You can also open your profile’s Games list to see the recorded hours. Before asking for money back, note those hours, verify the purchase date in your account history or receipt, and compare both facts with Steam’s refund rules. Do not launch the game again until you have recorded the figure, because another session can change the total Steam evaluates.
What Steam playtime tells you before a refund request
Steam’s playtime figure is the account-level time recorded for that title. It is the number Steam uses when applying its normal refund test, not a stopwatch you start when opening the refund form. The total can include time spent playing online, playing offline, and using the game through Steam Family or another shared-library arrangement. Offline sessions do not create a separate counter that can be ignored later.

That makes the hours useful, but not sufficient by themselves. A refund decision also depends on when the purchase was made. A low playtime total bought too long ago may fall outside the standard guarantee, while a recent purchase with several hours recorded may do the same. Check both pieces of information before you submit anything.
Playtime is an account record, not a quality judgment. It does not explain why you want a refund, whether a technical problem caused the hours, or whether local consumer law gives you a separate remedy. Use it as one factual part of the request.

The normal Steam refund test
Valve states that it will issue a refund when a title is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than two hours. The two-hour figure includes online, offline and shared-library playtime. This is Steam’s standard rule for games and software, as described by Valve Support at help.steampowered.com.
Both conditions matter together. Being inside the purchase window does not cancel the playtime limit, and being under two hours does not extend the purchase window. Treat the displayed hours and the purchase date as two separate checks.
Steam’s wording says “less than 2 hours,” so exactly two hours is not the same as being below the stated threshold. The normal guarantee also does not promise approval when either condition is missed. You can still send a request for review, but Steam decides those cases individually.
Method 1: check the game from your Library
The Library view is usually the fastest route because it starts with the title you are considering for a refund and keeps the recorded time beside the game controls.
- Open the Steam client and choose Library.
- Find the game in your library list. Use the search box if the list is large.
- Select the title to open its game page.
- Read the accumulated playtime shown near the game’s controls. Write it down or take a screenshot before starting the title again.
- Leave the game closed while you check the purchase date and prepare the support request.
This view answers the immediate question—how much time Steam has recorded for the selected title—without requiring you to navigate away from the game page. It is tied to the account currently signed in to the client, so confirm that you are using the account that made the purchase or supplied the shared-library access.

Method 2: check the profile’s Games list
Your Steam profile provides a second way to view recorded hours. It is useful when you are already reviewing your account profile, when the Library list is filtered, or when you want to locate a title by browsing all games associated with the account.
- Open your Steam profile.
- Choose Games to display the account’s game list.
- Locate the title and read the playtime shown for it.
- Record the number before launching the game or changing accounts.
The profile list is a lookup view; it does not replace checking the purchase record. Use the account that owns the transaction, and pay attention to whether the title’s time reflects use through a shared library. If the two Steam views appear different, preserve screenshots of both and explain the discrepancy to Support rather than guessing which number will be used.

For a single known game, start in Library. For an account audit, the profile list can be quicker. Neither screen independently establishes eligibility because the purchase date is a separate fact.
Check the purchase date without losing the playtime record
After recording the hours, verify when the transaction occurred. Steam’s account purchase history and the receipt email are the two practical places identified for this check.
- Open your Steam account’s purchase history, or search the receipt email for the transaction.
- Identify the purchase date for the exact game edition or transaction you intend to return.
- Compare that date with the day you are making the request. Use the date attached to the purchase, not the date you first installed or launched the game.
- Keep the order details available while you open Steam Support, especially if several purchases have similar names.
If a bundle, gift, or shared-library title makes the ownership history unclear, select the transaction that appears in the account’s purchase records and describe the situation in the support form. Do not assume that a library entry alone proves when you paid for it.

Submit the request through Steam Support
Once you have the hours and purchase date, use Valve’s support site at help.steampowered.com. The support process is account-based, so sign in before selecting the transaction.

