How to Check Steam Game Requirements and Controller Support Before Buying

To decide whether a Steam game fits your setup, open that exact game’s Store page and inspect three areas: System Requirements, the supported operating systems, and the controller-support label. If you will play on Steam Deck, also read the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility rating and its detailed notes. Compare those entries with your own computer, operating system, controller and intended way of playing before you buy; no store label can guarantee identical performance on every configuration.

Start with the exact Steam Store page

Requirements and compatibility labels belong to individual games. A publisher’s general recommendation, a different edition, or another game in the same series cannot substitute for the page for the title you intend to purchase. Search Steam for the precise game and open its Store page, then scroll to the sections describing system requirements and controller or Deck compatibility.

Steam’s own support guidance says to check both the computer’s hardware and the operating-system support shown on the game’s Store page. You can read that guidance in Steam Support’s platform-availability article.

Check operating-system support before comparing hardware

Find the operating systems listed on the Store page. The game may support Windows, macOS, Linux or only a subset of those, depending on the title. This is a separate test from hardware: a powerful computer does not make a game supported on an operating system that the page does not list.

  • PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  • Match the listing to the machine you will actually use. Check the operating system on your desktop, laptop or other intended computer, not a different computer on which you own Steam.
  • Treat an omitted operating system as an unresolved compatibility problem. Do not infer support from the fact that Steam itself runs on your platform.
  • Recheck after major changes. Store-page information and game support can change, so use the current page when you are ready to buy.

Read minimum and recommended requirements as different thresholds

In System Requirements, record the CPU, memory, graphics hardware and storage details when they are provided. Compare each item with the actual specifications of the computer on which you plan to play.

Store-page item Question it answers How to use it
Minimum requirements Does the computer meet the game’s stated lower published threshold? Compare the relevant CPU, RAM, graphics and storage entries one by one. Meeting every minimum is not a promise of a particular frame rate or visual quality.
Recommended requirements What hardware does the page recommend for a more capable setup? Use this as a higher target than minimum. It is still not a universal performance guarantee for every configuration.
Storage requirement Is there enough space for the installation, where a capacity is listed? Compare the listed amount with free space on the drive where Steam will install the game; leave room for the operating system and updates rather than treating the number as a complete capacity plan.

Minimum and recommended labels answer different questions. Minimum is the lower requirement published by the developer; recommended is the developer’s higher recommendation. Neither label, by itself, establishes a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, settings preset or result on every combination of components. If your hardware falls between the two tiers, regard that as an intermediate case and avoid promises that the game will run at a particular speed unless the game’s own documentation provides such evidence.

Build a quick comparison sheet

A short written comparison prevents one apparently strong component from hiding a mismatch elsewhere. Record the operating system, processor model, installed memory, graphics adapter and free space on the intended installation drive. Then place the game’s minimum and recommended entries beside those facts. Mark each line as a clear match, a clear miss or uncertain. This is more reliable than judging a computer by its brand, age or a single specification such as RAM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to what the page actually names. If it gives a specific graphics model, compare against the graphics adapter rather than the processor alone. If it lists storage but not a type of drive, do not turn that omission into a speed promise. If a requirement is missing or ambiguous, keep it in the uncertain column and seek title-specific information instead of silently assuming that your machine passes.

Find the game’s controller-support label

Steam uses Full Controller Support and Partial Controller Support to describe how much of the experience can be completed with a controller. Steam defines these labels in its Big Picture mode support article.

Full Controller Support

Full support means the game can be downloaded, launched and played using only a controller. It is the strongest indication for someone who wants controller-only navigation, but it still describes the game’s support level rather than guaranteeing that every controller model will behave identically.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Partial Controller Support

Partial support means a controller can be used for some or much of the game, while another interaction may still require a keyboard or mouse. Steam specifically frames this as the possibility that installation, configuration, menus, a launcher or another step cannot be completed with the controller alone. It does not mean that the controller is unusable; it means you should be prepared for at least one non-controller interaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam’s guidance also says that any Steam game can be played in Big Picture mode, while not all games support controller use. Big Picture is therefore not a substitute for checking the individual game’s label.

Separate controller family support from the game’s label

The support label tells you how much controller interaction the game provides. It does not identify every controller that will work, nor does it promise identical button prompts, wireless behavior or features on each device.

