How to Check SonicWall SMA 1000 Logs for Signs of Exploitation

To check a SonicWall SMA 1000 for exploitation evidence, open AMC > Monitoring > Logging, inspect the relevant access, system, management, and service logs, and search for the exact indicators published in the applicable SonicWall security advisory. For the July 2026 advisory, the key checks are requests in extraweb_access.log for /__api__/login or /__api__/logout returning HTTP 200, /wsproxy requests returning HTTP 101 with suspicious host parameters, path-traversal hotfix rollbacks in ctrl-service.log, and unexpected routes for those API paths in /var/lib/unit/conf.json.

A matching entry is an indicator that needs correlation and forensic review, not proof of compromise by itself. First record the appliance model and exact platform-hotfix, because SonicWall’s July, September, and October 2026 notices cover different CVE sets and different affected and fixed releases. If an indicator is found, preserve the evidence, contact SonicWall Technical Support, and follow the vendor’s recovery instructions rather than treating the log viewer as a stand-alone verdict.

Why the exact advisory and firmware build matter

SMA 1000 exploitation checks are version-specific. The 6210, 7210, and 8200v appear in the 2026 notices, but each notice addresses a different vulnerability set. A device can be patched for one set and still require action for another, so compare both the appliance’s exact platform-hotfix and the artifacts in the logs against the same advisory.

CVE-2026-83548, a pre-authentication SSRF through an unintended forward proxy (CVSS 10.0, Critical), and CVE-2026-83549, a post-authentication RCE (CVSS 7.8, High). SonicWall said these vulnerabilities were actively exploited in the wild. All instances of 12.4.3-03453 and 12.5.0-02835 12.4.3-03526 and 12.5.0-02952

SNWLID-2026-0017
CVE-2026-102255 SSRF (CVSS 10.0), CVE-2026-102256 RCE (7.8), CVE-2026-102257 Zip Slip path traversal (7.2), and CVE-2026-102258 stored XSS (5.5). SonicWall reported no evidence that this separate set was being exploited in the wild. 12.4.3-03526 and earlier; 12.5.0-02952 and earlier 12.4.3-03670 and 12.5.0-03082 and higher

The October statement applies only to the four October CVEs. It does not cancel SonicWall’s earlier active-exploitation reports for the July and September vulnerability sets. The May 2022 notice about older SMA 1000 12.4.0 and 12.4.1 issues is historical context, not evidence about any 2026 CVE.

Prepare before opening or filtering logs

Incident handling is easier when the device state and evidence are captured before changes are made.

  • Identify the appliance: record whether it is a 6210, 7210, or 8200v, and copy the complete platform-hotfix string exactly as displayed in AMC.
  • Record the time basis: note the appliance time zone, current clock, and the time window under investigation. Preserve the original timestamps when exporting or copying entries.
  • Define the advisory comparison: choose July, September, or October based on the CVE set you are investigating. Do not use a fixed version from one notice to interpret another notice.
  • Limit changes: avoid deleting logs, rotating files manually, rolling back hotfixes, or modifying configuration before evidence is preserved.
  • Collect supporting context: if available, retain firewall, reverse-proxy, identity-provider, VPN, endpoint, and administrator records for the same timestamps. Those records can show whether a source address, account, or session continued elsewhere.
  • Use a controlled administrator session: document who performed the review and when. Management-access records include the user, time, network location, and actions such as logins, data access, and configuration changes.

Open the AMC log viewer

  1. Sign in to the SMA 1000 administrative console (AMC) with an account authorized to view logs.
  2. Open Monitoring > Logging.
  3. Choose the log file from the log selector. Start with the service and access logs named in the applicable advisory, then expand to system and management logs for correlation.
  4. Use the viewer’s search control to search an exact path, status code, filename, session ID, source, or distinctive message text.
  5. Apply level, source, and status filters to reduce unrelated entries. Change one filter at a time and record the selected values so another responder can reproduce the search.
  6. Expand long entries to reveal the complete request, parameters, or message. A collapsed line can hide the field that makes an event suspicious.
  7. Refresh the viewer when investigating an active incident, but capture or export the entries already identified before refreshing so the working set is not lost.

