To price a PlayStation 2 game defensibly, identify the exact release and copy, then compare several recent sold transactions for matching region, print, completeness and condition. A guide value is only an estimate; an active listing is an asking price, not proof that buyers pay it.
What a PS2 game is really worth
There is no single universal price for a PS2 game. Value changes with the title, region, release or print variant, what is included, physical condition, whether the disc has been tested, and when and where the transaction occurred. The most useful answer for a buyer or seller is therefore a range supported by comparable completed sales, not a number copied from one guide or one unsold listing.

This distinction matters when you are asking the same practical question seen in a public r/ps2 discussion: “I would like to sell my Ps2 Pal version games on ebay, but i have no idea how much would be a realistic price.” A PAL copy should be compared with PAL sales of the same release, in a similar state of completeness and condition. A US or Japanese result can be useful context, but it is not automatically an equivalent price.

The evidence hierarchy: sold, guide and asking prices
Completed sales are transaction evidence
Start with completed or sold listings. PriceCharting says its PS2 guide prices draw on sold listings from eBay and other marketplaces. Its individual item pages describe historic sales as transactions in which a buyer and seller agreed on a price; unsold items are not included in those prices. Those records are the closest available evidence of what someone actually paid, subject to the listing being correctly described.

Guide values are estimates
A price guide is useful for finding a starting range and for spotting whether a title deserves individual research. It is not a guaranteed offer. Guide estimates can change as new transactions are recorded, and the displayed number may combine many sales with different dates and descriptions. Record when you checked a guide and recheck it before publishing a listing or making a purchase.
Active listings show seller expectations
An active listing tells you what a seller hopes to receive. It does not establish that the item will sell at that amount. Use active listings to understand current competition, photographs and shipping practices only after you have examined sold results. Never treat the highest unsold listing as the market value.
Step 1: Identify the exact copy
Write down the details before searching. Small differences that look interchangeable in a search result can represent different markets and prices.
Record these fields
- Title: use the complete game title, including a subtitle and any collection or special-edition wording.
- Region: note PAL, North American or Japan, and compare it with the region shown in the sale record.
- Release or print: distinguish an original black-label release from a Greatest Hits or other later print when applicable. Also note collector, limited, promo or bundle variants.
- Completeness: record whether the copy is disc-only, includes the original case or box, includes the manual, is complete with the expected contents, or is sealed.
- Condition: describe the disc, case, artwork and manual separately. Add whether the disc was tested, but only if you actually tested it.
- Sale context: capture the marketplace, currency, geography and sale date.
Photograph the front and back of the case, the disc label and underside, the manual and any inserts. These photos help you match a sale accurately and prevent a listing from quietly promising accessories or artwork that your copy lacks.
Step 2: Choose the right completeness category
Do not compare every copy of a title as if it were the same product. PriceCharting’s PS2 guide separates loose, complete-in-box (CIB) and new categories. Its God of War item page goes further by showing item-and-box and item-and-manual categories. Use the category that describes the copy you actually own.

| Copy state | What it normally means for comparison | What to verify in the listing |
|---|---|---|
| Loose | Disc or cartridge-equivalent game media without the original case and its contents | Whether artwork, case or manual is included despite the seller using “loose” loosely |
| Item and box | Game media with the original case or box | That the case is original and includes the correct cover art |
| Item and manual | Game media with the original instruction manual | Whether the original case is absent, and whether the manual belongs to that print |
| Complete or CIB | Media, original case or box and expected manual or inserts | Which contents the seller counts as complete; definitions can vary by listing |
| New or sealed | Factory-sealed or otherwise presented as unopened | That the seal is genuine and that “new” is not merely a description of clean used condition |
If your manual is present but the case is missing, do not automatically use the CIB figure. Look for item-and-manual sales when the guide or marketplace provides that category. If no directly matching category exists, explain the mismatch and base your range on the closest documented comparables rather than implying that the copy is complete.
Step 3: Search sold listings precisely
- Search the exact title and platform. Include “PS2” and, where relevant, the region or print wording. Add terms such as “black label,” “Greatest Hits,” “PAL,” “manual,” “complete” or “sealed” only when they describe your copy.
- Open the completed or sold-results view. Do not stop at the default active-results page. On a marketplace, use its completed/sold filter; on a price guide, open the item’s historic-sales section.
- Read the full description and inspect photographs. Confirm what was included, whether the disc was tested, and whether the condition matches the headline.
- Write down the sale date, amount, currency, shipping treatment and marketplace. A sale with shipping charged separately is not directly comparable with one showing an all-in price.
- Discard mismatches. Remove sales for another region, print, bundle, graded or sealed copy, missing contents or materially different condition.
- Keep several relevant records. A cluster of comparable sales is more informative than one unusually high or low result.
PriceCharting’s God of War page illustrates why this work matters: its dated records show different descriptions and amounts for the same PS2 title. The title alone does not tell you whether a result is loose, includes a box or manual, is complete, or is new.

