To check an SSD properly, identify its exact make and model, install the manufacturer’s official utility, select the correct drive, and review both the reported health status and any available SMART or diagnostic-test results. The utility must support that SSD: a tool made for one brand may show limited or no SSD-specific information for another brand.
What an SSD health check actually tells you
A manufacturer utility usually provides several different kinds of information. Treat them as separate layers rather than as one universal “pass” or “fail” score.

Drive identity and configuration
The tool can identify the selected drive by model, capacity, firmware version and, in some utilities, temperature or interface details. Confirming the identity matters when a computer contains multiple SSDs or a mix of SSDs and hard disks. A diagnostic result is useful only if it belongs to the drive you intend to check.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Summary health status
A dashboard may display a label such as Good, Healthy or a warning state. This is a vendor-specific summary derived from information the utility can read from the drive. It is convenient for a first look, but the reviewed manufacturer documentation does not establish one universal interpretation for every SMART attribute or every vendor’s label.

SMART information
SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) data contains attributes and counters recorded by the drive. Depending on the model and utility, you may see information such as wear indicators, error counts, temperature, power-on time or spare-block status. Attribute names, scaling and thresholds can differ, so do not compare a raw number from one manufacturer’s tool directly with a number from another without model-specific guidance.
Diagnostic or self-tests
A diagnostic scan actively checks for potential issues or functional errors. It is different from simply reading a health summary. A drive can show a normal summary while a test reveals a problem that deserves investigation, and a completed test is not proof that every possible failure mode has been eliminated.
Before you start
Record the drive’s make and exact model
Use your operating system’s storage or device-information screen, the label on the SSD, or the computer manufacturer’s specification page. Write down the full model string and current firmware version if they are visible. Similar product names can represent different generations with different utility support.
Know how the SSD is connected
An internal SATA or NVMe drive normally exposes more information than a drive attached through a generic USB adapter or enclosure. Some bridge chips do not pass SMART commands or firmware-update commands through to the SSD. If a feature is missing, the connection path may be the reason rather than a failing drive.
Protect important data
Health checking itself is normally non-destructive, but any drive showing warnings should be treated as a data-preservation issue. Copy irreplaceable files to a separate, verified location before running lengthy tests or attempting firmware work. Do not begin a firmware update until you have a current backup and stable power.
Use an administrator account when required
Utilities often need elevated access to read low-level information or update firmware. If the program cannot see the drive, close it, sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts, and reconnect the drive directly rather than through a hub.

These tools are examples, not an exhaustive list of SSD utilities. A utility may install successfully yet provide only generic information when the drive is unsupported. Always use the manufacturer’s compatibility list as the deciding reference.
Step-by-step: check health in the manufacturer utility
- Identify the drive. Note the maker, exact model, capacity and firmware. If more than one drive is installed, note which operating-system volume is on each one.
- Open the official support page. Locate the manufacturer’s SSD utility and read the supported-model and operating-system notes before downloading.
- Install the current supported release. Follow the installer’s prompts. Restart if the installer requests it, especially for NVMe or low-level driver components.
- Launch the utility with the SSD connected directly. Avoid a USB hub or enclosure during the first check if the drive is internal. Approve any administrator prompt.
- Select the intended SSD. Match the model and capacity shown in the program with the information you recorded. Do not run a test on a different disk merely because it is listed first.
- Open the health or status view. Record the summary label, temperature, firmware version and any wear or warning indicators the utility presents.
- Open the SMART details. Save a screenshot or export the report where the program supports it. Preserve the original values and the date so you can identify changes later.
- Run an available diagnostic scan. Choose the short or standard test first unless the manufacturer’s instructions specify another sequence. Keep the computer powered and avoid heavy disk activity while it runs.
- Read the completed-test result. Record whether the test passed, failed, stopped or could not run. Note any error code or affected test component.
- Save the report. Kingston SSD Manager explicitly supports exporting health/status reports. If your utility lacks an export button, capture the model, firmware, status page and test result in screenshots.
Using Samsung Magician
What it can show
Samsung’s documentation for Magician 9.0 lists a drive-health view, SMART checking and a Diagnostic Scan. After launching the program, select the Samsung SSD from the drive list, open the health/status area, and then review SMART information before starting the Diagnostic Scan.
Important compatibility limitation
Samsung says some SSD-specific functions, including Drive Health Status, are not supported for non-Samsung SSDs. If a non-Samsung drive appears in the application but lacks the expected health panel, do not interpret that absence as evidence that the drive is healthy or defective. Use the SSD’s own manufacturer utility instead.
How to record the result
Capture the selected model, firmware, displayed health state, SMART details and Diagnostic Scan outcome. A single green status is only a summary; keep the underlying information if you need technical support.

Using Kingston SSD Manager
Choose the correct download generation
Kingston provides separate downloads for current and legacy drives. Match the SSD’s exact model to the download category. Installing the wrong generation can leave the drive undetected or hide functions that the correct release supports.

