Check the official travel-advice service of the government relevant to your citizenship or residence, then look up every destination and transit country on your itinerary. Read the detailed written guidance—not just a warning level or map—and verify it again shortly before departure. An advisory is a source of risk guidance, not a final decision about whether you can board or enter a country.
1. Start with the government service relevant to you
Use the official travel-advice service of the government whose citizenship or residence rules apply to you. Advice is written for the issuing government’s intended audience and reflects its perspective. The U.S. Department of State describes its advisories as risk reports for U.S. citizens, nationals, and legal residents: U.S. Department of State travel advisories.

If you are unsure which service to use, a government travel-advice page may also point to other countries’ official services. Canada links to advice from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States: Government of Canada travel advice and advisories.

Search for every country where you will spend time, including countries where you only change planes. Also inspect any regional warning that applies to a city, province, border area, or other part of your route. Canada says travellers are responsible for checking advice for all places they visit, including transit locations; destination pages may include region-specific guidance (Government of Canada travel advice and advisories).

3. Read the full guidance, not only the level or map
A headline level or map is a quick signal, not enough to decide what advice means for your trip. Read the written risk guidance and the practical sections. Canada’s destination pages organize information under headings such as risk levels, safety and security, entry and exit requirements, health, laws and culture, and natural disasters and climate. Canada also says the written text in its Risk levels section is the official source and takes precedence over the map (Government of Canada travel advice and advisories).
Look for the specific risk, where it applies, and what the government recommends travellers do. If you compare advisories from more than one government, compare their intended audiences, the regions covered, the risks and recommended actions, and the update dates. Do not average different advisory levels into a single score; the underlying guidance and your itinerary matter more.

4. Check when the advice was updated, then recheck it
Review advice while planning and again just before leaving. Continue monitoring official updates during your trip because conditions can change. Canada recommends checking its advice at least twice—during planning and just before departure—and says its information is reviewed and updated as conditions change (Government of Canada travel advice and advisories; Government of Canada pre-travel checklist).

Check the destination page’s update date as well as its content. The Canadian destination listing displays last-updated timestamps, which can help you identify when to inspect an entry closely: Government of Canada destination listing. A timestamp is a cue to review the live page, not a guarantee that conditions have remained unchanged since then.

Where available and relevant to you, use the issuing government’s alert service for updates during travel. Canada says security-impacting updates can be sent through Registration of Canadians Abroad: Registration of Canadians Abroad. Eligibility and enrollment rules differ, so check the service’s official page.
6. Verify boarding and entry requirements separately
A travel advisory is not a complete boarding or immigration decision. Check entry and exit requirements using an official destination source for your passport and circumstances; requirements can differ by nationality and other details.