- Open the purchase-support flow.
- Select the game or transaction you want Steam to review.
- Choose the refund option presented for that purchase.
- Briefly state the reason for the request. Keep the explanation factual: identify the title, mention relevant technical or purchasing circumstances, and say if you are asking for a manual review because the normal limits may not apply.
- Submit the form and retain the confirmation or ticket details for your records.
The form’s availability and choices are determined by the selected purchase. If the game is not listed, recheck that you signed into the purchasing account and that you selected the correct support category. Avoid submitting a request for a different transaction simply because its title looks similar.
What to do when the hours or date exceed the standard limits
Steam still allows a user to submit a request for review when a game has more than the normal playtime allowance or the purchase is older than the normal window. In that situation, the standard eligibility guarantee no longer applies. Approval is discretionary, so write a clear explanation instead of presenting the request as automatically qualifying.
More recorded time than expected
First, stop launching the title and preserve the current figure. State why the total may not represent ordinary play—for example, an application left running, troubleshooting sessions, or shared-library use—only if that is what happened. Steam can decide whether the circumstances justify an exception; the explanation does not change the recorded counter.
Older purchase
Give the actual purchase date and explain why you are requesting help now. A late-discovered defect, an access problem, or another specific circumstance is more useful to Support than a general statement that you changed your mind. Do not claim that the normal guarantee covers an older transaction.

Both limits exceeded
You may still send the request, but make the exceptional circumstances easy to find and include the relevant order information. Treat any refund as a case-by-case decision.

- Counting only online sessions: Steam’s stated total includes offline play, so reconnecting later does not erase those minutes.
- Ignoring shared-library use: Time accumulated through shared access is included in the two-hour calculation.
- Launching the game while checking: A new session can add to the recorded total before you submit the request.
- Using the wrong account: A family member’s or secondary account’s Library view may not match the transaction you need to return.
- Relying on memory: The purchase date in account history or the receipt is more reliable than an installation date or recollection.
- Assuming an explanation overrides the rule: Reasons matter most when Steam is exercising discretion; they do not turn an out-of-window request into a guaranteed refund.
A careful pre-submission checklist
Complete this list before opening the refund form:
- The correct Steam account is signed in.
- The game’s Library playtime has been recorded.
- The profile Games list has been checked if you need a second view or the Library entry was difficult to locate.
- The title has not been launched again during the check.
- The exact purchase date is available from account history or the receipt.
- You know whether offline or shared-library sessions contributed to the total.
- Your reason is short, accurate and specific to the transaction.
- You understand that requests outside Steam’s normal conditions receive no automatic approval.
EU and UK consumer rights
Steam’s voluntary refund policy is not the only possible source of rights. Readers in the European Union and the United Kingdom may have statutory consumer protections that operate separately from Valve’s standard 14-day and two-hour test. The result depends on the country, the type of digital purchase, the consent given to begin performance, the defect alleged and other circumstances.
If you rely on local law, identify your country or jurisdiction in your request and describe the concrete problem. Do not assume that another reader’s outcome applies to you, and consider qualified local consumer-law advice when the amount or dispute is significant.
When a playtime check does not answer the whole question
A recorded total cannot by itself establish whether a game is defective, whether a payment was unauthorized, or whether a statutory cancellation right survives for your transaction. Those are different support or legal questions. Choose the support category that matches the problem and provide the transaction details Steam requests.

Likewise, a missing or unexpected hour total is not proof that Steam lost data. Confirm the account, title and transaction first; then describe the mismatch in the ticket with screenshots or receipt information if available. Support can evaluate account records that a Library page cannot explain.
Practical examples
Recent purchase with 45 minutes recorded
Record the 45-minute figure, verify the purchase date, and submit the title through the purchase-support flow. The facts appear to fit the normal playtime and date conditions, but Steam still processes the request through its support system.
Recent purchase with 2 hours and 10 minutes recorded
Do not launch the game again. Submit a request if you want Steam to consider the circumstances, but explain why you believe an exception is appropriate. The normal guarantee does not cover the recorded total.
Purchase made more than 14 days ago with 30 minutes recorded
The low playtime does not restore the expired standard window. Give Steam the actual purchase date and ask for a discretionary review if you have a specific reason.
Shared-library use before your own purchase
Record the total shown for the account and mention the shared-library history in your explanation. Steam’s stated calculation includes shared-library playtime, so do not subtract those sessions yourself.
Bottom line for a reliable refund check
Use the Library title page first, confirm the number in the profile Games list when useful, and stop playing while you document it. Then verify the transaction date and send the request through Steam Support. Steam’s normal guarantee is tied to a purchase made within 14 days and playtime below two hours; requests outside either condition can still be reviewed, but no approval is promised. Online, offline and shared-library sessions all belong in the total, and EU or UK statutory rights may require a separate legal assessment.
