NJ TRANSIT separates planned schedules from current train status. Choosing the right tool first prevents a common mistake: treating a timetable as if it were a live platform display.

How to find a scheduled train between two stations
The schedule search is the right starting point when you need to know which service is planned for an origin and destination. NJ TRANSIT’s Schedules and Fares area provides station-to-station schedules for the current weekday or weekend and also supports itinerary planning.

On the NJ TRANSIT website
- Open the NJ TRANSIT website homepage.
- Choose the train schedule search rather than the real-time station departure control. The homepage keeps these functions separate.
- Enter the station where you will board as the origin.
- Enter the station where you will leave the train as the destination.
- Choose the applicable day type, such as the current weekday or the weekend, when that choice is presented.
- Submit the search and review the itineraries and scheduled train times.
The result is a planned schedule for the selected stations and day type. It is useful for deciding which departure fits your trip, but it is not the same as the current station display. After selecting a likely train, check its live status in DepartureVision before heading to the station.
In the NJ TRANSIT app
- Open the official NJ TRANSIT app.
- Use its trip-planning or schedule feature.
- Enter your origin and destination stations and select the relevant travel day or day type.
- Review the proposed itineraries and scheduled departures.
NJ TRANSIT says riders can plan trips and view schedules without signing in. That makes the app useful even if you do not have an account. Signing in becomes relevant when you want to purchase, store or manage tickets; it is not required simply to view a schedule.
How to check real-time departures, tracks and arrivals
DepartureVision is NJ TRANSIT’s station departure tool. It is designed to reproduce the useful parts of a station departure screen on a web-enabled mobile device or desktop computer. NJ TRANSIT describes it as showing train arrival and departure times and track assignments.

Use DepartureVision on the website
- Open the NJ TRANSIT website.
- Select the real-time train departure option, commonly presented as DepartureVision or a station departure display.
- Choose the station where you plan to board.
- Read the listed trains, their displayed arrival or departure times and any track assignment shown.
- Select the specific train when you need more detail.
Selecting a train reveals the stations it serves and estimated arrival information. This is useful when you need to confirm that a listed service stops at your destination or to see the expected timing at another station on the route.
Use DepartureVision in the app
The same station-status information is available through the official NJ TRANSIT app. Open the app’s real-time train information, choose the departure station and inspect the current list. If a train entry can be opened, use it to view the route stops and estimated arrivals.
Check the station display as close to departure as practical. The schedule search tells you what service is planned; DepartureVision tells you what the station is currently showing, including the track assignment when one is displayed. If the two views differ, treat the live station display as the information to investigate immediately and allow time for a changed track or estimate.

Understanding scheduled times versus live estimates
A timetable is a plan
A station-to-station schedule is the planning layer. It helps you compare departures for a weekday or weekend and build an itinerary from your origin to your destination. The times are associated with the selected schedule, not a promise that the train is currently operating exactly on that timetable.

DepartureVision is the operational layer. It lists the trains currently associated with the selected station and displays arrival and departure times, along with track assignments where available. Opening a train gives you its route stops and estimated arrival information.
Why you should use both
A practical check has two stages:
- Use the schedule search to choose a sensible planned train.
- Use DepartureVision to confirm the current station display, track and estimate before you travel.
This avoids relying on a static timetable when a service change affects the train you intended to take, while still giving you a complete view of your available planned options.
How to set up My Transit Alerts for a regular trip
My Transit Alerts is intended for riders who want NJ TRANSIT to notify them about changes affecting a selected rail trip. Notifications can be delivered as app notifications, text messages or email.
Choose the trip details
- Open the My Transit Alerts setup in the NJ TRANSIT app or the agency’s service-update tools.
- Select the origin station.
- Select the destination station.
- Choose an approximate departure time.
- Choose an approximate return time if you need alerts for the trip home as well.
- Select the trains you want to follow.
- Choose whether updates should arrive through app push notifications, text or email.
- Save the alert selections and verify that the chosen trip matches your normal journey.
The setup is trip-specific. Selecting only a station does not describe the journey as precisely as selecting the origin, destination, approximate times and trains. Review those choices if your work hours or usual departure changes.

When alerts are most useful
- Regular commutes where the same origin and destination are used repeatedly.
- Trips for which a service change would require leaving earlier or choosing another scheduled train.
- Return journeys that need a separate approximate return time.
Alerts supplement, rather than replace, a station check. When you are already traveling, open DepartureVision for the station’s current display and track information.