Step 4: Build a defensible price range
Use the middle of comparable results, not an outlier
After removing mismatches, arrange the remaining sales by date and amount. Look for the range in which several comparable copies sold. A single unusually high result may reflect a different edition, exceptional condition, grading, bundled shipping, or an error in the listing. A very low result may be a damaged or incomplete copy, a rushed sale or a misclassified item.
Your notes should make the conclusion auditable: “Five PAL black-label CIB sales, dated from [date of each sale], ranged from [amount] to [amount]; three clustered near [amount].” Use the actual dates and amounts you observe. Do not turn that small sample into a market-wide statistic.
Keep guide and transaction figures separate
Present a guide estimate in one column or sentence and the observed sold range in another. The guide can help a reader find the right item page, while the sold range explains what comparable buyers actually paid. If they differ, investigate the category, timing, region and condition before choosing which evidence to emphasize.

Illustrative guide snapshot: God of War for PS2
When checked for this guide, PriceCharting displayed the following estimates for the PlayStation 2 release of God of War:
| Category | Displayed estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Loose | $10.97 | Guide estimate for a loose copy at the time of access |
| Item and box | $14.64 | Guide estimate for media with its box or case |
| Item and manual | $15.00 | Guide estimate for media with the manual |
| Complete | $18.31 | Guide estimate for a complete copy |
| New | $49.48 | Guide estimate for a new or sealed category |
These are illustrative page figures, not a guaranteed offer, a current universal price or a promise that your copy will sell for any of them. Verify the page again at the time you buy or list, and check the underlying dated sales for the same region and release.
Region, currency and marketplace can change the comparison
PriceCharting exposes separate PAL and Japan guide paths, so do not apply a US-market number to a PAL game without checking the appropriate path. Currency also matters: record the currency used in every sale and do not silently convert a result into another currency as if the conversion were a valuation rule. Exchange rates, local demand, postage and marketplace fees can all affect what a buyer in your market will actually pay.
Compare sales from the same broad geography and marketplace where possible. If you must use another market, label it as a cross-market reference rather than an equivalent comparable. The available guides do not establish a universal cross-region adjustment or currency-conversion formula.
Condition and testing: describe what you can support
Inspect the disc before calling it tested
Vidsmark advises inspecting discs before describing them as tested and warns that some disc degradation cannot be repaired. Follow that advice conservatively: test the game on compatible hardware, state what you tested and when, and disclose visible scratches, cracks, label damage, disc rot or playback problems. If you did not test it, say so instead of implying that it works.

Separate cosmetic condition from function
A clean case does not prove a readable disc, and a scratched disc is not automatically unplayable. Describe the media, case, cover art and manual separately. Include clear photographs and mention missing pages, detached hinges, writing, water damage, replacement cases or reproduction artwork. These details help a buyer decide whether your sold comparables really match.
Do not invent an authentication conclusion
The reviewed pricing sources do not establish an authentication procedure. If a listing has unusual artwork, a questionable seal or an unfamiliar variant, treat it as uncertain and avoid presenting it as an ordinary original copy until you can substantiate the difference.
Pricing one game for sale
- Define the copy. Record title, region, print, contents, condition and test status.
- Collect comparable sold records. Prefer several recent sales with matching completeness and release.
- Choose an asking strategy. A fixed price can start near the center or upper part of the comparable range if you can wait; an auction exposes the item to current demand but does not guarantee a particular result.
- Account for the transaction. Decide whether your displayed price includes shipping and remember that marketplace fees, postage, taxes and returns affect your net proceeds. Do not compare your net amount with a guide’s gross estimate.
- Write a precise listing. Name the region and print, list every included component, disclose defects and testing, and use photographs that show the exact copy.
- Recheck before publishing. Sold data is volatile. A range that was reasonable earlier may move as new transactions appear.
Pricing a collection without wasting time
For a large shelf of games, begin with triage rather than researching every common title in depth. Vidsmark suggests separating games that merit individual checking from common sports titles, movie tie-ins and Greatest Hits copies that may be more efficiently bundled. That is a workflow suggestion, not a guarantee that a bundle will sell or that those categories have no valuable exceptions.
Individual-check pile
- Unusual or limited releases and titles with an obvious collector following
- Games with complete manuals, inserts, distinctive prints or sealed packaging
- Copies whose region, condition or variant is materially different from the rest of the collection
- Any title for which a quick sold search shows a wide spread or unusually high results
Bundle-review pile
- Common sports games with ordinary used condition
- Movie tie-ins and other titles that repeatedly sell at low individual amounts
- Greatest Hits copies when your local sold evidence shows little premium for listing them separately
Even in the bundle pile, inspect discs and remove damaged or incomplete items from a “working games” bundle. State exactly what is included and whether the games were tested. After sorting, check the individual pile first; that is where a mistaken variant match is most costly.

