To check a Nintendo Switch 2 controller, open HOME Menu > Controllers. The screen shows an approximate battery level for every controller actively paired with the console and displays a charging indicator when a controller is charging. These readings are for controllers; the console’s own battery-percentage controls are separate.
This single screen is the quickest way to check Joy-Con 2, the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and other compatible wireless controllers before or during a game. It also helps distinguish a low battery from a controller that is not currently connected to a supported charging source.

Check a paired controller’s battery level
- Press the HOME button to open the HOME Menu.
- Select Controllers.
- Find the icon for each controller currently paired with the Switch 2.
- Read the approximate battery-life indicator shown beside each controller.
- Look for the charging symbol to see whether that controller is charging at that moment.
Nintendo describes the reading as approximate battery life, not an exact percentage. The official instructions say that “the approximate battery life will be displayed for each controller that is actively paired to this Nintendo Switch 2 system.” See Nintendo’s Switch 2 battery instructions for the screen layout and controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou do not need to open a separate battery application or disconnect a controller to inspect it. If several controllers are paired, check each icon individually. The screen is intended to show the status of controllers that are actively paired at that time, so a controller that is switched off, out of range, or no longer paired may not provide a current reading until it reconnects.

What the Controllers screen tells you
Approximate level, not a precise percentage
The controller icons provide a practical estimate so you can decide whether to keep playing or connect a charger. Nintendo does not document the controller display as an exact percentage. Do not apply the HOME Menu percentage setting for the console to the controller icons; that setting changes how the Switch 2’s own battery is shown, not the controller readout. Nintendo Japan also describes the controller display as an indicator rather than a precise percentage (see Nintendo Japan’s explanation).
That distinction matters if you are looking for a number such as 47% or 12%. The official controller instructions provide an approximate level rather than promising a numerical percentage. Use the indicator as a decision aid: a low-looking icon means it is sensible to charge before a long session, while a charging symbol confirms that the system recognizes an active charging connection.
Charging symbol
When a paired controller is connected to a valid power source, a charging indicator appears on the Controllers screen. If the level does not change immediately, leave the controller connected for a while and check the screen again. A controller can remain paired while charging, so you do not need to open a separate battery application.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The indicator is also a useful connection check. If you have attached a Joy-Con 2 or plugged in a Pro Controller but no charging symbol appears, check the seating, cable, power source, and the charging requirements for that controller. Do not treat the absence of an immediate level change as proof that the battery is faulty; the displayed level is approximate and may need time to update.
Several controllers at once
The screen lists each controller actively paired to that Switch 2. This lets you check both Joy-Con 2 controllers, a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, or other compatible wireless controllers in one place. A controller that is switched off, out of range, or no longer paired will not provide a current reading until it reconnects.
Checking the screen before multiplayer play can reveal that one controller has substantially less remaining charge than another. It also avoids confusing a missing controller icon with a charging failure: first make sure the controller is powered on and paired, then inspect its battery and charging status.
How to charge Joy-Con 2
Joy-Con 2 has two Nintendo-documented charging routes: attach the controllers to the Switch 2 console, or attach them to the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (model BEE-010). Nintendo estimates approximately 3½ hours for a full Joy-Con 2 charge. That is a manufacturer estimate, not an independently measured charging test; Nintendo does not state a publication year for the estimate on the support page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The two methods are alternatives rather than a claim that one is faster. Console attachment uses the Switch 2 itself as the charging connection. The Charging Grip lets the controllers charge while they are away from the console, provided the grip is connected to an approved power source. Choose based on where you want the controllers positioned and which cables or power connections are available.
Charging while attached to the Switch 2
- Slide each Joy-Con 2 fully onto the corresponding rail of the Switch 2 console.
- Connect the console to its AC adapter.
- Leave the console powered on or in Sleep Mode.
- Open HOME Menu > Controllers and confirm that the charging indicator appears for the attached Joy-Con 2.
Simply attaching Joy-Con 2 while the console is running from its internal battery is not the condition Nintendo specifies for charging. The console must be connected to the AC adapter, and it must be powered on or in Sleep Mode. Full connection and a visible charging symbol are useful checks if you are unsure whether the rails are making contact. Nintendo’s charging requirements are listed at the Joy-Con 2 charging support page.
If you intend to charge both controllers this way, make sure each one is fully seated on its corresponding rail. Then return to the Controllers screen and check both icons rather than assuming that one attached controller means the other is charging too. The AC-adapter requirement applies to console-attached charging; a battery-powered, unplugged console is not the setup Nintendo specifies for this route.