A reliable check before leaving home
Use this sequence when the exact departure matters:
- Plan: Search the origin and destination in the website schedule tool or the app.
- Select: Choose the scheduled departure that fits your itinerary.
- Verify: Open DepartureVision for the station where you will board.
- Inspect: Confirm the listed train, displayed time and track assignment.
- Trace: Open the train entry to check its route stops and estimated arrival information.
- Monitor: If the trip is a recurring one, configure My Transit Alerts for future service-change notifications.
This order matters. Starting with live departures without first deciding your origin, destination and intended service can make it harder to tell whether a train is the right one. Starting with only the timetable can leave you unaware of a current change shown on the station board.
Using the website and app without an account
NJ TRANSIT’s app FAQ states that riders can plan trips and view schedules without signing in. You therefore do not need to create an account merely to look up a scheduled train or plan an itinerary.

Keep the distinction in mind when the app asks you to sign in: the request is tied to ticket management, not basic schedule viewing.
For a quick lookup on a shared or borrowed device, the website’s schedule search and DepartureVision provide the same two essential stages: planned service and current station information. The app becomes more convenient when you want those functions together, ticket features or My Transit Alerts.
What to do when the information does not match
The schedule lists a train that is not on the station board
Confirm that you selected the correct origin station in DepartureVision and that you are viewing the intended day and service period in the schedule search. Then open the live station list again and inspect nearby departures. A schedule search describes planned service; the station display reflects the current information available for that station.

The train appears, but no track is shown
DepartureVision displays track assignments when they are available. If an entry has no track assignment, continue checking the station display and follow the station’s posted information rather than assuming a track.

Select the train in DepartureVision. The detailed view shows the stations it serves. Compare that stop list with your destination before boarding.
The displayed estimate changes
Use the current DepartureVision entry as your live reference and recheck the train’s detailed estimated arrivals. If you set up My Transit Alerts, review any notification delivered through your selected channel as an additional indication of a service change.
You cannot access ticket functions
Schedule viewing does not require an account, but NJ TRANSIT requires an account for purchasing, storing or managing tickets in the app. Sign in or create the account needed for those ticket actions, while continuing to use the schedule and live-departure tools independently.

Planning an unfamiliar journey
Use the website’s Schedules and Fares section or the app’s trip planner. Enter both stations, select the weekday or weekend context and compare the resulting itineraries. Once you have chosen a departure, use DepartureVision for the boarding station shortly before travel.
Leaving soon
Go directly to DepartureVision, select the departure station and inspect the listed trains, times and tracks. Open the train entry if you need its stops or estimated arrivals. A timetable can provide context, but the live station display is the faster answer to “What is showing now?”
Checking a return trip
Run a new schedule search with the return origin and destination, or use the app’s itinerary planning for the reverse journey. If the return is a regular part of your routine, include an approximate return time when configuring My Transit Alerts.
Following a recurring commute
Set up My Transit Alerts with the origin, destination, approximate departure and return times, selected trains and preferred notification channel. On the day of travel, use DepartureVision when you need the actual station display and track.
Privacy, notifications and practical setup choices
My Transit Alerts offers a choice of app push, text or email. Select the channel you are most likely to notice while preparing to travel. App notifications keep the information in the NJ TRANSIT app; text and email can be useful when you are not actively viewing the app.

When setting up an alert, use approximate times that represent the trip you actually take. Choosing a time far from your normal departure can make the alert less useful, especially when multiple trains operate around the same period. If your schedule changes, revisit the selected trip details rather than assuming an old alert still covers the new journey.
Key limits to keep in mind
- A scheduled itinerary and a live station display serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- DepartureVision shows track assignments when provided; the absence of a displayed track is not a reason to guess one.
- Train details are obtained by selecting the listed service, so a quick glance at the station list may not show every stop or estimated arrival detail.
- Viewing schedules is available without signing in, while ticket purchasing, storage and management require an account in the app.
- My Transit Alerts are configured around selected trips and delivery channels; they are a way to receive updates, not a replacement for checking the station display when you are about to board.

NJ TRANSIT’s MyTrain information describes DepartureVision this way: “DepartureVision enables you to view train departure screens, including arrival and departure times and track assignments on your web-enabled mobile device or desktop computer.” Its app FAQ similarly states: “You can plan trips and view schedules without signing in.” These descriptions capture the practical division: use the schedule and planner to prepare, and use the station display to check current operations.
