Use the built-in settings for your device. In Windows, installed RAM is under Settings > System > About, while disk capacity and free space are under Settings > System > Storage. On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > About > System Report for hardware details and use Activity Monitor for current memory use. On iPhone and iPad, storage is at Settings > General > [Device] Storage. On Android, start with Settings > Storage; the exact menu can vary by manufacturer.
“ROM” is common consumer shorthand for persistent storage, but current operating systems usually call it storage, capacity, or available space. RAM (memory) is the working area used to run apps and the operating system. Storage keeps files and apps when the device is turned off.

RAM, ROM, storage, and memory: what you are actually checking
Two different numbers are often confused:
- Installed RAM: the physical working memory fitted to the computer or phone. It affects how many programs can remain active and how much multitasking the system can handle.
- Memory in use: the amount of RAM being used right now. This changes as apps open, close, cache data, or run background tasks; it is not the device’s installed capacity.
- Total storage: the full capacity of an internal drive or phone storage chip.
- Available or free storage: the part of that capacity that is currently unused. The operating system, recovery data, preinstalled apps, caches, and other system data consume the remainder.
Google’s Android guidance puts the distinction plainly: “Storage is where you keep data, like music and photos,” while “Memory is where you run programs, like apps and the Android system.” A phone can therefore have plenty of storage but run short of RAM, or have ample RAM while its storage is nearly full.

Some phones also advertise “RAM Plus,” virtual memory, or a similar feature. That setting uses storage as an extension of working memory; it should not be added to the physical RAM figure unless the manufacturer explicitly defines the number that way.

Check RAM and storage on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
Find installed RAM and basic hardware information
- Open Settings from the Start menu or with the Windows-I keyboard shortcut.
- Select System, then About.
- Scroll to Device specifications.
- Read the Installed RAM entry. The same area identifies the processor and other device details, which helps you confirm that you are inspecting the intended computer.
The figure shown here is the installed memory reported by Windows. It is not a live “used versus free” reading. A small difference between the fitted module’s advertised size and the usable amount in Windows can result from hardware-reserved memory or system allocation.
Find total and free disk space
- In Settings, choose System.
- Select Storage.
- Review the storage summary for the Windows drive. It separates used space into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, documents, and other data, and shows the remaining available space.
Storage is normally displayed in decimal gigabytes or terabytes, while some manufacturers label drive capacity using slightly different conventions. The number in Windows can therefore be lower than the capacity printed on a drive’s packaging even when the drive is functioning normally.
Check additional internal drives
If the PC has more than one drive, the first Storage page may emphasize the Windows system drive. Open Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives to review other internal drives together. Check each drive’s total and available space before moving large folders or installing software; a nearly full secondary drive can cause errors even when the Windows drive has room.

Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, although the operating system continues to run. The Settings paths remain useful for examining an existing Windows 10 installation; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 for continued supported updates when the hardware qualifies.
Check RAM and storage on a Mac
Use System Report for hardware details
- Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select General, then About.
- Click System Report.
System Report opens a detailed hardware and software inventory. Use its memory-related hardware information to identify the Mac’s installed memory configuration. The report is also useful when you need the model identifier, processor details, storage hardware, or operating-system information for support or compatibility checks.
Use Activity Monitor for current memory pressure
Apple directs users to Activity Monitor for memory-usage information. Its Memory view shows how RAM is being used at that moment, along with system memory pressure and processes consuming memory. Treat this as a live diagnostic view, not as a replacement for the installed-memory information in the hardware report. Closing an app can reduce current use without changing the Mac’s physical RAM.

Locate Mac storage information
Apple’s System Information guidance also points to the Mac’s Storage settings for space information. The exact labels can differ between macOS releases, so use the Storage section shown in System Settings or the storage view in About on your version. Look for both the drive’s overall capacity and the available amount; a category breakdown can help identify large applications, documents, or system data.

Use the device’s Storage page
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage or iPad Storage; the label includes the device name.
- Read the storage summary and the list of apps.
- Tap an app to see more detail and the actions available for that app.
This page shows recommendations for freeing space and ranks apps by the storage they use. It is the practical place to check total capacity, available space, and which apps or content are consuming the most room. Cached and temporary data may not always be counted in the same way as permanent app data, so category totals can change after an app refreshes or the system performs housekeeping.
Inspect an iPhone or iPad from a computer
Connect the device with a cable, then select it in Finder on a Mac, the Apple Devices app on supported Windows setups, or iTunes on older Mac configurations using macOS Mojave or earlier. The device page includes a colored storage bar that divides space by content type, such as apps, photos, media, and other data. This view is useful when the phone’s screen is damaged, when you are preparing a backup, or when you want a larger overview of content categories.
What iPhone and iPad settings do not show
Apple’s consumer storage procedure does not provide a Settings page for the installed physical RAM figure. Do not treat the storage page, an app’s current memory use, or a third-party specification listing as an Apple-supported RAM measurement. If you need that specification for a technical comparison, verify the exact model separately; for ordinary troubleshooting, iPadOS and iOS expose storage management rather than a user-adjustable RAM display.
Check storage on an Android phone
Use the Android Storage setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage, or use the Settings search box for “Storage” if the menu is organized differently.
- Review total, used, and available space and open the categories shown for apps, images, videos, audio, downloads, or system data.
Google notes that Android menus vary by phone and software version. A manufacturer may place the same information under a device-care, battery-and-device-care, or storage-management heading. If the generic path is absent, search Settings for storage or consult the phone maker’s support instructions for that model.

