To find out whether an NFL player is expected to play, check the official NFL injury report for the correct week and matchup, then read the player’s game-status designation—not just the practice notes. For the closest thing to a final game-day answer, check the team’s inactive announcement near kickoff; NFL Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff.
Where to find the official NFL injury report
Open the NFL injury report and select the relevant week, team, or matchup. Confirm both the player’s team and the game: the page organizes players by team and matchup and includes injury, practice-status, and game-status fields, along with game dates and kickoff times. The page is live, so check it again on game day rather than relying on an old screenshot or search result.

How to read practice participation and game status
Practice participation and game status answer different questions. Practice labels describe what a player did in practice; the game-status designation communicates the club’s reported expectation for the game. The NFL’s injury-report policy explanation identifies these practice categories:
- Did Not Participate: The player did not take part in practice.
- Limited Participation: The player took part on a limited basis.
- Full Participation: The player took part fully.
None of those practice labels, on its own, confirms whether the player will be active in the game. A full practice is not proof the player will play, just as a missed practice is not itself the game-status designation.
What Questionable, Doubtful, and Out mean
The NFL’s policy explanation defines the game-status terms this way:
- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play. Do not translate this label into “probably out.” The policy says that if there is a question about availability, the player should be listed as Questionable.
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
A player expected with certainty to play may not have a game-status designation, even if the player appeared on a practice report earlier in the week. The NFL’s explanation says that such a player will no longer be listed in the Game Status Report. Therefore, a blank game-status field is not, by itself, confirmation that the player is active.

When injury reports and inactive announcements appear
Report deadlines depend on the scheduled game day. The NFL’s 2026–27 important-dates calendar says reports are generally due by 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. For Sunday games, it lists practice reports Wednesday through Friday and the Game Status Report on Friday. Other game days follow different schedules, so consult the calendar’s row for the particular game rather than assuming the Sunday schedule applies.
Teams must report a change in a player’s condition after the Game Status Report is filed. Because a status can change, revisit the official report and team updates on game day.
For the final pregame check, look for the team’s inactive announcement close to kickoff. NFL Support gives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff as the typical time for teams to designate inactives. That timing is approximate; use the actual team announcement to confirm who is inactive.

A quick game-day check
- Open the official NFL injury report and choose the correct week, team, or matchup.
- Read the practice-status and game-status fields separately.
- Interpret any designation literally: Questionable means uncertain, Doubtful means unlikely, and Out means the player will not play.
- Recheck the report and team updates on game day, since teams report changes in condition.
- Near kickoff, check the team’s inactive announcement for the final availability check.
