To confirm whether an NFL player is available for a specific game, check the matchup’s official inactive report on NFL.com’s Inactives hub, then verify the team and player against the club’s latest game-day announcement when available. Teams exchange inactive lists at the 90-minute pregame meeting, so check again close to kickoff if the status is important.
How to check a player’s game-day status
- Identify the exact game. Note the teams, date and kickoff time so you do not rely on a report from another matchup or week.
- Open the league’s inactive listings. Visit the NFL Inactives hub, or find NFL.com’s inactive-report article for that matchup. Check the correct club heading and look for the player’s name. The hub may prompt you to check back if reports are not yet available.
- Cross-check the club’s latest game-day announcement. If the team has posted a current update for that game, compare it with the league listing. Pay attention to the update time if a late development is reported.
- Recheck near kickoff when timing matters. The inactive list is exchanged at the scheduled pregame reporting point; a weekly injury designation is not a substitute for that game-day list.
When NFL teams announce inactives
NFL Football Operations says clubs exchange Game Day Administration Reports, including each team’s inactive list, at the officials’ meeting 90 minutes before kickoff. That is the key scheduled reporting point. Check the official game-specific listing during that window, and recheck closer to kickoff if late developments could affect your decision.

What injury designations do—and do not—tell you
The NFL’s injury-report policy defines the game-status terms as follows:
- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play.
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
These designations belong to the injury report; the inactive list is the club’s game-day list. A player listed as Questionable is not thereby confirmed active or inactive. The NFL Competition Committee’s policy explanation says: “If there is any question concerning a player’s availability for the game, he should be listed as ‘Questionable.’”

How to interpret the inactive list
If the player is listed as inactive
Treat the player as unavailable for ordinary participation in that game. There is a narrow exception for a player designated as the emergency third quarterback: the NFL’s rule allows that player to enter only under specified conditions. It does not make ordinary inactive players eligible to participate.
If the player is not listed
Absence from the inactive list is useful for checking game-day availability, but it does not establish the player’s role, expected snaps, workload or performance. Do not turn an availability check into a playing-time prediction.

Which source should you trust?
Use the source that is authoritative, specific to the exact game and most recently updated. NFL.com’s central Inactives hub and matchup-specific reports provide the league listing; a current club game-day post can help confirm a team update. If one page has not yet published the relevant report, look for the game-specific article or team announcement rather than treating an earlier injury designation as the final list.