Inspect and export health information
SSD Manager can monitor health, status and disk usage and display the drive’s identity and firmware. Open the health/status view for the selected SSD, review the detailed values, and use the report-export function to save a copy. Include that report when contacting Kingston support because it preserves more context than a single dashboard label.
Firmware updates
The manager can offer firmware updates for supported models. Treat that function as a separate operation from checking health. Read the model-specific instructions, back up important data and use stable power before proceeding. Do not interrupt the computer while an update is being applied.
Using Western Digital SSD Dashboard
SMART retrieval
The Western Digital SSD Dashboard user manual describes selecting a drive and retrieving SMART information. Confirm that the selected model is the SSD you intend to inspect, then record the displayed attributes and any health indication.
Short and extended tests
The manual documents a SMART short test and an extended test. It estimates five minutes or less for the short test and ten minutes or longer for the extended test. Those are procedural estimates from the manual, not guarantees for every computer, connection or drive. An extended test can take longer when the drive is busy or when the connection adds overhead.
Check current support information
Because the cited manual is older, verify the current dashboard release and your exact model on Western Digital’s support pages. Interface changes, supported operating systems and model coverage can change over time.
Using Crucial Storage Executive
Confirm supported family and system requirements
Crucial’s support material describes Storage Executive as a Windows utility for optimizing and updating supported Crucial SSDs. The support page lists supported product families and specifies a 64-bit download. Confirm both the SSD family and your Windows edition before installing.

Check the drive and available status information
After installation, select the Crucial SSD and review the health or status information exposed by that version. The exact fields can vary by product family and firmware. Record the model and firmware shown by the utility even when the main dashboard contains only a short status label.
Separate checking from updating
Storage Executive may offer optimization or firmware functions in addition to status information. Do not start an update simply because one is available. Read the applicable instructions, create a full backup and ensure stable power first, following Crucial’s firmware-update guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the result
Healthy or Good
A normal summary means the utility did not detect a condition that it classifies as a warning at that moment. It does not guarantee that files are backed up, that the connection is reliable, or that every intermittent, physical or future failure mode has been ruled out. Continue normal backups and investigate unusual behavior such as freezes, disappearing volumes or repeated operating-system errors.
Warning, degraded or failed
Prioritize copying important data while the drive is still readable. Export the utility’s report, record the exact model and firmware, and follow the manufacturer’s support instructions. Avoid repeated write-heavy experiments on a drive that is already returning errors.
SMART attribute that you do not understand
Do not guess from the attribute name alone. Vendors can use different raw-value formats, normalized values and thresholds. Send the model, firmware, complete report and test result to the manufacturer’s support channel and ask for an interpretation specific to that drive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Diagnostic test cannot run
Check whether the SSD is connected through an adapter, enclosure or RAID layer that blocks SMART commands. Reconnect it directly if possible, close software that is heavily using the disk, rerun the utility with administrator rights, and confirm that the model is supported. If the test still cannot run, preserve the error message rather than assuming the drive passed.
Best Value
Common problems and fixes
The SSD is not listed
- Verify power and data connections for an internal drive.
- Check whether the operating system itself sees the disk.
- Reconnect without a USB hub or generic enclosure if possible.
- Install the utility intended for the exact model and generation.
- Restart after installing the utility or its storage driver.
The tool shows only limited information
Limited information commonly means the drive is from another manufacturer, the model is unsupported, or the connection does not pass the required commands. Samsung specifically documents that some SSD-specific features are unavailable for non-Samsung drives. Use the maker’s own utility and verify the connection path before drawing conclusions.
The displayed capacity or model is unexpected
Stop and reselect the drive. Computers with several disks can make it easy to open the wrong entry. Compare the utility’s model and capacity with the label and the operating-system disk list before running a diagnostic or firmware operation.
The test appears stuck
Allow the manufacturer’s stated duration to pass, recognizing that the WD estimates are not universal. Avoid powering off during an active test unless the manufacturer’s instructions provide a safe cancellation method. If the program becomes unresponsive, document the state and contact support before repeating the operation.
Firmware updates: why the health check comes first
A firmware update can correct a documented issue, but it changes the drive’s operating code and is not a routine substitute for checking health. Read the instructions for the exact model and firmware path. Crucial recommends a full backup and stable power before updating; the same precautions are sensible for any manufacturer utility. Close unnecessary applications, do not disconnect the drive, and do not force a shutdown while the update is in progress.
After a successful update, reopen the utility and record the new firmware version. If the update fails or the drive disappears, stop experimenting and provide the manufacturer with the pre-update model, old firmware, update package, error message and saved health report.
What to send support when the result is unclear
- Exact SSD model and capacity.
- Firmware version before and after any update attempt.
- Computer operating system and whether it is 64-bit where relevant.
- Connection type: internal SATA, internal NVMe, USB adapter, enclosure or RAID.
- Summary health label and complete SMART details.
- Diagnostic test name, duration, final status and error code.
- Exported report or legible screenshots.
- A description of symptoms, including when they began and whether the drive disappears or returns errors.
This information lets support distinguish a compatibility limitation from a drive condition without asking you to repeat potentially stressful tests.
Which checks should you run?
| Situation | First action | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Routine check on a functioning SSD | Open the maker’s utility and record identity, firmware and health status. | Review SMART details and run a short diagnostic if available. |
| Health label is warning or failed | Back up important data immediately. | Export the report and follow model-specific support guidance. |
| Drive is missing from the utility | Confirm the operating system sees it and check the connection path. | Install the correct current or legacy utility for the model. |
| Only a non-manufacturer drive is visible | Use that drive maker’s own diagnostic application. | Do not infer health from a missing vendor-specific feature. |
| A firmware update is offered | Read the exact-model instructions and create a full backup. | Update only with stable power and then verify the new firmware. |
Limits of manufacturer diagnostics
The manufacturer sources document useful applications and procedures, but they do not define a single cross-brand meaning for every SMART field. Platform, model, firmware and connection path can change what the utility can read. A health dashboard is therefore an important screening and support tool, not a universal certification that the SSD can never fail.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a specific attribute, error code or unusual symptom, an exact-model investigation is necessary. Provide the complete report rather than quoting one number without its name, units and threshold. Keep independent backups regardless of the dashboard’s current color or wording.