The 12.5 Administration Guide identifies these log categories: system message, management message, management audit, management access, network proxy/tunnel audit, Web proxy audit, client installation, and unregistered-device logs. The 12.4 guide describes system-message fields as level, time, source, session ID, and message. Sources include network proxy, network tunnel, Web proxy, and policy server.

What each field contributes

  • Time: establishes ordering and lets you compare the event with external authentication, proxy, and endpoint records.
  • Source: points toward the originating service, such as network proxy, network tunnel, Web proxy, or policy server.
  • Session ID: lets you follow related entries across a login, request, policy decision, or configuration action.
  • Level: helps prioritize warnings and errors, but a normal-looking level does not make a request legitimate.
  • Message: contains the request, decision, action, or error that must be interpreted against the advisory indicator.

Search the July 2026 indicators exactly

SonicWall says the July indicator list is not exhaustive. Treat these matches as high-priority leads and preserve the surrounding entries rather than searching only for a single isolated line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Artifact Exact match to look for Why it matters
extraweb_access.log A request to /__api__/login or /__api__/logout with HTTP status 200 The July advisory identifies these API paths and response status as an indicator. The advisory states that these paths are not legitimate WorkPlace behavior in the relevant context.
extraweb_access.log A request to /wsproxy with suspicious host parameters and HTTP status 101 The path, host parameter behavior, and protocol-switch response together match the published indicator. SonicWall does not publish example malicious host values in the material available here, so do not invent a value list.
ctrl-service.log A hotfix rollback containing path-traversal names A rollback that includes traversal-style names can indicate an attempt to place or access files outside the intended rollback location.
/var/lib/unit/conf.json Routes for /__api__/login or /__api__/logout The July advisory says these URIs do not exist in legitimate configuration. An unexpected route should be preserved and reviewed as a configuration-integrity indicator.

Review extraweb_access.log

Select extraweb_access.log in the viewer and search for /__api__/login. Repeat for /__api__/logout. Filter or inspect the HTTP status field and flag entries returning 200. Capture the full line, timestamp, source address or host information shown by the appliance, session identifier if present, and nearby requests from the same source.

Next search for /wsproxy. Inspect the complete host parameter and confirm whether the response status is 101. Do not label a request malicious merely because a host value looks unusual; preserve the exact value and correlate it with the source, timing, authentication state, and other appliance events. The vendor material does not provide a canonical list of malicious host values.

Review ctrl-service.log

Search for rollback activity and expand each matching entry. Look for names that use path traversal rather than a normal hotfix package or expected rollback path. Record the entire message, including the rollback target, filename, timestamp, and any session or task identifier. Compare the event with authorized maintenance records. A legitimate emergency rollback can exist, but a traversal-style name requires escalation because it can indicate manipulation of the rollback process.

Inspect /var/lib/unit/conf.json

Preserve the file as evidence before editing or restarting services. Search for route definitions containing /__api__/login or /__api__/logout. SonicWall’s July notice says those routes do not belong in legitimate configuration. Save the relevant surrounding JSON, file metadata available through AMC or your approved collection process, and the time the file was observed. Do not “clean up” the route before vendor or incident-response review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correlate a suspected event across AMC logs

A useful match has a timeline, an initiating source, and related actions. Use the session ID whenever the viewer provides one.

  1. Start with the suspicious request or configuration entry and note its exact timestamp.
  2. Search that session ID in system message, management access, management audit, network proxy/tunnel audit, and Web proxy audit logs.
  3. Check whether the same source address generated authentication attempts, proxy connections, configuration changes, hotfix operations, or access to data.
  4. Compare the event with authorized administrator activity, scheduled maintenance, and change tickets.
  5. Extend the time window before and after the match. Exploitation activity may include reconnaissance, a successful action, and cleanup attempts that are separated by minutes.
  6. Preserve both the matching entry and the entries that show why it may be benign or malicious. Context is essential when SonicWall reviews the device.

System-message records access-control decisions, while management-access records identify users, times, network locations, and actions. Those two perspectives can distinguish an unsolicited external request from an authorized administrator session, but neither should be interpreted in isolation.

