Gmail checks spelling automatically while you write an email on a computer. Potentially misspelled words are underlined in the draft; click an underlined word or phrase to view Gmail’s suggestion, then select the correction or choose Ignore. Gmail can also correct some common misspellings automatically. If an automatic correction is wrong, press Ctrl+Z on Windows or Cmd+Z on Mac to undo it.
The workflow below shows how to review every suggestion, verify that spelling suggestions are enabled, and perform the manual checks Gmail cannot reliably make before you click Send.

How Gmail’s spelling check works
Gmail’s standard spelling checker runs in the message editor as you type. It does not require a separate extension or a special proofreading subscription. When Gmail identifies a possible spelling problem, it places an underline beneath the word or phrase. The underline is a prompt to review the text, not proof that the word is definitely wrong.
To inspect a flagged item, click it. A suggestion menu appears beside the draft. Click the suggested replacement to insert it, or select Ignore when the word is intentional. Names, product terms, technical vocabulary and words from another language are often valid even when Gmail does not recognize them.

Gmail may fix some common misspellings without waiting for you to choose a menu item. Watch the sentence after you type or paste text so an automatic change does not alter your meaning. If Gmail changes something incorrectly, immediately use Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Cmd+Z (Mac) to reverse the last change. Google documents this behavior in its Gmail spelling and grammar help.
Step-by-step: check an email before sending it on a computer
- Open Gmail and start or open a draft. Select Compose for a new message, or open an existing draft from the Drafts folder. Enter the recipients and subject so you can proofread the complete message in its final context.
- Write or paste the message. Gmail checks text as it appears in the editor. After pasting a long message, click in the body and give the editor a moment to mark possible issues while you read through it.
- Look for underlined words and phrases. Scan from the greeting to the sign-off. An underline identifies text Gmail wants you to inspect; it does not automatically mean that the wording must change.
- Review each underline. Click the marked item, read the proposed replacement, and decide whether it matches your intended word and sentence. Select the suggestion to accept it, or choose Ignore to leave the original text unchanged.
- Check for unwanted automatic corrections. Compare the sentence with what you intended, especially after typing a familiar word quickly. If Gmail silently changed a word, press
Ctrl+Zon Windows orCmd+Zon Mac. Re-enter the intended wording if necessary. - Read the entire message once without relying on the underlines. Check names, email addresses, dates, numbers and the meaning of each sentence. A correctly spelled word can still be the wrong word—for example, “form” instead of “from”—and Gmail’s spelling suggestions are not a substitute for understanding the message.
- Send only after the final read. Confirm that the corrected text is in the right place and that no ignored underline represents an actual mistake. Then select Send.

- Open Gmail.
- Click the Settings gear icon.
- Select See all settings.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Find the Spelling suggestions control and make sure it is enabled. Turn it off there if you do not want Gmail to mark spelling issues.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Save Changes if Gmail presents that button.
The same General settings area has separate controls for Grammar suggestions and Autocorrect. Enabling one does not automatically enable the others, so check each control according to the kind of assistance you want. Google cautions that spelling and grammar checks may not be available in every language; the setting can be enabled while support for the language used in a particular message remains limited. After saving a change, return to the draft and type a deliberately obvious misspelling in a sentence you can remove afterward. If Gmail underlines it, the spelling suggestion feature is active for that editor and language. Delete the test text before sending. If it is not underlined, recheck the setting and the language limitation noted above rather than treating the absence of a mark as proof that every word is correct.

Why Gmail might not show an underline
A draft with no marks can have several explanations:
- Spelling suggestions are disabled. Revisit Settings > See all settings > General and inspect the spelling control.
- The language is not fully supported. Google says spelling and grammar checks may not be available in all languages. A message can therefore receive fewer or no Gmail suggestions even when the feature is turned on.
- Gmail does not recognize the term as an error. Specialized words, names and newly coined terms may not be in its dictionary. Decide based on the intended meaning instead of changing a valid term simply to remove an underline.
- The possible error is contextual rather than orthographic. “Your” and “you’re,” for example, can each be spelled correctly while only one fits the sentence. Read the whole sentence and the surrounding paragraph.
- You are composing on a phone or tablet. The confirmed Gmail-specific workflow in Google’s documentation is for computer Gmail. Mobile keyboard spell-check behavior can depend on the device and its settings, so the same underlines and menus should not be assumed on every phone.
When a message is important and Gmail provides no useful marks, perform a slow manual read, ask another person to review it, or open the draft on a computer where the documented Gmail editor workflow is available. Do not send a sensitive or high-stakes message solely because the editor shows no underline.

Spelling suggestions, Smart Compose and Gemini Proofread are different
Gmail includes several writing aids that can appear similar but serve different purposes. Standard spelling suggestions are the built-in correction workflow described above; Smart Compose predicts likely continuations while you type; Gemini Proofread is an optional broader review feature whose access depends on an eligible account or plan.

You do not need Smart Compose or Gemini Proofread to use Gmail’s normal spelling suggestions. If either optional feature is unavailable, the underlined-word workflow and the spelling setting remain the relevant tools for a computer draft.
Computer Gmail versus the mobile Gmail app
The step-by-step controls in this guide are established for Gmail on a computer. Google’s iPhone and iPad help for composing and sending messages explains the send process but does not establish that the Gmail app provides the same spelling-suggestion menu or General-settings controls. On a phone or tablet, the operating system’s keyboard may underline or correct words independently of Gmail. Those corrections, available languages and undo gestures vary by device and keyboard. If you need to use Gmail’s documented underlined-word suggestions, compose or open the draft in desktop Gmail before sending. Regardless of platform, manually verify names, addresses and the intended meaning.
A final proofreading checklist before you click Send
- Recipients: Confirm every address and make sure the message is going to the intended people. Spelling assistance does not validate whether an address belongs to the right person.
- Names and titles: Compare names, company names and job titles with the source information. A proper name can be valid even when Gmail marks it.
- Word choice: Check commonly confused pairs such as “affect/effect,” “than/then” and “your/you’re.” These are meaning checks, not simply spelling checks.
- Numbers and dates: Re-read amounts, deadlines, times, phone numbers and account identifiers character by character. A spell checker is not a numerical verifier.
- Edits you accepted: Read each corrected sentence again to ensure the replacement fits the surrounding words and did not change the intended tone.
- Ignored marks: Reconsider every item you chose to ignore. Keep the original only when you are confident it is a valid name, term, abbreviation or intentional wording.
- Message context: Read the opening, request, attachments or links mentioned, and closing as one complete message. Correctly spelled words can still create an unclear or inaccurate email.
Gmail’s checker is fastest when used as a first pass: inspect its underlines, accept only appropriate corrections, undo unwanted automatic changes, and then read for context yourself. That combination catches both ordinary typos and the mistakes an automated dictionary cannot identify.
