Before buying during an online sale, check the seller’s recent feedback, read the return terms for that exact listing, and confirm what the marketplace and your payment method can do if something goes wrong. Sale items do not all have the same return rules, and a high star rating is not a guarantee of a safe purchase. The guidance below uses U.S. Federal Trade Commission advice; consumer rights and rules may differ elsewhere.

1. Check the seller, not just the product rating

Open the seller’s profile and look for recent buyer feedback, contact details, and recurring complaints—especially about delivery, refunds, or returns. Read the comments rather than relying on the average score. A product’s rating may describe the item, not the seller who will fulfill your order.

Search the seller or site name with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam,” and compare more than one source. A very low price on an expensive branded product can be a warning sign, but price alone does not prove fraud. Reviews can be fake or misleading, incentives may not always be clear, and some platforms label only incentives they know about. Treat specific, recent accounts as useful context, not a guarantee. The FTC explains how to spot and avoid fake reviews; its review-rule guidance also addresses deceptive suppression of reviews about customer service, delivery, returns, and exchanges.

There is no universal seller-star cutoff that guarantees a safe purchase. A high score can coexist with restrictive return terms, so weigh reputation and the actual remedy separately.

  • Specifications: 5 1/4” x 7 1/4", English, Soft bound. 7th Edition. Copyright 2024.

2. Read the return policy for this exact sale item

Check both the seller’s return/refund policy and the listing’s condition notes or fine print. A general store policy may have exceptions for a particular item. The FTC notes that sellers often apply different return rules to sale merchandise, especially clearance goods; being on sale does not itself establish a universal right to return it. See the FTC’s refund and return policy advice.

  • Eligibility: Does the policy exclude sale, clearance, final-sale, refurbished, or open-box items?
  • Remedy: Is the outcome a refund, exchange, or store credit?
  • Deadline: What is the last day to request a return or ship the item back?
  • Cost: Who pays return postage, and is there a restocking fee?

If a term is unclear, ask the seller before paying and keep the answer in writing. Check the rules that apply in your location rather than assuming that every seller or country follows the same policy.

3. Confirm whether marketplace protection applies

A marketplace may only connect buyers and sellers, or it may offer a defined process for help or refunds. Read its current policy and verify that protection covers this seller, item, payment channel, and reason for a claim. Note any return or claim window; marketplace rules and eligibility can change.

Keep the transaction and messages on the platform. The FTC warns that paying outside a marketplace can remove its protection. Its advice for buying from an online marketplace is to check the seller’s return rules, understand who can help with a problem, and use a safe payment method.

4. Compare the full cost and delivery promise

Compare the final checkout amount, not only the advertised sale price. Include shipping, handling, taxes, and other fees, and check whether the low price depends on a subscription, required add-on, or other condition. Save the promised delivery date and note the item’s stated condition.

For U.S. purchases, FTC guidance says sellers must ship as promised. If no shipping time is promised, they generally must ship within 30 days after receiving the buyer’s name, address, payment, or permission to charge. This is a shipping rule, not a general right to return an item.

5. Keep records and use a payment method with recourse

Save or screenshot the product page, seller identity, sale and return terms, delivery promise, and any written answers. Keep the order confirmation, amount paid, seller messages, shipping information, and payment record together. Record the return deadline and any marketplace claim deadline so you can act in time.

FTC guidance recommends credit cards where possible; cardholders may be able to dispute charges in some circumstances. Protected online payment options may also offer recourse, but the exact rights depend on the transaction and applicable rules. Avoid gift cards, wire transfers, cash reload cards, cryptocurrency, and requests to pay outside the marketplace.

How to choose between two sellers offering the same item

Compare the terms side by side rather than choosing by star score alone:

  • Review evidence: Are comments recent and specific, and do patterns appear across more than one source?
  • Accountability: Is the seller identifiable, reachable, and willing to answer questions in writing?
  • Return value: Is a refund available, by what deadline, and who pays postage? Are there sale-item exceptions or restocking fees?
  • Marketplace recourse: Does the marketplace cover this item and seller, and how soon must a claim be filed?
  • Actual deal: What is the all-in cost, condition, delivery promise, and any condition attached to the advertised price?
  • Payment and records: Can you pay through a method with possible recourse and preserve the terms and communications?

If a purchase goes wrong

  1. Contact the seller promptly and keep a record of the message and response.
  2. If direct resolution fails, contact the marketplace and follow its process and deadlines.
  3. If you paid by card, contact the issuer about a dispute where appropriate.
  4. Keep purchase documents and check the seller’s policy before pursuing a return or refund. You can report suspected dishonest businesses to the FTC, which does not resolve individual complaints.

The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam it received in 2022. That statistic describes reports to the agency in that year; it is not a current-year rate or a measure of the odds that a particular sale is fraudulent.