| Mistake | Why it produces a bad estimate | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Using the highest active listing | It records an expectation, not a completed transaction | Switch to sold or completed results and compare several records |
| Mixing black-label and Greatest Hits copies | They are different prints and may attract different demand | Match the print shown in the sale photos and description |
| Calling a manual-only copy CIB | CIB normally implies the case and expected contents as well | Use an item-and-manual category or explain the exact mismatch |
| Ignoring region | PAL, North American and Japan markets can have different supply and prices | Use the relevant regional guide path and comparable sales |
| Copying one spectacular sale | It may be a different edition, condition, bundle or listing error | Check the description and look for a cluster of matching sales |
| Calling an untested disc tested | Buyers cannot assess the functional risk accurately | Test it or disclose that it is untested, with visible defects listed |
| Assuming a guide price guarantees a sale | Guides estimate; they do not make an offer | Set expectations using a range and your chosen selling format |
A buyer’s checklist
- Does the listing show the same region and release or print as the sold comparables?
- Is the copy loose, item-and-box, item-and-manual, complete or sealed?
- Do the photographs show the exact disc, case, manual and artwork?
- Does the description disclose testing, scratches, cracks, replacement parts or missing inserts?
- Is the price supported by several recent sold records rather than one active listing?
- Are currency, shipping and marketplace differences clear?
- If the price is far above or below the comparable cluster, can the seller explain the variant or condition?
A seller’s listing checklist
- Put the exact title, platform, region and print in the headline.
- State whether the copy is loose, includes the box, includes the manual, is complete or is sealed.
- Describe disc, case, artwork and manual condition separately.
- Say what hardware or method was used for testing, or state that the game is untested.
- Photograph all included components and every significant defect.
- Choose a price or auction strategy after reviewing several matching sold transactions.
- State shipping and any limitations that affect the buyer’s total cost.
How to document your estimate
Keep a simple record for each title: the search terms, region, print, completeness category, sale dates, sale amounts, currency, shipping treatment and the reason each result was included or rejected. Add the date you checked the guide. This prevents you from accidentally combining a new sealed sale with a loose disc or repeating an old figure after the market has moved.

For a collection, a spreadsheet with one row per game makes the triage visible. Use separate columns for guide estimate, comparable-sale range, your intended asking price and the evidence date. The guide estimate and your asking price should never be presented as if either were a completed sale.
Bottom line for a realistic PS2 price
The reliable workflow is exact identification, matching sold evidence and an honest condition description. Start with the right regional and print variant, choose the correct loose, box, manual, complete or new category, inspect several dated transactions, and keep guide estimates separate from asking prices. For collections, research unusual and complete copies individually and consider bundling genuinely common titles only after checking their condition. That process gives a buyer a defensible offer and a seller a realistic starting range without pretending that any guide number guarantees the outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the loose or CIB price when my PS2 game has the manual but no case?
Neither label is an exact fit. Look for an item-and-manual category or comparable sold copies, and describe the missing case clearly. Do not call the game complete unless the case and expected contents are included.
Are PAL PS2 games priced the same as US games?
No universal adjustment is established. Use PAL guide data and PAL sold transactions where possible, and record currency and marketplace before comparing results.
Can I price a game from the highest eBay listing I can find?
No. An active listing is an asking price. Use completed or sold transactions and inspect several matching records instead.
Does a price-guide number guarantee what my game will sell for?
No. It is an estimate that can change as new sales are recorded. Your actual result depends on variant, completeness, condition, timing, geography and selling format.
Should common sports and movie games in a collection be sold individually?
Not automatically. Triage them first; bundling may be more efficient for genuinely common copies, but inspect condition and check local sold evidence before deciding.