Charging with the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip
- Insert the Joy-Con 2 controllers into the Charging Grip.
- Connect the grip to the Switch 2 dock with the included USB cable, or connect it directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
- Keep the controllers seated in the grip while they charge.
- Check HOME Menu > Controllers on the paired Switch 2 for the charging icon and approximate level.
The grip is sold separately and is not included in a Switch 2 bundle. It is useful when you want to charge Joy-Con 2 away from the console or while the console is being used in another configuration. Nintendo documents the grip and its connections rather than promising a faster charge than console attachment, so choose between the two methods based on convenience and the equipment you have.
If the grip is connected to the dock, use the grip’s included USB cable. Nintendo also documents connecting the grip directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter. Seat the controllers completely, then verify the charging symbol on the paired console. A grip connection does not change the way you read battery status: the Controllers screen remains the place to see the approximate level and charging state.
Joy-Con 2 charging comparison
| Method | Controller position | Required connection | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attached to Switch 2 | Joy-Con 2 mounted on the console rails | Switch 2 connected to AC adapter; console powered on or in Sleep Mode | Charging symbol beside each attached controller |
| Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, BEE-010 | Joy-Con 2 seated in the separate grip | Grip connected by included USB cable to the dock or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter | Controllers remain seated and the Controllers screen shows charging |
How to charge the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
Use the USB charging cable supplied with the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo supports both of these connections:
| Charging route | Connection | Does the console need to be docked? |
|---|---|---|
| Dock USB | Connect the cable to the Pro Controller and an available USB port on the Switch 2 dock. | No special docking condition is stated beyond using the dock’s USB port. |
| Direct AC adapter | Connect the cable to the Pro Controller and directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter. | No. The console itself does not need to be docked. |
- Plug the USB cable into the Pro Controller.
- Connect the other end to a dock USB port or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
- Keep the controller connected while the battery replenishes.
- On the paired console, open HOME Menu > Controllers and check the battery indicator and charging symbol.
These instructions and the supported connections are in Nintendo’s Pro Controller charging guidance. The Controllers screen remains the place to check the controller’s state; the console-battery percentage options do not replace it.
The direct-AC option is useful when the console is not docked. The dock-USB option is useful when the dock is already connected and an available USB port is convenient. Nintendo documents both routes but does not state that either one charges faster, so there is no supported performance advantage to claim.

Do not confuse controller status with console battery percentage
The Switch 2 has separate controls for its own battery. To show the console’s battery percentage temporarily, press ZL and ZR together. In handheld or tabletop mode, you can also tap the battery icon at the top right of the screen. To keep the console percentage visible on the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Battery (%).
Those controls describe the Switch 2 console battery only. For Joy-Con 2, the Pro Controller, and other paired controllers, return to HOME Menu > Controllers. The controller display remains approximate, even when the console’s own percentage is enabled.
For example, enabling System Battery (%) does not convert a Joy-Con 2 icon into a numerical percentage and does not add a controller percentage to the HOME Menu. Use the console shortcuts when you need the console’s charge level; use Controllers when you need a paired controller’s level or charging state.
If Joy-Con 2 is not charging
1. Confirm the required power state
For Joy-Con 2 attached to the console, verify all three conditions: the controllers are fully seated, the Switch 2 is connected to the AC adapter, and the console is powered on or in Sleep Mode. A missing AC connection or a fully powered-off console can explain why the attached controllers do not charge.
Do not begin by changing the console’s battery-percentage setting. That setting affects the console display, not the physical charging path for Joy-Con 2. First establish the correct AC and power state, then check the controller icon.