Steam’s Big Picture support list includes the Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controllers, official Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and official Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Steam notes that third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported. Use those statements as general platform guidance, then check the game’s label and the controller you actually intend to use.

An Xbox wireless controller is an optional example of a controller family included in Steam’s supported list; you do not need to buy one merely to check a game’s compatibility. If you already own a different device, treat its behavior as a separate question from whether the Store page says Full or Partial Controller Support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common controller-checking mistakes

  • Confusing Big Picture with game support. Big Picture can run Steam games, but the individual title may still lack controller support.
  • Reading Partial as a total failure. The label warns about at least one non-controller interaction; it does not say that all gameplay must use a keyboard and mouse.
  • Assuming an official family guarantees every feature. A listed Xbox, PlayStation or Switch Pro family is general Steam guidance, not a promise that every game offers the same prompts or mappings.
  • Buying hardware before checking the page. An optional controller purchase cannot resolve an operating-system or hardware mismatch, and no controller is required simply to inspect compatibility.

If you use Steam Deck, read the Deck rating and the details

Steam Deck compatibility is its own decision axis. A game’s general PC requirements and controller label do not replace the Deck-specific assessment. On the Store page, find Steam Deck Compatibility and read both the category and the explanation.

Deck category Steam’s practical meaning What to do before buying
Verified The game works great by default according to Steam’s category description. Read the Store-page details anyway, especially if your Deck setup or controls differ from the default experience.
Playable The game can work, but may require manual configuration or mouse, touch-screen or other interaction. Open the compatibility details and identify the specific requirement that is not in the Verified category.
Unsupported Steam does not currently consider the game playable on Steam Deck. Read the listed unmet criteria and treat the game as a high-risk purchase for Deck use.
Unknown The game has not been tested in the Steam Deck Verified program. Do not interpret Unknown as either a success or a failure; seek current information for that exact title before relying on it.

Steam’s Deck software and troubleshooting guide explains the four ratings and where the Store page displays unmet Verified criteria for Playable or Unsupported results. A Deck rating is specifically about Steam Deck compatibility; it is not a universal result for every Windows PC or other handheld.

The details matter more than the color or icon. A Playable result might identify a manual control step, a mouse or touch interaction, or another criterion that prevents the Verified designation. An Unsupported result likewise has a stated reason on the page. Reading that explanation lets you decide whether the limitation is acceptable for your own use rather than treating every non-Verified result as identical.

A repeatable pre-purchase check

  1. Open the exact title’s Store page. Confirm the name, edition and platform context before reading any specifications.
  2. Record the supported operating systems. Compare the list with the operating system on the machine you will use. Stop and investigate if yours is absent.
  3. Copy the minimum and recommended entries. Note CPU, memory, graphics and storage values wherever the page supplies them.
  4. Compare with the actual machine. Check your computer’s processor, RAM, graphics adapter and available installation space. Compare component by component, not by a vague impression that the computer is “powerful.”
  5. Set a realistic performance expectation. Minimum and recommended tiers are thresholds and guidance, not a frame-rate guarantee. Look for title-specific documentation if a particular resolution, quality preset or frame rate matters to you.
  6. Check Full or Partial Controller Support. Choose Full when you need to download, launch and play without a keyboard or mouse. With Partial, plan for a possible setup, launcher, menu or configuration step that requires another input device.
  7. Match the label to your controller. Consider whether you are using an officially listed controller family or a third-party model, and avoid treating the general label as a promise for every device.
  8. Add the Steam Deck check when relevant. Read the rating and the detailed unmet criteria, not just the colored category or icon.
  9. Resolve decisive uncertainty before paying. If the operating system, a key hardware component, controller-only navigation or a Deck criterion is unclear, use the game’s current support information rather than assuming compatibility.

Use the result for the way you actually play

Your situation Prioritize Purchase decision rule
Windows desktop or laptop Supported operating system, then minimum and recommended CPU, memory, graphics and storage Buy only after the listed operating system matches and your relevant components meet the threshold you consider acceptable.
Controller-only setup Full versus Partial Controller Support, then your controller family Full is the clearest fit for controller-only use. With Partial, keep a keyboard or mouse available for the interactions the label warns about.
Steam Deck Deck rating and detailed criteria, plus the controller experience Verified is the strongest default-fit signal; Playable requires reading the stated manual or mouse/touch steps; Unsupported and Unknown require extra investigation.
Computer shared with other users The specifications and operating system of the computer on which the game will actually run Do not rely on a different family member’s PC or on a cloud or library device unless that is the intended play location and its compatibility is separately established.

