The reliable way to answer “Can my PC run this game?” is to open that specific game’s store listing, find its System Requirements section, and compare every listed operating-system and hardware requirement with your computer’s actual specifications. A match is only a compatibility signal—not a promise of a particular frame rate, graphics setting, or trouble-free launch.
Start with the game’s own listing
System requirements are game-specific. Do not use the requirements for another title, an older edition, or a similarly named game as a substitute. Publishers can choose different operating-system versions, processor models, graphics hardware, memory amounts, and storage requirements for each release.

On Steam, open the game’s Store page and scroll to the section labeled System Requirements. Steam says that this section shows the game’s requirements and compatible operating systems. Read the complete listing rather than stopping after the first “minimum” line: the operating-system requirement and each hardware category are part of the comparison.
If the game is sold through another storefront, use that game’s own current product page or the publisher’s official listing. A requirement copied from a search result, retailer description, forum post, or a different edition may be incomplete or out of date. The page for the exact game and edition is the reference that matters.

Record your PC’s specifications before comparing
You cannot make a meaningful comparison until you know the actual components and operating-system details in the computer you will use. Write down the model or version information exactly as it appears in your PC’s system information, manufacturer documentation, or hardware records. Avoid relying on a broad description such as “gaming PC,” “16 GB machine,” or “recent laptop.”
The sources of the requirements do not establish one universal Windows procedure for finding every specification across all Windows versions. The practical rule is therefore to identify the details your own computer reports, then compare those details directly with the categories the game lists. If a category is missing from your records, treat the comparison as incomplete instead of assuming that the component is sufficient.
At minimum, collect the following when the game listing provides them:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Operating system: the operating-system name, version, and any architecture detail the listing requires.
- Processor: the exact CPU model, not only a marketing label such as “Core” or “Ryzen.”
- Graphics hardware: the exact GPU model. Integrated and discrete graphics should not be treated as interchangeable names.
- Memory: the installed system memory amount, usually expressed in GB when a listing uses that unit.
- Storage: the available space or drive requirement stated by the game, if one is listed.
Only compare categories that the listing actually specifies. Not every publisher presents the same categories, and “minimum” and “recommended” do not have a universal meaning across all games.
Use a line-by-line comparison
Put the store listing and your PC’s specification record side by side. For each requirement, classify your computer as a clear match, close to the requirement, below it, or unknown. The classification should be based on the exact model or version, not on a vague impression of age or brand.
| Comparison area | What to check | What a match tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Whether your current OS and required version or architecture are supported by the game listing | Your platform appears compatible with the stated software requirement; it does not establish performance |
| CPU | Whether your processor meets the model or level named by the listing | Your processor is not obviously below the published CPU baseline; it does not predict frame rate |
| GPU | Whether your graphics processor matches or exceeds the listed model or level | Your graphics hardware is not obviously below the published baseline; it does not prove a graphics preset or resolution |
| Memory | Whether installed system memory meets the amount stated | The listed memory threshold appears satisfied; it does not guarantee that other components will keep up |
| Storage | Whether the required space is available for the installation, when the listing gives a storage figure | There appears to be room for the stated installation; it says nothing about rendering performance |
If your computer is comfortably beyond every applicable requirement, confidence is higher than when it merely reaches the line. If one component is at or near the requirement, mark the result as uncertain even when the other components are stronger. If a required category is below the listing or cannot be identified, do not treat the game as a safe purchase on the information available.

Understand minimum and recommended requirements
Minimum is a baseline, not a performance promise
“Minimum” normally identifies the lower configuration the publisher chose to list, but the label does not tell you what frame rate, image quality, resolution, loading behavior, or launch reliability to expect. Steam Support explicitly warns that a machine at or near the stated requirements may experience performance and/or launch issues.
That warning matters even when every line appears to match. A PC that barely reaches the minimum can have much less margin for background activity, driver differences, operating-system changes, or demanding scenes than a PC comfortably above it. The listing alone does not convert the minimum line into a guaranteed playable experience.
Recommended is still not a universal guarantee
A “recommended” configuration is another publisher-defined reference point. It may indicate a more suitable target than minimum, but it still does not state a universal frame-rate number or guarantee the settings you prefer. Treat it as stronger evidence than a minimum-only match, not as a contract for a particular experience.
Never infer settings from the labels alone
Requirements do not, by themselves, tell you whether the game will run at a specific resolution, graphics preset, refresh rate, or frame rate. Those outcomes depend on the game, the complete configuration, and conditions that the requirement table does not quantify. Keep the comparison focused on compatibility and risk rather than inventing an FPS estimate from the words “minimum” or “recommended.”
Evaluate how close the match is
Distance from the published requirement is a useful confidence measure. Use the following decision framework after checking every listed category:
| Result | Interpretation | Buying decision |
|---|---|---|
| All listed categories comfortably exceed the requirement | The PC has visible headroom on the information available, although the listing still does not promise a frame rate or setting | Lower compatibility risk, but retain realistic expectations |
| All listed categories meet the requirement but are close | The configuration is at the boundary Steam cautions about | Consider the purchase uncertain rather than guaranteed |
| One or more categories are below the requirement | The PC does not satisfy the published baseline for that category | Do not assume the game will launch or perform acceptably |
| A category cannot be verified | You do not have enough information for a complete comparison | Find the missing specification before buying |
This framework deliberately avoids pretending that a single score can summarize a PC. A strong processor cannot erase a graphics shortfall, and extra memory cannot establish operating-system compatibility. Judge each listed requirement separately, then consider the weakest or unknown area.