2. Check the on-screen indicator
Open HOME Menu > Controllers. If the charging symbol is present, the console recognizes a charging connection. If it is absent, remove and reattach the Joy-Con 2, confirm the AC adapter connection, and check the screen again.
Check each Joy-Con 2 separately. One controller can be seated correctly while the other is not, so a single charging icon should not be taken as confirmation that both controllers are charging. Re-seat the controller fully and revisit the screen after the connection is restored.
3. Try the Charging Grip
If console attachment still does not work, use the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip with its included USB cable. Connect the grip to the Switch 2 dock or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter, seat the controllers, and check the Controllers screen. This alternate route can help identify whether the problem is specific to console attachment or persists with another supported charger.
The grip is an official, separately sold accessory, model BEE-010. It is not included in a Switch 2 bundle, so do not assume a new console package contains one. If you do not have the grip, continue with the console-attached method under Nintendo’s stated AC and power conditions.
4. Allow time for the estimate to update
The battery display is approximate and may not visibly change the moment a cable is connected. Leave the controller connected, then revisit the Controllers screen. Check that the cable is firmly inserted and that the grip or dock is receiving power.
A charging symbol is the immediate status check; the changing level is not an instant test result. Give the connection time, then compare the approximate indicator again. Avoid concluding that a controller is not charging solely because its displayed level looks unchanged after a very short interval.
5. Seek service for persistent faults
If the charging symbol never appears, the battery level repeatedly falls despite a valid connection, or the controller will not hold a charge, use Nintendo’s support and repair process. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance does not recommend opening the controller or attempting an unverified battery replacement. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 power troubleshooting page for the service path.

Using older Nintendo Switch controllers with Switch 2
First-generation Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller are separate from Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo lists compatible earlier controllers as usable wirelessly with Switch 2, but earlier Joy-Con cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console.
To charge original Joy-Con, use a compatible Joy-Con Charging Grip, charging stand, or a compatible original Nintendo Switch console. Do not expect the Switch 2 rails to charge first-generation Joy-Con. The compatibility details are in Nintendo’s Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 controller compatibility information.

This distinction also prevents a common diagnosis error. An original Joy-Con may appear as a compatible wireless controller but still cannot be charged by sliding it onto a Switch 2 console. Pairing compatibility and physical charging compatibility are separate questions. Use an accessory or original console that Nintendo lists for charging the earlier controller.

Will Joy-Con 2 charge while the Switch 2 is unplugged?
Nintendo’s specified console-attached setup requires the Switch 2 to be connected to the AC adapter and powered on or in Sleep Mode. If you need to charge detached Joy-Con 2, use the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip connected to the dock by its included USB cable or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
How long does Joy-Con 2 take to charge fully?
Nintendo estimates approximately 3½ hours for a full Joy-Con 2 charge. That figure is an estimate, not a guaranteed result or an independent measurement.
Does the Switch 2 need to be docked to charge the Pro Controller?
No. Nintendo supports connecting the Pro Controller’s included USB cable to an available USB port on the Switch 2 dock or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter. The console itself does not need to be docked for the direct-AC method.
Why does my controller not appear on the Controllers screen?
The screen reports controllers actively paired to that Switch 2. A controller that is switched off, out of range, or no longer paired may not show a current reading until it reconnects. Re-establish the controller connection, then return to HOME Menu > Controllers.
Can first-generation Joy-Con attach to Switch 2 for charging?
No. Nintendo lists earlier Joy-Con as usable wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console. Charge them with a compatible Joy-Con Charging Grip, charging stand, or compatible original Nintendo Switch console.

What should I do if Joy-Con 2 still will not charge?
Confirm that the controller is fully seated, the console is connected to AC power, and the console is powered on or in Sleep Mode. Check for the charging symbol, then try the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip if available. If the fault persists, use Nintendo’s support and repair process rather than opening the controller or attempting an unverified battery repair.
Bottom line for checking battery and charge status
Use HOME Menu > Controllers whenever you need the status of a paired Switch 2 controller. Treat the level as an estimate and use the charging symbol to confirm an active charge. For Joy-Con 2 attached to the console, AC power plus powered-on or Sleep Mode operation is required; the Charging Grip provides a separate supported route. The Switch 2 Pro Controller can charge through the dock or directly from the AC adapter, while the console’s percentage setting applies only to the console battery.
