The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) offers general consumer guidance for these checks; it has not evaluated the accuracy of any particular AI shopping assistant.
1. Turn the AI recommendation into claims you can verify
Copy the product name and exact model number, then separate factual details from subjective praise. “Includes a 65W charger” is checkable; “best for students” is an opinion that needs a clear basis.

- Checkable details: model number, dimensions, materials, included accessories, compatibility, warranty, and advertised performance.
- Judgments to investigate: claims that it is the best, most reliable, or best value. Look for the criteria and evidence behind the comparison.
Check important factual claims against the manufacturer’s documentation and independent expert sources. Search the exact product or company name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “scam,” as the FTC recommends in its online shopping guidance. A chatbot’s confident wording does not establish that a claim is true.
2. Make sure the listing is for the product you checked
Product names can cover several versions, and a marketplace listing may not match the item described in a recommendation. Compare these details before ordering:
- Manufacturer and exact model number
- Size, configuration, included accessories, and compatibility
- Condition and any qualifications in the description
- Seller identity and the terms for delivery and returns
Read the fine print. Terms such as “refurbished,” “vintage,” or “close-out” may describe an item that is not in perfect condition. Compare the full cost, including shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees—not just the displayed price. The FTC’s online shopping advice covers these checks.
3. Look beyond the star average
Check customer reviews across more than one relevant source, such as retailer and review sites, search results, app stores, or social platforms. For products with useful expert coverage, compare assessments from sources you trust that explain their methods and offer impartial evaluations.
Read individual reviews rather than relying on the average. Consider who wrote each review, where it appears, the reviewer’s history, and when it was posted. A cluster of reviews arriving in a short period, or a new account reviewing only one product, can be a reason to look more closely—not proof of manipulation.

The FTC’s consumer page “How To Evaluate Online Reviews” cautions: “Don’t assume that, just by looking, you can spot the difference between a real review and a fake one.” The FTC also advises shoppers: “And don’t rely on star ratings alone because some reviews and ratings are fake or misleading.”
4. Treat badges and review-page signals cautiously
Look for labels saying a reviewer received a free product or another incentive, but remember that sites do not all use the same disclosures. A disclosure is useful context, not a guarantee that a review is accurate or inaccurate.
Check who runs a comparison or “best product” page and how it selects items. A manufacturer-run page or a ranking limited to sellers who pay may not be an impartial comparison. Likewise, do not treat a “verified purchase” label, polished prose, a badge, or an unusual writing style as conclusive evidence unless the site explains what the signal means.

5. Compare candidates using the same evidence
If you are choosing between products or sellers, use a consistent checklist rather than an invented authenticity score. The FTC does not prescribe a universal weighting system for these factors.

For each important claim, note the source and whether it independently confirms the claim. If a detail cannot be confirmed, treat it as unverified rather than filling the gap with the chatbot’s wording.

6. Report concerns without treating suspicion as proof
If a review seems suspicious, use the platform’s reporting option and follow its current instructions. FTC consumer guidance also points shoppers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov for suspected fake reviews. A report is a way to raise a concern; it does not establish that a particular review is fake.
The FTC’s rule on reviews and testimonials addresses specified business conduct involving fake or false reviews, including AI-generated fake reviews. Its staff Q&A notes that unusually rapid or concentrated review activity, or reviews that refer to the wrong product, can be red flags for businesses; context matters, so these patterns are reasons to investigate rather than a verdict about an individual review.
