Before paying for an item advertised online, check the exact product and its condition, the seller’s identity, independent evidence for its claims, and the full purchase and return terms. These checks can expose weak evidence and avoidable risks, but they cannot prove quality or guarantee a good outcome. The guidance below draws on U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) consumer advice; laws and remedies vary outside the United States.
1. Identify who is selling the item
An ad may lead to a retailer’s own store, a marketplace listing, or a third-party seller operating on a marketplace. Check which one applies: protections and complaint routes may differ. The FTC advises consumers to “search online to learn more about the site, seller, and any items you’re considering.” (FTC, Buying From an Online Marketplace.)

- Look for the business or seller name and usable contact details, then search the name and site with terms such as “complaint” or “scam.” Search results are clues, not a definitive vetting service.
- If the sale is through a marketplace, read the terms that apply to this seller and item. Find out how to report a problem, what the marketplace will consider, and whether there is a claim deadline; do not assume every marketplace purchase is covered.
- Keep the seller’s identity and the applicable marketplace terms with your purchase records.
2. Verify the exact product and its condition
Compare like with like. Match the brand and model number, or the full specifications if no model number is given. A broad product name or similar-looking photo may describe a different version from the one you are comparing elsewhere.

Check condition labels such as “new,” “used,” “refurbished,” “vintage,” “open box,” “close-out,” or “as is”; they can mean the item is not new or may have different limitations. Note the stated specifications, included parts, warranty information if provided, and whether the seller is showing the actual item. For a unique used item, stock photos do not establish its condition or that the seller possesses it; ask for clear photos of the item itself when its condition matters.

Compare the same model and condition across independent retailers or reputable expert reviewers. A very low price on an expensive branded item can be a counterfeit warning, but price alone does not prove that an item is counterfeit or poor quality.
3. Check reviews without treating them as proof
Star averages can help you decide what to investigate, but they do not verify a product or seller. Read recent high and low reviews on more than one site, and consider who wrote them, the reviewer’s history, the platform, and whether an incentive was disclosed.

Look for patterns, including an unusual cluster of reviews in a short period, but do not assume you can identify a fake review by appearance alone. The FTC says fake reviews are not always obvious; they can be positive or negative. (FTC, How To Evaluate Online Reviews.) Reviews are most useful when they describe specific, relevant experience with the same product or seller, not merely repeat broad claims.
4. Ask what evidence supports the ad’s claims
Separate a claim from proof of that claim. An advertisement may make express claims, or imply something through its wording, images, and presentation. FTC guidance says advertisers need a reasonable basis for material express and implied claims consumers take from an ad; this does not mean the FTC has verified each ad or certifies the product. For claims about performance, features, effectiveness, price, or safety, look for evidence that applies to the exact product and the claim being made. Be especially cautious with health or safety claims: a testimonial is not a substitute for appropriate objective evidence. For product-specific risks, consult relevant authoritative sources or the regulator or standards body responsible for that category.
5. Compare the real cost and the terms
Before checkout, calculate the total rather than comparing headline prices. Include shipping, handling, tax, and any other stated fees. Check whether a discount or deal has conditions, and compare only listings for the same model, specification, and condition.

Read the delivery and return terms before paying. Confirm the promised delivery timing, whether the item can be returned, the return deadline, who pays return postage, and whether restocking fees or other conditions apply. If no shipping time is stated, FTC consumer guidance says a U.S. rule generally requires a seller to ship within 30 days after receiving the specified order information or permission to charge. 6. Pay with a method that gives you recourse
The FTC recommends paying by credit card when possible because legal protections may help with certain billing, delivery, or other transaction problems. The protections and dispute process depend on the issuer, the facts, and the applicable jurisdiction; check your card issuer’s instructions promptly if something goes wrong.

7. Save evidence before you place the order
Keep a copy or screenshot of the ad and listing, including the model and condition, price, fees, delivery promise, return policy, seller identity, and any important claims. Save the receipt, order details, marketplace terms that apply, and written replies from the seller. These records can help you check what was promised and explain a problem to the seller, marketplace, or payment provider.

When choosing among listings for the same item, compare the evidence and terms side by side—not just the advertised price.