Check internal and SD-card space with Files by Google
- Open Files (Files by Google).
- Tap Menu, then Clean.
- Check the figures at the top for used and available device storage.
When an SD card is installed and supported by the phone, Files can also show its space. Keep the two locations separate: deleting a file from internal storage does not automatically create room on the card, and an SD card’s capacity does not increase the phone’s installed RAM.

Find the installed RAM figure
There is no single Android Settings path that Google documents for every phone’s physical RAM capacity. Some manufacturers display it in an About phone, Device information, or Specifications page; others expose only live memory use in a device-care screen. Use the model-specific specification page when you need the installed figure. Do not combine physical RAM with a virtual-memory feature or report a live usage number as the phone’s total RAM.
Low-storage warning
Google Android Help states: “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” This is general guidance, not a guaranteed threshold for every model or symptom. If a phone is below that level, remove or move large files, uninstall unused apps, clear downloads, or use the system’s storage recommendations before diagnosing more complex problems.
How to read the results correctly
Installed versus usable capacity
Operating systems reserve part of RAM and storage for themselves, firmware, recovery tools, file-system metadata, and hardware functions. Consequently, the usable number can be lower than the capacity printed in a product specification. Compare like with like: installed RAM with installed RAM, and available storage with available storage.
Internal storage versus removable storage
A Windows PC can have several internal drives, while an Android phone may have internal storage plus an SD card. Record each location separately, including its free space. An app may be installable only on internal storage, and some system updates require internal free space even when a removable card has plenty of room.
Live memory use is not a performance score
Modern systems intentionally use spare RAM for caches and background services. A high percentage of memory in use is not automatically a fault. Look for persistent symptoms—apps repeatedly reloading, severe swapping, or a memory-pressure warning—rather than judging the device from one snapshot. On a Mac, Activity Monitor’s memory-pressure indicator is more informative than a single used-memory number.
Troubleshoot when the number is missing or looks wrong
The menu path does not match
- Windows: confirm that you opened System > About for RAM and System > Storage for disk space; the two values are intentionally on different pages.
- Mac: use System Settings > General > About > System Report for hardware, and Activity Monitor for current usage.
- Android: search Settings for “storage” or “RAM,” because the manufacturer may rename or relocate both pages.
The free-space total changes after cleanup
Temporary files, caches, cloud-sync status, operating-system updates, and recycle or recently deleted folders can change the available number without any hardware change. Recheck after the cleanup operation finishes and after a restart if the system still shows an unexpectedly low value.

The device feels slow despite ample storage
Free storage and RAM solve different problems. A nearly full drive can interfere with updates and file operations, while insufficient working memory can cause apps to reload or the system to pause. Check the relevant measure for the symptom instead of assuming that adding storage will increase RAM or that closing apps will create more permanent capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my RAM on Windows?
Open Settings, choose System, select About, and read Installed RAM under Device specifications. This is the installed capacity, not the amount currently in use. For storage, use Settings > System > Storage instead.
How do I check how much storage I have on a Mac?
Open the Storage view available in System Settings or About. Check both the drive’s total capacity and its available space. For installed memory details, use Apple menu > System Settings > General > About > System Report; use Activity Monitor only for live memory use.
How do I check RAM and ROM on my phone?
On iPhone and iPad, Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage shows storage, but Apple does not provide a Settings procedure for installed physical RAM. On Android, check Settings > Storage for storage and use the manufacturer’s About phone or Specifications page for physical RAM when available.
Why is my available storage lower than the advertised capacity?
The operating system, preinstalled apps, recovery data, file-system information, caches, and other system allocations use part of the device. Drive manufacturers and operating systems can also display capacity using different conventions, so the usable figure may be lower without indicating a fault.

Does an SD card increase my Android phone’s RAM?
No. An SD card adds removable storage only. It does not increase installed physical RAM. A feature such as RAM Plus may use storage as virtual memory, but it should not be reported as physical RAM unless the phone maker explicitly defines it that way.
What should I do if Android has less than 10% free storage?
Google Android Help says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. Treat that as general guidance, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Remove large files, clear downloads, uninstall unused apps, or follow the phone’s storage recommendations, then check the available space again.
Why does Activity Monitor show a different memory number than my Mac’s System Report?
System Report describes the Mac’s hardware and installed memory configuration. Activity Monitor shows how memory is being used at that moment, including processes, caches, and memory pressure. The live figure changes as apps and background tasks run.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I check iPhone storage from a computer?
Yes. Connect the device and select it in Finder, the Apple Devices app, or iTunes on older Mac configurations using macOS Mojave or earlier. The device page displays a colored bar dividing storage by content type.
Why do Windows storage totals differ between drives?
Windows may emphasize the system drive on the main Storage page. Open Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives to review additional internal drives. Record each drive’s total and available space separately.
The Bottom Line
Use the platform’s built-in pages and keep the measurements separate: installed RAM describes working memory, while total and available storage describe persistent space. Windows shows RAM in System > About and storage in System > Storage; Mac uses System Report for hardware and Activity Monitor for live use; iPhone and iPad expose storage rather than a user-facing RAM figure; Android storage paths vary and physical RAM is usually model-specific. Internal drives, SD cards, virtual memory, and live usage are not interchangeable numbers.