Interpret the result with two separate tests

Assess every appliance on two axes and keep the results separate:

  1. Version exposure: does the model and exact platform-hotfix fall within the affected range of the specific advisory?
  2. Artifact match: do the logs or configuration contain an indicator published for that same advisory and CVE set?
Version test Artifact test Meaning and next action
Not affected by the advisory No match No evidence from this check for that advisory. Continue normal patch governance and review other applicable notices.
Not affected by the advisory Match Investigate anyway. The artifact may relate to another issue, a misconfiguration, or an older compromise; preserve it and ask SonicWall to interpret it.
Affected by the advisory No match Exposure remains because absence of a listed artifact is not proof that exploitation did not occur. Upgrade according to the applicable notice and continue broader review.
Affected by the advisory Match Treat as a high-priority incident lead. Preserve evidence, restrict unnecessary administrative access, contact SonicWall Technical Support, and follow the vendor’s recovery guidance.

Do not combine the October “no evidence of exploitation in the wild” statement with the July or September results. It describes only CVE-2026-102255 through CVE-2026-102258, not the earlier actively exploited sets.

What to do when an indicator is found

For the September actively exploited vulnerability set

SonicWall directs organizations running affected SMA 1000 deployments to upgrade to the latest hotfix and contact Technical Support for IoC review. If indicators are detected, the published recovery actions are to re-image hardware appliances or redeploy virtual appliances, change all user and administrator passwords, and reset TOTP tokens. Coordinate those steps with your incident-response plan so that evidence is preserved before rebuild and identity changes are tracked.

For the July vulnerability set

The July notice likewise recommends thorough forensic analysis and the same re-image or redeployment, password-change, and TOTP-reset measures when indicators are present. The four displayed indicators are explicitly non-exhaustive, so a clean search does not replace a broader forensic review.

For the October vulnerability set

The October notice directs affected deployments to upgrade to the latest hotfix version but does not provide a log-IoC checklist in the notice text described here. Use the current applicable advisory and SonicWall support guidance for investigation rather than reusing the July search strings as if they covered all four October vulnerabilities.

Preserve evidence before rebuilding

  • Capture the relevant log entries, expanded fields, filters, timestamps, and session IDs.
  • Preserve copies of the indicated configuration or service-log sections, including /var/lib/unit/conf.json when applicable.
  • Document the appliance model, exact build, management users involved, and the time the evidence was collected.
  • Keep a chain-of-custody record if the event may require legal, regulatory, or insurance reporting.
  • Provide the preserved material to SonicWall Technical Support when requesting IoC review.

Common review mistakes and how to avoid them

Searching only the newest notice

The October advisory is newer, but it addresses a different CVE set. Start with the date and CVE set that matches the suspected exposure, then check whether later notices also apply to the installed build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a status code as proof

HTTP 200 or 101 becomes meaningful only when paired with the exact path and the surrounding request details specified by the July advisory. A status code by itself is not an exploitation verdict.

Looking at one line without its session

Follow the session ID through system, management, proxy, and audit logs. This can reveal whether the event was an authorized action, a failed probe, or part of a larger sequence.

Assuming absence means safety

SonicWall’s indicator list is not exhaustive. An affected build with no listed match still needs patching and an appropriately scoped forensic review.

Changing the appliance before collecting evidence

Re-imaging, rotating credentials, editing routes, or rolling back hotfixes can destroy useful context. Preserve the evidence first, then perform containment and recovery in a documented order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational checklist

  • Confirm the model: 6210, 7210, or 8200v.
  • Record the exact platform-hotfix and compare it with the July, September, and October rows above.
  • Open Monitoring > Logging in AMC.
  • Search extraweb_access.log for /__api__/login and /__api__/logout with HTTP 200.
  • Search extraweb_access.log for /wsproxy with suspicious host parameters and HTTP 101.
  • Search ctrl-service.log for hotfix rollbacks containing path-traversal names.
  • Inspect /var/lib/unit/conf.json for routes to the two API paths.
  • Expand entries, capture session IDs, and correlate them across system, management, proxy, and audit logs.
  • Preserve evidence and contact SonicWall Technical Support when an indicator or unexplained high-risk event is found.
  • If the applicable advisory calls for it, complete the vendor-directed upgrade, re-image or redeploy, password changes, and TOTP resets.
