you must handle. |
| Unsupported | The title does not meet the criteria used for a supported handheld experience at the time of classification. | Whether a later update changed the situation and whether the specific failure affects a feature you need, especially multiplayer. |
| No rating shown | There is no current Valve rating to rely on for that title. | Launcher, control, display and online-service behavior through the game’s own documentation and current user reports; treat the result as unconfirmed. |
Why a game can be Playable instead of Verified
Valve’s historical explanation of the program, published March 4, 2022, used a controller-input example: a game that mostly displays controller glyphs but occasionally asks for a keyboard key could be classified as Playable rather than Verified. That label does not necessarily mean the game is unusable; it tells you that the interaction falls short of the stricter criteria.

Why an apparently minor fault can produce Unsupported
The same explanation described a largely functional game that crashes in an optional minigame as an example that could be classified Unsupported under the criteria discussed in that update. This is a historical illustration of how the rules can be conservative, not a current classification for any particular title. Read the present-day detail attached to the game you care about.
Treat ratings as time-sensitive
Valve described the ratings this way in its March 4, 2022 announcement: “Whenever we talk about compatibility rating numbers, we emphasize that this is just a snapshot of a single moment, and that ratings change over time.” Developers can fix an issue, introduce a new launcher or alter anti-cheat behavior; Valve can also update the classification. Check your must-play games again close to the purchase date instead of treating a past rating as permanent.
Check launchers, accounts and anti-cheat separately
A Steam store rating is not a universal certification for every service connected to a game. If a title opens another launcher, requires a separate account or uses an anti-cheat system, verify that component on its own terms.

External launchers
Valve’s SteamOS guidance says desktop mode can be used to install other launchers and software. That tells you the operating system permits this type of installation; it does not promise a polished console-style experience for every launcher. Confirm whether the launcher can install, sign in, update and start the game through the control scheme you plan to use.

Account and digital-rights flows
Some games require a browser window, one-time code, recurring sign-in or an account different from your Steam account. These steps may be manageable in desktop mode but inconvenient from the handheld interface. Identify them before purchase, especially if the handheld will be used away from a keyboard and mouse.
Multiplayer and anti-cheat
For an online game, successful installation is not enough. The service must allow a SteamOS client to join the relevant servers, and its anti-cheat configuration must function in the mode the developer supports. A game can therefore be a poor fit even when its single-player executable launches. Give multiplayer must-plays a higher verification threshold than optional single-player titles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Confirm whether the exact handheld is officially supported
Game ratings answer whether a title is suitable for the Steam Deck experience; they do not answer whether every handheld can officially run SteamOS. Check the current SteamOS FAQ for the precise model name and variant.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Hardware status in Valve’s current FAQ | How to interpret it before buying |
|---|---|
| Steam Deck | Valve identifies Steam Deck as an officially supported SteamOS device. |
| Legion Go S | Valve identifies Legion Go S as an officially supported SteamOS device. Confirm that the listing you are considering is the exact Legion Go S model, not a similarly named variant. |
| Other AMD-powered PC handhelds | Valve says compatibility with other AMD-powered handhelds has improved. That statement indicates broader compatibility work, not official support for every model. |
“AMD-powered” is therefore not a substitute for checking the support list. A device can have compatible processor graphics and still lack an officially supported software image, complete driver integration or a documented recovery path. If official SteamOS support is a purchase requirement, choose a model explicitly named by Valve rather than inferring approval from its processor.

Support status and game status are independent. An officially supported device can still have an Unsupported must-play game, while an unofficially supported AMD handheld may run some games successfully but leave you responsible for installation, updates and troubleshooting.
Compare handhelds using the checks that affect compatibility
Once you have audited your games and verified the models, compare devices on the factors that can change the outcome. Valve’s published material supports these decision checks; it does not provide a benchmark ranking of competing handhelds.
| Decision axis | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Official SteamOS status | Is the exact model named in Valve’s current supported-device information? | Official support gives you a clearer software baseline than a general statement about improved compatibility. |
| Your game list | What are the current ratings and details for every must-play title? | Compatibility is title-specific; one critical game can outweigh a favorable overall library impression. |
| Outside services | Do any games require an external launcher, account flow or anti-cheat service? | These dependencies can fail or become inconvenient even when the Steam installation itself works. |
| Controls and display | Do the rating details reveal keyboard prompts, small text or other interactions that conflict with your use? | A technically working game may still be impractical on a handheld. |
| Operating-system preference | Do you want SteamOS’s console-oriented Steam interface, desktop-mode flexibility, or another operating system’s software compatibility? | The choice affects how much setup and manual maintenance you are willing to perform. |
Do not substitute a specification comparison for this compatibility work. More processing power cannot automatically fix a launcher login, an unsupported anti-cheat service or a control scheme that assumes a full keyboard.
A purchase-time workflow that avoids surprises
Use this sequence for a final decision:
- Write down every game you consider essential and flag multiplayer or outside-service dependencies.
- Open each current Steam store page and record the Deck rating plus the explanatory details, not just the color or badge.
- Use the Steam library compatibility filter to find gaps in a collection you already own.
- For every game with an external launcher, account or anti-cheat requirement, verify that component independently.
- Check Valve’s current SteamOS FAQ for the exact handheld model. Do not generalize from another model in the same product family.
- Decide whether a manual desktop-mode step is acceptable for your routine. If a launcher or sign-in flow is central to your use, count that setup as part of compatibility.
- Recheck the highest-priority games and the hardware support page immediately before ordering, because labels and supported-device information can change.
If all of your essential games have suitable current details, their online services are confirmed, and the handheld’s support status matches your requirement, you have a defensible compatibility decision. If one essential dependency remains unconfirmed, treat the purchase as a risk rather than converting an optimistic assumption into a guarantee.