What to do when the page does not answer your question

The operating system is not listed

Do not convert an apparent hardware match into a compatibility claim. The Store page’s operating-system list is the relevant starting point; if your platform is missing, investigate current title-specific support before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your computer sits between minimum and recommended

That position does not have a standardized meaning. The page supplies two published reference points, not a formula for predicting a frame rate. Treat the result as uncertain and look for documentation specific to the game and your configuration if performance is important.

The game says Partial Controller Support

Plan for a keyboard or mouse during the interaction the label leaves outside controller-only use. Partial is not a declaration that gameplay cannot use a controller, so the practical question is whether occasional non-controller input is acceptable to you.

The Deck result is Playable or Unsupported

Open the compatibility details and read the unmet Verified criteria. The category alone does not tell you whether the issue is text legibility, a launcher, manual controls or another requirement; the Store page’s explanation is the actionable part.

The Deck result is Unknown

Unknown means untested in the Verified program. It supplies no positive or negative conclusion, so do not treat it as a hidden Verified or Unsupported rating.

Your controller is third-party

Steam’s official list does not turn every third-party model into an officially supported device. Check the game’s label, your controller’s connection method and current support information, and be prepared to configure input yourself.

Check a Steam Deck controller when input behaves unexpectedly

If you already own a Deck and need to diagnose an input problem, Steam’s basic-use and troubleshooting guide directs you to Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. That screen can help establish whether the Deck is receiving the button, stick or trigger input at all.

Steam also lets you inspect or edit a game’s controller layout from the game’s Library details. Use that per-game layout when the physical input is detected but the game’s action mapping is wrong. Testing the device and editing the layout address input configuration; they do not change the Store page’s Full, Partial or Deck compatibility classification.

Keep the limits of Store-page labels in mind

  • Requirements and labels are title-specific and may change, so check the current page for the exact game.
  • Supported operating systems and hardware requirements are separate checks.
  • Minimum and recommended specifications do not guarantee a particular frame rate or identical performance on every system.
  • Full or Partial describes the game’s level of controller support, while controller-model compatibility is a separate consideration.
  • A Steam Deck rating applies to Deck compatibility, not to all PCs or handhelds.
  • Unknown is an untested status, not evidence that a game works or fails.

Making those checks in order turns a vague “Can my PC run this Steam game?” question into a documented decision: the operating system matches, the actual components meet the relevant published tier, the controller label fits the way you intend to play, and any Deck-specific criteria are understood before money changes hands.

Does meeting the minimum requirements guarantee smooth gameplay?

No. Minimum is the lower published threshold, while recommended is a higher target. Neither label guarantees a particular frame rate, resolution or settings result on every configuration.

What does Full Controller Support mean on Steam?

Steam uses Full Controller Support for a game that can be downloaded, launched and played using only a controller.

What does Partial Controller Support mean?

A controller works for some or much of the game, but at least one interaction may require a keyboard or mouse. That could be installation, configuration, a launcher, menus or another step; it does not mean the controller is unusable.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Is Steam Deck Verified the same as meeting PC requirements?

No. Verified is a Steam Deck-specific category describing a game that works great by default according to Steam. It does not replace checking operating-system and hardware requirements for another PC.

What does Unknown mean in Steam Deck Compatibility?

Unknown means the game has not been tested in the Steam Deck Verified program. It is neither proof that the game works nor proof that it fails.

Will any Xbox, PlayStation or Switch controller work with every Steam game?

Steam lists official Microsoft Xbox, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers among supported families, while noting that third-party devices are often not officially supported. The game’s Full or Partial label is a separate check, so identical behavior is not guaranteed for every model.

How can I test a Steam Deck controller?

On Steam Deck, open Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. You can also inspect or edit a game’s controller layout from its Library details when inputs are detected but mapped incorrectly.

The Bottom Line

Before buying, check the exact Store page in this order: supported operating system, minimum and recommended hardware, controller label, and—if applicable—the Steam Deck rating and detailed criteria. Treat Full, Partial, Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown as useful guidance, not universal guarantees, and investigate any decisive uncertainty on the current title page.