Account for the experience you actually want
Two people can look at the same requirement table and need different levels of confidence. Someone willing to accept lower image quality and variable performance may tolerate more uncertainty than someone expecting a specific high-refresh experience. The published requirements do not record that preference for you.
- If your priority is simply avoiding an obvious incompatibility, verify the operating system and every listed hardware category first.
- If you care about consistent performance, place more weight on headroom above the requirements and be cautious about a machine that is merely at or near them.
- If a particular resolution, graphics quality, or frame rate is essential, do not infer that target from the requirement labels; the available listing does not establish it.
Keep this distinction clear: “the PC appears to satisfy the published requirements” is a compatibility assessment, while “the game will deliver my preferred experience” is a stronger claim that the requirements alone cannot prove.
A careful pre-purchase workflow
- Identify the exact game and edition. Confirm the title, edition, and platform you intend to buy. Requirements for another release are not a substitute.
- Open the current store listing. On Steam, use the game’s Store page and scroll to System Requirements.
- Read the operating-system line. Compare your current OS, version, and any architecture requirement with the supported information shown for the game.
- Transcribe every hardware category. Note the CPU, graphics, memory, storage, and any other category the publisher lists. Do not silently omit a line because it seems less important.
- Collect your PC’s exact details. Use the system information available on your computer or its manufacturer and hardware records. If a model or version is unknown, stop and resolve that gap.
- Compare one category at a time. Mark each item as comfortably above, near, below, or unknown. Avoid replacing a model comparison with a general age or brand judgment.
- Separate minimum from recommended. Record which level you meet. A minimum match is not a performance or launch guarantee.
- Assess distance and goals. A close match carries more uncertainty than substantial headroom, and your desired quality or frame rate may require more confidence than the listing can provide.
- Make the purchase decision. Buy only when the remaining uncertainty and expected experience are acceptable to you. If a required category is below or unknown, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming success.
- Keep the purchase fallback in mind. If you buy through Steam, review the current refund terms before purchasing so you understand the applicable conditions.
Why a PC that matches can still have problems
Steam Support’s wording is deliberately cautious: “Please compare your machine’s specs against the game’s system requirements on the store page, and note that a machine at or near system requirements may experience performance and/or launch issues when playing.” The warning covers both performance and starting the game.

A close match may leave little margin, and an apparently complete match still does not specify a frame rate or graphics quality. The listing also may not describe every factor that affects a particular computer’s result.
Do not “fix” uncertainty by borrowing confidence from another game. A computer that handles one title does not automatically satisfy a different title’s operating-system or hardware requirements. Recheck the exact listing whenever you evaluate another game.

Stopping at the minimum line
Minimum requirements are easy to read as a pass/fail test, but Steam cautions that a system at or near them may encounter performance or launch issues. Record how close the match is instead of writing “guaranteed.”

Recommended remains a publisher-defined guideline. It does not state a universal FPS, resolution, or graphics preset, so do not convert it into one.
Using a generic PC description
Terms such as “modern laptop” or “gaming desktop” do not identify the exact CPU, GPU, memory, storage, or operating-system version. Obtain the model-level details before comparing.
Ignoring an unknown field
An unknown requirement is not the same as a match. Mark the comparison incomplete and find the missing information.
Applying Steam’s refund policy to another seller
Steam’s stated refund terms apply to eligible Steam purchases. They do not establish the policy of another store, publisher, or reseller.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

For eligible Steam game purchases, Valve’s standard policy states a refund window of within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of playtime. The policy has conditions and exceptions, and its stated page was last updated in 2024. Check the current policy and the terms attached to your purchase rather than treating the two figures as an unconditional guarantee.
Best Value
The refund option is a conditional fallback, not a replacement for checking requirements. It also applies to Steam purchases; it should not be presented as protection for a game bought through a different seller.
Worked decision examples without guessing performance
Example: a complete, comfortable match
The listing names a supported operating system and specifies CPU, graphics, memory, and storage requirements. Your records show a supported OS and hardware that is clearly above every listed line. The correct conclusion is that the PC appears to have a lower compatibility risk than a borderline machine. It is still not valid to promise a frame rate or graphics preset from that comparison alone.
Example: a borderline match
Your OS is supported, but the processor and graphics model are close to the listed minimum. Mark the result as uncertain. Steam’s warning specifically covers systems at or near the requirements, so the responsible conclusion is not “it will run,” but “the listing does not provide enough confidence for a guaranteed experience.”
Example: an unresolved comparison
You can identify the operating system and memory, but the exact graphics model is unknown. Because the listing requires a graphics comparison, the check is incomplete. Find that model before deciding; do not substitute the computer’s general product name.
Example: a clear shortfall
Your PC is below one of the listed hardware requirements even though the other categories match. The published baseline is not satisfied for that component. Do not assume that strength elsewhere cancels the shortfall or that the game will launch reliably.
Questions to answer before clicking Buy
- Am I looking at the exact game, edition, and platform I intend to purchase?
- Did I read the complete System Requirements section rather than only the minimum label?
- Is my current operating system and required version or architecture supported?
- Do I know the exact CPU and graphics models, installed memory, and available storage when those categories are listed?
- Is every category comfortably above, merely near, below, or still unknown?
- Am I avoiding a frame-rate or graphics-quality promise that the requirements do not make?
- If this is a Steam purchase, have I checked the current refund conditions and recognized that they are conditional?
The practical conclusion
Check the individual game’s current store listing, compare its operating-system and listed hardware requirements with your PC’s exact specifications, and treat the result as a confidence assessment. A comfortable match is more reassuring than a borderline one, but neither minimum nor recommended requirements alone guarantee a particular performance level or a trouble-free launch.
