How to Check Official Weather Alerts and Flood Warnings in Spain

By Freedom251 Team · · 4 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For official weather warnings in Spain, start with AEMET’s Avisos meteorológicos and select the warning area for your location. Read the hazard, severity, affected area and valid period, then check instructions from the relevant Protección Civil authority separately. For river conditions, use the basin’s SAIH service; for mapped flood exposure, consult MITECO’s SNCZI viewer.

Check a weather warning for your location

  1. Open AEMET’s official warning page. Go to Avisos meteorológicos and choose the relevant autonomous community, province or warning zone.
  2. Read the warning details. Check which phenomenon is forecast, its severity, the area affected and the period for which the warning is valid. Warning thresholds vary by hazard and warning area, so use the detailed information for your location rather than relying on a color alone.
  3. Check again for updates. Warnings and their valid periods can change as conditions develop. Use the current details on AEMET’s page rather than assuming an earlier check remains current.

AEMET also provides RSS/Atom and CAP feeds for Spain, autonomous communities, provinces, islands in the Canary and Balearic Islands, and warning zones. These can help you monitor changes in a feed reader; AEMET says the feeds update when warning predictions change. Feed information is available from the AEMET warnings page.

Understand the warning colors

AEMET’s Meteoalerta plan, version 9 dated 10 January 2025, uses green, yellow, orange and red. The colors communicate meteorological danger; they are not, by themselves, a complete instruction to evacuate or take another specific action.

Level Meaning in AEMET’s plan Guidance
Green No warning level is described in the supplied plan summary. Follow current local information and the details shown for the area.
Yellow Low danger; effects may be possible for exposed or vulnerable people. Stay attentive to the forecast and conditions.
Orange Important danger, with possible serious impacts. Take precautions and keep up with updated forecasts.
Red Extraordinary danger, with potentially very serious or catastrophic impacts. Take preventive measures and act according to the authorities’ directions.

These descriptions and recommendations come from AEMET’s Plan Meteoalerta, version 9, dated 10 January 2025. The practical meaning still depends on the specific hazard and warning zone.

Check civil-protection instructions separately

An AEMET meteorological warning and a civil-protection pre-alert or alert are different instruments. AEMET forecasts hazardous weather; civil-protection authorities assess expected impacts and issue public instructions under their own procedures. Their levels can differ. Hydrological or ground conditions can also justify a flood pre-alert or alert even when rainfall has not crossed AEMET’s meteorological warning threshold.

For that reason, do not treat an AEMET color as a substitute for instructions from the competent national, regional or local Protección Civil authority. Check those channels for current protective actions, including any local directions that apply to your area.

For river conditions, check the basin’s SAIH

For observed hydrological conditions, use the Sistema Automático de Información Hidrológica (SAIH) associated with the relevant river basin. MITECO’s SAIH overview links to basin systems, which provide readings such as rainfall, river levels or flows, and reservoir levels or volumes.

SAIH observations complement a weather forecast: they show conditions in a basin, while AEMET warnings describe forecast weather hazards. Read the observations alongside civil-protection instructions; a measurement page is not a replacement for public safety directions.

For mapped flood exposure, use MITECO’s SNCZI

MITECO’s National Flood Zone Cartography System (SNCZI) is the official mapping source for fluvial and marine flood-prone areas. Its map viewer displays flood-related layers and probability information, making it useful for understanding mapped exposure and planning.

The SNCZI is not a live warning feed, and its maps do not cover every location. MITECO cautions that land near a river that is not shown as a mapped flood area should not be assumed to be free of flood risk. Use current weather warnings, hydrological information and local authority guidance when conditions are developing.

Which service should you use?

Service What it tells you Geographic focus and time role
AEMET Avisos Forecast meteorological hazards and warning levels. Warning area; current warnings and their stated valid periods.
SAIH Hydrological and hydraulic observations, such as rainfall, river levels or flows, and reservoir conditions. River basin; observations complement the forecast.
SNCZI Mapped fluvial and marine flood-prone areas and related layers. Map location; planning and exposure information, not a live alert.
Protección Civil and other competent authorities Public alerts and protective instructions based on expected impacts and local procedures. Relevant national, regional or local jurisdiction; follow current directions.

What to do during an active flood threat

Protección Civil advises avoiding flooded areas whether you are on foot or in a vehicle. Move away from rivers, streams and low-lying areas toward higher ground, and stay informed through radio and other media. Contact 112 for emergencies, not for routine forecast checks. See Protección Civil’s flood guidance.

How far ahead do AEMET warnings look?

AEMET’s national warnings page describes Meteoalerta information up to 72 hours ahead, while a separate AEMET overview says up to 60 hours. Because the official pages give different horizons, do not assume one lead time applies universally. Check the live warning page and the valid period displayed for each warning.
