How to Check NVMe SSD Health and Actual Read and Write Speeds

On Windows, check the SSD’s health log first, then benchmark the correct drive with a named workload. Health indicators can reveal current warnings, but they cannot guarantee a drive will not fail; benchmark results describe only the settings and conditions used.

1. Identify the SSD you want to check

Before interpreting a health report or running a test, confirm the utility is showing the physical SSD you mean to inspect. Compare its model and capacity with the drive in question. CrystalDiskInfo documents model, disk size, health status, temperature, firmware and interface information in its interface; see the CrystalDiskInfo product page.

This matters especially if a computer has more than one drive. A benchmark run against the wrong disk can produce a valid result for a different device.

2. Check the health fields, not just the summary label

NVMe health information is reported in a defined health log. Utilities may label or summarize fields differently, so inspect the underlying indicators where the tool makes them available. Microsoft documents the NVMe health log fields in NVME_HEALTH_INFO_LOG.

SABRENT USB-C NVMe Enclosure & Reader, M.2 PCIe SSD, 10Gbps (EC-PNVO) | Tool-free M.2 PCIe case for 2230-2280; USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps; aluminum cooling; external nvme enclosure; m.2 usb adapter
  • Flip-Open Tool-Free Design: Open the cover, insert your NVMe SSD, lock it in place, and close—no screws or tools required. Fast and simple for upgrades, cloning, troubleshooting, and portable tech work.
  • Cooler 10Gbps Performance: The aluminum enclosure presses the thermal pad directly against your SSD for better heat transfer and more stable 10Gbps speeds than slide-in enclosures. Ideal for long transfers and heavy workloads.
  • NVMe Only for Maximum Speed: Supports M.2 NVMe SSDs in sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 up to at least 8TB. Not compatible with M.2 SATA SSDs.
  • USB C Plug-and-Play: Connect with USB C for up to 10Gbps using USB 3.2 Gen 2. No drivers or external power needed. Works with laptops, desktops, gaming handhelds, and USB C devices.
  • Portable and Durable Aluminum Build: Reinforced ABS frame with an aluminum alloy top keeps your SSD protected and cool. Slim, lightweight, and perfect for creators, gamers, and anyone needing fast portable storage.
  • Critical Warning: A bit field showing current warning conditions, which can include low available spare, a temperature threshold, degraded reliability or read-only status. A cleared warning bit means that condition is not currently reported; it is not a forecast of future reliability.
  • Available Spare and Available Spare Threshold: Compare the reported spare value with its threshold. A value below the threshold is a warning condition.
  • Percentage Used: A vendor-specific estimate of how much of the subsystem’s endurance has been consumed, based on actual use and the manufacturer’s endurance prediction. It may exceed 100. Microsoft notes that 100 indicates estimated endurance has been consumed, but does not necessarily mean the subsystem has failed.
  • Temperature: The log includes composite temperature and temperature-warning information. Interpret it using the SSD’s supported limits and model-specific documentation rather than applying one universal cutoff.
  • Media errors and error-log entries: Consider these alongside warning flags and any symptoms. An isolated count does not provide a universal pass/fail rule; consult the SSD maker’s guidance for the specific model.
  • Data Units Read/Written: These are cumulative host data counters, not current transfer speeds. Microsoft defines the log’s units as 512-byte units reported in thousands and rounded up.

3. Respond to critical warnings before benchmarking

If the drive reports a critical warning, or Windows indicates that it is read-only, prioritize important files over a speed test. Microsoft explains that a read-only storage device can still be read but cannot be written to, and documents what to do about a critical warning in its critical-warning support article.

  1. Copy important accessible data to another drive or a trusted backup location.
  2. Record the warning and relevant health fields, including the SSD model and capacity.
  3. Follow the SSD manufacturer’s support guidance for the particular model and warning. Avoid treating a generic health label as a substitute for that guidance.

4. Benchmark the correct drive with CrystalDiskMark

CrystalDiskMark measures performance under configurable workloads; it does not produce one universal speed for an SSD. Its official product page describes output in MB/s, GB/s, IOPS or average latency and settings such as block size, queue depth and thread count.

  • Compact & Portable: This ultra-slim aluminium external NVMe enclosure with extra silicone case is portable yet durable, and much easier to carry with this M.2 to USB adapter, making it ideal for travelling
  1. Open CrystalDiskMark and select the target drive, verifying it against the model and capacity you checked earlier.
  2. Choose the number of runs, test size and test profile. Record those settings with the results; the publisher’s settings guide explains configurable options.
  3. Run the test and note read and write results separately. Keep sequential throughput separate from random IOPS or latency results.
  4. When comparing results, use the same drive, profile, test size and data pattern, and keep the system conditions as comparable as practical.

5. Understand what the speed numbers mean

A large-block sequential test answers a different question from small random input/output. CrystalDiskMark’s official NVMe SSD profile includes 1 MiB sequential Q8T1 and 128 KiB sequential Q32T1 tests, as well as 4 KiB random tests at different queue and thread settings. These are distinct workloads, not interchangeable measures of “the” SSD speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sequential read/write: Throughput for largely continuous data transfers, usually shown in MB/s or GB/s.
  • Random read/write: Performance for smaller, less-contiguous operations; results may be shown as IOPS or latency as well as throughput.
  • Queue depth and threads: Settings affect how much work is presented to the drive concurrently and can change the result.
  • Test size and data pattern: The test-file size and whether data is random or zero-filled can affect some SSD results.

CrystalDiskMark’s FAQ lists test-file size and position, fragmentation, controller and CPU speed among factors that influence results. Do not compare a sequential MB/s figure with random IOPS or latency as though they measure the same workload.

6. Make a fair comparison

Record enough context for someone else to understand what was measured:

  • The target drive’s model and capacity.
  • The benchmark profile and the read and write results.
  • Test size, number of runs and relevant block, queue and thread settings.
  • Whether the test used random or zero-filled data.
  • The system and drive path used for the test, including any connection or controller that could affect results.

Repeat tests only under comparable conditions if you want to compare them. An advertised maximum is not a promise that every computer or workload will achieve that number; a meaningful expectation depends on the exact SSD, capacity, interface and link configuration, workload and system.
